Am I hard bricked? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I have a black HTC screen with a ! triangle in each corner. Tried to ruu and it failed and I have no clue what to do now. I've never seen this before so I'm lost. . .
I was running carbon rom and was having some bad random reboot problems. I wiped and tried to flash venom and it kept rebooting. So I locked it and tried to ruu, and it failed horribly.
I should also add that I am soff.

Have you tried to get back into boot loader manually? Press and hold volume down and power at the same time. When lights stop flashing, release power while continuing to hold volume down until you enter boot loader.
You can try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1982442

You have what is called a radio brick. I don't know of any method to fix it unless you can get another ruu to flash or search around for a method to repair it.

First off, you are not bricked in any sense of the word. On this device, if the screen comes on at all, you are not bricked, and you can recover from it. It just takes the proper steps.
RUU should have given an error code (like "ERROR 170"). Telling what code comes up might help.
You might just try to download the RUU again.
Or you can try to re-unlock the bootloader and flash custom recovery via adb. If that works, just load a custom ROM zip (by way of mount USB in recovery) and flash it.

Is that what the HTC screen with the red triangle with exclamation mark in each corner symbolizes? This screen is new to me.
I'm only familiar with the screen that had the big red triangle and exclamation in the middle of the screen, which is stock recovery.

I wish someone would put that you don't need to relock bootloader to RUU if you are S-OFF in the stickies somewhere.

Unfortunately, yes. The triangles in each corner with exclamation points are for radio brick. He damaged the partition in some way. Like you said, he may be able to flash over it but depends on the damage. If not it will be jewel or JTAG time.

Maybe something went awry while the RUU was trying to write to the radio partition?

He should be able to just reflash a new radio.
I suspect the initial problem was trying to run a Sense rom (Venom) on top of the AOSP kernel from Carbon.

Very possible. Bad ruu or didn't flash properly. Maybe op can let us know how reflashing turns out or if the jewel kit works. And like stated above, sense and aosp radio partitions are different. Being hung up on an asop ROM while flashing a sense ruu can not be good.

AOSP radio is part of the Rom. Sense radio partitions are not even touched by an aosp Rom. You can flash a sense radio while on aosp and have no effect. I don't know if hboot has issues with a borked radio partition though.

I don't know about that. I have never flashed a ruu not compatible with the rom I am using. Hopefully reflashing the radio will fix op's problem.

That screen from what I can tell is what you get from a bad ruu flash. You need to flash an ruu to completion to fix it.

I left the phone overnight and I guess the battery died. Wont charge when I plug it in. Computer doesn't recognize it either.
What happened was my stupid cat knocked my phone off the computer desk when I was running the ruu and the cable came out. I tried to re run the ruu, but it wouldn't run. Adb commands also did nothing.
Since the phone wont charge and appears to be dead, I ended up using my phone insurance. . . should have a replacement in a few days.

A little bit of help please

So I just got my sensation today from a friend.
It used to be rooted, but he said he unrooted it.
I just checked hboot and it says at the top "unlock" and s-off.
But I do not have root privileges .
A little help trying to figure out what's going on please
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using xda premium
So how do u know ur device is not rooted?
If it says s-off, you're pretty much good to go on installing a custom ROM.
Is there a custom recovery installed? That will be the other thing you'd need.
As far as the ROM you're already using, you can install a non rooted ROM on an s-off phone.
Sent from my HTC Sensation using xda premium
Rooted means the ROM is rooted.
S-Off means the phone itself is 'rooted' (I'm mixing up terminology here to make the explanation simple.)
So you have a phone that you can do anything to. If you install a custom ROM the ROM itself will be rooted, meaning it'll come with Superuser and full root access to the ROM files.
If you have a non rooted ROM on the phone now, you will only be able to flash a new ROM via recovery since you won't be able to run an app like ClockworkMod from the non rooted ROM. But that's no big deal. It just means you'll have to download the ROM you want, copy it to the SD card, and install it via the very easy to use recovery module. And I'd bet heavily that the recovery version on your phone is ClockworkMod and not the stock, so it'll be super easy.
If not, there are still yet other options.
Ok that makes sense.
I just double checked and I'm currently not rooted.
I booted into recovery and I'm current using
4ext 1.0.0.3 beta 7

