Gametel review - HTC Sensation

I just bought a Gametel and can confirm it works with a non-Sense Sensation.
Pairing is easy- they provide an app for it, just run the app, click on 'add device, and hold 'start' on the gamepad and the phone should find it.
Buttons are great, although the D-Pad's style initially makes it easy to inadvertently go diagonally when you meant to only go in one direction, but you get used to it. Better than on-screen controls.
It has four buttons and one each for L and R. No analog sticks- I know this is a deal-breaker for some people, but I don't need it, as I mostly play GB/GBA and NES/SNES games.
Size-wise it's a bit reminiscent of the old GBA, specially when you put the phone in the holder. The spring-loaded holder is pretty snug and secure, and I find the clamp presses on the volume buttons. You have to offset the Sensation slightly to avoid this (the app also had an option to turn off the volume rockers when it's paired).
My only beef is there's no battery indicator on the device- you can't tell if it's fully charged or nearing empty (althogh, if paired, your phone will let you know if the Gametel's battery is running low).
Overall, I can recommend it. My suggestion is you go the a B&M store and try it out, as the size may be a factor for people with big hands.

edit to add: I contacted their support team, apparently the red 'charging' LED shuts off when the device is fully charged. It didn't happen the first time I charged it (overnight) but it did the second. *shrugs*

[Q] Brodit Car Kit

I am looking at buying a Brodit Car Kit for my desire. Can anyone give any pros and cons who have actually used one.
I understand I may need a Proclip to suit, and does anyone know the level of charge that the thing delivers. Thanks.
I have an active Brodit Cradle. Not sure what level of charge it provides but its a well made product that was easy to install and with car home, google navigation and winamp running I lost no charge on my journey.
Thanks for that.

Just ordered one now with the appropriate Proclip for my car. Cost £51 inc postage from dsldevelopments. They had both items in stock whereas mobilefun are awaiting stock on the Proclip. Have spent the last 45 mins reading up on this v's the official htc car kit and this wins for me in that it's v highly regarded generally for a variety of phones in terms of it's build, fit and reliability and has a loyal user base unlike cheap alternatives. The official HTC kit has mixed reviews, mainly positive though but it's the sucker design that put me off... where I'm from, if you can clearly see something stuck on top of the dashboard or windscreen...it's a goner! The clip fits on the central console and is much more likely to be missed or seen as as something difficult to remove so more chance of being left alone.
Hopefully my experience will be as good as other users. Just hope it's delivered quick as both items are in stock.
I have been in touch with dsl myself and was going to use them. I may wait to see your findings.

I used dsl they were very good the only thing I can't get the brodit to do is to auto launch Car home when connected. Instead I use a locale work around.

I use Leedroid 2.4.1
The Locale settings I use are when Headphones are connected and Power source (ac/dock/car charger) is connected. (I do this as I always connect my phone to teh brodit and a line in for use with the aux in on my car)
Then the following settings are used
Brightness 100%
Car Dock Mode is Enabled and launched
Media Volume 100%
Screen Timeout Never
Volume 100%
Kit arrived on Friday morning so very quick, using standard delivery.
As for the fitting, the proclip takes seconds. The actual mount is a little fiddly to screw in, I lost one screw so had to buy more doh! Otherwise also easy fit.
It's very sturdy, the phone fits in very well, without any case of course, the swivel is very good and not loose. Fired up maps and navigation, was easy to use and just the right location for me (fitted to central console) Haven't used it for a journey yet, will see when going to work tomorrow but impressed so far.
Note : I'm running CM7 and the car home didn't launch automatically.
How do you set locales?

Oh I see...it's £6+, I'll leave it for now, will see if there is a solution as to why Car Home doesn't launch in CM7
As for the charging, yesterday had navigation running for 50mins approx and the battery which was at 31 went up to 49. However, this morning, didn't have the phone running anything just plugged in to charge at 21, after 70 mins it was at 81 So it's a v good charger.
Usage wise, the phone for navigation was in landscape mode, swivelled very solidly and was easy to use and read.
Only thing to note was because of the position I have it installed in, it obscures view of my rear window heater button but it can still be pressed and slightly obscures the radio display.
I've been using a proclip for almost a year and love it. It was the first accessory I bought (had one previously for my Diamond).
I use it only for keeping my Desire charged as I have Car Home set to auto-launch on bluetooth connect with my car. I'm currently running LeeDrOi 2.4.1 with no problems.

