Do apps require a certain version of Android to be compatible? - General Topics

As on ios I know some apps will only work on versions above xxxx. Do android apps require a minimum version for them to work on, or will they generally run on any version?

yes, depending on your android version. all apps should work on 4.2.2 , but there are apps which require 4.0+ or 2.3+ etc. which won't work on cupcake/donut/froyo, on play store you will only see applications compatible with your device.

I assume most apps to try to be backwards compatible where they can?

Most old apps will remain backwards compatible. But some of the new arrivals are 4.0+ only.
Its easier for the developers to work on apps to limited to newer android versions.

Indeed it's easier for developers to not have to worry about backwards compatibility. The testing alone would save lots of time.
If you check the right hand side of the Play store, you can see the "REQUIRES ANDROID" info to find out if the app is backwards compatible.
For example, all of our apps for compatible since 2.1 because that's when the first version of it came out. We've been updating since then.

Yes, they do work with certain versions.

I guess so. Different cooked ROM with the same version also might be a problem. Such as HTC HD2 cyanogenmod ROM with MIUI ROM which is same version, when my cyanogenmod wanna use an app of MIUI ROM it failed in install.

So it doesn't look like any one ells said it but they play store will only show apps that are compatible with your phone(or at-least let you download them). Also on the play store website on all app pages in the far right info area it says "REQUIRES ANDROID: x.x and up". One last not is this information is set by the dev and it my not have been tested as extensively on say 2.3 or 2.1. Also even if it has been tested updates could break compatibility.

This mostly pertains to root applications that where designed for a specific rom. The one thing to remember is how compatible is your rom with others. If its based off CM then it will probably work with CM mods. Also make sure your busy box is updated and that the app doesn't need to be installed as a system app.

Google Apps is provided in a separate zip (due to licensing restrictions by Google). You can download the zip from HERE (all the way at the bottom in the "Google Apps Version" section.... you want to download the HDPI zip for CyanogenMod 7).
Flash the zip in recovery.

Hello, sorry for hijacking your thread...but I really want to ask this question...
I've read the cyanogen's website...but are there any difference other than the listed features such as lock screen gestures, phone goggles....etc?
There are ROMs like Infusion, Refused...and how are they fundamentally different?
Finally...I've been sporadically checking the CM7 thread in the development section...seems like people are already having CM7 on their infuse...where did they find the zip for the flash?
Thanks in advance for answering my question =D

CM7 is based on the Android Open Source Project source code base.
The advantage of being based off of AOSP is that once an initial device bringup has been made, it is MUCH easier to track new Android versions. e.g. CM7 is at Android 2.3.5 (the latest Gingerbread). It is also much easier to modify since we have the source code for nearly everything.
Also, once device bringup is complete, CM7 doesn't have the crippled Bluetooth stack that Samsung provides.
Of course, the issue is - when device bringup is complete. We're still in the process of doing device bringup for the Infuse, so things are missing. Interestingly enough, CM7 on the Infuse now has Bluetooth functionality (Input devices, etc.) that basically covers what Samsung's stack doesn't - and the stuff Samsung's stack does (Audio) is what we're missing.

[Q] Steam APk

Hi guys,
I have a SGS2 running ICS and i cant download Steam from the app market (cant post a link as i dont have enough posts, but its Steam as in Valve Corp for PC gaming etc).
Its saying my device isnt compatible?! Can someone post a download for the APK?
Would really appreciate it.
Regards Matt.
Well are you sure that the new Steam app is available for Android 4 ICS? there's a lot of apps not compatible with ICS yet, so maybe that's exactly why you can't install it.
The app is new as well and they're currently in a closed Beta fase, so it's normal that it may not work on ICS.
I didnt think of that. But then a lot of apps i cant download on the market because of this "incompatibility" issue i google the apk and manage to download them and they work fine.
Also this is the latest review left: "nextjonas on January 28, 2012 (Samsung Nexus S with version 1.0)
Received my invite yesterday
And it's really great so far. Everything I ever wanted from Valve! However, the RAM usage can peak at 100MB. This usage even killed other running processes like whatsapp service :O though nice app & looking forward for coming features =)"
Im assuming his device is running ICS 4.0? Also i think the picture of the device running steam mobile in the market is a Nexus S
Regards
Have you tried uninstalling+reboot and reinstalling+reboot and then try to open the app?
I've just installed Steam from the market on my SGS2 with AndyX ICS ROM v3.1 and it opened smoothly and fast, i just can't log in because i don't have an account... so this means that it IS compatible with ICS. Maybe your ROM has some issues with that? is it stable with other apps?
Yeah all my other apps work fine. Il give AndyX ICS ROM v3.1 a try and see how it goes. Before i do tho is it stable?
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions &

Moving to Q&A
Yes, AndyX's v3.1 is stable but of course has some issues like any other ICS. He's now working on the LP6 version (latest leaked official samsung stock rom), the one it's based in now is the LP2 but it works well.
I'm waiting for his LP6 version though, meanwhile i'm testing other roms but so far Andy's is the one i liked the most.
Installed on sandvolds ics for desire ok for me, doubt it is an ics issue.
Just need an invite now...
Just installed AndyX ICS ROM v3.1 and its brilliant!! thanks for recommending it to me, also managed to install all of the apps i previously couldn't!

Ultimate Special Fx for TB?

