Hey guys, I'm having a problem rooting my GS3. I believe the problem is in unlocking the bootloader. I've watched a few of the video tutorials and go thru the proceedure to unlock, flash recovery and root the phone using ODIN 3.07. Everything runs smoothly with no apparent errors. But when I boot into recovery and flash a custom ROM, I get the infamous yellow triangle and a message telling me the software is not authorized by verizon and I need to return the phone to a verizon store. I'm able to get out of the softbrick using ODIN to flash a stock ROM again but I can't figure out what's going on and why I can't get the bootloader unlocked. Is there a utility to tell if the bootloader is unlocked or another way to check? At least on that doesn't involve softbricking the device. BTW, the phone is on the latest 4.1.2 jellybean update. Let me know if you guys need any other specific info on the phone and I'll post it. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!
What image are you flashing to root your phone? Most of them don't include the unlocked boot loader (they only root). If you're stock, rooted, the easiest way to unlock the bootloader is to download the ez unlock app from the play store (make sure it's for verizon gs3)
I can't remember the files off the top of my head but I'll look into them and re post when I get them.
So if I understood your post correctly, I should be able to root my phone like I've been doing and then download the app you mentioned to unlock the bootloader. Correct?
Basically. what I did was root, then bootloader, then custom recovery (I'm still on 4.1.1).Though I found the image that had the unlocked bootloader already included if you have 4.1.1 or 4.1.2.

Be sure to read directions, check your md5's before flashing, and only flash Odin files in the pda slot.
If you followed that guide above before and it didn't work, just try to unlock the bootloader with the app instead.
Hmm.....still no luck. Also, I'm not sure what app to download to unlock the bootloader.
Here's a link to the video I followed. I used the files mentioned in it and the links to them on the site. As far as I can tell, it all looks good.

I believe this is the app to unlock bootloader
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mmmeff.ez.unlock
did the bootloader unlock app get pulled from the play store? I just searched and couldn't find it.
Here's the original thread by the dev with download links. Not sure if the links are still active though...

Here's a little more info: I ran rootchecker and it came back that I had root access granted and busybox installed. Under build info it list the bootloader as I535VRALEC. Under fingerprint it says: 4.1.2/JZO54K/I535VRBMA2. Is it OK that these two don't match?
Yes it's fine. Once youre set (rooted, unlocked, custom recovery), you can restore the original boot chain if you want. Don't have to but if you do you can find the files in the thread I linked to in post #4

Does unlocking the bootloader give you root?
And in which instances can you flash a custom recovery or customs ROMs?
Rooting means you can install apps that require root access (like titanium backup or setcpu). Unlocked bootloader means you can load any rom, kernel, etc that you like. Unlocked bootloader is usually acquired after rooting.
I'm not sure I totally understand the first reply, so here is my take on it.
Rooting will let you install apps that require root as already stated, but rooting will let you install custom ROMs and do just about any tweak you want. I finally did unlock my bootloader, but the only benefit I gained was being able to change the flash screen, which is the first screen you see when the phone powers on.
I have read that it's harder to brick your phone with a s=off bootloader too.
It is not harder to brick your phone with an unlocked bootloader, just easier to recover from a soft-brick. An unlocked bootloader will allow you to flash using fastboot. So in the case of a corrupt recovery, or something along those lines, you are able to flash it using your computer. It basically allows you to flash different parts of an image separately.

That's pretty much what I meant, I just didn't say it right. Thanks for clearing it up.
How to find my phones' bootloader is locked or not? Because i already flashed different custom ROMs and using it.

Cjey
If you are rooted with a custom recovery, your bootloader is unlocked.

Hello, i am trying to unlock, root my chacha like 2 weeks. I have the latest rom and therefore i can't unlock my phone via HTCDev Unlock. I've even contacted with HTCDev and they said they don't support rooting procedure. My Device can gain Temp root (accoridng to the programs) but programs can not push busybox to the system. it says "Out of memory" but i have like 110mb available. I formatted SD to ex2 and ext 3 no chance.. i noticed that many people in the forums facing the same problem as mine. And i think that this is the time to start a topic about it. Any Fixes about this issue?

He didn't even got his bootloader unlocked, how on earth will he flash cwm?
Besides that. Try, to be sure with another email-adress, to ask your question again at HTCdev... but, don't tell them you want to root your device... Than, they'll probably help you out... Or google a way tyo downgrade to an older firmware, which allows you to unlock it.
Are you sure you followed the provided steps correctly? I'd say you check it. I was able to unlock the bootloader without any problems.
I used to face the same issue.
Just ignore Update to Latest firmware part, and Continue unlocking your bootloader .
Just Make sure your HBOOT is 1.0 or more.
Hello,
I'm trying to install TWRP on my wife's TFT300T. Its lagging and freezing bloat apps hasn't helped. It's rooted stock 4.2 with a locked boot.
I rooted it with motochopper, and tried installing the latest 4.2 (2.6) with the terminal method and it didn't seem to work. I get an error when trying to access the recovery menu. I tried using adb/sdk, but I don't see the usb option fro fastboot.
I have the latest unlock tool from asus, but I want to be sure I need to unlock the bootloader. I have everything backed up with titanium, but I'd like to get a recovery of the stock too if possible.
If someone could confirm I need to unlock the bootloader that'd be great. It hasn't specially said that I need to unlock the bootloader in any of the 5 or 6 topics I've read. Thanks!