Well it's been a week and can only echo my previous comments that the Brodit kit + proclip are well worth a purchase. Very solid, sturdy and useable. I have RAC Traffic running most of the time which unfortunately doesn't work in landscape mode (will be sending comments!) and also use navigation in landscape mode, the swivel functon is not loose at all and the best part of the whole kit is that the charging is the same as charging on mains, if you were in the car 2 hrs approx. the phone would be fully charged. V pleased with that.
Hope my comments\experience have helped.
I can only concur with all the comments made. This is a sturdy piece of kit that does a great job.

I have the Brodit, with the cigarette lighter plug (there is also a direct connected version). Charge is around 400 m.a. so not bad! Reason to have the cigarette version is that my phone changes more often than my car - created an extra cigarette lighter connector hidden in the console (Citroen C5)
I've got the direct connect version, which is great as well.
It charges the phone at over an amp.
Although a bit tricky to connect the cables, totally worth it

I was just trying to take a picture in the dark yesterday and someone asked me if my phone had a flash on it . If the price is right I might consider getting one.
The inventor is Italian and he needs 26K$ to initiate mass manufacturing.
the price - 25-30$ plus 10$ delivery seems exaggerated, but maybe it can be lowered. I think it's a great idea.
This is the best DIY alternative I have found...
1. Back replacement - Dealextreme 3.9$
2. 10 3.7V LED - eBay - 8.3$
3. 20 Mini push-buttons - eBay - 2.99$
overall
15$ per one device
5.03$ per device for 10 devices
4.88$ per device for 20 devices
plus wires and some solution for the + and - legs out.
EDIT : OK, gave up, just ordered one...
That looks really cool. Do you think it can be controlled by the software, or do you have to physically press the button for the led to turn on?

You have to press the button. There is no path for it be hooked up. Granted with full jtag of the chip, you could probably find a few GPIO that aren't use and use that to trigger a signal to a small timer chip to make it flash, but one it requires fully knowing the GPIO of the chip and how it's used in our phone, and finding pathways from the chip to solder to, and opening your phone and soldering to the board which is very, very, very, very small soldering.
Basically, no. lol. Press the button, and it shines an LED light which lights up a scene slightly.

No, the funding needed is the amount needed to get a company to start making them and make an initial batch. They're not going to make molds and all that stuff for 4 cases.
He has 5 days left with only 1,000 out of his 26,000 dollar goal so it looks like its not happening
I already ordered one, so I still hope to get it (as a gesture to the true supporters).
I think the draw was the price being too high.
Anyway, I liked the idea and I will make one myself if this initiative gets cancelled.
As one of the contributors (donated 30$) I just got this message via mail (also appears in the indiegogo site updates) :
Hi everybody! unfortunately we didn’t reach our goal to start the production of COVERLIGHT, but thanks to all yours feedback and suggestions we understood how to improve this idea… Now we are working to an universal version of coverlight, which is controlled by a camera app… It will be compatible with all the devices, because it’s a “plug and play” device Follow @coverlight1 on twitter or facebook to stay informed about it… Happy New Year!
A "plug and play" flash compatible with all devices huh? That sounds interesting. I'm guessing it would be plugged into the audio jack? I'm glad the idea wasn't abandoned, thanks for the update itz

Im glad the project was not abandoned seams like it has a lot of potential.
I'm having some thoughts about implementing a solution that will include :
1. universal compatibility (for all devices).
2. involve no cover change.
3. include no batteries.
but this leads me to some technical questions I will be glad if our experts can answer :
1. Is it possible to make an app virtual flash machine, that when using any camera app - it will be tricked to think that we actually have a flash led ?
I suppose it is possible...
2. In that case is it possible to get the camera app shooting trigger via the audio jack or power jack ? I suppose it is possible, but yet again, how do you make the hardware recognize this trigger ?
3. Is it possible to consume power from the power jack (usually used to charge the device).
If it is, then we can send the power signal instead of a trigger and that could simplify the hardware needed...
If the answer to all of these is yes - then we can make a simple LED flash, (audio?) power jack cable, possibly direction adjustable cable. it will be light weight, reliable and simple to use and involve no cover swapping.
most of the work will be done by the virtual flash machine app and the device hardware.

This part should be possible with usb otg support
I took apart my powerskin today and I think I can come up with a way to wire a LED in the case and power it from the power skin battery. It's just going to be finding a good suitable LED for it. Obviously no triggering from a camera apps.

A short review of the MW1 with the Xperia Z.

