[Q] Looking for a bit of genuine honesty - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've got a rooted P5110 running the latest Clockwork Recovery and Cyanogen Mod 10.1 and by few apps. I'm running this rom in an attempt to get the Tab2 to be smooth and glitch free. No matter what rom I try I get some level of stuttering and glitchyness even on very mild use such as simple browsing with a couple of tabs open. I've grown tired of trying every possible rom to solve this so I've come to thinking that it is just not possible, no matter what Rom is used, to get the Tab 2 buttery smooth (like an iPad).
My question is to those really up to speed on Roms/Kernels/Modding and it is whether it is genuinely possible (Android/Apple rivalry aside) to make the Tab 2 super-glitch-free like an iPad? I.e. is the Tab2 stuttering a hardware/spec issue that simply can't be overcome by ultra-clever programming or modding?
I'd appreciate honesty on this because I can still (reluctantly) send the Tab 2 back and get an iPad in its place. I don't want to do this but I cannot live with its stuttering anymore but will stick with it if it's easily and genuinely fixable.

Android is a different beast, the software is written for a few hundred devices, where as ipad apps are written for three devices...you well never get that with android, that said I guess I'm not as picky as you because I feel that cm10.1 is smooth with stock or black hawk kernel..

Totally get this but my Android phone (Motorola RAZR I) doesn't stutter at all, no matter what I throw at it. It's got a faster processor (Intel chip) but still it shows that Android doesn't need to stutter. As I understand it the Asus Transformer Prime tablet doesn't stutter at all (but does have other issues) so this brings me back to thinking that the Tab 2 is simply well and unforgivably under spec'ed.

If you want a solid functioning tablet for basic usage without the need for modifications, the ipad is probably best to meet your requirements.

If you really hate lag, there are a few things you can do.
1. If you use SwiftKey, don't. It produces a fair bit of lag when typing.
2. Don't use a live wallpaper.
3. Use a custom homescreen like Nova Launcher.
4. Use Chrome.

The main reason is because apple has loads more years of experience when it comes to software! But also the bloatware that samsung installed doesnt help, ios hibernates the operating sistem when u play a game for example! So all of the ram and cpu power goes towards the game! Where as android the game runs on the top of android. Also there are no home screen of widgets less animations! Should I go on? Honestly android will never run like ios!! Android may get better but so will apple so android will always be behind! Thats why the iphone can run games lag free etc and also why the iphone 5 has less cores and that then the s3 or s4! Everyone says wow look at my s3 4 cores your iphoen 5 only has 2 mine is better! That is wrong! Iphone 5 doesnt need 4 cores! Or 2 gb of ram... etc. So yeah If you don't like lag buy a really expensive device like the note 2 or just buy an ipad!
I hope there were no errors it that!
Press thanks if I helped!

[Q] Best hackable sub-$300 Android tablet?

I'm looking to get my first Android tablet. I've always rooted and run custom firmware on my Android phones, so I need a "cheap" Android tablet with a healthy developer community and a lot of support.
My first thought was to go for the $250 Nook Tablet, spec for spec it's better than the Kindle Fire; but didn't an update come out for it recently that made rooting it near impossible or so highly difficult that it hasn't been done yet?
Then the $200 Kindle Fire came to mind, very popular tablet must mean a very healthy/active hacking/dev community right? But isn't it also locked down in such a way it can't be rooted or modified anymore?
Then I see a $189 Lenovo A1 Tablet at Best Buy with decent specs. It's running Android 2.3 which I'd normally prefer over Android 3.0/Honeycomb but now that ICS/Android 4.0 is out, I'd definately want to run that on my tablet. So is ICS running very good/stable on any sub $300 Android tablet?
I wonder when the $250 Tegra3 based tablet from Asus (or is it Acer...) comes out. Suggestions on which route to go?
My friend has a Kindle Fire, and it's too slow to be called a tablet. It's an E-Reader that can run Apps.
Even the web browser - scrolling and loading pages - is laggy.

Does it run any custom firmware? Or is it 100% stock? The first thing I plan to do is run a custom ROM on it. Even if it's to remove the bloatware and put in a few tweaks, at least it'd be better than stock. My Galaxy S II right now runs a custom ROM based on the factory ROM, so it has full hardware support and such but it's got a lot of tweaks put into it and bloatware removed, etc. the end result is it's got better battery life and runs faster/smoother than any stock Galaxy S II ROM. I'm hoping to get ICS/Android 4.0 onto a tablet, as that's the way to go, but if the dev community isn't quite there yet, then I'm hoping for a custom/tweaked out ROM as a tide-me-over.

