Why is the kevlar back starting to look ugly? - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've only had my RAZR maxx HD for 15 hours and when I just looked at the kevlar back it looked ugly, sorta deformed and smudged. Why does it look like that and is it permanent. Also I don't currently have a case for it yet.

It collects oil just like the screen. Take a cotton ball and put a small amount of isopropyl alcohol on it and wipe down the phone. This will remove any dirt or oil on it, and then use a micro fiber cloth to remove excess alcohol. Thats how I clean my phone, works great.

[Q] Screen Cleaning

How do you guys clean your screens? I've been using a scotchbrite cloth which seems to take a lot of scrubs to get all the nasty grease from the screen which makes it all shiny. What's your method?
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
I use a generic pop-up wipe (round plastic can with a pop-top lid) for LCD/Plasma screens. I've used 1/3 of it already in the 1 week I've owned the TF.
Here's a sample (not the exact brand):
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0..._m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=11KFSSP43AC0P6X3HPHF
Make sure the one you get does not have harsh abrasives such as alcohol or ammonia. Many screens have a protective layer that may be damaged by it, though I'm not sure if the TF has this layer.
I have a small squirt bottle, adjusted to mist. Filled with 30% isopropyl alcohol and the rest water. Spray a mist on a soft cloth ( I have some microfiber cloths), not on the screen. Clean with the wet side and dry with the dry side of the cloth.
If there's a lot of pizza on the screen it might take a second cleaning.
+1 for the micro fiber cloth. Also a very light application of rain-x helps keep fingerprints down.
For daily cleaning, I use these:
Targus CleanVu Cleaning Pads
I keep one at my desk at work, and the other two at home. Kinda expensive I guess, but I had a gift card Every few days, when the smudges are out of hand and too much for a simple wipe down, I use an eyeglass cleaning kit with the spray and cloth.
I'd be careful using the alcohol solution. Might not be good for the coating on the TF's screen.
I'll probably use the solution and microfiber cloth that came w/ my eyeglasses (which is alcohol-free, I believe).
I'd also be careful using a spray bottle. If some of the fluids enter the ports, it may cause issues or the fluid can seep down through the edges and get under the glass.
Use a mixture of 10% Vinegar to water and dampen a microfibre cloth with it, gently rub in a circular motion. Use a dry bit of the cloth to dry it. Once you try the Vinegar/water you'll never want to buy screen cleaning liquid ever again. Also great on monitors and LCD TV's etc.

A mild soap (detergent) and water solution is probable the best as it will not attack the plastic. But an alcohol-based solution is most likely more efficient for a quick clean. I always keep PC cleaning wipes and a microfiber cloth in my netbook bag.
I've been using some muc-off spray and their microfibre cloth.
Very pleased with the cloth and it's large enough to cover the screen when I put the TF away in it's case. The spray is pretty good as well but probably a bit over priced for what it is.
Standard microfiber cloth that came with my HP Laptop for cleaning. I don't spray anything. If I need to get some kind of gunk off, I just dampen a tissue and get the gunk, then wipe with the microfiber.
It is a tough screen to clean. My iPad and my Android phone (Fascinate) I can just wipe them with a microfiber and the prints fall off. With the TF I really have to rub and they still linger.
I use Vizio's vcp100. It's an all around cleaning solution for lcd tv's, monitor, etc.
It comes with micro fiber cloth. I don't spray it directly. I spray a little bit of foam to the cloth.
Microfiber cloth +1
Those CleanVu pads from Targus are pretty awesome.
Got a pack, keep one in my briefcase, one at home, and my wife has the other.
Just using a microfibre cloth I picked up in Sainsburys for @£1.75p, works a treat no cleaning liquids needed.
I rain-x'ed the screen, so every time i wash my hands for whatever reason (i do so alot) I just take the tablet with me then flick the screen with my wet hands, and then use a microfiber cloth and wipe in circles.
On my phones though i have some small spritz bottles with 50/50 water/rubbing alch in it and a microfiber.
spray bottle with 40% isopropyl and 60% water.
use a microfiber cloth. Walmart sells em for $5 for 8 in the automotive section.
enjoy.
Rain-X wipes and microfiber cloth is working well here.

Hey guys. I'd like to chime in here...the best solution I have used for lcd screens is one that's homemade. I take a couple drops of mild soap, yes just regular hand soap e.g. dial, dove... but has to be mild. Then only like two tablespoons of rubbing alcohol. 5% is too much! Lcd screens do NOT like alcohol! It leaves a dry streaky residue. Its also just bad for the screen, even if you get all the streaks out. Google it. And then of course just regular water. This is for approx 20 ounces. It has never let me down! I actually got this recipe from doing a search years back. Not sure where? Might have been a magazine or something? You can google for lcd screen solutions, and you can read why alcohol is bad. Just my 2 cents!

