Bricked OFW nexus S - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all, android noob here
I'm an iphone user for years and quite unfamiliar with rooting, android cfws and bootloaders so please bear with me.
Last year i went to serve the army and i was borrowed a nexus S from a friend that wasn't using it.
I think it had the latest version of jelly bean installed 4.x.x and was never modded/rooted/no cfw installed.
The power button wasn't working so i was removing/re-inserting the battery to open it every time.
One day It froze, one of the numerous times it did actually, so i removed the battery to reinsert it but when i did and felt the vibrating sound
i had it upside down and battery fell off while it was booting.
The phone became completely unresponsive (power button doesn't work).. when i plug it to ac screen will start flashing randomly but it won't turn on/boot. It will heat up after some time though. Same through usb data cable. I remember it was once recognized by my windows 7 (?) laptop but as an unknown device and i couldn't do anything on it.
I really really REALLY need those photos in there Is there anything i can do now?
From reading these forums and correct me if i'm wrong i'm thinking doing some of the following:
a) jig / j-tag? but will i be able to save my photos this way or everythings gonna get wiped?
b) take it to a forensics company so that maybe somehow they can exctract data from the NAND inside?
c) remove (!) the nand buy a cheap used working nexus s remove that one's too and switch? lol?
Please help!

Hello.. You will definitely lose your photos if the bootloader is locked... Coz unlocking the bootloader erases your phone completely... I am really sad for your photos...

Thank you for the reply! Will a jig work for me? Is it worth it to purchase one? Or you have to have your bl unlocked?
Also if everything else fails i will desolder the surface mount nand SD chip buy a used i9023 nexus and solder it on that one. Since that whole process is a bit expensive though I want to be sure there is no other way to revive the phone AND keep the photos.
Also has anyone on here has the knowledge to tell me what odds approx do i have of succeding doing so? I dont want the phone just my pics.

and what if the nand is corrupt ? Who knows... If u have an smd station and u can afford another motherboard then go for it. Or u can desolder the nand and send it to a company to recover the photos ? :/
ps. i don't understand why u wer removing and reinserting the battery if the power button doesn't work ?

What kind of ROM wm6 for the hurricane are you flashed? If it not containts IPL & SPL for hurricane it is not over now.
Try to downgrade to the original firmware for you platform (TORNADO)
Charge battarey (if phone dont want charge, do it externaly) and enter bootloader by pressing camera button & connect USB
thanks for your respons,
which rom it was i dont really know exactly, what i do know was that it go far to quickley
i can not turn the phone on and even with an external charger it wont work.. i already tryed to access the bootloader but it wont work..
a few minutes after i bricked it i had a white screen.. but that was just for one time..

Try to charge battarey with external charger (not in phone). Or with orriginal charger, connect it and leave at 6-12 hours.
And when you try to turn on phone ith it have red blinking for a second?
May be that you reflash incorrect botloader (IPL & SPL). I know method how to repair it, but ferst of all check that your battarey ith full charge...
yes exactly, when i have the baterry in the device and i want to turn it on, i flashes verry weak for a moment..
and when i remove the battery and put it into my original charger, it flashes strong for a second when i put the connector in.
so i am correct, that means my battery is empty and i have to find a way to charge it external..
i already have an offer for an another phone, do you think i can repair this one?
and which method do i have to use?
thanks in advance
edit:
with some wires and an another adapter i figered a way out to charge the baterry external..
it would be great if you could help me.

Chek the voltage of baterry ( it must be near 3.7-4.3 v). The easy external charge you can make taking the charger with same V & Am parameters, choping connector and take the choped wires to baterry in right dirrection "+" to "+" & "-" to "-", but this is dangerous way soo if you dont uderstand how to doo this, dont doo it.
But it seems, as when you try to connect orriginal charger there are only blincking for a second and nothing else, that you destroy the bootloader on your phone...
And is this blincking red or orange flash ?
no i realy know what i am doing and i let it charge for a couple of hours but there is no result..
it still doesn't do anything and i know the battery is full now.
when i want to turn it on, it flashes red, so if the bootloader is destroyed that means that he not can be repaired is it?
well.. i already thougd that it was over but now i now it for sure..
thanks for youre help

I can repair it ( I repaired many devices with same problem), but i am from ukraine, soo i dont know is it possible to send it to me for repeairing, or i can buy it from you for experements in repairing...
i live in holland so that is a bit to far for driving indeed
well, ofcourse i can sent it to you but what does that costs? transport, repairing etc..
or you may buy mines for experimenting and than i buy an another one..
how much would you give for my 8300?
is repairing so difficult that i cant do it my own? or do i need special tools or something?

