[Q] Temporarily bricked after trying to boot into CWM

I just got my TF700 the other day. I was able to downgrade to .30, root, and unlock the bootloader without incident. I just pushed CWM per this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31556045&postcount=1. I tried booting into CWM, got the standard quick vibration but the tablet was dead after that. I messed around for a while and finally after holding the power button several times in a row, it booted as normal. Battery is at 80%
Before I go any further, what just happened? Can I push CWM again the same way to re-install it? How should I proceed?
FWIW, the checksum for download 1 on the page mentioned only matched the checksum for #2. I used #2 because it matched its MD5 as it was listed on the page.

The proper way to do this is to upgrade to the latest stock JB (10.4.4.25), unlock, and you can either fastboot the recovery or unlock it be flashing Superuser. It is not advised to downgrade,even if it seems easier, because if you do it the way I stated, everything will be latest and should not have any problems whatsoever. since you downgraded to ICS, you now have a ICS bootloader. an ICS bootloader will not boot JB, nor vice versa. so now you will need to flash a JB bootloader, which will not boot the stock ICS, so you will now need Cromi, Cyanogen,or another custom rom to get it update with JB. Make sure you have them preinstalled on a SDcard before doing any more flashing.
If I am wrong, hopefully someone will correct me.

The writeups I had seen prior unlocking said to downgrade to .30...so I did. I am still sitting on .30 and am planning on installing CM 10.1 which I have on both the TF700 internal and an external SD card. The only problem is what I mentioned above where my device wouldn't boot into CWM and subsequently locked up for about 15 min. Should I upgrade to JB .25 prior to booting into CWM and installing CM 10.1?

I CM10.1 requires the JB bootloader, If you install CM on the ICS it wont boot. I dont see why the recovery is the problem. I would try updating to JB bootloader, use the zips in Cromi's second post, and then try installing Cromi. Downgrading is only recommended if you want to stay on a locked bootloader. Otherwise, you should flash the root.then install recovery, or simply fastboot it.
In order to install CM you will need to update the bootloader, then once it is updated you will not be able to boot into the ICS rom, so you will have to already have CM10.1, also dont forget google apps, so it can be flash afterwards.
IF CM is installed with the ICS boot loader it will just not boot, it will go into recovery but that is it. I dont see any probability in bricking your device. But I am only a newb, so you may wanna wait for another's input.

Or you could install the 10.4.4.25 stock, then just fastboot a recovery. I mistakenly said root with zip, you cant without custom recovery so scratch that, the only way to install custom recovery via the method I gave is fastboot. Or the way you did so, but that requires more steps and upgrades. Also greater chance of bricking. This is because of the incompatibility of the rom, boot loader, and recovery. If you have latest recovery,I would install the bootloader, then flash CM10.1 + Gapps and should be good to go.

Got it working. Yes, it appears CWM is bootloader specific. I flashed the JB bootloader and was able to get into cwm and install CM10.1 I am not up and running. Thanks!

Just remember for future reference, keep things up to date,or at least compatible with one another or you will run into trouble later.The #1 reason for tf700's bricking software wise is people do not update their bootloader as they update their recovery. Just keep things recent and you should have not a problem.

[Q] what is "clean install"?

Hi everybody,
I am wondering what is a "clean install" of CROMI and how do you perform it?
I read some threads but never completely understood this issue.

If I am not mistaken a clean install is an install as if you'd install the rom for the very first time ie. wiping data, cache & dalvik before flashing.
Be aware that:
a) you don't need to do this unless you're experiencing serious issues
b) you'll lose data, so make sure you back everything up using your favorite backup method

There are 2 type of clean install, one with stock rom and stock recovery and the other for custom rom and custom recovery.
1) Clean install for stock (rooted or not rooted) with stock custom recovery:
a) Go into settings -->backup and restore --> factory reset or boot into stock recovery and select "wipe" icon.
b) Download full Asus firmware, unzip --> renamed then boot into stock recovery and let it installs.
2) Clean install for custom rom/kernel with custom recovery like TWRP or CWM
a) Boot into TWRP and seletct wipe at the home screen (similar procedures for CWM).
b) Select Factory reset, then system, then internal then format sdcard (your device is now super clean and ready for new OS).
Also "dirty flash" is just wiping cache and dalvik cache then install.

You don't wipe the external SD card with the above so you install it from there. However multiple reports that on 4.2.1 TWRP no longer sees some external cards so it is risky to wipe int sd unless you are happy using adb to push files to the tab.

