[Q] Root/unroot using OTA Root Keeper on JB 4.1.2 without Exynos Bug - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Galaxy Note 10.1 with JB 4.1.1
This version has the Exynos bug, so I am using the app Exynos Abuse to easily root/unroot the device.
When I root, the Exynos Abuse app installs Super SU and roots the device.
When I un-root, the Exynos Abuse app un-installs Super SU and un-roots the device.
Now, I would like to install the latest 4.1.2 ROM, that (among other things) fixes the exynos bug, which means I will not be able to use the xynos Abuse app.
I am now wondering if the following would achieve the same effect I need:
- I am on 4.1.1 (with exynos bug)
- I root with exynos abuse
- I back up root with ota rootkeeper
- I unroot with exynos abuse
- I unistall exynos abuse
- I upgrade to 4.1.2 (without exynos bug)
- I use ota rootkeeper to root/unroot the device at will
> I restore root with ota root keeper, to use apps that require root (multiwindow manager, titanium backup, etc.)
> I remove root with ota rootkeeper, to use apps that do not want root (sky go and others)
I am asking because I have sort of already tested the above procedure in the following way
- I am on 4.1.1 (with exynos bug)
- I root with exynos abuse
- I back up root with ota rootkeeper
- I unroot with exynos abuse
- I use ota rootkeeper to root/unroot the device at will
and indeed the last step (restore root, un-root using ota rootkeeper) works, but what is strange to me is that when i restore root with ota rootkeeper no Super SU app is installed.
Thanks

well I know but that's what i want to avoid: if I reinstall super su the SkyGo app will not work because it will detect it...
I have tried keeping super su and temporarily removing root with ota root keeper but SkyGo still detects super su and won't run...

That's a whole different thing though.
So even when using Voodo OTA Root helper thing, and hidding it, or Temp unroot, doesn't funtion? have you tried temp unroot with SuperSu?

well, put it this way...
If I have super su and ota rootkeeper and I temporarily unroot with ota rootkeeper, SkyGo does not work
If I have only ota rootkeeper and I temporarily unroot with ota rootkeeper, SkyGo works
You are suggesting to try temporarily unrooting with super su? Is this possible? How?

Well it has an Enable and Disable option

Root TF700 with JB?

Hi, I have not yet upgraded to JellyBean because I do not know if it is possible to only root to the TF700.
Is it possible? You know tell me the procedure?
Thanks
If you are not on JB already and want to root your device, you should root it now, install SuperSU and Voodoo OTA Root Keeper, then run SuperSU, then OTA Root Keeper and save your root, then upgrade to JB, then restore root using OTA Root Kepper.
Thanks for the reply.
I have not yet installed but just downloaded the update.
I already have a root and SuperUser on ICS.
Where can I find vooodo and OTA root keeper? Can you link please?
Excuse my English but I use google translator!

Vodoo OTA Root Keeper.
SuperSU.
SuperSU License.
Remember:
Install SuperSU + Voodoo OTA Root Keeper
Run SuperSU
Run a program needing Root privileges and check that it is SuperSU that is prompting, not SuperUser.
Run Voodoo OTA Root Keeper, then remove backup, then create backup (to make sure the backup is using SuperSU)
Upgrade to JB
If needed: Install SuperSU + Voodoo OTA Root Keeper (depending on your method of upgrading to JB, these may have been uninstalled)
Try to run a program needing Root privileges to see if root survived by itself.
If not, Run Voodoo OTA Root Keeper, restore root
These should be the steps necessary for you to have root survive an upgrade to JB (note: I haven't been able to upgrade to JB myself, so this is just information I have collected from various other sources. Proceed at your own risk...)
Is it possible to make a backup of voodoo root keeper from one tablet which is already root and backup on another one which is stock ?
Thank you again. I must first uninstall superuser?
I am allready on JB is there an method known allready to root it?

Given that you've already updated ... advice to upgrade?
Has improved our TF700?
I was using Superuser (had problems with SuperSU). Made backup with Voodoo OTA root keeper. And no problems after update to JB, have root here

Can I run the procedure directly with SuperUser?
I do not have to force install SuperSU?
I hadn't used my TF700 in a while and when the update came down, I completely forgot it was even rooted and went ahead with the JB update. Sadly, and of course, I lost root. It wasn't one of my smarter moments. Any known way of getting root on JB thus far? I know the unlock tool still works for JB.
Well, I made a recovery for JB, grab the recovery, and install the SuperSU.zip, that seemed to work well for me, so give it a try.
For me worked with Superuser, did not installed SuperSU.
Rooted the ICS, installed Superuser, updated su binary from Superuser. Installed Voodoo OTA Root Keeper and made backup. Installed JB and restored su from Voodoo OTA Root Keeper.
BTW I did not unroot or did something before updating to Jelly Bean. Just enabled all bloatware from Asus that were disabled in Apps.