I bought the MW1 last week, and I've had time to play with it, but not to fix the problems I've found, so partly to explain my problems to possible buyers, and partly to get help to fix my problems, I'm writing this review.
First of all, I listened to the headphones that came with the MW1 unit for all of ten minutes. I'm sure they were fine, wonderful and would imbue all music with a magic substance, but I already have a set of Shures, and I don't need them.
Pairing the MW1 with the phone was supposed to be a matter of NFC-touching, but that didn't work. Instead I used the "quick start guide", and it took me about three minutes to set it up once and for all, and it's automatically connected to the phone every time I've switched it on ever since. Basically, you switch it on, and all sound should output through the MW1 instead of from the phone. This is not always true, which I'll come back to.
Sound is fantastic. I can't head any difference between using my Shure through the MW1 and directly to the phone, although I've used my normal music files, which are in AAC ~192kbit VBR, so I'm sure someone with higher standards would find something to complain about. Since 90% of what I listen to is podcasts and audiobooks, we're well past my level already.
Now, the hardware: the unit itself has some pretty obvious faults, which makes it very obvious that this is 1.0 hardware. In fact, I would call it 0.5 hardware. Sony has made some very odd choices, and these are definitely the most important downsides to this unit.
First of all, both the microSD-card and the micro-USB port are inside a lid which looks so much like the lid to a USB-stick that I find myself wondering why they didn't do the obvious thing and simply add a normal USB plug so we could just charge it by sticking it into a computer/USB power adapter, instead of mucking about with a cable. The only thing they would have to move is the microSD-slot, which would fit behind the USB plug just fine.
Second, the power button. If you've seen any reviews about this unit, you'll have heard about the power button. It strikes me that whomever decided that the power button should be of the "hold in for three seconds"-type, be completely impossible to press without half-inch nails, and be located at the WORST POSSIBLE PLACE on the unit, decides ten lashes and a dishonorable discharge from the world of product design.
Now, this is about all there is to say about the actual MW1, but as promised, I'm going to try to talk about how it works with the Xperia Z.
First of all, you must understand that at least 70% of the reason I bought the MW1 in the first place is the lid over the headset-port on the phone. To have to fumble around with my nail to fit into a specific slot out of several completely identical slots around the edges of my phone was COMPLETELY out of the picture. And yes, this solves that problem.
Another problem, however, appears shortly after. I have several applications which play audio, and since I no longer pick up the phone, unlock the screen, (sometimes change application) and THEN press play in the app I want, the phone easily gets confused as to which app is to get the "play" message from the MW1. You'd think perhaps that the Walkman app would be in a default-position just like iTunes is on macs, or Windows Media Player is on Windows, but no - for some reason it just selects completely by random any old running app, and outputs the sound. For me, when pausing Pocketcasts and then pressing play again a few minutes later, it seems to be about 50% chance that Pocketcasts picks up again (which is almost always what I wanted, and ALWAYS what I want to have happen), 25% PowerAmp even though it is never loaded and just installed in case I ever want to play music from my phone at a party or something, and 25% a completely random audio player, including (but certainly not limited to) Smart Audiobook Player, Plex, Winamp, Walkman or ANY other app I have installed on my phone.
So in short: great unit, get it if you can, but if there is ever a version 2.0 of this device and they haven't fixed the power button, please apply for a position with Sony's hardware design group, cause apparently they're useless.
Also, if anyone knows of any way to permanently bind the play button to "whichever app I just paused, you nitwit", let me know.
Also, these units are pretty damn cheap these days, mine was well under 100 USD, and it's well worth it. If you need an extra pair of headphones - fantastic - but even the bluetooth unit itself is worth the price.
Hey, thanks for the short review.
I'm using a Jabra Clipper. Till now it always started the walkman app, and the buttons did what i wanted. but today i had some problems with skipping songs. gotta see if it will reoccure.
the biggest issue i have is the weak signal strength. it's definitly working better than with my old S2, but never the less, the signal is very easy interrupted. Even if the phone is in the pocket of my jeans and i slightly cover it, because my hand is in there too.
I wonder if the MW1 has the same issues.
Not really. I have a Plantronics Voyager something something, and that has horrible distortion issues if I so much as think about putting the phone in the same-side jeans pocket, but the MW1 goes strong even if I'm in another room.
Of course, that could be because the MW1 unit is much larger...
I wonder if this will help: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.harleensahni.android.mbr&hl=no
My Jabra works even in 5m distance, but loses signal as soon as the phone is behind my back.
The MW1 costs twice as much as the clipper.
Nice app, will check it out. Thanks
Hello... I'm thinking in buying the MW1 but I have a question. Currently, I have the JAYS a-JAYS One+ that comes with a microphone.
I think the device of the MW1 has a built in mic so how it would behave if I connect the JAYS to the MW1 since the two have built in microphones? Which one would work to answer calls? The one in the MW1 or the one in the JAYS One+?
Thanks in advance.
The MW1. The microphone on the headphones wouldn't be connected to anything.
Note: I am making an educated guess.

