[Q] What triggers car mode on the Motorola Vehicle Navigation Dock? - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So the Motorola Vehicle Navigation Dock for the Droid Razr Maxx HD claims that it automatically triggers car mode in the phone when it is connected.
I've read that it has something to do with the micro-usb on the dock, but there must be something different about this micro-USB.
Can someone please explain what automatically triggers car mode on the dock? Did they bridge a resistor between pins 4 & 5 of the micro-USB?
Thanks!

You can have it set up to triger with a smart action.
You can get a programmable tag or use bluetooth as a trigger.

I won't try to disassemble my car dock to check but I guess it is the micro-usb car dock yes...
Now how to check it... good question, is there a chip in the dock, or is it just a resistor or an inverted wiring...

I believe it has something to do with the micro-usb (and maybe a chip).
Can you explain this Smart Action to me? How would I go about getting it to trigger car mode on my phone by connecting to a car dock?

i know with the original droid, it was a magnet in the dock that tripped a sensor in the phone...

Yes, for some of the older droids, a magnet did trigger car mode. However, I don't believe this is the case for newer droids.
If anyone has any idea, please let me know. Thank you.

Use the Eris on my iHome

So i read a while back somewhere that some guy somehow got his Droid to work with his iPod dock could someone post a link please thanks
1. you have an android phone, you should know who "google" is and what they do
2. what I THINK you are referring to is that people will just set they're droid into an ihome dock of some sort, and the multimedia screen with come up
the motorola droid has magnetic sensors in the back. when a northern magnetic pull happens on it, it goes into the multimedia dock home. when it's southern, it goes into the navigation dock home (or visa versa, can't remember)
most of the ihome's these days use magnets in the dock to help keep the ipod or whatever you plug into it stable. the magnet apparently triggers the multimedia home, which is actually quite neat and handy.
3. if that isn't what you're talking about, your probably asking if there is a way to hook an android phone up to an ihome dock. well, most ihome docks actually have aux ports, or just a built in wire that will plug into any standard headphone jack. if it doesn't, there's really only a few ways to mod an ihome like that to play from a headphone jack, all which would require soldering skills and for you to actually open up the ihome.

[Q] Audio out through micro USB

I had asked a question similar to this a while back in the accessories section specifically if anyone knew how to hardware trigger the car dock mode and enable the audio out through the usb port. I hadn't gotten an answer and I can't find it anywhere else. I figured I'd ask in general since it's not a feature unique to the car dock (I'm pretty sure another Atrix 2 or Atrix 4G dock can do it as well) and I was curious if it could simply be a software trigger to enable the audio out without needing the dock (obviously you'd still need a spliced cable to allow the usb to split into the audio + charging).
So, has anyone figured out a diy method of getting audio through the usb? I think I'm going to cave and just buy a car dock (AT&T has them for $30 now from the website), but I wanted to check one last time because I prefer being able to do it myself . I assumed it was something that was triggered on the ID pin and then the data pins became left and right audio, but it may be something less passive than that.
since usb is data there is no real audio out. This car dock would have to have a DAC (digital to analog converter) in it. essentially the sound is sent in digital form to it and then it is decoded to analog to be played by the dock, not the phone. in other words you cannot just enable audio out because it does not exist

Yeah, you are right. I picked one up today and took a look inside and indeed there is definitely some active components in there. My previous phone was a Captivate, so I was used to just changing a resistor value to switch different dock modes and also have the option to have the audio L/R on pins 2 & 3. I was also hopeful since I thought the DAC would need power to work and the A2 car dock works even when not plugged into the charger.
Alas, the diy dock was not meant to be (although, I think I will still need to make my own modifications, of course ).

car dock question

does anyone know if the car dock has a port to plug in a charger? im assuming it does but went on motorolas site and dont see anything saying it does. i want the car dock but only if im able to plug it in and allow it to charger while driving.

