Rebuild Rogers kernel for tethering

I've got Ubuntu up and running and I'm willing to rebuild the kernel to enable tethering.
Problem 1 is that I have not received my Magic yet
Problem 2 is that I have no idea what I need to do
So who wants to help?

I'll help. I've got tethering working using Azilink, but it would be nice to get it working using the Hero's built-in tethering option. Here's my post at ubuntuforums.org:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1202059
So are you rebuilding the kernel to get the iptables? I can't even get to make Ubuntu see the Magic as a communications device now.
It took me about 15 minutes to get the SDK up and running on Ubuntu 32 bit but I don't know where to find the source for the kernel or evena copy of the kernel itself. Once I have those it shouldn't take more than 5 minutes to compile the kernel including iptables. In fact if I had the source to a kernel that does allow tethering it would be even faster because I could just drag and drop what I need into the build directory. I haven't seen the source but I think that the HTC branded kernel only differs by a few files and it might even be easier to move the HTC files to the Google kernel. Need more help and testers.

Do you have the port tools? They allow you to unpack the boot.img. I'll upload the port tools for you:
http://www.mediafire.com/?fnzdtnj4gmy
Just put all of the tools in your /android/tools folder.
To unpack the boot.img, you just have to run this command:
unpack-H.pl boot.img

That's it. Good-luck. Messing around with the kernel is way above my know-how.
@hotweiss thanks a bunch
This guide shows you how to push the IP tables on the Magic:
http://android-unleashed.com/2008/1...d-g1-phone-with-iptables-no-proxy-needed.html
do I just need to incorprate the iptables binary with the kernel when I build it. Again I haven't seen either kernel to compare them.

Haven't done it myself yet, but it looks like it's just an issue of following a few steps. The biggest problem right now is to make Ubuntu see the Magic as a modem.
again I don't have my magic yet so I can't comment on that but if anyone has a google branded version could you please check and see if you can get ubuntu to recognize it as a modem. if so then we know that it has only to do with the kernel itself.
EDIT: Also I can't get unpack-H.pl to work, i keep getting bash: /home/sammy/android-sdk-linux_x86-1.5_r2/tools/unpack-H.pl: Permission denied

well you dint need go all the steps , just pushing iptables and insmod should be enough if you use wifi tethering app. but is the kernel in htc magic and g1 the same , do they run the same binary ?
i will check it but dont know if it works.
Edit :
No ipfilter in the kernel = not working
the binary itself works just fine (strange)
its because the kernel is missing netfilter too. there are actually 3 things we require for this to work. we need to build netfilter as a module, build iptables as a module and then include the iptables binary so that other programs can talk to it. unfortunately i don't have a magic but if you could pm me your im screen names we could do this faster

Things will be complicated by the fact that the Rogers and T-Mobile Magic's are different. I'm still confident that we'll work it out.
hotweiss the google branded ion does not require these modules

I thing this can solve update the aosp to 2.2.1 on lg p500.
If you can try Prime v2 ROM, it's 2.2.1
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=881045
what BT stack does Prime use? I've asked LG and they told me, that the do not plan to support HID on Opimus One.
SUCCESS
Already I could have connected it but not with android I using the bluez tools:
here the steps(root needed):
in terminal or adb shell(wifi, usb generate problems):
echo 1 > /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/state
hciattach -n -s 115200 /dev/ttyHS0 any &sleep 5
hciconfig hci0 up
hcitool scan (for device address)
hidd --connect (device address in format 00:00:00:00:00:00)
great!
which rom do you use?
could work with this keyboard?
thanks
My ROM amberhome-1.1
I think yes working with this method teoricaly with all hid keyboards but i don't sure only have Nokia keyboard I don't try with other.
But dont power on the bluetooth with android frezze the phone.
Whem I have time develop an android apk.(comming soon)
Bye
Works even with Bluetooth mini keyboard! THANK YOU!!!!
cant wait it to get ready.
I also you amberhome 1.5 on my LG P500. And have a chinfai keyboard.
Perhaps curvin (maker of amberhome) could directly integrate it?
hello, i tried the above steps but when i start hciconfig it returns me that:
hcitool scan
Code:
link_image[1997]: failed to link hcitool
CANNOT LINK EXECUTABLE
it seems the hcitool executable doesn't want to run in my phone...
stock rom?
Trying on an Optimus T with stock ROM (v10l). hciconfig and/or hciattach gives a device not found error.
Will it be possible to get this working with just a kernel upgrade or is there something else needed?
Trying with a different kernel, I don't get the device error anymore, but connectbot says the shell disconnected after I run hidd. At any time after connecting hid0 if I try to do something bluetooth-related, such as turn bluetooth on if it was off, or scan for devices if it had already been on, the phone locks up. Sometimes it reboots in a minute or two after that, sometimes I have to pull the battery to get it to reboot so I can try again.
The kernel I am using at the moment is the "touchscreen issues" kernel.
CM7 - IT WORKS THERE LIKE A CHARM !
I had some conversation with LG earlier and they do not plan the HID support in their android phones.
Success at last
I have no intention currently changing my current stock (+rooted) software and risk losing functionality or stability - the 2.3.3 LG stock currently works perfectly. On the other hand, I'm using francos kernel, so I can have overclock and the tun module I'm planning to change those few lines of code into a simple app so I can easily activate my BT keyboard (sold on DX) quickly on the road. If I manage to do that, I might go ahead and create the ability to change the layout, so the keyboard(s) could be used to full potential. Probably will get some free time in the end of the month.
@ahvenas, so you are saying it works better with 2.3.3 LG stock than it did with 2.2.1?

