Kernel/ota questions

I've successfully recovered my tablet using this method. I was trying to update my TF using the batch script method and somehow managed to flash an outdated kernel. I know this because Asus tech support told me that was the reason my TF wasn't receiving the ota to 3.2. However, Asus tech support also told me that I could flash a new kernel by downloading the source code onto my tablet, then the TF would automatically recognize the [.rar] file and install my new kernel; which didn't work out as you might imagine.
I am now on official 3.1 8.4.4.11.and my kernel is v 2.6.36.3-00011-g3eb19ex And I can't get the OTA update. At one time I had official 3.2 [after previously flashing stock 3.1] but decided to try to root when I found out Netflix wasn't officially supported like the EEE pad site says it does.
Every time I try the batch script method, I end up stuck on the eee pad logo screen. Adb is working as well as apx drivers. Ultimate goal here is stock 3.2 rooted with netflix, but at this point I'd settle for stock official 3.2.

And +1 on wrong section. This is not related to developing a new ROM or features for the Eee Pad.

I'm trying to avoid flashing CWM, that's where I end up bricking it.

I would suggest you to try Nvflash. it is the easiest way to root that tf.

I think the relationship between nvflash and the TF is complicated.
There are a few bootloaders out there, including the one used by custom roms, as well as the 4 stock ones.
My theory is that the kernel images in the boot and recovery images have to match the bootloader that is on the TF.
Throw in the fact that the bootloader is only written using the nvflash --create command or during the OTA update, and we have TFs with all kinds of different bootloaders going around that won't match what people are flashing. I think this is why CWM breaks whenever there is a stock OTA that rewrites the bootloader. I think most people brick trying to go back to stock from a custom rom. Going from stock to custom usually isn't a problem because the compatible bootloader is flashed in the rooting process.
Is this the first time we've seen an completely unlocked bootloader on Android?

Use the NVFlash unroot method here:

That will get it back to stock everything with 8.4.4.5. Then, you can manually install 8.4.4.11 with the download on the Asus website. After that it will recognize the OTA update to 8.6.5.6. Once you've done all that, use the Batch Script for a quick root, and you're done. I did this today. As long as you follow all the steps, it's a breeze.

I don't think it will recognize the OTA update to 8656. Roach's update will work, but not the stock update.

It will recognize it, because if you follow all the steps I listed, you're completely stock until you run the batch script to root 3.2. I did this myself on my transformer today.

My OP is not very clear, but that is exactly the steps I've followed to get to where I am today. I've given it 2 days to detect the new update and i've got nothing. I'm currently sitting on stock 8.4.4.11 waiting for the OTA.

How did you root before and what were you running before you went back to stock 8445?

Did you ever make a backup with CWM when you had 3.2?

no it was stock 3.2 firmware/recovery

Thinking of rooting, questions

Hey guys! New and proud TF300T owner. I got it last Friday and am absolutely LOVING it so far. This will be my 8th android device of all time and I am starting to get that itch to root it. First and foremost, i'm on the .30 firmware. This is the newest version and it updated as soon as i turned it on. I'm hoping that won't be a problem.
My first question, should i root? I'm loving ICS and i haven't seen a LOT of different ROMs available in the thread. Since this is my first android Tablet i'm sort of asking myself, why should i root? The Pad is very, very fast. The OS is nearly perfect. So i'm wondering, besides the obvious "Because we can" answer, why did you root yours?

Do you guys think its the best way to go? Should i unlock w/Asus tool before i start this guide? Can anyone recommend a rom? I heard CM10 is coming to the 300 and i have always loved Cyan since my days with the G1.

It all depends on you. I rooted mine and am using CM10 (Jellybean 4.1.1) and love it. Stock is actually pretty good though on this device, usually stock Android blows. I would think you would have to be dumb to brick your device at this stage, everything is pretty simple, and you have ways to getting back to stock with ease anyway.
This is what I did. I unlocked my boot loader using the tool from asus, I then flashed CMW from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1668173 , after booting into fast boot (power on, hold down vol, on the next screen you have three icons, select the middle one), and then flashed the root file. You have to put your ROMs you want to flash on the tablet memory, CMW doesn't support external memory yet.

