Question about backing up and Un-rooting. - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I am looking to root but I still a few questions.
So if I don't flash roms or anything to revert to stock could i just use the factory reset built in to phones settings app (Razr HD XT925) and would that make it back to a fresh phone with no signs of root?
Also if i am going to flash roms and kernels if take a nandroid backup then even if I switch roms or kernels I can restore using the backup to stock rom and then I can just factory reset after i restore from my backup through the factory restore in settings to make it like a brand new phone agian?
Last question, say I wanted to get warranty would they be able to tell it was rooted if I did one of the two steps above? Sorry for all the questions I just kinda want to figure this out before I root my phone.
Thanks
-Riley

1. that will not return to stock, that is not a flash. You would need to install the whole OS using once of the flash utilities.
You can remove root by getting rid of the SU application and such. They may or may not be able to tell. I've sent rooted phones back for warranty with no issues.
2. You would have to remove safestrap, etc. But yes you can go back to stock.
3. If done correctly, no they can't tell.

Number 3 is not true. There is a second method that shows rooted status that right now can't be changed. I'm sure a method to fix that can be devised now with the unlocked bootloader but that in itself is irreversible.

[Q] Switch out kernel without Flashing?

I ordered a Nexus S which will be here next week. I am not sure yet if I will keep it and the main test will be to see how I like the Voodoo Sound. I am scared to flash and rather not if I can avoid it(for the reason of possibly returning it).
Is it possible to unroot the phone and just switch out the stock kernel with the stock Voodoo patched kernel from Trinity?...without flashing the phone?
I can say voodoo sound makes a HUGE difference. Worth rooting etc just for that if music is important to you seriously voodoo is fantastic.
Short answer, yes. See thread:

Just unlock the phone, root it and flash it. The phone can be returned to stock and the bootloader can be relocked making it look like nothing ever happened.
Restore to stock, just use the Nandroid stock recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884093
Relock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875630

Unlock's not necessary, and I think we should always mention that if you choose the unlock method you will wipe ALL data on the phone, including sdcard. Probably not an issue for someone rooting right out of the box, but if someone's used their phone for any amount of time, they might want to backup pics and stuff that will be wiped with the oem unlock command.

[Q] I must be doing it wrong. Is there an easier way to get back to stock?

Hey, guys-
I'm unrooted and running stock Android. I have all of my settings and apps exactly how I like them right now.
In the past, I've flashed different ROMs and Kernels. When I get tired/frustrated with them and want to revert back to stock, I usually just do the 1 click revert back to factory settings. When you do that, it... well.. erases anything and everything in order to get back to factory settings.
Nothing is broke. I just don't want to delete my SD card contents and lose root. I just want to revert to the stock kernel and ROM from another ROM and kernel.
I was wondering if there's an easier way to get back to my current settings on the stock Android and Kernels WITHOUT using the 1 click revert back to factory method? If there is, could you PLEASE tell me how to do it EXACTLY? I say that because sometimes people on here give instructions that are clear as mud. Thanks!
Factory reset does NOT restore kernels or roms. It simply wipes user data.
You're confused. What you really want is a nandroid back up
If you have ROM Manager installed, open it up and go to "Download ROM". At the very bottom of the list, there should be a selection that says "Stock Images". I'm pretty sure you can use that to get back to stock. I'M NOT POSITIVE, I've never tried it before. It may unroot your phone/get rid of clockwork mod recovery. Just a suggestion

That is to relock your bootloader. Just flash a stock rom in recovery with a full wipe, You'll be unrooted.
Stock roms can be found here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664
It's also wise to keep your content copied on a folder on your comp. 5 minutes of copying back and you got it all back. If you got all that sorted what you should always do is once you've got a stock rooted rom, run a nandroid backup/backup restore from CWM before you flash new roms / kernels.

[Q] Whats the best way to...

Ok so Ive decided to head back to stock. While all this is flashing and what not is fun and maybe invigorating to some, its gotten me worried that my phone is going to explode in my hand or something. I just dont want to cause any problems with my new shiny phone. Can you tell my noob-ness level? lol So Im running CR 2.5 and LiquidSmooth before that. While there is nothing wrong with CR im just too nervous every time I see something unusual.
I have a nandroid BU of Stock with root and unlocked BL and CWM flashed. If I format system, Format data, Format cache and restore that nandroid. Im back to stock ROM and everything with root, correct?
If I choose to unroot, do I have to use ODIN, or is there another way? I pretty much want to go back to getting OTAs but dont want to loose all my Apps. Can I stay rooted, then lock the bootloader and accept OTAs?
Now I also have BUs in TB and MYBackup. If I choose to unroot how do I get my backups restored if Im not rooted?
What are my best options? Suggestions, links are greatly appreciated?
Anybody?