I dont know about shipping cost from you country(you must find out on your post services), for repairing i ask near 20 EUR. And ofcourse shipping by your costs in both sides.
If you want to sell it for me i can give you near 30-35 EUR (it is dependent from accesories and outward appearance). And I pay shipping costs.
Yes for repairing you need special tools (special cable etc.) and wide experience...
oke then i want to sell it to you that makes it a lot easyer, because special tools and experience is not really what i got
i am going to buy a 8310 so i want to keep some accesiores like car holder and stuff.. i can offer you the phone and battery and charger..
so that will be 35 + shipping costs? i will look that up, i dont think that is verry much..
i will sent you a message with my bank acount number and then i would like to know youre adress so i can sent it to you..

Fully bricked Captivate? Please, help! Tried many things..

Hi everyone,
Here's my problem :
Since some few days, my Captivate won't start up, and won't connect anymore.
The screen stays black!
I tried usually things : removing battery, sim, microsd, then pressing vol up, down and power, connecting with ODIN3.. Nothing happends.
It was bricked after a custom ROM update. I did format data, cache and .. system ! As usually, because I tought formatting system was necessary. Maybe it was the wrong thing that made it crashes..
So, I thank you a lot for bringing me any help !!

could you give pls a little detail. as to what custom rom did you flashed, is it the froyo rom or ginger rom? and elaborate further on what did you do when this happens it might give other people here some more understanding on how to help you. If your your phone won't power at all and the soft bottons won't light up and won't respond with key combos or even a jig you likely had a perma brick as in hard brick.!!......If you are still on warranty no worries just tell them that your phone suddenly dies and that you have no clue what happens to it.
You can also try this if you like read the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1020976&page=3
Thanks for your answer!
I flash many of my phones, so, unfortunately, I can't remember what kind of ROM it was! I also try many of those I can find on XDA.
Here's what happens :
Had formatted data, cache, and system. Then, flashed the ROM, and selected "reboot". Just after that, I was making coffee.. So, I came back 5 min after, and the phone was .. dead!
After many, many, many Captivate's ROM flashes (maybe 70 !?), first time it happends!
The phone is no more under warranty, so I can't do anything..
Btw, what is a "jig" ? Heard alot that word but..
And thanks for the thread, but I don't think there's a solution in it!?
I will browse it tomorrow, thanks
Thanks again for help!

Here ya go....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rdn5GoRjhn0
The jig is usually the last resort for some. That is if holding volume up and volume down then plugging in the usb cable into your phone ( the other end being already plugged into your computer) does not put it into download mode.

U can either buy a jig from someone like mobiletechvideos on YouTube or make one urself using resistors (tutorials are scattered around the forum). U plug it into ur micro USB slot and it will put ur phone onto download mode. This works if ur phone is soft bricked and it may not work for u but definitely worth a try
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
Sounds like you flashed a single bootloader and hard bricked your phone. Either jtag it or buy a new one...
JIG2WIN4LIFE if you can still turn on your phone without a perma black screen anyways
Hi,
I took a look over "JIG" on eBay, and found it for approx. 8 $.
But it says it can be used for ALL cases, at the exception if the screen stays black ! And that's my case..
So, do I have to buy it anyway, or is it really dead?
I don't want to buy another one!
Thank you.
sometimes the jig works, if you take out battery, DO NOT TOUCH ANY BUTTONS, put in jig. worked for me.
BUT your phone is under 1 year old. it has a warranty. if it happens to get broken in a way that they cant tell, and can never read the phone again... you get a [email protected]!!!
think speaker magnet or
2 seconds in the microwave 1 or 2 times MAX.. dont want phisical dammage! and there is plenty of electronic parts to get messed up very easy this way

Wow, nuking it will cover your tracks if they try to access anything on it?
if it is electrically damaged and wont work, they cant access it, and they cant see your tracks...
and my buddy nuked a phone before, to destroy it for fun, there were sparks immediatly. if that happens the phone aint going to work anymore. so do it in very short bursts. you do not want any physical damage.
or wave it in-front of a LARGE magnet to degause it until it doesnt boot anymore.
Hi,
Thanks for your reply, but my phone is no more under warranty..
There was no warranty when I bought it from USA (on eBay), and I'm living in Belgium! So, no way
I will have to try the JIG then.. I suppose it's my last chance
yup jig is your last chance..
now the other day i bricked and the jig wouldnt work either unitl I found a trick that helped my jig work. this worked FOR ME in my situation. not all.
remove battery count to 5 and replace battery
DO NOT TOUCH ANY BUTTONS
put in jig. download mode!!!!
if i touched ANY button the jig would not work. worth a shot.
jigs are about 8$ on ebay or can be made with a few resistors for a couple dollars. (or whatever currency you have in Belgium). there are many threads on how to make them in the captivate forums on xda here. just make sure not to touch the resistors with your fingers if you make one. use tape to hold it.!! good luck buddy!
Thanks a lot!
I will buy a JIG on eBay then.. It would be safer!
We are using Euro currency in Belgium . So, a JIG is approximately 6 €.
It's a cheap price for this kind of tool! But by the way, HTC has much more solutions to unbrick their devices..

Suggestions to my dead i9023...