You are golden.
4ext is a recovery that will let you flash ROMs. With S=Off you can flash most anything you like. If you want to flash an ICS ROM you'll have to upgrade the firmware first (unless it's already been done.)
There are easy to follow guides in the forum on how to do that. Pay attention to the parts about being SuperCID first (It's easy. Just pay attention to it)
For a regular Gingerbread ROM just download the one you want, put it on the SD Card, enter 4ext recovery and flash it. Should take about 2 minutes to set up and about 10 minutes to install the customer ROM after you start the recovery process (10 minutes of the ROM loading. Not 10 minutes of you doing anything. You can go eat a sandwich while the recovery installs the ROM)
If you need any assistance with using 4ext ask for it. (I've never used it so I can't talk you through it. I've only used clockwork) There are plenty of people here who know exactly what the step by step action is to make sure you get it right.

It sounds like you don't have a ROM loaded. The same thing happened to me after I upgraded the firmware. (Which has been done to your phone based on the info you provided) The firmware worked, but it had no ROM to boot into.
A quick re flashing of the ROM through the recovery and everything was back to normal.
With S-On though, I'm not sure you can flash a ROM. can't hurt to try it though. You're not going to make your problem worse.
I'm pretty sure I've already tried that, but I'll have a go again. Thanks for the help.

You need to flash the Clockwork recovery. You can do that by creating a PM58IMG.ZIP file with the clockwork recovery image and putting it on the root of your SD Card and running it as an update.
Or the much simpler way (Meaning fewer extra steps) is to use 4ext this one time to install a custom ROM, boot up into you rnow working phone and download ClockworkMod from the market and let ClockworkMod flash itself as the new recovery.
You might have to install Google Apps separately to get access to the market. That's dependent on the ROM. Some have it prepackaged. Some don't.
You won't have to go back and reinstall the ROM or anything after flashing the new recovery through the ClockworkMod app. Everything will work fine even though you installed it using 4ext.
Thanks a lot bro.
Question.
Can I now, just download clockwork from the market and flash it over the recovery I have now?

No. Not if the ROM you have installed isn't rooted.
Clockwork needs Superuser access to do anything. So it wouldn't be able to function without root.
There's nothing wrong with 4ext. It'll work just fine to boot up once even if you strongly prefer Clockwork.
(Also....not to be greedy, but I wouldn't complain if you hit the thanks button! )

On the plus side it's not worthless. It has value on eBay as a bricked device for parts.
Also, there's a thread around here somewhere called something like "Think you bricked your device? Check here first"
Check in there for other solutions. (That thread might be for the MyTouch 4G. I just switched phones so I've got all my threads between the forums mixed up in my head.)

Yeah that's a thing. Poor build quality at the factory.
From the poll that's up around here somewhere your odds of getting a dusty screen are about 50/50.
You can find that same thread in any forum for any HTC device on XDA. It's poor quality control by HTC.
You can tear the phone apart and wipe it down....but that obviously has a lot of other risks. Unless the dust is so bad it physically blocks the light from the screen from showing through....learn to like it.
Well I did the tear down and hinge fix for the g2.
Can you point me to the direction to what you have said.

That'll give you everything you want to know.
Skip the part about obtaining S-Off since you've already go that. Do the rest of the stuff. (Step 2 in that guide is how to get Clockwork recovery the PM58IMG way. It just doesn't call it Clockwork.)
The first thing you need to do though is pick which of the ROMs you want from the 900 threads in the development section.