Don't know. But if the program solves your problem, it is a small price to pay. Support the developers...

In Superuser settings you will see the version of the su binary. Tap on it and update window will popup. You will be able to update your su binary.
I've run the voodoo with superuser and made me up.
Can you tell me where I find the backup it so well on the SD when formatting the internal memory?
OK, I made the vodooo.
Now I'm upgrading to Jellybean.
After how do I restore the backup of Voodoo?

Assuming you manage to get JB installed (I haven't :crying, then it most likely will still be rooted when you reboot. Try running Voodoo OTA Root Keeper after boot and see if you have Root privileges (are there 'X' in all items)? If not, you should have an option to restore root.

Root access

Hello
Yesterday I get the update for Jelly Bean and before I installed it and saved root with OTA Rootkeeper.
Restoring root after update works fine.
Now I have see that every new app i installed get no root access from superuser, so I un installed superuser and installed it again.....
Now I can't get for any app superuser rights.....
Anyone got a idea what I can do?
Thanks!

You don't have root anymore, if you have an unlocked bootloader, there are 2 methods to get root back. If you have a locked bootloader, you are out of luck, just have to wait for new method for JB from dev.
No I got a locked bootloader.... :screwy:
But why all apps with root worked after update JB, only new apps didn't work?

If you download "root checker" from the play store, it will tell you if you have root or not.(for real). After the JB upgrade, you lose root, but some of your apps still inherit root access from previous permission. But if you uninstall them and reinstall them, they will lose root too.

[Q] What it takes to unroot?

Hey guys,
Last time, I asked you about some technical details of rooting.
Now, I have some little questions about unrooting
Lets say I have rooted my device with CF-Auto-Root (which is great by the way...)
so now I have SuperSu and the su binary in /system/xbin, stock ROM and recovery, and unlocked bootloader.
Now I wish to unroot without loosing any data.
1. If I manually delete su, does it enough to say I have unrooted my phone? Or any other actions are required?
2. What does the unroot option in SuperSu actually do?
3. If I flash stock recovery (even though I already have it), will it unroot my device?
4. How does the survival mode of SuperSu keep me rooted in case of OTA update?
Thanks,
Casteel.

1. If you remove the binary, you are essentially unrooted.
2. The unroot option does the same thing as above.
3. Flashing stock recovery alone, will not remove root permissions.
4. I'm not certain on the technical aspects of Survival mode, but I believe, it runs a script after the OTA to retain root.

Cool. Thanks.
Why flashing stock recovery won't remove root, but OTA update will?
What's the difference between these processes?

The reason why is because recovery is on a separate partition. It does not effect anything on /system/ where the su binary lies.
OTA's patch and update files on /system/ causing SU to be removed in most cases. In some cases having root may cause the OTA to fail, requiring removal of the binary before continuing with the OTA.

Great, thank you very much :good:
And thanks for referring to the links, looks useful indeed.
Deleting SuperSU or unrooting will prevent apps from gaining root access, but it won't return your phone to stock. The only way to return to stock is to reflash the factory image.

Installed stock rom but Motochopper said root already exists...

As I mentioned, I rooted my tf700t and installed stock non-rooted 4.2.1 JB rom from Asus' site. But now I need to root the device again. I tried to do this with Motochopper but it said that root is already exists in my device.
How can I handle with this ?
Thank you from now for all response.

Motochopper can't root the latest .10 update. I think you can go to .8, root with motochopper and then use voodoo ota rootkeeper to keep root via ota update.

sbdags meant the 10.6.1.14.10 firmware. Motochopper only worked up to 10.6.1.14.8.
One way to get root on .10 is to downgrade to .8, root with Motochopper, use Voodoo Rootkeeper to backup your root and then let the tablet upate to the latest .10 firmware by accepting the OTA update from Asus (which you should get by checking for system updates from Settings), then restore root with Voodoo Rootkeeper.
A little easier is to use Kingo Android Root. It will root the .10 firmware, but it only works on Windows I think.

[Q] Will I keep root after OTA?

I just got my Shield Tablet and rooted it. I keep getting two OTA notifications, one says ROM Update the other says Tegra Update. Will I keep root of I do the OTA updates?
I'd like to get a recovery added, but it seems that all the recoveries are incomplete. Is there a method to install recovery without a separate computer?

You can try the paid version of SuperSU to preserve root or the THT Rootkeeper (the other big root keeper doesn't work past 4.2) If you update the device to the official OTA, you will need a PC to reflash the recovery but you will not need to unlock the bootloader again.