He runs stock rooted with Android Market and a custom launcher.
I tested Opera Mobile on it - which uses full hardware acceleration. It was the smoothest browser I tested on the device, but it was still jittery and lagged while scrolling. The GPU and CPU are obviously not that great.

Well it is a cheap tablet new, but I thought it was dual core. Kind of disappointing it's sluggish even with HW acceleration. I just checked the Kindle Fire Android Development forum and it looks like they have ICS/Android 4.0 ROM's for it but the 3 main issues are no HW UI Acceleration; 720p and HD video in general; No bluetooth. I don't care too much for Bluetooth and the 720p video thing isn't that important at the moment (I think), but the no HW UI Acceleration could pose a problem, especially if the CPU is as sluggish as you say.

It is Dual-Core, but it was still laggy when I had tested it. I guess it really bothered me because I was so use to the extremely smooth and fluid iPad 2 & Galaxy S II I own and use day-to-day.
I never tested any custom ROMs, but wish I was able to. It seems to have a lot of popular ROMs and a good developer community.

Moving to Q&A
Sorry about that. Thanks for moving this thread/keeping things organized, I really appreciate what you guys do.
Right now I'm leaning toward the HP Touchpad or the Kindle Fire. Seems CM7 is the better option for both devices and good enough as a daily driver; but CM9 is further along on the Fire than it is on the Touchpad.
I'm in about the same situation.
I vastly prefer the 7" form factor, although I could probably be persuaded to a 10" for the same price range...
Currently, I'm leaning towards the 16G Nook Tablet, mostly because of the RAM advantage it has vs the Kindle Fire.
The fire seems to have a more active dev community, but, once it is rooted & has a working ROM (ICS preferred), isn't that the main thing to be looking for?
However, I am not set on any specific tablet, and am very open to suggestions...
I'm still rocking the original Nook Color. Runs CM7 like a champ, and CM9 builds are showing great progress.
For a thread revival, I figured I would state my final decision & reasons for it, just in case anyone else is looking for similar information...
I ended up going with a Nook Tablet...
I considered the Kindle Fire, but it has 512MB vs the 1G of RAM that the Nook has.
Checking the dev status for the Nook, there is a CM7 running (fairly well, now that I've given it a shot). Once that is 100% (and, in my opinion, it is very nearly there), there really isn't much of a reason to avoid it.
In the day I've had it, I have to say that it has ended up being much better than I was expecting.

[Q] Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 really slow ?

My new Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is really slow :
- the apps menu is slow, looks like 15 fps or so
- crashes games like Riptide GP
- plays games like Angry Birds and Temple Run at some 20 fps
- music player list is also slow
I'll do a hard reset and flash the first custom ROM. Anyone else have the same problems ?
A hard reset will usually cure this issue, try resolving issue before rooting.

I was having the same problem with my Galaxy Tab 2 and did a hard reset. This seemed to fix everything and it is running AOK. I am going to keep it running stock for a while though, its nice and smooth now and I want to wait till there is a really good reason for me to root it. Not to mention I am still waiting on them to get the ROMs a little more fine tuned.
I am on the tab 2 7inch, and mine is not slow. I think it has the same internals as 10"
I'm running the sgrant "clean rom" v 1.1 and Apex launcher and it's smooth as butter, not to mention I got rid of the bloatware.
Pp.

I've moved to Infected ROM - better, but for gaming, it's the same. Can anyone confirm that they can run popular low-medium quality games like Angry Birds and Temple Run smoothly (60 fps) on a GT-P5113 ?
Mine is really slow too It's really not like the Ipad
It's more more slower than an Ipad but I use just to read comics and go on the internet.
I now run latest CM9 with OC kernel, but some older games like Drag Racing are still practically unplayable. Does anyone here have a good experience with this title especially ?
I had the same issue with my new Tab 2 10.1, which manifested itself after only a couple of days.
A bit of digging on the forums stated that it could be a rogue app that was installed, however I was unable to diagnose the offending app.
Perplexed and slightly annoyed I decided to install CM9 and have not looked back.

