So the new Facebook messenger comes with chat heads and I really like the idea of it. I was wondering if anyone knew of a strictly SMS texting app that is similar in that it allows me to reply AND VIEW my messages on top of any other app? pop up reply is cool from certain apps but I like that I can view my messages with chat heads. thanks!

Thanks for the tip! Does it use a lot of data if i just use it for SMS? And i'm looking into Ninja sms now
So ninja SMS is cool but I like chatheads in that I can actually view a convo whenever I want (not just when I receive the message). like I want a tab or something to always be visible

Ya I saw that to! I emailed the developer about that, and a few other glitches I found in the 5 minutes I had it running. I can see it going far in the app world, but there are some items that need to be addressed.

I love the idea but I'm still wanting a tab or something to ALWAYS be showing in any app, ya know? so I can view (or create) messages anywhere without leaving my current app
I would love to have only the popout function (like on FB-messenger) but on my stock SMS-app.
I really like the stock-feeling and honestly, Facebook really succeded with their popout. Sleek, good looking, smooth and functional.
Wish there were some kind of extension
Wish it would work with whatsapp too

You have to disable notifications on the one you don't want to see notifications from. This is not the best explanation, but it's as if your messages get sent to one location where any message app can read them. Essentially, both apps are still looking for notifications, therefore, notifying you twice.

Wow, i see what you mean. That does suck. I was responding to this but decided to test for myself.
I've been using Go SMS since I got the phone last tuesday and I never had the issue. I installed Handcent and tested (now I have stock, go SMS and handcent). The very first message I sent to myself from my wife's phone I got double messages as you experienced. I sent myself five more and I did not received any more doubles. Not sure what it is, but this was the first and hopefully last time I'll see this.
Did you uninstall all the third party messaging apps and test to see if the issue goes away?

Thank you for you opinion, The reason messages from us have their pic is because I feel that it is the best way to know who the message is to, if it is right align'd then you know we(you) sent it. Do you have an idea that would improve showing who it was too + that it was from us? I am happy to take on any ideas and changes.

Change the colour of the messages Grey or white for them and blue or green for us. Like iMessage or textplus.

how about a simple " f " ?
like anydash, but i think you have to design it yourself tho
just get the idea from there i guess?
Any chance of getting Facebook Messenger support? On my phone I use Messenger more than the actual Facebook app.
I rather like this notification setup. I like the new version. Great job with this.
Only wish it could go straight to the notification I'm clicking (if it's a single notification) rather than just to the Facebook App.
But no real complaints. It's great!
Sorry if this was discussed but I think I just went through the last hundred threads on here, and when I 'search' for hangouts it gives me zero results
So onto my question; am I the only one mad and annoyed that there is no dedicated text messaging app? The only way to text someone new is to go to people> scroll to prison> click their name> click the text message icon....? Really?
Because when clicking the '+' button in 'hangouts' it only opens a new "hangout", and as I learned yesterday hangout and sms isn't the same, after someone texted me back saying "did you just send me something? "..
Why do they have to make such a simple a decades old thing so complicated and dumb?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
You're doing it wrong...
Press the + in hangouts. Start typing a name, number, etc. Matches will drop down and choose the one that has the SMS icon.

Moving SMS/MMS app from AOSP 4.3 is the best way, I guess
I don't find it complicated at all in fact it pretty simple.
I don't need to go to people app to text someone new, I can do it straight from hangouts. I just click the "+" and then pick my contact and right from that screen without any extra steps i can select either SMS or hangout as the new conversation type.

Replace Hangouts with 8sms which looks like the good, old SMS app from AOSP:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thinkleft.eightyeightsms.mms
Don't forget to define 8sms as "default sms app" in settings and you're done. For me, this is much better than using Hangouts...

all you need to do is open hangouts, click the + button, then if you want to call Phil, type PHIL.
you'll see phil's mobile number, his work number, his home number, and you'll see his hangout email address.
click on the one you want to send him a message through....... that's it........ that's not too hard.
Thanks guys that's a lot better, I even hate the hangouts icon looks more like a iPhone icon than a text.

I personally prefer chomp sms (they're working on updating it for 4.4) but their other texting app, textra has been updated and I'm liking it quite a lot actually.
Give it a try. It doesn't have the most customizations but probably more than 8sms. It's not bloated like go sms or handcent

Yeah I agree with you. I don't like how it defaults to using chat instead of texting. A lot of people at work have iphones, so I need to actually text them, not use hangouts. It isn't too big of a deal, but it takes an extra step to select "SMS" instead of in 4.3, just typing their name.
Since we now have the option to pick in 4.4, what's your favorite messaging app? I've been using Ninja SMS. I prefer a Holo interface, and the chat heads mean I never have to look at the interface itself anyways.

For this reason my favorite is the 8sms https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thinkleft.eightyeightsms.mms. Looks like the stock 4.3 sms app, but have more options.

In sorry but you have always been able to pick whatever you want and it would work without issue. All you had to do is turn off notifications in the stock messaging app which wasn't any harder than what you need to do now. What you didn't have to do was set your shiny new messing app as default because the operating system did it for you. If you installed multiple messaging apps like handcent and chomp it would then give the option to set one as default and you could go into the main settings/applications and remove that default just like any other application installs such as launchers or galleries where more than one app could be called to perform an action.

See above. Assuming all the various messaging apps get tuned up to work on 4.4 you will have exactly the same options you had on 4.3, no more no less. There is no now you can pick.