I question for you? Now that you are running CM10 Jellybean, do you see any improvement with the I/O problem (very slow R/W) and what about flash player? Thanks

yes the debugfs link you posted is the safest way to root, and it is drop dead easy

hydro is based on stock and is smokin fast
night and day difference

if it aint root, let's break it!
I could not handle not having root
there's too many things I do that require it

sounds right, I do have 1 suggestion or maybe just a simplification
if you plan to use TWRP
download gooManager from the play store, it has an option that will install TWRP for you automatically
and also don't forget
step 3.5 go into TWRP and make a nandroid backup, and copy the backup to somewhere same
I doubt you'll have any issues, but better to have a backup
and not need it
than need a backup and not have it

Just my personal opinion ... unless you just have to have a custom ROM, forget unlocking and just root it. You won't violate your warranty and we're going to be getting jelly bean in a few months from Asus. This is exactly what I did running v30 and I'm loving it this way. Stock ROM isn't too bloated.

Yeah...I haven't taken the plunge yet. Its my day off and i love tinkering with stuff like this but i'm just having a hard time justifying unlocking/flashing on a device that already performs so well. Torn!

First answer, rooting isn't the same as unlocking and flashing! You can root without unlocking, like others have said there aren't that many ROMs out there and the stock is pretty good IMO.

Hey, I just unlocked my tf300-will I not be able to get jellybean at all when it comes out?!

You will have to flash the stock update through cwm or twrp, whichever recovery you used.

I havent unlocked yet but its my day off now and im thinking about doing it now. The only thing im worried about is i keep seeing people having issues like "soft brick after restore"...i mean whats that about? I have backed up/restored and flashed a million roms on all my other unlocked android devices over the years and have NEVER had a soft brick just doing a restart? I mean i suppose ive gotten a bad rom before that wouldnt boot but when that happens i just usually go back to recovery and restore what i had before. Also, it seems like TWRP has more issues then CWM at this point. Is that just me, or is that true ? What the advantage of TWRP then if that is the case? Sigh...I wanna unlock and flash it so bad! But i just can't bring myself to do it for some reason!

How to update to Jelly Bean?

Before anybody says to use the search function, I've been looking through the general topics non-stop for one that applies to my situation, and either it slipped through the cracks (likely) or it doesn't exist (not likely).
Basically, my tablet is rooted and unlocked, and I'm on ICS; the first one that had face unlock in it. I'd really like to update my tab to JB, but I need to be pointed toward directions for updating a rooted and unlocked tab. But on top of that, I also need recent instructions, because I know that earlier attempts at getting this thing updated have resulted in lots of bricked tabs.
If anybody could tell me if it's possible to update my tablet to JB right now, I'd appreciate it, and if someone has figured out how to do it, can you please point me toward that thread? I'd really appreciate it.

I believe the first thing to do is enabling NVFLASH, that will make things safer also in the worst cases.
I did that and now hopefully I have an unbrickable device.
I'm a bit confused on how to go forward, I know that there are two versions of twrp, maybe I should install the JB version, booting inside it and then flash the downloaded JB update from ASUS site, or use the twrp for ICS for flashing and after that install the JB version ?
Anyone knows what is the correct option ?

Keep ICS, as JB will cause much trouble especially if you are rooted, trying to OC and is generally slowein my opinion

I prefer to try it anyway, tomorrow I will try flashing, after all if something will go wrong I should be able to recover with nvflash.

Thank you, Grim. That's disappointing to hear about JB, but if you think that my current build is better than that (which makes sense considering I've seen at least one thread about downgrading from JB to ICS), then I will keep my tab on ICS for now, and thank you for your input, I appreciate it.

If you have twrp recovery, can't you download the jb ROM from the Asus site for your region and flash it in? I'm unlocked and that's how I upgraded one version of jb to another, but my ICS to jb was ota, so in your case I can't speak from experience. There is a full upgrade, and root guide in the general section.

