If you want to install a ROM you have to first download the correct ROM for whatever phone you have and put it where you won't forget it. Then you need to go into recovery mode and do a factory data reset then wipe your cache and last you need to wipe your dalvik cache which is found in the advanced options. Then you click install zip and the you find the ROM and install it. If it has the aroma installer just follow the instructions given. After that just restart your phone. The first time you boot up your phone takes a minute so don't get worried.

Alternatively, aren't there stickies galore in the Development sections with walkthroughs on the process of rooting / flashing custom ROMs / custom recoveries?

I agree... With all the different updates (e.g. vrblk3, vrbmb1, etc.), kernels, mods, etc., it's best to go to Development and read the OP. One thing I didn't see in the OP was having an unlocked bootloader... Very important!!!
This noob just flashed his first Rom a couple days ago. I have been on here trying to learn all I can.
a guide to newbie?

This is my first post on this forum and I would like to start off by saying thank you for the developers for their time and work. Every question I have had has been answered in this forum and has allowed me to slowly introduce myself to android being that I am a new user.
With that being said: I have perm-root my Shift and I just flashed my first ROM & I am running MikShift v1.1. I see that there are downloadable MODS for the ROM & I have no idea going about putting them on my phone. If there is a already a thread explaining how to flash MODS, a quick link would be much appreciated. Thanks In Advance
The mods are applied the same way as the ROM itself... By flashing through recovery.
Is it possible to add the MODS through Rom manager, or would I have to manually restore flash them. Not very familiar with recovery flash
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
Just move them all to one folder on your sd card reboot to recovery or power off hold volume down and power then choose recovery, wipe cache and dalvik IF you need to or choose zip from sd card then pick the mod you want and flash it
Sent from my PG06100 using Tapatalk
And yes, you can use rom manger to flash mods just like you would a full rom... but in my opinion you should consider taking this opportunity to familiarize yourself with your recovery, it's pretty nice
So you have your brand new LG G2x and have heard about this rooting and flashing thing but don't know where to begin. When I first got my G2x I had a hard time trying to learn how to root my phone, flash it with CWM and flash a custom ROM onto it.
I couldn't find a thread specifically showing me how to do all of this with the G2x Gingerbread 2.3.3
Well, I have put this thread together to help those out there like myself that were lost. I have gathered all the links with the directions you need to follow to successfully root and flash your phone!
So let's being!
These directions are to flash the ROM Cyanogenmod7 onto your phone. They can also be used to flash any other ROM, just download the rom that you want after doing Step 1 and 2, then follow the directions in Step 4 to flash the ROM.
1) Flash ClockworkMod via NVFlash by following the directions in this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
After flashing your phone with Clockworkmod, make a backup by booting into ClockworkMod recovery mode, then going to backup and restore. In case something were to go wrong, or you want to flash your phone back to stock rom, you will have the backup available.
2) Do this step if you want to keep your stock Gingerbread but want your phone Rooted. If you want to install a custom Rom, you can skip this step since custom Roms are already Rooted. Root your phone by following the directions in the following link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1255214
3) Download the latest nightly build of ROM Cyanogenmod7 here, or download another ROM from the G2x Android Development
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=p999
4) Follow these directions to flash the ROM onto your phone. Make sure to "Wipe Data" in Clockwork Recovery mode before flashing the ROM.
http://theunlockr.com/2011/05/03/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-the-t-mobile-g2x
5) If the ROM you decide to flash doesn't come with the google apps, like Youtube, Market, Maps etc. You can download the .zip for the google apps here. Just flash the .zip from Clockwork Recovery mode.
http://goo-inside.me/gapps/
CM7 comes with AWDLauncher, but if you find the menu a bit laggy, you can try out AWDLauncher EX from the android market.
I take no credit for the work done by these people, I simply put all of the links in one place.
Mods and Admins, if this is in the wrong section please don't ban me
I saw other Guide threads on here so I think this is the correct section to post this in.
great Job!

Look for the first thread its stickyed at the very top it has step by step on how to install custom roms
Sidekick 4G has a unlocked bootloader from stock , go to the ,CWM thread & install CWM and boot into recovery with volume up + down + power and then you could flash your ROM .