Oleophobic coating DIY

As some of fellow SXZ owners I have removed both front and back factory antishatter films as they were dust and scratch magnets. I was enjoying the improved clarity of the screen and premium look of the phone, but the only thing I was missing was the oleophobic coating. Well, I have ordered GLAS.t Slim, but it it will take some time to arrive, so I decided to experiment. While in the supermarket, I just sprayed a coat of some random nanotech spray car wax on the screen and buffed it with a microfiber cloth. Also I have cleaned the screen first with some glass cleaner. Well, guess what. I now have an oleophobic coating on my naked SXZ! Finger glides perfectly on the screen, prints are very easy to wipe even on jeans and smudges don't appear as easy. So I would suggest the following procedure to get a fully working durable oleophobic coating on our SXZs:
1. Use a good glass cleaner spray to thoroughly clean the screen
2. Spray a coat of nanotech car wax (comes in a spray bottle and advertises a protective coating), buff with a microfiber cloth while it's wet. Repeat 3-5 times.
3. Enjoy!
Will have yet to figure the best car wax brand for the purpose of creating a lasting and durable oleophobic coating, but for now this random stuff works wonders. Will probably buy a bottle next time I'm in the store. Will use it on my car too. It's like $3 smth.
Please post what had worked best for you.
Oh, and DISCLAIMER: I will not be held responsible for any damages you do to your phone while trying this suggested method. Proceed with caution AT YOUR OWN RISK!
Glad to see a post about this!
Today I got some turtle wax Ice liquid polish - same results as you, screen is super, super smooth - and no fingerprints. It's like having an oleophobic coating applied.
I'm impressed. I was going to get a glas.t - but now I'm not so sure I need it.
The front glass is dragontrail - not exactly easy to scratch / smash.
Aha! As a car geek I have TONS of this stuff in the garage! Going to give it a try later.
I will, however, try it on top of the screen protector - no amount of spray wax will stop scratches.
Good luck trying to scratch dragon trail or gorilla glass unless you're really trying to!

Two questions about this:
- did you protect the mic/loudspeaker holes while applying it?
- does your phone feels slippery now, for instance when you trying to get it out of your pocket?
Thanks

No and No. I didn't spray it all over, though. Just the center of the screen. So I guess you should use caution.

It's very easy to scratch Gorilla Glass mate... what it takes is a single grain of sand in your pocket, you won't even know you scratched it. It's not that scratch resistant...

Only applied the wax to the screen. It makes such a difference.
Hi guys, thanks for the tip! Can you post a link or photo of an example of the spray you used for this purpose? :good:
Turtle wax ice window cleaning liquid with water repelling effect works great for me. Screen is smooth and slippery. The prints do catch, but seems to come off much easier.
The overall feel is pretty much the same as my htc one x's factory oleophobic coating, but maybe slightly better.
the biggest pro for this one is that it does not need any preps - just spray some on a microfiber cloth, spread on the screen and wipe with another dry microfiber. Profit.

Anyway, test whatever you use in the bottom of the phone first, just in case...
Also check the wax doesn't have an abrasive agent...

Seeing as how you already removed the shatterproof film, can you post pictures of how raised the Glas.T slim is from the edge of the Xperia Z?
I want to order the Glas.T, but chipping issues want me to stray away... If removing the shatterproof film makes the Glas.T flush with the edge, I think it might help prevent chips which would be awesome!

Screen protectors

So what's the go with screen protectors, guys? I've had a #m Vikuiti protector on my XT925 since new. It has never quite fit properly due to the edges of the screen tapering away. The surface of the screen protector is starting to deteriorate and my pattern unlock code is now obvious.
So what are we all using? I've used InvisibleShield on different phones before but never on a touch screen. I've always wondered how the thickish, tacky finish would go on a touch screen.
Any other options?
cheers

Been using the screen protector that was included in the "vanity kit" with the incipio feather case. I have used countless numbers of screen protectors and I have to be honest. This one was a breeze to apply. I have also removed it two times, washed it with dawn dish soap, and reapplied it with ease. I had to take mine off because I didn't get it quite centered due to the tapered edge. I'd be curious to see what an invisible shield would look like.
They have the incipio feather in grey on ebay for under 9 shipped.
You can barely tell the ghost armor is on there. And they have kiosks inside of malls where they install it with a 7 day free re do if it messes up. Though I've never had that issue. And if you get the full body they make colored carbon fiber which you can change colors any time for a 10 labor fee.