I think it should because of the GPU & CPU speed of galaxy tab. As we know p5100 using an powervr GPU. NVIDIA Tegra should be better than powervr. But if you want to increase the speed of your tab try to use custom ROM and OC. Or you can sell your tab and buy a new lower price tab like Transformer, Motorola Xoom, or Sony S tablet which powered by Tegra GPU that could run the graphics smoothly :fingers-crossed:
Yep, I already have it on a local free e-bay-like site.

When I install cleanrom 1.1 on my GT-P5113 after following all root procedures, it stucks at boot screen showing samsung galaxy tab 2
And it never progresses beyond that screen. Do you have any suggestions?

I think cleanrom was only built for the tab 2 7.0". If so, it will not work on the tab 2 10inch.
Hopefully you installed a custom recovery like clockwork mod when rooting.
You will need to manually boot into stock recovery and then select recovery again from their. I believe its power and volume down, then vol down to navigate and vol up to select.
Once in your custom recovery (clockworkmod) you will need to wipe data and cache and restore a back up you have made of stock or install a ROM from sdcard. The ROM needs to be specifically made for your device.

Try flashing the original cleanrom 1.0 version first and see how that goes , if its good make a nandroid in cwm, then do the update to 1.1 version. I only ran the 1.0 version for a while, now I'm back on the infected rom, it runs a bit smoother and the Wi-Fi always comes back on after long sleeps.

THis tab is fast, but like any tab or PC you can screw it up if you really try.

Sorry for bumping a thread, but not that tegra crap again. Tegra 2 is barely any faster than the powervr released in 2007 used in the tab 2. Tegra 2 is a crap chip in itself released in 2010-2011 with nvidias marketing gimmick of optimising the hell out of games for invidia, running it at a lower than native res, bumping the graphics high while paying developers to lower graphics for other chipsets and reverse optimise it.
Tegra 2 can't even play high profile 480ps smoothly while powervr sgx 540 + neon can do so at 1080p.

Suck @ss, douche. Go troll somewhere else. If you weren't such an idiot you can mod a Tab so it makes an ipad the irrelevant p.o.s that it is. Thank god you went to Crapple so I wouldn't have to deal with a d-bag like yourself on these forums.

Is it worth it

Hi all i wont to buy Galaxy Note 10.1 and i wont to ask is it worth it i am a gamer and i wont to play this HD games and Order and Chaos can it hold it on high graph.. and what is bad and good in this Galaxy Note 10.1
If you are mostly interested in playing games then I'd look at other tabs...
The main feature of the Note 10.1 is the s-pen. It is good for school work and business but if you want to play HD games there are other cheaper alternatives....
I use mine to watch video's and movies too and find no problem but utilise the s-pen for a variety of things. If I didn't need the s-pen and the phone functions then I would have looked at cheaper alternatives..

I would recommend going to a Best Buy if there is one near you and comparing the Note 10.1 to other tablets. The Note 10.1 is undoubtedly an awesome tablet! I considered buying one myself for a while. I have also considered a Nexus 10, as it's another great choice! With that said, I chose the Asus Infinity over the Note 10.1. I bought it before the Nexus 10 came out, but considered buying the Nexus 10 as well, and then possibly selling my Asus Infinity. I did my research on the two, and chose not to get the Nexus 10. I'm very happy with my Infinity!! I had the Asus Prime before the Infinity, and I feel like Asus makes outstanding tablets! Asus makes awesome phones too for that matter. I actually wish Sprint offered the Asus PadFone 2, as that would no doubt be my current phone!! Asus is also among the first, if not the first, manufacturers to release software updates for their products! The display on the Infinity is full HD and absolutely gorgeous! Not I, or anyone else, can tell you what tablet to get, only you can decide what tablet suits you the best! Just make sure to do your research on them first to see what's gonna work best for you. Check out YouTube videos as well! Also, if flashing is something your gonna be doing, be sure to check out their forums here on XDA and see which developers are cooking for which devices. See what rom and kernel options are out there, as well as themes and mods. Just all boils down to what your needs are, what your wants are, and what you will ultimately using the device for! Either way, good luck with your decision, and I hope you enjoy whatever you get!!
EDIT: FOR GAMING: I can tell you first hand that the Infinity is a beast!! Dead Trigger with the Sixaxis app and a PS3 controller is awesome(just to name 1 game, which is my favorite)!! Even though I have an XBOX 360 and a PS3, I often hook up my Infinity with its HDMI port built in to the side of the tablet, and play on my 55" Sony LED TV! It's absolutely amazing!! If anyone walks in the room, they never believe that I'm playing from my tablet and not a console!! I play Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, Horn, ShadowGun THD, ShadowGun: DeadZone, Modern Combat 4, Max Payne, NOVA 3, Asphalt 7, Need For Speed Most Wanted, Sonic 4 THD, Beach Buggy Blitz, Shine Runner, and on and on, etc. etc. They all look and play amazingly well on the Infinity!! I don't even play Most Wanted on my Evo LTE anymore, only on my Infinity! I expected the tilt steering to be awkward and cumbersome on a 10" tablet compared to my 4.7" Evo LTE, and just assumed I would use the touch screen for steering. I was pleasantly surprised when I first tried it and found that tilt steering was actually better on my tablet than on my phone!!

