Where can I find a stock image to recover my SNS to? All I can find are custom ROMs, but I like the stock image and want to keep it. Can I just unlock the bootloader and then root, or does unlocking the bootloader delete the image (I thought it only deleted data) and that's why I need to flash a new ROM? Is there a way to root without unlocking the bootloader? I've spent the last month reading countless guides on countless websites (here, lifehacker, androidforums, dottech, etc), but I'm soOo confused because every guide is different! Speaking of which, I need help finding the "n00biest" guide on how to unlock/root my SNS. Every guide either lacks details for a n00b like me or has multiple comments from people saying it didn't work. I also read that custom ROMs don't receive updates from Google; is this true? The ONLY reason I want to root is to use apps requiring root (Titanium Backup, AdAway, etc). I've already installed JDK, SDK, and USB drivers. HALP! Background info: I rooted my last phone, a Galaxy S (Captivate), with SuperOneClick, and it didn't change the image, so all this is new to me.

Does anyone have the time and patience to answer all my questions? The link to the stock images in the reply to my thread has UNrooted images, and the root guide has an ICS image.........

Hi,
First off, I have NO CLUE what I'm doing. I'm simply following online directions.
I rooted my ZTE998 using motochopper. I also installed SDK Manager. Problem is when I open SuperSU it says, "There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it.This is a problem!" What does this mean? Have I messed it up???
I am trying to root it so I can install a Brazilian version of android, in Brazilian Portuguese, being that this phone is going to Brazil & also needs to be unlocked. Can someone help me?
PLEEEEAAASSSEEE help me! I'm so afraid I messed it up!! :crying::crying::crying:

I want to root with towel.apk but it will not work. I will have to change the MODLINKS (phone does not support message).

Android Version: 4.4.4 KitCat;

What SuperUser.apk version do I use? Will it work?
I am also wondering if this will set the KNOX flag which voids the warranty.
Thanks for the help
Su only gives you rights for a device that has root already, it won't root for you unfortunately.
I rooted my phone a few months ago and everything was fine. But recently I was prompted to install to 5.0 Lollipop update. I tried and it failed. After some googling I thought it was the fact that I'm rooted. So I unrooted it and now no matter what I do with ODIN it fails.
I've tried:
Changing my kernel. I tried two different kernels, both failed.
Installing Lollipop through 3 different methods. They all failed. (OTA update, through ODIN, recovery mode with the update on my SD card)
Basically ODIN always fails, and any other one-click root method fails as well. (Towelroot, Kingo App, MobileGo Wondershare)
Backstory: The only thing I can think of causing this much trouble is the fact that when I rooted my phone I had to use an old kernel. Everything was failing so I had to roll back my kernel in order to root. I did that. And then my WiFi stopped working. So I changed my kernel back to the original one. I don't know if this would do anything but figured it was worth mentioning.
The goal is to get the 5.0 update installed on my phone. I will settle for just re rooting my phone though.