To my knowledge and for a bit of backround the reason the tf300t needs to be unlocked to install twrp is any kernel package you flash needs to be cryptographically signed, the key for this has not and wont be released by Asus, meaning if you try flash twrp without being unlocked, the bootloader looks for a signature on said package but doesn't find one so its not accepted, unlocking the bootloader disables these checks so we can flash what we want.
Short answer
Yes you need to have an unlocked bootloader to flash unsigned kernels
New z3 D6653 factory unlocked need some help here. it's running 5.1.1 build number 23.4.1.A.200. How can I root this? It says my bootloader is locked but carrier is unlocked. Says bootloader unlockable yesAny help, links, or information is greatly appreciated! I work the oilfield and don't have much time to search but will do my best and post findings as I learn to help the next guy.

Follow the process on the linked page above If you don't already have the Android SDK and ADB installed, you'll need to do that, or eventually just install Minimal ADB and Fastboot.
Edit: apparently got ninja'd.
Edit2: ups, apparently I also suck at reading questions - so unless you're looking to unlock your bootloader, just follow robkellie11's link.
You can root without unlocking bootloader Bro, downgrade to 5.0.1 and use kingroot root
I also want to root the z3 5.1.1. Can i restore it back after root and unlocked bootloader so i can still use the warranty?

If you Backup your TA Partition, you can restore the DRM Keys and your bootloader status, there for you should be able to use your warranty IF you're on a stock rom while sending your phone for repairs etc.
You can backup your TA Partition by using THIS
Hi everyone, I hope I am posting this in the correct section, and if not, can an admin move my post to the appropriate place? I am a geek with PC's but mobile is new to me and I would like to root my device which is a Samsung Galaxy J3 (2018) version. I cannot find info here after searching. Here is what I achieved thus far. I downloaded what I think is the firmware file named FirmwareX.Net_J337WVLS2ASC1_J337WOYV2ASC1_PCM_8.0_Full which has my model number SM-J337W and part of build number in the filename. My build number fully is R16NW.J337WVLS2ASC1. The IMEI is 359229091474959.
I downloaded latest odin tool and just about to download TWRP and my model is not in their list and thats where I'm at. Can someone confirm if this is the actual stock firmware rom, and if I am ready to proceed and some steps would be appreciated. I was told by Oneclickroot service that they have a different stock firmware, and just wanted me to pay for something I can probably do on my own, so I'm puzzled by their reply as I had a very hard time finding this firmware which seems to be the closest match. Has anyone here ever rooted this particular device and provide me a sure step by step way to root it? I do have the setting options OEM Unlock and USB Debugging if that helps.

The stock firmware that you downloaded is for your model number but you need to verify that it works with your mobile carrier. If you downloaded the correct firmware for your region and your carrier.
There isn't a TWRP recovery or a known rooting method for your model number. You'll have to try the various universal rooting apps and the various rooting programs for PC and hope of them works.
Or you might can extract the boot.img from the stock firmware that you downloaded then use Magisk on PC to create a modified boot.img then flash that modified boot.img via Odin then reboot the device and install the Magisk root manager app on the device to gain root. If your bootloader is locked, you won't be able to flash the modified boot.img, you'll have to find a method to unlock your bootloader, if one exists for your model number, android version and build number.

Thank you for the reply Droidriven, I thankfully have the option in settings to unlock the bootloader called "OEM Unlock" unlike most other J3's who do not. So basically, you are saying that I can root this device with Magisk with your suggested Magisk method correct? Could you elaborate this method step by step?

I'll explain the "OEM unlock" setting a bit first. The OEM unlock setting does not necessarily unlock your bootloader. On some devices, enabling this setting unlocks bootloader but on most devices it does not actually unlock the bootloader, it only puts the device in a state that the bootloader "can" be unlocked using some form of unlock method after enabling the setting. In these cases, the unlock method would not work without enabling OEM unlock setting before implementing the unlock method.
So, basically, what I'm saying is that even though you have the OEM unlock setting, this does not necessarily mean that your bootloader is unlocked just by toggling this setting, it may still be locked even after toggling the setting. You'll have to verify whether your bootloader is actually unlocked or not. Do some Google searches for:
"Check bootloader status on Samsung devices"
This should give you results to find a method to verify your bootloader status.
Once you have verified that your bootloader is unlocked, you can use the Magisk rooting method. Read the "Boot Image Patching" section in the link below, there are also several other guides all over the internet and videos on YouTube that give instructions on patching your boot.img. As for actually flashing the boot.img, you will be flashing it using Odin. Use 7zip to compress the patched boot.img into a .tar compressed file. When you flash the file using Odin, place .tar file in the AP slot in Odin.
