Hello everyone,
I am running CM10 stable build on my Skyrocket and I'm looking for the best kernel for extended battery life. Could you suggest any?
I took a look at the faux123 kernel but thats only for ROMs built on Gingerbread.
Thanks in advance,
Wozzi7

Try kernels for cm10 for yourself and find out. Best threads are frond upon

As jd said try some different kernels. Although recognize that great battery life can be achieved on stock kernel. Your settings are more important than the kernel you use.

I apologize for starting a 'best thread'.
My understanding of kernels is that they are hardware specific, meaning they are meant for specific devices... right?
Or are they software specific i.e. only works for cm10, paranoid android, etc.?

Hardware. Only flash what's specific for your device or you will brick. Also specific to the Rom type. Ie, cm 10, touch wiz, etc.

Hardware specific ie Skyrocket only and software specific. Software wise they are broken down into 2 categories: Samsung touch wiz only or aosp only. Sounds like you need to do a bit of reading. Take the time to read about kernels before flashing, as flashing the wrong one will brick your device.
Edit: jd beat me to the submit button.

Good for you for asking. I know in hindsight I got damn lucky the first few times I flashed a kernel

+1. People may chirp you sometimes, but u should still ask questions if things are unclear after reading.

the dev section has turned in to a nightmare ... 4 threads on the Jelly bean ... i think they are all all the same thing lol
while i am grateful for the work the devs put into the roms, it does seem a bit unnecessary for multiple threads with what appears to be the same rom.
This needs to be in Q&A. LMAO.

although I agree since this is a question, it would almost be hypocritical because then there would be 3 JB question threads for the cappy
Its getting all too disorganized. And they still have too many bugs imo

Someone should close the two new JB thread and let the old one open. Because right now there are 3 same JB ports from the same original thread (By Derteufel).

So far the one that's being updated the quickest is the one by monfro so we should keep that one I guess and its more convenient because you don't have to flash the kernel for that one

for me wifi was working perfectly, i just moved back to remics 1.3.1, but try a reflash dont forget to data wipe and format system, and you have to flash everything in proper order, i was using sliceruks v4 port so for that you have to flash rom, kernel, addons, superuser, and then fix the permissions in recovery

I'm sure some sort of order will emerge from the chaos ... just give it time
Good news is, the two porter, sliceruk and monfro is now both working with one thread. The best team up so far, so well be updated to CM10 Alpha releases. :victory:
This problem only makes it harder for people who are looking for a good JB rom to find one. I really don't want to try them all, just give us the best one and stop posting the same thing over and over again.
as many as needs to be! info is appreciated. im just outside the noob phase and i can tell you the feedback is VERY helpful.
Didnt want to post this up in the Developer section, because I am not a developer...but here you go...

It means we'll be able to have kernels built specifically for our device.

Exactly what he said!^^^…it means no more trying to force fixes into kernels...possibly fix screen flickers in AOSP Roms without checking disable hw overlays on every reboot... Being able to make oc/uc settings stick better and possibly get more of the S3s stock features ported into AOSP Roms... In general it means greater possibilities for all future S3 development!
I was wondering why there were so few kernels.
I'm pretty new to all this. Can we use this to compile and install?

I'm pretty sure the android developers here would make more use of this than you and I.
OK don't flame me for being a noon about this but would it be possible to port gingerbread to the one s? Maybe like cm7.1? I know this sounds really dumb and alot of people are probably going to be like "why would you want gingerbread? Its old and outdated" but some of the best custom ROMs I've ran were based on GB and i would like to attempt porting them but have no GB base, so my real question is does anybody think its possible?

Possible? Of course it is, its open source.
Will anyone in their right mind do it? Very much doubt it.

I agree, but I think I'm going to attempt it. I've never built android from source let alone cm so It will take some time. Thank you for your input

Sorry, that question can't be answered. One thing I've learned from my time here is that all phones are NOT the same, what works on my S3 may or may not work on yours.
You'll have to make your own tests, get started flashing various ROMs and good luck!

You have to understand that all of those ROMs have some problems since they are fairly new. All are still in the early stages of development.

I dont know if you are new or not so please dont think I mean to preach. But, when I am deciding what rom to use I read pages upon pages of the thread for that rom. I believe this is important so not only can I see what rom works like I want but, also prepares me for what to expect after flashing. Simply taking someones advice on which rom to flash will not always end with the best result.
That being said I am loving masta's cm10.1 unofficial.

I couldn't agree more.
Asking people for advice is probably bad because many stick with the first one they find work well.
Or they use what someone else says works best.
Roms work differently on everyone's phone so you must try for yourself.
Also people become very bias when they find a ROM they like.
Haha so it may not be the best for your needs.
Good luck and get flashing

I recently installed PSX v2 and PSK and the ROM + kernel is great.
Sadly, the creators of the ROM is disabandoning development of the ROM on XDA.
So when Android updates to 4.4.1, I highly doubt I can continue using PSX if I update.
Which is why I am asking for any good recommendation of ROM and kernel combinations to replace PSX (unless they return).
I am looking for a ROM + kernel that is not bloated, not feature heavy, and fast with good battery.
I can customize the phone to my liking after installation with Xposed framework.
pls leave me your opinion for good ROMs and kernels. =]

Good / Best. ROM / Kernel / Combination. It's all the same. The advice from the thread is try them yourself.