Yes me! So first of all there are the OTA's in the development section I believe. And you can just flash the OTA to your rooted device description is in the forum. Second If you would want to get back to stock non rooted the best way would be to ODIN also don't forget to reset the flash counter if you needed to return the device to verizon or anything.
Also you can find the latest stock rooted in the development section with all OTA's included. I wouldn't un-root if I were you just because of all the good stuff that is possible with root.
And I just want to tell you that your pretty safe your phone won't explode or anything like that. just make sure you follow the instruction correctly and your phone shouldn't over-heat or drain the battery so on. And even if something drain's the battery check the section where you downloaded the ROM from and you will find the solution easy as 1-2-3.
Use the little search button upper corner on the right hand side if you have any questions in the verizon GS3 section of course and you will find everything you need.
If I have a little time later today, I will link you the OTA's and the latest stock-rooted ROM if you can't find it.

[Q] Verizon Update Lost Root

Hi All:
I was having some signal quality issues and Verizon had my apply the newest software update available. I was rooted, but after the update i lost root. It said the update failed, but it also says my phone is up to date. Now when I reboot the phone one of the screens says "Samsung Custom" with a a picture of an un-locked lock (i don't believe it showed that before).
1) Can i go through the process of rooting again without screwing up my phone? Do i need to do anything prior to rooting again if I can root again?
2) What does that screen on the reboot menu mean?
3) Should i bother to do Verizon software updates in the future?
Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, I couldn't find a thread in my search. Thanks for your help!
This has been discussed to death, especially in the thread that YOU read to root your phone. You NEVER take an OTA update when rooted. You will most defiantly lose root with the possibility of locking your bootloader and never being able to root again or unlock the bootloader. Since you are this deep, you can do 1 of 2 things. 1. Sit tight and see what is figured out. 2. Odin to a pre-rooted image, restore your backup, and wait to see what the devs say about it.

Well I guess I forgot that little bit of valuable information. So does that reboot screen just mean my bootloader is locked? Also, my backup was deleted somehow during the update process. I tried to go into recovery and load my backup, but it is no longer available.
If you have an unlocked lock, I would thing that would mean unlocked, right? Do you still have your custom recovery?

I have ROM Manager, which i used to access CWM. But if i try to boot into recover from a power off state it says "System Software not authorized by VZW has be found on your phone. Please turn off your phone and go to the nearest VZW store for help." At the top of that screen in red it says "Secure Fail: Kernel." So that leads me to believe I don't have a custom recovery anymore, correct?

Follow the steps here to root the new OTA: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439. The unlocked lock and custom when you boot up actually does mean that your bootloader has been relocked. Strange way to show it though. You could wait until mrRobinson updates his no wipe odin factory images but that might be a couple days. I always use that method instead.

Ok yeah I'll check that out if he updates this week. Do I need to do a factory reset or anything or just leave my phone as is for now?

You don't have to reset anything if you don't want to. You can flash the full wipe or no wipe version. Everybody has their own preferences, I like the no-wipe versions. I usually avoid taking the Verizon OTAs directly by disabling the software update service with Titanium Backup Pro since they screw up root and the bootloader. I wait until there is an ODIN flashable image of it. Others prefer to take the OTA and root using the guide above, or flash the odex or deodex versions in recovery like the ones here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2177798.

Just want to make sure I'm using the right stuff to unroot

Droid Razr Maxx HD
9.18.79.XT926
Android 4.1.2
Rooted it using Dan Rosenberg's root method here: http://goo.gl/cbJzT. Never unlocked or installed any recovery.
As I'm now going to be selling the phone to my uncle, I don't want it rooted. I just want to go back to out of the box stock in case he needs to go to VZW for help.
Is the DROID RAZR HD Utility 1.33 option 1 from here ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2474393 ) all I need to do? Am i leaving anything out?
I don't care if it's a full wipe or lose all the data. I was going to do that anyway before setting up as new for my uncle.
Thanks
EDIT: Or is it as simple as just running SuperSU and selecting Full Unroot? It's not that easy, is it?
If you're going to do a full wipe anyway, you might as well just flash it back to stock with RSD Lite since that will also get rid of root.

But will the way that I posted work too? Or would simply using the SuperSU remove root work too? Don't want to just start pressing buttons and end up worse off.