So it would be wise, when a new rom comes out, to have two copies of it? One of external and one on internal? When you make the Instructions would be a good idea to put that in there for the sake of preventing that question. Dont like being commanding, but just a suggestion.

Wipe internal is like wiping your hard disk on your PC, external sd is like your CD rom where your rom/kernal zip files resigned and you will be installing by selecting rom zip from your external SDcard. As sdbags mentioned that TWRP failed to detect your external sdcard (I think this is something TWRP team needs to work it out in the future), a work around with 4.2 is not wipe internal and format sdcard.

Good idea TWRP team desperately need to do some updates. Currently I'm working with another dev (Flumpster) to patch TWRP so it works with the new bootloader. He's already patched the 1200x800 version of TWRP so waiting for him to do the HD version

That's awesome though. No matter they have done a good job. ATM CWM dont even work with the latest stuff, and at least TWRP does. And it shouldnt be to long if the lower res one has already been patched .

Just asked Flumpster the same thing but he didn't tell me - other than it's a 2 min job for him to do it..... May need to analyse his versus the TF300 normal TWRP blobs unpacked

Too risky at the moment. What I did with the TF300 was enforced a flash of the ASUS Stock 4.2.1, then flash the special TWRP and then CROMI. This has resulted in zero bricks so far. We had 2 bricks in the testers when I tried to flash it as one file
The issue with including them all together is I need to test it properly to make sure it is fool proof. I also think it will wipe data this way too - so you will lose everything as the partition table has to be included to rebuild the partitions to be compatible with the new bootloader. Again I need to test it so better to stay safe than risk a brick.

Ah OK got an answer. The mount points are different in 4.2.1 and the system partition needs to be extended to be significantly bigger - 750MB versus only 497MB in 4.1.1
Anyway he is preparing us a version for the TF700
Until then I recommend you don't flash anything although you can use the patched TF300 TWRP as it will just have a much smaller screen and aroma won't know how to calibrate so you'd have to use the volume controls to navigate.

OK, our system partition is already big enough (786 MB), and changing the mount points is easy.

They don't lose any data when Asus do it no. They do with the way flumpster has done it. I think it is because he creates an empty system and data partiton as part of his blob file. (It's 800MB in size but zips up to a few MB)

Ouch, hope some of your testers had nvflash. So you had to flash the stock rom, thus wiping recovery,and then pushing recovery via fastboot then flashing Cromi'd 4.2 over it? I wont be doing nothing ATM. Cromi 3.4.7 running fantastic and I really hope there is no issues with the bluetooth. Just bought a $200 pair of bluetooth headphones and they work quite well ATM, dont want them unusable in the future.

Had I nvflash I would offer to test but I cannot afford a replacement tablet. And even though ASUS only charges a little less to repair, I would have to go through the trouble of them changing the information in their server to allow me to unlock.

[Q] tf700 4.2.1 JB root/unlock steps ??

ok so before i get my head bit off i will start by saying I have been trawling through the forums and searching around and am still drawing blanks and have just been getting more and more confused. so in the hopes of regaining my bearings I ask this,
I bought an asus tf700 tablet it came with 4.2.1 jb installed (the guy updated just before i picked it up OTA)
it was not rooted/unlocked AFAIK at any point.
now I would like to get paranoid android running on it. so my understanding of android (which is very little as i've only ever used an s3 i9305 which was easy to get rooted and ready)
i keep reading through different threads that to unlock the bootloader to get custom roms onto the device it cannot have the updated bootloader that jb 4.2.1 installs but then there are contradictions that state it can be by taking xyz steps then more contradictions stating you must go back to ICS root, preserve root then unlock bootloader and update to JB. but other posts claim doing that is incorrect
then more threads still state that jb can be rooted and unlocked just like any other revision would be but you cannot use the ASUS unlocker for some reasons i didnt quite understand 1 was about asus bricking you for it or tracking you?? and the other was it is not compatible with 4.2 JB only ICS (this is why i keep getting confused. one moment its yes then its no dont do cant be done)
further more it seems that the asus unlocker is the only way to unlock the bootloader on a tf700 but if you cant use it then how can you unlock your bootloader?
i have no idea what direction i am supposed to be going in so here is where i am at the moment
tf700 - stock 4.2.1 jellybean -
kernel version - 3.1.10-g03bdcb1
build number - JOP40D.WW_epad-10.6.1.14.4-20130329
pad EC version - PAD-EC20T-0216
i am hoping to get it rooted+unlcoked to install
paranoid android v 3.15.
so do i need to downgrade to ICS and if so are there any specific steps required or is it a simple copy to SDcard or internal memory and run the stock recovery mode or download mode = install and done or do i need to modify any files or set any specific options?
or can i simply root and unlock it as it is and then flash TWRP or CWM and have SU + install the custom rom and be on my merry way?
sorry if this is considered super simple stuff but coming from the s3 which was a simple point and click with ODIN to get CWM then just copy ROM's to an SD and select flash ROM after clearing data/cache+dalvik this is a lot more complicated..