Bricked One S -.-

I never thought it'd happen to me..
Anyways.
I'm on Virgin Mobile in Canada, just recently unlocked my bootloader and rooted.
The process was bumpy but ultimately successful..ish.
I couldn't actually flash any roms. Not sure if it was because of the bumpy root process,
but every rom would just bootloop and I'd have to restore and deal with HTC Sense.
Great.
I had downloaded a Liquid [somethingorother] ROM from my PC and flashed it, with blind hope.
It was looping, as I half-expected.
I had this crazy idea that my roms were looping because I had neglected to press the "Perm Root" button
on the AIO root tool I had used.
Ecstatic, I rushed up and pressed that button as soon as I could.
The process went off without a hitch, but the next time I tried to boot something odd happened.
Every time I boot the HTC splash screen stating "this is for development purposes only.. etc" pops up.
-the one that would pop up when entering the bootloader - EVERY TIME.
I tried to restore but this splash screen still shows up, then loops on the HTC ONE screen....
AAAAAND that's where I'm at now. I attempted to factory restore from the bootloader, which would
erase my backups and whatnot. I don't know how infamous this issue is but I am unable to mount my storage.
Plenty other people seem to have this issue.
So, is there anything I can do?
You should try to run an RUU, then report back.

The most common reason for ROMs hanging on boot splash or looping is that you failed to fastboot flash the boot image that comes with the ROM.
The good news is if you can detect the phone in your computer, your phone isn't bricked.
That message you mentioned is normal for all of us flashers
I bet you didn't notice the "tampered" flag or you would have freaked out even more

Unlock your phone again. Change your CID to HTC__001. Then run an unbranded RUU.

Super Bricked (not hard bricked)

Hi my phone the at&t htc one x 2.20 firmware viperxl 2.4.0 beastmode kernel(mpdescision, gpu oc, 2.1ghz oc, etc) has been bricked after a teacher took my phone and gave it to the dean. I had a custom boot animation(about a month now) which it is now stuck on. But after putting a backup on the problem persisted. After multiple different things I tried including the idiot idea of factory reset in bootloader, i have the same problem and no memory space. I have 97 percent battery. Also I don't have any drivers because I had to wipe hard drive(java exploit). Is there a way to install usb drivers when in fastboot. I don't want to have to pay 350+ dollars for a new phone and my dad is pissed off even though he doesn't pay the phone bill or for the phone. I have ubuntu and windows 7. I installed adb and fastboot on ubuntu.
i assume you already relocked bootloader and ran ruu?
I would relock and run the respective ruu ...
I dont know what happened when the dean got your phone... But See what happened is you corrupted the sdcard by factory resetting. You'll need to get on a computer and reformat your SD. Download cleanrom 5.1 and Drag the rom onto your phone and flash it in recovery.

"Super brick"? People are making up even more brick terms now?
If the phone's screen turns on, its not bricked (soft, hard, super or otherwise). It just means you don't know what to do in the particular situation, which is not a brick.

Installing drivers on your computer has nothing to do with whether the phone is in fastboot or not. Just find the drivers, and install on your Windows PC.

thanks yeah i think i'll do this. To be honest I don't even know how he did it. My system had been stable for about two weeks now.
Haha he seen a sick @$$ android and he wanted to try it out!
Don't know if your on hboot 1.14 or not, but cleanrom 5.1 flashes boot.img automatically. So you'll be able to flash with no problems.
I'm assuming your recovery is still good? You're still able to boot into twrp?

[Q] really stuck. twrp accessible but cant reboot to OS

Cant get to regular OS. Screen says tampered on hboot. On twrp I installed a zip but still cant run an OS. I'm lost can't figure this thing out. i'm a first timer
If you have hboot 1.14 you need to manually flash boot.img in fastboot using "fastboot flash boot boot.img"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2136172
How to fix and for future fixes

Ok dude here's what you are going to do.
1. go into the bootloader.
2. read the hboot number if it is 1.14 or higher then get cleanrom 5.1 from scottsroms.com make sure u get the one for the htc one x and it is in archived builds GET 5.1 only 5.1 otherwise still for any other number follow the link, this is just to help you in future installations.
3. download cleanrom 5.1
4. get into twrp while in fastboot/bootloader by hitting bootloader with power key and volume down to recovery which you will click with the power button.
5. plug phone into computer and tap the big 5 sided rectangle like shape that says mount and in there hit mount usb storage or something like that.
6. drag cleanrom 5.1 to the downloads folder or where ever you keep your roms.
7. x out of the file explorer than hit unmount in the phone. Unplug the phone.
8. hit the back arrow in TWRP and go to the wipe menu. Hit factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik cache. If you want to be safe wipe system.(do this for all future rom installations.)
9. go to the install after getting out of the wipe menu.
10. tap clean rom and install the settings you want (make sure you hit the i never took the 2.20 firmware update/unsure option).
11. reboot system
12. wait up to 10 minutes if it doesn't work ruu use instructions on onexroot.com under unroot and then go to unbrick at&t one x
13. for future rom installations if you have hboot 1.14 or higher extract the boot.img and either booting in the bootloader and going to the fastboot menu and putting in the command fastboot flash boot boot.img or as do what i do which is to use the TN win installer to flash them for me in the bootloader.
IF YOU RUUED THEN YOU WILL NEED TO DO STEP 13 To INSTALL CUSTOM ROMS
Say something if this fails or you don't understand.
sorry there's no links xda doesn't let me post links.