Depends on what you like. Clear or matte is just for the back and sides though. The front is only clear. I got the matte on my iPhone back in the day because I liked that look. Now I have green carbon fiber though.

I use a Zagg HD screen protector and switch between my Otterbox Defender and my Otterbox Commuter case.
Thanks for the replies, guys. I'll check out Ghost Armour. How does it go on the edges of the screen? Does it extend right to edge of the glass, over the slightly angled edge of the screen? Or does it stop before the glass anges away?
Cheers

I just got the Zagg HD installed today. Not sure how I like it so far. I'd rather it cover the entire glass, but we'll see how it holds up. It covers more than the Incipio one that came with my feather case so that's a plus, though I was kind of hoping that I could find ghost armor but apparently no retailer sells it in my area. Oh well.
It does look good though. The guy who installed it did it perfectly. The only way I'd ever be able to tell it is there is because you can see where it ends where the screen tapers off. We'll see how this one holds up, and if I don't like it I guess I can always order the ghost armor one online.

eBay, I buy mine for about $1.00 each.
They are multi-layer and cut right before the edge rolls off.
Look around. If you are paying more than $2.00 each, then you are paying too much.
Not sure what the point of getting a screen protector with the RAZR HD is. The Gorilla Glass and whatever coating they gave it seem remarkably effective. I've had mine since November 2012 and have 1 miniscule scratch, and I keep it in my pocket or backpack all the time. It's not for lack of dropping it either - the edge of the case has plenty of dings and dents in it. Also, the anti-grease coating seems far, far better at shedding skin grease or dirt than any screen protector I've ever seen. One quick wipe on my jeans and the screen is clear.

I use to feel the same way with my DroidX, and then one day I had a 2" scratch in my screen after almost 2 years of pretty much nothing. I like the feel of no screen protector way better. My wife and I both had some Halo brand on out XT926's since we got them in Jan of this year. They fit good and I they have a good feel to them and didn't seem to distort the screen. Downside is they are both scratched up now and need to be replaced. My buddy has some kind of armor one and it feels like rubber and I hate it.
I got the Fosmon brand for my TF300 and those had the rubber feel to them and I junked them all, couldn't use it for more than 15 minutes before I wanted to toss my TF300. Cannot speak to longevity with those!

How NOT to Install a Glass Screen Protector

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2FEdzsSuqY
This has got to be the worst most perfectly applied glass screen protector install I've ever seen. I have to give it to the guy for not giving up. And now I know if I ever mess up badly, there is always a way to fix it
And the combination he is using looks really protective. Wonder if it would work out the same way with the defender.
With the Spigen glass protector, it's best to remove it immediately if you find that there is a fault. Once the adhesive has set, it makes removing it really difficult.

I guess the guy missed this bit on the Amazon product page (original emphasis):
When installing iloome ScreenMate products, please make sure the installation area is completely free of dust and lint, as removing the advesive film, or sticky side, may result in small pieces of lint adhering to the glass. In case lint and dust gets on the adhesive, you may carefully remove it by CAREFULLY using a small piece of tape.

Cleaning the Nexus

How do you clean your Nexus? I mean physically clean your Nexus.
I usually go with a microfiber cloth humidified with some water and for the screen is ok, but for the back I can't manage to clean a fingerprint (that damn thing is driving me crazy it's like it's stamped on the back cover)
Any suggestion?
I put a case on mine because I really doubt I'd ever be able to clean anything off the white back. I just take it out of the case and wipe the screen protector off with a damp cloth and call it a day

I've got a slim case on but for phone/tablet screens I use Bausch&Lomb Sight Savers. Which are little wet wipes for glass and plastic lens, my work has them everywhere but they work awesome.
What I do is every time I wash my hands the paper towel I use to dry my hands I wipe down my phone with. Front and back. No fingerprints and doesn't damage phone since paper towel is only slightly wet. Done this with all my phones. Its become a habit now.

I use the cloth from my sunglasses case
Just clean it like any other electronic device encapsulated in plastic: no aggressive detergents, moderate use of moisture, use a soft cloth.
Microfiber cloth and spray (for eye glasses)!
silk cloth
At work we have Ricoh Multifunctionals (printer/scanner).
Each printer has a small silk cloth so you can clean the glass plate (scan surface).
I'm using this cloth to clean my whole N5 with it; front and back.
It removes al dirt and fingers (also on the back) without any problem.
No need to wet it.
And my jeans or shirt work very well also, but not as good as the silk cloth.