I had an Asus Infinity and hated the thing, the lag was unbearable, and that was running a custom rom which was an improvement. Gaming was good, and the hdmi out was a plus but not used very much. Also there are some games that are not compatible with it due to resolution. The note although lower resolution is so much snappier. I would definitely not recommend any of the Asus tablets.
In total agreement, I will never purchase another Asus tablet. The Prime was the worst technology buying experience I have ever had. Never again...NEVER!

What is the problem with xoom?

You know, i'm supposed to love all android things, i love my smartphone, but with tablets, i have an xoom that traumatized me because issues, i don't buy any other tablet because that, i don't know if it's only with me or i'm doing something wrong.
The true is that the xoom have a problem, a problem specially with the screen, i don't know, it's not lag, looks like it is but i think is not, for my knowledge on the subject it's with screen refresh frequency that it's not high, is that why you see pixelated movement of screen objects when you do a slowly fast swipe.
It's like the image of icons don't move in the same time and broke the transition, i want to know if that is a hardware issue, is that why xoom have that problem, or it's because Tegra 2 can't handle xoom? I don't want flame, i love my xoom, really but i want to resolve that problem, it's annoying me, i have an iPad 1 with single core 1ghz, xoom is dual core 1ghz with 1 gb, my iPad have 256 and you don't have that problem. Can someone help or explain that for me?
Sorry, my English, i'm Japanese.
I don't have this problem with mine, maybe your ROM is too cluttered. The info you passed is not enough to specify your problem, can you provide some more system info ?

I'm Running Stock 4.0.4 Icecream Sandwich, all stock, i already use CM10.1 and EOS 4.2.2. What i want to say is that my xoom is not fancy on transition and all xoom that i saw is that way too, i have a Galaxy SIII, i know it's a quad-core actually processor but i'm still compare, i haven't lag, it's like the transition it's not fancy, it's smooth but not fancy, it's like play video game on LCD/LED TV, LED have problems with refresh response that make HDMI Video Games not smooth, that's why i said about screen refreshs.
Also i got an Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 in my hands on Store and compared with my xoom display, i will say again, it's not lag or slight lag, it's about the things moving on the screen, you see the trail if i can call it in that way.
I will make a video to show you what i'm talking about.

Hum... But you mean only in the launcher you find the "lag"? The stock launcher has some problems, I'm running EOS 4, with Nova launcher (one screen) and my Xoom is blazing fast, it's not a Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 neither a S3, but it's working well. Try changing the launcher, installing the ROM again and changing the launcher. Mine is quite fast, however I have a friend whose isn't as fast as mine because of the settings

As i said, yeah i know, stock launcher have some lag, but it's not about lag, as an example, what a video with a lot of fast footage, if you see on xoom, on PC and on a OLED TV like i have here, TV is the best way followed by PC, but on xoom i have headache seeing fast movements, you see the trace you know, it's not like instant, as i said i will make a video.

You are using 4.2.2 from CM?
The real problem with the Xoom is that tegra 2 is one of the worst Soc's ever made ..
In Benchmarks tegra 2 is close to OMAP4430 , but in real world most of OMAP4430 run perfectly smooth while TEGRA 2 devices can't even run the launcher smooth .

I have had a combination of Custom Roms and Software that brought the Xoom to a crawl. Currently using latest CM10.1 Nightly, Overclocked with Unified Gapps. A lean amount of Software. I have to say it runs well right now. I do wipe the system fairly often. I try not to dirty flash very often.