Revolution is right be carefull when flashing roms you could brink you phone like i did like i said there is a guide on how to install roms its the very first thread
Read up on Odin first. Download everything you need to Odin first. Be aware that you will probably need to use the Odin recovery to restore your phone... If you spend any amount of time flashing roms, you will eventually need to fix a soft brick.
It's not shocking and it's not a disaster when you soft brick. It's just something that happens once in a while when you start modding your device. Be prepared.
Hey guys,
Finally got around to working on my phone. I have a question. I've been following this guide here to the letter. But I skipped step 1 as I thought rooting was only for 2.2 Froyo G2x owners as mine's already been updated to 2.3. Do I still need to root it to flash CWM while I'm logged into my phone??
Thanks in advance!!
If flashing cwm via nvflash doesn't work then you'll need to root first, it's been quite some time since I last did this, but I'm pretty sure all you need to do is flash cwm using nvflash and then install the rom of your choice

Followed the guide here and flashed the root file.
One last question. Can I install roms and kernels from rom manager, or do i do both from cwm?

I honestly never tried to install roms, or kernels, from rom manager, I think you need to buy the premium app to be able to do so. Either way, it's always safer to flash from cwm since you can wipe everything you need to from there (ie. cache, dalvik cache, system, and data) which is very important when flahing different roms, and kernels

Just to reiterate, on this particular phone it's not the best idea to flash with rom manager at all. Always go with cwm.

Super One Click has been updated with a new exploit that can root the G2X Gingerbread without flashing CWM Recovery. Get the new version of Super One Click and root it that way. Or flash CWM Recovery and then flash my root zip.

ICS for G2x is a work in progress. I believe CM team is working on it.
Hey there everyone,
I decided to make a new topic since my other thread had a way other issue. I want to have a custom rom of AOKP on my HTC one x. I've downloaded the file, installed CWM etc. Now my question is what Gapps do I need? Is it rom specific? I know that AOKP runs on android 4.2.2.
Do I need CyanogenMod 10.1.x 4.2.2 Gapps?

Most roms will have a link to the proper Gapps package within OP but yes, if it's a 4.2.2 rom, the cm 4.2.2 gapps should work fine.

I believe you do if you flash the wrong version of GAPPS it can boot loop you.

Ah yes, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2052610 This first linked me to an enormous site with alot of Gapps which confused me. But once I scrolled down to check I could still find the Gapps that were reccomended for that build.
Excuse me for my impatience Carry on!
How do I perform a FULL wipe though?

Reboot into recovery, do a factory reset, wipe /system/, and (optional) wipe the sdcard. Just remember that if you wipe the sdcard you will be wiping the zip files you were going to flash. So, you might want to do that part AFTER installing the Rom and gapps.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
A Full wipe consists of wiping: Cache, dalvik cache, system and factory reset in recovery.
TWRP 2.4+ seems to have issues wiping so if you get error messages or bootloops after doing a full wipe and flashing a new ROM, this could be why. TWRP version of choice is 2.3.3.1
Installing the wrong GAPPS will typically create Force closes when you boot up or try to launch and apps within GAPPS. I've never seen flashing the wrong gapps cause bootloops.
Shiizzzzzz, I flash every gapp package under the sun for every aosp Rom there is for the XL lol... My favorites are midnight gapps... Worked perfect on all roms.

I keep seeing advice like this on the boards, but doesn't the factory reset wipe both /data and /cache? I honestly want to know so I don't give people bad advice.
Regardless, good call on the twrp version.

Yes but redundancy never hurt anyone. Also, when you take into account the issues with both cwm and twrp across multiple devices, it's best to be overly cautious than not cautious enough. Sometimes I wipe it all twice just to ease my mind. If you read on Tweamwin's site, they also say that most ROM installs wipe the system partition so you should never have to wipe it, but I think we all know that's BS.
TWRP, CWM, ROMS, MODS, these are all developed by random people I don't know, who also have no part in the original manufacture/design of my device. Better to be safe than sorry, I always say.
Fair enough. I guess when you are dealing with stuff that could seriously mess up an expensive device a little caution can't hurt.

I agree 100%
I always do double wipes of everything before flashing something. And I wipe cache/dalvik after the flash too. I expect that's the reason I never have issues after booting my phone up.