It has a 2-usb port plug for your cig lighter slot, and a specialized (meaning don't use it with anything other than the dock) usb cable that plugs into one of those slots and into the dock, and it also has a female 3.5 audio jack to run an audio cable to an input in your car stereo.
Just to confirm with real-world experience, yes it is. I use mine all the time.
I have a Smart Action setup to turn on Bluetooth, GPS and data connection (if turned off) when I dock my phone. My phone charges the entire time, syncs up with the radio in my car via Bluetooth and starts playing music automatically.
does it work well in portrait orientation? my sunglasses are polarized the same as when the q is in landscape orientation.
It works great either way.
Assuming you normally keep the brightness down to save on battery, you can also conveniently bump up the brightness to 100% when docked via the SmartActions. Its actually the only SmartAction I even have setup (I use an app to manage battery because the ability of the SmartActions for that purpose frankly isn't robust enough).

Yes, and as an added bonus it will force Landscape if your phone is locked in Portrait mode.
I personally turn off auto-rotation when I'm just using the phone, but for the dock I only want Landscape. So, all good here.

[Q] Dock for Car

Hey guys,
i need some help / ideas for the best solution for my "docking"-problem in my car.
I have a bmw and since there are no snap-in adapters for htc i have to go over audiojack for listening music with spotify and i can't just put it to the place where the audiojack is because i have to control music with the touchscreen (iDrive 1 so no bt-audioplayback/control...).
Now i got 2 problems:
1. the cable looks ugly when its plugged in the phone and
2. i have no idea where to place my holder because every place i put the ugly holder the car looks cheapy.
So, my idea is to go over the pogo-pins!
Yeah pogo-pins but i don't know the assignment of the pins so the solution would be the cr s650 dock.
BUT! i think i my car won't be able to provide enough power through usb (is it possible to power the dock with usb?!).
The plan was to place the dock (please see the attachment) in the red circle and put the cable under the cover to the usb charger and the audiojack.
And also i have to modify the dock so i can plug in a jack into the dock or just solder a cable or whatever...
So my questions are, do you think this will work? And what problems i will have implementing this? Any other better ideas maybe?
Thanks for help and sorry for my bad english i think
No ideas?

I have no idea about the pogo pin dock, but I would avoid making any permanent modifications to a BMW and deal with the ugly look...it will decrease the resale value...you could always take the dock down when not in use (which is what I do)
Regarding the pogo dock, Make sure that the phone stays still and will not fall off the dock with some hard driving.
Not the prettiest solution, but I use this: http://www.amazon.com/Mountek-nGroo...1131802&sr=8-1&keywords=cd+player+phone+mount
and just hard wired a power cable behind the dash (as to not have wires all over coming from my cig lighter)
The reason I went for that dock is because the phone is a lot closer and more accessible vs mounted to the windshield or elsewhere...also, regarding your proposed placement: having it down by the gear shift while driving would be pretty disorienting to me using GPS

Is there an official Samsung Car Dock for the Note 4?

Is there an official Car Dock for the Galaxy Note 4 that will automatically put it into a Vehicle mode when you slide it in? I'm coming from a DROID RAZR MAXX, which has a Vehicle Dock made by the manufacturer, and when you insert it into the dock, it loads Vehicle Mode.
Edit: I saw one on Samsung's website, but I'm not too happy with it. Reason being, is, with my DROID RAZR MAXX, charging and audio streaming port is built right into it. It looks like with Samsung's universal dock, that you have to plug in a separate cable, and this is for charging, only. I'm looking for a charging+audio solution, something that is built into the actual dock, much like my DROID RAZR MAXX's Vehicle dock is.
Something's funny with the audio out via USB. I don't think anyone's been able to get it to work properly. I only have a usb audio/charger cable, which should work the same way - but there's no option under the audio settings to route the audio through the cable, and routing apps on the play store don't work either...
It's probably a software update from Samsung away, but it's an odd one to leave out imho.