I just managed to do what you re looking to achieve.
I m pretty noob so it tok me a whole day to figure it out.
So first download jb update on asus website (pick the right one for ur type of tf300)
Flash it through adb
At that point i got jb installation working but bootloop
So i flashed jb version of twrp (adb)
I then went in recovery and flashed clean rom 2.5 which worked flawlessly
Just for the fun i did factory reset afetrwards and stock jb eventually launched right

I successfully installed jb following the guide on this site, the only thing that was not working was the flashing of the stock rom, neither given options worked (fastboot flash recovery or fastboot flash system) , I discovered that our eepad has a partition nmed staging used for firmware installs. I then flashed with
fastboot flash staging blolb
and all went good.
Btw I find the JB better than ics, more responsive and smoother, and also if it is not yet overcooked.

Hey guys, I just ordered this tablet today on sale from newegg. Pretty excited for it! I had a nexus 7 I purchased today but for $30 I feel I got a lot more tablet.
I have only rooted two devices in the past, my S3 and Droid X2, both were either 1 click roots or simply plugging into odin and flashing a rooted image.
I saw there were two different guides, one was very in depth..I also heard of tablets coming with a new software update that might not be rootable yet? Which is the best guide to follow for rooting this device?
Also, I noticed there are two CWM recoveries, one for JB and one for others. When I update to the latest JB OTA, and flash that, what happens when I install a custom ROM, should I flash the 'other' CWM then?

For rooting and installing custom recovery, check out the videos on the link there, especially the ones from allaboutandroid. There should be a step to unlock your tablet there as well...
I'm guessing you're still on stock ICS, yes? In that case, after you apply the OTA JB update from Asus, you should install the CWM for JB only. You don't lose recovery after you flash a custom ROM. Do not, however, attempt to flash a JB ROM on ICS recovery, and vice versa. That would soft brick your tablet. Hope that helps

Well, it doesn't really matter which step you do first, but you might as well apply the OTA first, and then unlock and flash custom recovery + root all at once. Also, there might be a chance that you won't be getting the OTA notification from the tablet itself if you unlock first (some users reported this, although it doesn't seem to be across the board)...

I recall reading somewhere about two types of recoveries. One for stock JB and one for everything else. If I flash a custom ROM will I need to change my recovery at all if I go with TWRP JB?

No, unless you want to flash stock-based ICS ROMS, which by now is kinda outdated anyway (they even ported CM10 to the JB bootloader already). TWRP should do the trick for some time

Sounds great, thanks for all the replies. I would hate to get my tablet and accidentally brick it (I would probably cry). It was between this and the Nexus 7 but I feel I made the right choice. My S3 already has a decently big screen, 3 more inches isnt worth $300 IMO. However 6-7 more I think is a winner!
Edit: Ugh, looks like an update was pushed out today. Curious if this will break the rooting methods or not...

[Q] Order of going about things

Hello everyone,
Just registered on XDA after buying a TF300...I have an HTC Thunderbolt rooted with ThunderShed on it, so I'm not a complete noob to the scene of Android, but I'm still pretty inexperienced. Now that that's out the way, I was just wondering if this process would "work" when I recieve my Tf300 (ordered it, its being shipped)
1. Use ASUS's program to unlock my bootloader
2. Do the NVFlash process in order to make my TF300T brickproof
3. Root my TF300 using adb/fastboot/all that stuff
4. Flash <insert ROM here>
5. Go crazy
So yeah, is there anything that I'm missing? Or anything that NEEDS to be done before something else? Or should I be able to do these things in this order and have no problem?
(Oh, and side question. I've used CWM on my HTC Thunderbolt, and gotten used to it. However, I am pretty open minded about other recovery options *cough* *cough* TWRP. Do you guys have any recommendation, or does it really not matter which recovery I choose?)

From what I've read, it seems that TWRP is better suited for our TF300T (no stability issues).

Everything looks good.
Note:
If you are going to flash a custom rom there is no need to root. A custom rom could be unrooted but I haven't used one on this unit that wasn't already rooted.
+1 on twrp recovery
Twrp can use internal or external sdcard, has a file manager and a terminal. Also I like the fact that I can properly name my backups beforehand.

Bad news guys...just received my TF300 and it unfortunately came with 4.1...which is Jelly Bean. So now I can't do the NVFlash for sure...Anything else I can't do?

The only other thing that will be a problem now is if you wanted to flash an ICS rom because you have the JB bootloaders. That's about it.