Nope, I'm here and listening - I'm in exactly the same boat. Seems if you have a totally stock JB tab, there's not much info/guides around about how to actually unlock the bootloader (from which everything else flows - NVFlash, custom recovery, bootloader, root, ROM)

well luckily i got my boat to land and it seems extremely complicated but it is in fact damn easy as hell to get it all working once you get it done right once.
what i done was
downgrade 4.2.1 JB to 4.0.3 ICS just by downloading the 9.4.5.30 firmware file
(using the stock recovery options. which was a pain in the ass because it took me about an hour and a half to get it to work with the file)
which can be found in this thread here
you need to extract the file within the first zip (its a zip within a zip)
you must then rename the zip you extracted to
EP201_768_SDUPDATE.ZIP and place it on the root of your SD card (i believe internal memory works also. but i used an old 1gb SD)
you then turn off the tablet. boot it up by holding power and volume down until you get the menu with 3 icons on screen. you press volume up to access the first option.
if it works it should install and downgrade to ICS all on its own.
in my case for over an hour i just kept getting errors and redownloaded the file many times even though the MD5 was fine. eventually it worked
so you will then be on 4.0.3 ICS which is right where you need to be.
from there you pick your route depending on what you want to do.
if you just want root you can use the automated root tool found in the beginning of this thread
and then there are steps to preserve root and update to stock JB ectect but i did not understand them at all and that was not the way i went
i unlocked the bootloader so i could install a custom ROM (parranoid android in this case)
so you unlock the bootloader by following this thread
but in doing so you lose any warranty you may have had and from what i was able to find it is irreversible. but once that is done you can use the automated root tool and you will be unlocked and rooted on ICS. from there you install GOOmanager from the play store and download TWRP for your TF700 by pressing the menu button (3 buttons in the top right) and select install OpenRecoveryScript
throw any custom rom you want to install on to your SD card
once that is done you can reboot into that recoery mode by swtich the tablet off.
holding volume down and power for boot. a white line of text will appear where you will get 5 seconds to press volume up to access TWRP
from there you need to wipe data a factory reset . then select advance wipe and wipe cache + dalvik cache options
then install the custom rom of your choice which you loaded on to your SD card. Flash and go
now it seems so damn easy im a little annoyed with myself.

Actually, I have seen a couple people successfully unlock on 4.2.1, but I suggest downgrading to 4.1.1 (10.4.4.25 version), unlocking, rooting, installing TWRP via GooManager, flashing the 4.2.1 boot loader, then installing whichever ROM you want.
PS, make sure the rom works on the 4.2.1 boot loader first. Cyanogen Mod, Cromi, and CromiX will work. I am not positive on other ROMS.

So, the Asus unlock tool with work on 10.4.4.25 bootloader? Their website says only compatible with ICS...

You sound like you know your stuff so can I ask, why would my tf700 be running so dreadfully slow? In benchmarks its scoring real low.
Unlocking has lag. Browsing = lag. Anything I do is very very noticeably slow. It's like trying to play a game at 5FPS and dropping.
Tried stock JB and ICS. now using paranoid android. Still extremely slow.
I hear that the force 2D rendering option may be to blame but that hasn't really effected much

Backup all apps on your tablet, factory reset it, flash CromiX 4.3 Final. Then in the last few pages of CromiX flash the Play Store and browser patch. After CromiX is up and running, disable all locations services, unless you use them, go into dev settings and switch all animations to .5x. Next, go into apps and disable what you do not use, such as gmail, etc. This will help your tablet a lot. ParanoidAndroid is one of the slower ROMS for the TF700. CromiX ATM is the fastest right now, even though it is stock built. You must also remember this tablet has a small GPU for pushing full HD screen so gaming is expected to lag by all who have looked over kernals and such. Once a fully stable OC kernal releases, it may be a good idea to try it out. In quadrant with Cromix's default kernal I get about 6200 in quadrant.