What can I do? I saw in some places some suggestions, like this:
1- Take battery and chip out.
2- Hold power button for ten seconds ("to remove any energy power")
3- Put battery and chip back
4- Plug at the charger
5- If Google Logo is on the screen, sucess, if not...
---
Some guys said that I should use JTAG/JIT
I saw in someplace that theses box are expensive, I do not have them...
---
Soo if someone here know something to help... Tell me!
Oh, my phone is dead because I take the battery out when the phone was starting.
Samsung should send me a Galaxy Nexus, this would be perfect. And the phone is a little bit old, so, samsung "can't" do nothing.
Edit: I was running 4.2 from forum.
Pulling battery while at Google logo instantly burns your motherboard, so your phone is absolutely dead. If you still have your warranty, Samsung will repair it! Same happened to me

You make it sound like any battery pull during that time will kill a Nexus. I've pulled my battery countless times, during the whole boot process from Google first logo to boot animation end and my Nexus still works fine. It doesn't absolutely instantly burn the motherboard, lol...
But anyway, if it's physical damage, adam outler ressurector won't do anything. That's only good for warranty.
Yup, I'll try to see if Samsung "can" help me...

[Q] Nexus S bricked. Now what?

Hi,
I wanted to update my Nexus S from SlimBean 4.2.1 1.0 to 1.1 this morning.
I didn't do a full wipe which basically ruined my OS so I wanted to back it all up, full wipe and start all over again.
I had big problems with backing up as Titanium Backup either crashed or was stuck at it's initializing SQLite stage.
The phone process and System UI were crashing all the time if that matters.
So I tried to back it up through CWM which first failed while backing up the data partition, but it worked the second time.
I turned the phone off and since then it's not doing anything anymore.
Won't turn on, doesn't show the charging animation when plugging it in.
I tried to recover it several times.
It doesn't show up in Windows' Device Manager and UnBrickableRessurrectorR40 doesn't see it.
Is there anything I can do?
Thanks a lot.

why don't you try to get it to download mode and flash via odin ?
I would do it that way if it was possible. The Nexus won't do anything. Neither fastboot, nor Download nor recovery nor anything else.
The only thing it does is getting hot when being connected to AC.
But I'll try to do the UnbrickableMod and see if it helps.

Did you make the hardware modification? I have to do it with mine to be recognized.

hardware modification is so difficult so as to be impossible for most people. it seems to be the only solution though. i only just bought my nexus s (for $150) second hand .. flashed cwm 10 on it and it bricked a few days later when i swapped a battery. i have disassembled the phone but the modification required needs minute tools and expertise beyond my ability. any suggestions? sending it in to experts in the USA will cost me nearly $100 and I'm afraid the diagnosis might mean I will lose that as well.
Without the hardware modification you can trash your Nexus S right now, as the chance that you recover it for some reason is probably 0.01%.
For doing the hardware modification you really need to know what you're doing. If you don't, look out for someone you know and who would do it for you.
After you did the UnbrickableMod, the chance that you can recover your phone is about 60% (maybe).
If you can't recover the phone, you need to exchange the eMMC chip as well.
I found eMMC chips in China for $19, but you still need to assemble it.
This is where I'm stuck at the moment.
my phone is in same condition please someone solve this and share with us
If you haven't already applied the UnBrickableMod you should try that first.
If you have, I have no idea what to do.

[Q] Motherboard swap

Hi
Last week I had the problem with my Nexus 5 constantly rebooting on the "Google" logo.
I tried to find a way repairing the phone as I need the data I have on it. But I bought the phone on the Play Store and the LG warranty has ended because I had this phone since it came out.
So, I called Google and now a refurbished Nexus 5 is on it's way, and I have to send them back my phone that doesn't works. Now I need your help please, I want to know how can I recover the data on my older phone (I need to perform a nandroid, but the phone would last only 1 second inside the bootloader).
I thought swapping motherboards could work, but there's many things:
1- Am I going to have any problems with the IMEI ?
2- Does a Nexus 5 without it's adhesive in the inside at the bottom means "warranty void" to them ?
3- It is better to swap motherboards and make a nandroid then putting back my motherboard on the broken phone or just swapping motherboards and keeping my motherboard in the new phone ?
Thank you for helping me. Don't hesitate to answer me more information if you need or if my english is too bad.
As soon as you open the phone warranty is void. You most likely have a stuck power button on the problem phone. Try mashing the crap out of it for a minute or two. If you can get it unstuck your problem is solved.
Thanks for answering
I already tried to hit the power button for a long time, then hard enough to try unstucking it. I even broke the thin piece of plastic below the sim tray. But I did this before I realized the phone wouldn't try to start at all if it wasn't connected to the AC adapter. Then I saw a post from someone on reddit having the exact same issue, who replaced a defective part (he called this an integrated circuit) and has his phone working now.

Thank you for helping me. Don't hesitate to answer me more information if you need or if my english is too bad.

I know this thread is a little aged, however I am starting to have similar issues and I also had the Nexus 5 since launch. How did you get a replacement out of warranty?