How that you cleaned everything? I hate the /0 partition that transform my SD card into internal memory.
You said your warranty was over, did you buy it new? and experiecning this lattely only? If so, its probably not the hardware, just try out different rom, plus maybe overclock it (as warranty is over anyway)
Hardware issue in my xoom was constant reboots and hangs, so after couple of weeks (yee weeks, I thought it was due to honeycomb) I sent coom to motorola and they fixed it on warranty...
Any way - good luck!

Just ordered this exact tablet and am also wondering the same thing. I hope someone has some dev experience with this tablet.

I ordered this exact tablet last week and it just came in the mail. It's an impressive piece of hardware with very little bloatware out of the box, but Jellybean takes up a lot of RAM by default (1/2 is being used just by the thing being turned on). I'd like to figure out the best method to root it at least, though my ideal goal is to put a ROM of an earlier release of the Android OS on it, I'm quite partial to Gingerbread to be entirely honest since it tends to use a lot less RAM and CPU power to run on similar hardware I've used before.
EDIT: Hopefully someone with actual experience can look into rooting this tablet, I tried using some typical "generic Android tablet root" techniques and nothing is working.
How to root Hannspree Quad Core 10.1" Model SN1AT71BUE
Hi. Could anyone tell me how to root Hannspree Quad Core 10.1" Model SN1AT71BUE ? I just bought it for several days. There is something wrong for restart after I installed some Apps from Google play and play some of them to change the default settings. Better provide me with ROM of this tablet, My email is [email protected]. Thanks! Jeff
I got kinda suckered into buying one of you too. They were so cheap so I figured why not. My main complaints are that the operating system seems to be the part that's making it so laggy. When it's actually performing a task it works fairly well. I use NHL GameCenter and for the life of me I can't figure out how to get the streaming for work. SwiftKey keyboard is really laggy and unusable entirely. Also, Chrome seems to be impossible to use because of the lag. Other than that though everything else seems to run fairly smooth so I think it's more of an operating system issue than power issue. The battery is good it sounds good the screen is OK touch screen works...but if I can't use chrome or watch NHL games,I might have to return it.

Tablet seems to perform fairly well in games but is laggy at times on web surfing. As the previous poster noted Chrome is almost unusable it is so laggy. Video apps seem to perform well after they load up. If an item is being downloaded in the background tablet is very laggy. I tend to agree with the previous poster that the main problem is the operating system. Maybe an update to 4.3 will come soon and improve performance.

Yeah I noticed the background downloading slowing it to a crawl. I think that's an issue with the kernel or memory read speed. There are some tweaks that we will be able to do once a working recovery is available that will fix that. Network speed too. I speed checked it and im getting 35mbs so the issue isn't the WiFi unit itself, its just software. I'm hoping somebody will make a nice custom ROM for us

If you want to restore it to factory settings you can do that in the current recovery.

hannspree 10.1
Hi, I have the hannspree 10.1, its OK if you limit your apps which shouldn't be the case considering the spec, does anyone know how to root, would really appreciate any help, thanks

hansspree 10.1
nothing out yet...it's just the os on it that sucks...just upgraded to 4.2.2 and it even slower...once theres a rom it will eliminate all the bloat in it...just hold on to it and wait...you will not get a quad core for that price...
Its a really terrible a5 based quad-core.. A dual core a9 would run circles around it. There isn't really any bloat in the rom, they didn't do much of anything to it. No custom rom is gonna upgrade the cpu or craptastic generic gpu. If you can return it, go do that. If you can't, I'm sorry, but it's never going to respond like an a9. It sucks that actions is full of lies, and Hannspree bought them, and retailers don't care what they are selling you.

After the update to 4.2.2, this thing is horrid slow. I had high hopes for this tablet. Now I'm kind regretting it. Until a better ROM is built with a custom kernel we are screwed.

I agree 100%, 4.2. Update is worse than original. Try downloading CPU tuner and pimp my ROM from play store it will help, until custom ROM is built.

Appears to have had memory issues. In process of RMA.

So I just found out that the UK variant is running KitKat. If some can find anyone in the UK that can pull the rom for it, we can get this running much better than it currently is.
Can anyone point me into a direction where I could find the operation system and how to install