This is the HTC ONE XL EVITA. You're gonna brick someone with instructions like this. If this guy who clearly has no idea what he's doing flashes an htc one x rom, he's got an irrecoverable brick.
Since you are a first timer, the best way for these guys to help you is to give them as much information as you can. Don't go flashing anything until you and they understand what it is going on.

dude i have a one xl i flash one xl kernels, roms etc. i just gave instructions on how i get out of of the same situation. I would not be dumb enough to flash a international one x rom on an xl. The only reason I don't give links is because xda doesn't let me. Cleanrom 5.1 has feature for those who bricked and had to ruu or took the ota to 2.20 with hboot 1.14 where you don't have to write the boot.img first.

Good then since you're so capable, you know that when it comes to the one xl and stituations like this, it's best to get all the details hboot, SiperCID, S-ON or S-OFF and what the person did when the brick occured. To just go off spouting unspecific, unteaching instructions like that you're causing more bad than good. Thank you though.
Can I get an AMEN!

I completely agree which is why i gave instructions geared towards someone like this guy who won't give us any thing. The instructions are designed for any hboot and SuperCID. Which btw this guy seriously needs to give us more info.

no offense the best advice giving i've seen so far is dude you need to do fastboot flash boot boot.img to a guy who probably doesn't as far as I can tell is very new to this kind of thing (roms, kernels, s-off etc. )

dude back and forths aside, you're going to need to give as much info. What hboot are you on. what twrp do you have. what did you try to install. what rom are you on. what did you do to install zip (what did you wipe). finally are you s-off (if you don't know what it is you're probably s-on)

give us a blow by blow what happens when you boot. Example: Phone vibrates and goes to white htc screen with read text, then goes to the boot animation for cyanogenmod and doesn't stop the animation unless it is forcebly shut down

I just like to add, before I knew the difference between Evita and endeavor, I flashed cm 10 with the endeavor, and had no problems booting. But then I got decided to switch, and actually found out what the code names represent.

Help
Bootloader says **tampered** and **unlocked**, and I have hboot version 1.14.002. Flashed TWRP. Wiped, so now I don't have my stock OS anymore. Tried to flash Cleanrom 6.5 and selected options, but the install always ends in a second and fails. The reboot screen warns me that I don't have an OS installed and when I do, it tells me that it's a developer build/etc. Help, it's my first time doing this.
Edit: Never mind, used an older version of TWRP, worked.

[Q] Big problem with my phone.

I'll try to make this fast and compact.
I soft-bricked my phone one year ago. To fix it I had to change my hboot value by pulling a file, changing it and pushing it back in. Turns out I did not have to do that.
Now my phone works, has a fake hboot value, it is bootloader unlocked BUT it is S-OFF.
I looked everywhere on the forums all day yesterday and today and yet I cannot find the solution. Maybe I'm too computer illiterate but who knows.
Here are my questions:
-do I need to revert back to stock to get the S-OFF/superCID
-if so how do I install the RUU. Every time I get a failed message with something concerning my HBOOT version error 44.
What ruu are you trying to run?
In the bootloader, does it show S-On or S-OFF?
what hboot version?
What is your Cid? Fastboot oem readcid

The rogers one. I figured since My phone is from rogers it should work.
Here is the link http://d-h.st/jPy
It is the PJ83IMG one.
Thank you for such a fast response.
You need stock recovery to flash that I believe and even then I'm not sure that would work? . You should get a windows executable RUU.