Will give that a shot now. I wish I had known about the gpu+screen being a problem before I bought it. Oh well. Hopefully I'll learn more and more about it and things will improve. For now I'm a novice. Will download and flash that rom now.

Well truthfully it is hardly an issue on CROMIX but it can still be seen when doing heavy gaming. Also the cursor jumping is fixed with CROMIX as well this tablet is indeed one of a kind and since you are unlocked the gpu issue shouldn't be a problem.

Tisntrueni am now unlocked. But lag is very high. Downloading cromix now to give that a shot. The only game I've ran on it was conduit to test
What I meant with fps thing was an analogy. If you've had a game run st low low low fps that is what my entire tablets UI is running like. Let's give cromix a try and see if that helps improve things. If not it may be. Hardware fault with my unit (dear god I hope not)

I doubt it. Perform a factory reset before flashing, then flash CROMIX, then load it up and give it ten minutes to stabilize, restore apps, then perform a cold boot.

i ended up in a weird boot loop.
would install the rom get to the finish screen then the boot logo would come up, and hang there. left it for over 15 mins and still stayed there.
how do i get it to boot again ?
thought i had bricked it. but i just loaded the 4.0.3 ICS rom on to an SD and flashed that from recovery (TWRP) just waiting for it to finish installing/loading up.
i think it will be unrooted but remain unlocked now. will try installing a new copy of CromiX. odd though, i checked the md5's before using it and they matched perfectly.

You need to be on 10.4.4.25 which is jb 4.1.1. Then install twrp. One twrp is installed you must flash the twrp and 4.2.1 boot loader zip file. Once the zip file is flagged, boot back into stock 4.1.1. After you but back in, boot into recovery and install CROMIX. That should get you where you need to be but you should not be reading back to ice cream sandwich.

Since you installed the stock ROM twrp will no longer be installed so flash the10.4.4.25 ROM from Asus website and flash it. Then follow the procedure that I have given you.
Meaning that you root, install twrp from goomanager, boot into twrp, flash the twrp and 4.2.1 boot loader, boot back into 4.1.1, then boot back into recovery and flash CROMIX.

It is is the stock 4.2.1 thread is the dev section. It is a zip containing TWRP and the boot loader. It wont hurt to flash it. So yes.
1. Get 10.4.4.25 JB 4.1.1 stock ROM
2. Root using motochopper and install TWRP via GooManager
3. Boot into TWRP and flash the 4.2.1 boot loader and TWRP zip file. It wont hurt to flash it over your current TWRP.
4. Boot back into 4.1.1.
5. Boot into TWRP and flash CROMIX.
That is the process.

I think I know the answer, but I still prefer to ask before.
Today I unlocked my TF700 and start the process (with tutorial) to change the stock rom for the CleanRom.
but I was disturbed several times during the process, and I made several stupid mistakes ...
(like choose an ICS Stock Rom instead CleanRom, and after trying to wipe data to repare my fault)
Now my Tablet was stucked on ASUS logo with "The device is Unlocked""
Or if i try Power & Vol+:
"the device is unlocked."
"android cardhu-user bootloader <2.10 e> released by 'ww_epad-9.4.5.30-20120907' A03"
"Checking for android ota recovery"
"Booting recovery kernel image"
Knowing that I have no access to recovery,
I do not have the USB-Fastboot-RCK icons, and the tablet is not recognized by the PC ...

Did you not install a custom recovery or not? Even if you unlock but do not install a custom recovery, it can be required. Do you get the android laying on his back when booting into recovery?

That is a bad post BTW, lol, Did you install a custom recovery? What is the exact process that you did? Also, if you cannot access recovery, or the boot loader, then yes you are bricked.