Thanks a bunch for the quick reply
1. Are you referring to this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=946354
If so how's the ROM compared to past ROMs you've used ? I read lots of people having problem with GPS either not working or failed to lock satellites.
2. Btw are you using P500 ? I have P509, should work though right? Sorry n00b has too many questions before proceding lol.
Terrific news though with HID BTKB working
3. Were the additional apps needed for the wiimote only, BTKB worked w/o any additional drivers ?
=================================
4. And while we're at it, I might as well ask you if this is correct procedure to switch to a new ROM
(1) nandroid/Backup&restore (using CWM) old ROM >> reboot
(2) Wipe every single thing wipe-able (data, cache, dalvik cache, batt stats)
& to be sure it's shiny clean use this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11785758&postcount=557
to wipe the system as well
>> reboot
(just to confirm, once rooted, always rooted, even after wiping all those right ? )
(3) Partition SD card so that it'd work well with Link2SD (unless there are better alternatives)
(3) flash mik's new CM7 port stable 6.5.8 >> reboot
(4) flash gapps >> reboot >> DONE.
(5) -optional- if GPS has issues back to recovery and flash this:

[KERNEL] corvusKernel |.32|CIFS|TUN|EXT4|SLAB|CFQ|WiFi|NTFS|HOST/SLAVE|PL2303|XPAD

Hi all.
I make a new kernel based in Buzz Vega, but with some changes.
1) All modules (but wifi) are now integrated into kernel, so no more insmod modules.
2) Added support for PL2303 and FDTI usb to serial chips (Usb Gps, usb-serial cable, etc.)
3) Added support for Xbox 360 PAD (wired or wireless with pc adaptor)
Notes:
1) To boot in host mode, press on, once you have black iluminated, release on button and press back until boot finished.
2) Usb Gps and Xbox pad are detected by kernel but not useable in android by now. I'm working on it.
3) To mount CIFS shares, you can use Mount Manager or Cifs Manager from market
4) To use NTFS (and possibly EXT4) you must mount manually. I'm working in do it automatically. Using ConnectBot:
Code:
$su
#busybox mount /dev/block/sda1 /mnt/usbdisk
And you get yout memory at /mnt/usbdisk and can access it with any file manager.
INSTALL:
This must be installed using CWM, and use this zip as update. MAKE ALLWAYS A NANDROID BACKUP BEFORE
If you was using Buzz Vega, can delete .ko files from /system/lib/modules, because they are not used (now integrated into kernel).
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13580211/corvusKernel_01.zip
Thanks Buzz, Paul "Modaco", Koush, and all great helping people at #tegratab.
Corvus.
PS: If you prefer speak spanish with me, please PM.
Awesome work with the Xbox360 controller. What kernel module did you use to achieve that? Just getting in to kernel stuff with the Vega so please excuse if my question is a little basic.
You can search for Xpad in .config or advent_vega_defaultconfig.