Otherwise, no changes since .253, no. I still use it, though. It's still fantastic, even with having to grab the phone and making adjustments to make Walkan stop playing at the same time as Audible...

About updates: If you have smart connect on ANY android phone..then you can update the Firmware of the headset from the phone (wifi needed). the other way you use MicroSd card (about 300kb .bin file on the root of the MicroSD) or using USB (hold BACK button and plug the usb) and software FLASH the .bin file automatic for you.

Yes, the Headset displays tracknames, caller names, etc. with my Xperia Z. But I had some trouble at first that the headset was not able to skip tracks when the screen was off and the phone locked with the android pin. After the latest update of my Z and the use of sony smart connect it works fine!

Used the headset for about a week with both headset button controller and the new firmware. No change at all, everything in the first post still stands unfortunately.
Still really like the headset, though, despite all that.
I've got a question about the mp3 player... if I pause it and turn it off... will it remember where I was the next time I turn it on.
I'm thinking of listening to audiobooks on it, but then it's very important that it remembers where it was last time when you power on the device.

Pressy working great on note 4

Hi guys as the title says pressy working great on the note 4 its a really cool headphone socket button that can activate most functions on your phone. I pledged on the kickstarter page a while ago but you can buy one online from here http://get.pressybutton.com/
How does it affect battery life?
I found it a complete waste of time and I was one of the early backers. First - it's completely pointless if you use headphones with any regularity. Even if you don't use headphones, it's so inconsistent on action, I basically never used it. Tossed mine in the trash since it was useless.
I will say it had a good clicking action for such a small item.

Using the headphone jack as power? Its not a good idea if you use headphones. You can always just do shortcuts on your screen or change whatever action you want to a long key press with one of the current buttons.
Note 4 is not even listed as being compatible and how does this work with a custom rom?
I use a dirt cheap bought from ebay with keycut. The whole thing works mostly well, but not always. I try to press my device's buttons as less frequently as possible, so I use this button as a home key. It works more or less well and there's no significant battery drain, but it causes several minor annoyances, most importantly problems with a three-button headset. I do not recommend it, unless someone is as picky as me and wants to protect his device's physical buttons as much as possible.
You're better off just buying a Dimple. 2 or 4 buttons that use NFC while keeping your headphone jack open. It's the same price or less compared to this.

Nulaxy KM04 Bluetooth Keyboard

If anyone is looking for a nice, full keyoard with a trackpad I'd highly recommend picking up this keyboard. I already have the folio keyboard case and it works well for basic typing but pissed me off when I wanted to SSH into one of my Linux boxes since it didn't have a lot of the standard keys that I'm used to. The Nulaxy is essentially a full-sized keyboard with a number pad and function keys for Windows, iOS, and Android, which you can switch between at the touch of a button. It also has a switch which allows you to switch between two devices instantly, which is pretty awesome. I currently have it paired with my Pixel C and also with my Nvidia Shield.
The only issues that I have with mine is that my NumLock and CapsLock lights seem to be dead, but the buttons themselves work fine. The company offered to fix any issues I have with it even before I told them, but I don't care enough to send it back since I've quickly grown attached to it. Also the charging/power lights are reversed from the usual color so it tends to be a little confusing at first: when you first power it on (hold the power button for 4 seconds) the power light blinks red 3 or 4 times, which means that it's on, before I read the manual I thought this meant it had a dead battery since most devices blink red when the battery is low/dead. While charging the keyboard (it accepts MicroUSB) the charging light is green no matter what, and it turns off when it's done charging.
Little quirks aside, it's well worth the $35!

I have been looking at this. My wife bought a Logitech K480 for her Pixel C. For mine, I'd like the full size one with the trackpad. One thing I noticed with a cheap bluetooth mouse is that the pointer was choppy and lagged my movements. How well and smoothly does the mouse cursor track your movement on the trackpad?
Sent from my Pixel C using Tapatalk
It works well enough that nothing lags for me on either my Shield TV or my Pixel C, all you have to do is increase the cursor speed because it's painfully slow.
Okay, that's great to hear. I'll order one in the near future. If anything goes wrong with yours please let us know here