Thank for your answer, and that's what I did:
1. Unlock the TF700 with Asus Unlock Tool
2. Flashed the TWRP recovery (with Scott Recovery Install Tools)
3. Pushed the latest CleanRom version on my Internal SD
4. Reboot my TF700 on TWRP Recovery
5. Launched the CleanRom Installation (after the choices screens)
6. Waiting 40 minutes on the spalshscreen ...
At this moment I didn't no what to do because it doesn't seem normal to wait so long ...
So I rebooted to recovery, and I restarted the process. But I've been disturbed by my family and i chose a wrong rom (an ICS Stock Rom).
I had already started the installation when I realized my mistake !
Then i tried this
1. Vol+ & Power to reboot on recovery, but i only saw "WIPE - FASTBOOT - ANDROID" Icons (instead TWRP Recovery)
2. I tried Android Icons > No Result
3. I Tried Fastboot Icons with USB cable plugged > No device in CMD prompt (Fastboot Devices)

Like I said though, if you are unable to get to the boot loader menu or recovery, it is bricked. When you flashed the ICS ROM, was it ASUS' complete stock ROM? Or was it a custom ROM based off the ICS stock ROM?
But as I already said, if you are unable to enter the recovery or bootloader, the tablet is bricked, and cannot be restored unless you have your NVFLASH blobs, which I doubt you do by the way you are speaking.

It was an Asus complete stock ROM.
I also think it's over
I don't have my Nvflash blob and and it's useless because my tab is on the Version 9.4.5.30 and nvflash does not work with this version.

Sorry to hear. When you flashed ics you should of been able to boot back into the ROM and flash 4.2.1 but it's if you tried to boot back in and it didn't work or what. Patience be with you when dealing with Asus because I doubt the price for fixing will be very cheap and you will probably be unable to unlock again.

If you are going to sell it then it is not worth the fixing price for what I have seen in the past. They usually charge $300 for the main board and $100 for labor, so about $400 to get it repaired.

Hello,
yesterday i tried to flash a custom rom for the first time (the CleanRom 3.4.7. DEODEX) on my TF700.
I followed an instruction video that i found in the rom thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2049274), using the adp tool and twrp 2.5 and everything seemed to work fine.
But although the Installation wizzard says that installation has been successful, the Pad hangs on the boot animation.
I tried to install the rom with different settings such as different boot animations or other kernel, but the problem persists.
Any idea what i am doing wrong?

What boot loader are you on? And did you dirty flash or perform a wipe?

I'd almost take you on for a dollar or two you haven't updated your bootloader. I'll split with Tylor. I'm a reasonable guy.

Friendly advice, not a poke: do read up carefully BEFORE flashing anything. A few folks have run into severe bricking issues by not reading carefully enough. A few hundreds bucks to solve a few minutes of impatience (we all know the feeling) does hurt. Tremendously.

Thanks for your tips! I thought that the installation video shows all steps, but i assume i was wrong.
I found the 2nd post and downloaded the 10.4.4.25 WW (Germany) Jelly Bean Bootloader.
How can i now install that bootloader? I am afraid i brick my device if i use just a random instruction, because i already messed the sequence.
Can anybody help me?

through twrp just like the ROM, after doing the bootloader you will have to do the ROM again

wow! That was a fast reply. Unfortunately i still need to post a question (but i am pretty confident that this will be the last )
How can i get the bootloader file to the Transformer? When i conncect the pad to my laptop i can not see it. Even if i boot into the twrp it still does not show up. I also tried the "mount" button but there i can just check/uncheck the boxes for "system" "cache" and "data" and nothing happens when i do that...

In recovery there is in advance I believe BAD side load where you can side load files onto the device but I do not know the PC commands to do so.

I transferred the file via sdcard, flashed the jb boatloader and afterwards the cleanrom and did chose the wipe option. But still the problem persists. Does anybody have an idea what the problem might be?

Try booting without the sdcard in.

I have seen that before. If you are on the JB 4.2 bootloader version 10.6.1.14.4, flash CROMi-X (latest version is 4.5), not CROMi 3.4.7. Look for the thread here on XDA.
I don't know why, but for people coming from stock, the 4.2 bootloader doesn't seem to play nice with CROMi.....

I updated th bootloader to 10.6.1.14.4 WW, did a wipe and afterwards installed the CROMi-X 4.5 Version as it is described in the instruction and again did a wipe. But still it does not work. I also tried to boot without micro SD but that does not make a difference.
For some reasons it is also not possible to shut down the tablet. If i keep the power down button pressed down, the tablet shuts down, but immediately reboots (until the battery is empty or i enter the TWRP).
Any further ideas? i am really kind of desperate right now

Make sure you flash the boot loader file, reboot, wait for the blue bar to load all the way (takes about a minute) device will reboot itself, at this point if it sticks on the animation, force reboot to twrp, flash ROM and reboot.

After you flashed the bootloader, did you reboot into the old rom or did you immediately flash CromiX?
You have to reboot before flashing the rom.