Hey corvus,
I just wanted to say thanks! Your kernel is running great on my POV mobii and I don't experience the root- or bsod-problems I had with buzz-vega kernel. Also the cifs integration works fine.
greetings...
Great to see developers starting to work on the Advent.
Installed this kernel on my Advent Vega. It seems the device came to live. Performance is much better now. Suspending and resuming now works better. Wifi resuming works great. Very nice job with this kernel, very nice indeed
what adapter do you use? using xbox remote would be amazing
None by now... they are detected by kernel, but not used by android... working on it.
Corvus.
i thaught as much. good luck with that using an xbox remote on a ps1 emulator would rock!
hi! what about the kernel source + config?
like to add dvb-t and bluetooth hid (doesn't detect that my bt keyboard is a keyboard..)
and ive got some strange issues with the orientation sensor, seems like its shifted to the left so when i want to get into landscape mode i must rotate it much more to the right side (so i used the lock that i can work with that). No issue with CM7.
EDIT: ive got an xbox 360 wireless controller for windows (with the usb reciever), do i need to have some external apps or something to use this?

Sorry by the delay.
Sources and default config are here: https://github.com/BuzzBumbleBee/android_kernel_advent_vega/
For dvb-t you will need some kind of program to reproduce video...

No problem
There is an DVB project for Archos devices, maybe this is a start..

i think that you refer to wifi firmware...
I found this problem too...
You must edit wifi sources (/drivers/networking/wireless/ath/ath6k/.../ar6000.c, if i remember correclty). Search for firmware and change all paths to /system/lib/hw/wlan (if i remember correctly, search in this path for files).
you can recompile only wifi module, not need to recompile all kernel.
If you have any other problems with firmware, you need to change sources, because /lib/firmware is a bad place, because /lib is not created. Is better to point to /system/lib.
Corvus.

Hey thanks for your interest in this nice phone and in my thread!
Sorry for late reply but yesterday I managed to install Google Play with a tutorial from this site too but for Kindle Fire.
I used Root Explorer and have done as you say too and it works flawlessly ^^.
The problem is that I don't know how to install a recovery.
I hope more people have this nice phone and we are able to share as much info as we can, I really like it. My last phone was a Samsung Galaxy Spica and I am tired of it because it's crap >_<.
Thank you so much for you effort!
P.S: btw, I would want to know whether there are different versions of GoogleFramework or Vending, because I don't know if they have to be the same for it to work. I mean, with the actual Google Framework and Vending I can still continue updating Google Play app or it will crash since I have to update to the same version the other two?

Hey I have a question about your procedure: what's the use of ETC, FRAMEWORK and LIB folders?, I just moved all the apk and fixed permissions and everything works fine. I could even install Google Maps and use it without problems and I can see inside FRAMEWORK folder there's something related with Google Maps so in the PERMISSIONS folder.
Just installing the apk's will give me any problem in the future?
Thanks for your effort!

Ohhh, I'm so sorry.
Can't you put the phone into Download Mode by pressing volume+ power buton?
I wonder how to do a firmware backup so you can restore the phone with it using Odin and return it to life. I would be good in case we do further unsuccessful moves T_T. It's a pity I'm not an android developer or pro and I can't help you as much as I would want, sorry.

This incident wouldn't have happened if i had a backup and restore function in recovery!! I have found a chinese website with the changhong z-me firmware but i cant download because I'm a newbie apparently i have to 52 prestiege to download?! I think the firmware is a .nb0 as in the recovery there is a option for "download nb0 from sd card". I have found a website on how port CWM. http://www.acsyndicate.net/how-to-porting-cwm-to-other-devices-os-x-part1/
Good news is i got a z-me firmware but when i flash PID doesnt match or something. Dude can you plz do me a favour. If u can check for update for ur phone and then share it on this thread! So i can recover my phone.
Dude can u plz provide me ur phones build.prop (it hasnt got anything personal (just incase your wondering )) i just need to check something as i cant access my phone.
Thanks
Hello, sorry for late reply!.
Well, I don't know how to check PID, the info I cal tell you is:
Baseband Version: PCR
Kernel Version: Apps_2.6.32.9-perf
Build Number: 7001_3_180
I don't know whether that info is useful to you, but that's what it says in the "about phone" section, among other trivial things.
And as for the update you say, there's a "check for updates" option inside the phone, but it always says there's no update avaliable.
I will try to find some info about the phone in some chinese sites.
About the build.prop thing you say, I paste you the text:

P.S: By the way, I have noticed that the WIFI module makes my phone very hot and my girlfriend's one too. The worst thing is that when I active the wifi the battery only lasts 6-8 hours and that's not normal. Maybe some issue with drivers? I have seen the module is WCN1314 but the drivers are WCN1312 I have seen somewhere, is that normal?
Hey! good news.
I found a site which seems huge about phone official and custom ROMS from china (http://www.shendu.com/), but Changhong Z-Me isn't listed. I think it's a matter of time it will appear in there I think. I just have tested the phone with antutu test 2.9.4 (gave me 3010) and there are more Changhong's Z-Me, but some have ICS 4.0.3!.
I hope we can get ICS or Jelly Bean for this nice phone, ar at least some custom Gingerbread roms ^^
EDIT1: I have also found a person explaining how to recover the mobile or something like that (it is translated with google sorry). Check this out, and let's hope it can solve the problem:
http://bbs.ahong.com/viewthread.jsp?tid=686&extra=page203D1
Yes hopefully we do!!! The thing is MSM 7227A gets ICS and the MSM 8255 doesnt eventhough its better?! Hopefully i can recover my phone! I think the recovery is in beta mode as somethings don't work.
I would say just the CPU isn't enough because if so we would be able to put even Jelly Bean, because MSM8255 CPU is so spreadly used. I wish I could be an Android programmer >_<.

Hey, I've got a new problem about the phone. It isn't that important, but it gives on my nerves: the phone deletes any contact I edit. After pressing "done" button it deletes the contact and a pup up message tells me that "the contact does not exist".
I don't want to install another phone book because I like this one, simple and fast, and it does not eat much RAM, aspect which I consider very important.
A thing would be to replace this phone and address book with the Gingerbread stock ones, but I've been reading that it could make a crash loop in the phone.
Have you repaired yours already?
Let's keep in touch!

Maybe I'll look in to this problem! No i haven't repaired my phone yet as I'm busy with my studies so hopefully I will be able to get it up and running again soon! Hopefully someone will be able to get CWM/TWRP recovery up and running on this device!!

It's someway nice, I managed to repair the problem I was having with the missing edited contacts. Now the phone edits and saves them with no problems ^^. In case you have this problem in the future, I explain what I did:
1 - Backup all contacts to your Gmail, vcard or csv file.
2 - Turn sync contacts off (all accounts) and delete all contacts in your phone.
3 - Go to all applications and look for one called "Contacts Storage".
4 - Do a "Clear Data" and turn on Sync Contacts again, or whether you prefer import them all from the vcard file.
*If you use SIM contacts I don't know whether the program would delete them as it does with the ones stored in the phone, I didn't tested it.
Greetings.
My phone is alive

Hey!, sorry for the late reply.
I'm really happy you could fix it. I've been out from PC because of studies and family, but now I have some spare days jeje.
I have to say I also updated my changhong with the original firmware and the logo is as you say, and it swept out almost every annoying chinese app LOL.
I installed again the google fix and everything is working flawlessly.
P.S: btw, the google fix you uploaded lacks Google Calendar. IT does not matter, because I just installed Calendar and it works fine, no problems so far. Thanks again.
P.S 2: I noticed you added a link for the recovery file. I found another recovery file which seems to be different to the one you found (different size). I found in the official changhong forum (here's the link: http://bbs.ahong.com/viewthread.jsp?tid=1933&extra=page=2 ). Should it be other CWM version?, I still didn't try it, that why I ask, maybe you did .

For system required ~4gb. If your partition 8gb, you can use 4-4.5gb for user data, and etc. And will not be errors.
Now i trying fix jack detection it very, very hard. GPS also hard fix, but i will be try fix it also, but later.

Got it, thanks!
Great work, I had this tablet just lying around for 2 years, with win10 it is next to nothing, but now it has a new life. :victory:
Other things I found not working properly:
No mobile data, not have any settings
Chromecast does works on some apps only, direct screen mirroring doesnt work, it tries to connect but gets disconnected instantly, my TV is also Android 7.0 ( I have seen this alot with android devices though)
Google play services crashes a lot
Can not connect the original BCK800 bluetooth keyboard, says the PIN is incorrect.
-M
this is great solution! Other versions do not have sound or does not work normally. Really hoping some updates on jack, camera and gps fix.
some other things that i also noticed.
- google play keeps crashing also on me. No idea why. Everything seems to work even after crash.
- sometimes, when screen is off, it takes few minutes to wake up after pressing power button. Screen lights up but takes some time to get any picture on the screen.
- sometimes after the screen has been off, when you wake it up, the automatic screen rotation stops working. No idea why. But i have solved this with Macdroid by forcing it to needed rotation.
- some apps keep crashing (for example Amazon Kindle). most apps are ok.
- mine BCK800 keyboard does not work also. But this seems to be keyboard issue as Lenovo have different types of keyboards on Android and windows. This specific keyboard works only on windows environment. Can't connect it either on my HTC phone.
Great work!

Or if you want can try install my build android x86 on your tablet, seems it really, some people doing it, but how i'm don't know, no android version bay trail tablet.