Is there a working TB ROM that would allow us to download and play this App "Ultimate Special Fx"
It says it requires Android v2.3.7 Gingerbread or higher to run.
I'm running ThunderShed CM7 , when I last checked said it was 2.3.7.
Any thoughts ??
android versions
i've never heard of or used ultimate special fx, but you are correct, thundershed is android version 2.3.7. as i'm unfamiliar with the app in question, and am not sure if there are other hardware/software prerequisites to running the app besides the android version, i can only break down android versions types of roms use as a base. the open mobile leak/mr4 roms are android version 2.3.6. the roms based off of 2.11.605.9 are android 2.3.4 i believe. but yes, in theory, thundershed should be able to run the app.

Thanks for your reply here is the link to the APP. I was also looking for prerequisites but all that is says 2.3.7 and above. I'm wondering if Play Store is set to block all TB roms till the official ICS for TB is released by VZW.
Check out Ultimate Special Fx on Google Play! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.techcatmobile.ultimatespecialfx
Yes, play store restricts apps you can view based on your device id and android version for compatibility reasons, and to protect consumers from purchasing apps they can't run. Also, devices can be blocked from viewing apps in play store because the developer has chosen to restrict them or doesn't support them. Custom roms also sometimes change the device id in the build prop to one that play store doesn't understand or recognize. It's still possible to get around this though. You can either download the app from your computer and move it to your phone, or modify your build prop file with a root browser to reflect a different and compatible device and obtain the app normally. With either course of action, the app chainfire3D can be used to scale the graphical/processing demands of ultimate special fx to fit the thunderbolt's gpu. Keep in mind, I personally haven't tried to do this, it's just a suggestion to try if you're bound and determined to get the app. Hope that helps.

The 'From_4_3' refers to if you're coming from the partition layout that was used with 4.3.
You see, the 4.4 kk ota changed the blocks that each partition uses. So if you've never flashed to the ota then use the 'From_4_3.' But if you flashed the ota you will need to use the 'From_4_4' version.

I was under the assumption that 1.40.401.1 was the latest Rom base. Would we not want the latest?

That's that playstore version not the rom, on a ota from HTC on 4.2.2 are only really minor updates like HTC speak seems to get updated and minor camera tweaks and noticed alot off Google bloat apps just to give a little taste of kitkat has afew was added to the ota for 1.40 but hard to tell has they was no information about it. But major changes is if the rom was upgraded to 4.3 or 4.4 but has being a custom Rom the changes can be made by porting or using updates from the HTC one or any other from of updates or modded apps. HTC updates doesn't mean they're the best has has you all have come to use custom build roms so don't anyways think the ota is the best because in my opinion it's just mainly aload of bloat from HTC trying to get out of making big updates for this device. Pushing little ota's to keep people happy but really slacking behind the rest of the devices

Thank you for explaining. Now I understand a lot more about it. Do you know if there are ways to unroot the mini atm? Because I need to return it to att for a replacement because there are cracks on the white plastics. Really this should be posted in Q&A not in this thread has it's disrespectful has it's not a question about the rom. But you need a ruu to go back to out of the box, unrooted, locked so it looks untamperd. But has again HTC lack big time on ruu too. Can't find any atm it's a big disappointment that this phone lacks such software for people to recovery their phones if needed. Only way I would suggest is use the stock Rom and install using stock kernel/boot.img the fastboot recovery.img found in a ota.zip then fastboot oem lock that will relock bootloader but that's close has you will get I think.
and also keep the theme from 0.7 if you can
Kernel is unrooted right?

I can't actually see much about it on the HTC One Mini from a quick search... in the old days (on the HTC One) there was a zip that was required because HTC stripped out some of the features IIRC - can't see that or any for the latest version and after installing xposed it seems to lose settings each reboot... any advice?

[Q] run android 4.0 apps on gingerbread

hi ! Members
pleas  is there is any way to run android 4.0 apps on gingerbread and thanks
Running Android 4.0 on Gingerbread doesn't particularly make any sense.
What you really mean is, is there any way to run Android 4.0 on your phone? Assuming it's a yes, yes it is possible. It all comes down to what phone you have and if your phone has aftermarket firmware or official updates of the newer os.
If you want the feel of Android 4.0 then j suggest you download a launcher called "Holo Launcher" from the Play Store™.
If that's not what you want, and you want the full package, whole android update of 4.0 then yeah as said. It comes down to your device if it had enough support from members here or the manufacturer itself.

i forget to write apps i mean is there is any way to run app which require android 4 to run on gingerbread
If that is the case then no, android 4.0 uses new API, and therefore it will not work on gingerbread. If you attempt to install an Android 4.0 app it will come up with and error "problem parsing package".
So once again, nope, you cannot install android 4.0 ( ICS ) Apps on gingerbread.

my phone is samsung gt-5360 but i can't find real ics with no bugs thanks for you so much krishneelg3
There are Applications on the Play Store which is from new android platforms, but will work on older platforms. Search for ICS messaging, camera, gallery. From there you'll find more. And no worries.
Also keep track about the info given fro aftermarket Roms, as developers try to fix everything and soon enough most of the bugs are gone and the ROM can be used a a daily driver.

there are lots of ics+ roms for your device, they all cant be completely buggy, you even have kitkat which is awesome for this small phone.
