I picked up a used Samsung Galaxy S i9000 that was on Virgin (CDMA?). I rooted it, and put JB on it. From another device, I have a Telus data plan that is on 4G. Looking at the i9000 specs, it says it supports GSM and 3G. This where I get confused. The Telus plan I am on is 4G LTE (data). Does this mean that this Sim could fall back to 3G if I use it in my Samsung? I have ran a number of unlock tools (including the Samsung Galaxy S Unlocker) and think that my phone is unlocked, but the radio shows that there is no connection. When I ran the unlocker, it completes but does not say "its done". I can see that I now have the correct APN setting for Telus. The phone sees my SIM and my phone #. And I have the nv_data.bin file ( was not there before running the unlocker). When I look at the phone details, it sees my SIM, knows my phone number etc. It just won't connect. It also has the correct APN settings. If I try to dial a number or use the data, it does not work. Wondering if there are other settings I am missing?
I think the issue is that the sim only runs on Telus 4G and does not fall back to 3G (what the phone is capable of), but again, this is where I am green. I don't know how this works. Does the phone 'ask' the Sim to fall back, or does the network and Sim dictate to the phone what network it will use?
Area of coverage: Burlington Ontario (GTA). Sorry if this has been discussed, but my search terms did not find anything.
Wrong forum, Samsung S i9000 does not equal Samsung Galaxy S 4G (aka T959V or T959W).
My bad. Sorry about that.

Ok, so I've searched all over and haven't had much luck. I have no experience with cdma phones, as t mobile is all I've ever had.
I was given a new US Cellular HTC Hero s. I opened it up and saw the sim slot and though, sweet I can replace my sensation with it (I smashed the screen pretty bad). Well, that was a no go, as the phone is cdma. Looking online though, I see it can run in gsm (options global mode, cdma mode, gsm / umts mode. I unlocked the bootloader using the htc site (not sure it matters) and popped in my sim card again, and tried both global and gsm mode, though neither got signal or would dial out. (under networks, it had the tmo apn info.)
So, is the GSM mode offered on this phone only for non US bands? Would a custom rom (now or down the road) allow it to work on tmo? I read something about the HTC Merge and someone being able to switch out the modem in the rom that allowed it to work in the US, but that is well beyond me. I can follow instructions, work ADB and flash roms.. but thats about it.
Is it possible, or will it soon be, to have this phone work on GSM or am I just stuck trying to sell it as a us cellular phone (or perhaps another cdma carrier.. like I said, I don't know anything about cdma)
As a Canadian I'm not sure about who owns US cellular or if they are their own company but I'm guessing they work like Verizon world phones. They have sim card slots but will work only outside of the US. If those verizon phones are used within the States, they will only pick up Verizon's frequency, as opposed to T-Mobile or AT&T where you can unlock them and use them with any GSM carrier within the States. But yeah, you can unlock it and it will work with any GSM carrier outside the States but within the States I think it will only work under US Cellular CDMA network...please correct me if I'm wrong.
That's right, u.s. cdma "world phones" have gsm radios but are locked down from connecting to gsm networks in the u.s. This is not just the normal sim lock found on gsm phones but they are hard coded to ignore u.s. gsm networks.
Some have been unlocked to work on any network through various methods including flashing a modem from a non-us varient of the same phone and other hacks. I can't comment specifically on this phone however.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Well, that points me in the right direction, and confirms what I read about swapping modems (on the other phone mentioned).
So basically it's software telling it not use a certain frequency, and not that the phone itself is incapable of picking it up (had my doubts about that)
Pretty shady the way phone companies are allowed to operate (don't get me started on my unlimited internet in my contract [pre data caps in tmo]. "Hey! check it out, this phone uses data 5 times faster than your old one, oh, and you get half as much too) sorry, end of rant.
I'll keep searching, and post if I find something..
On a side note, can cdma phones be flashed to another cdma carrier like verizon or sprint, or is it the same deal, coded to only use a certain frequency range?
only thing I've heard of is flashing sprint and verizon phones to cricket, metro pcs and boost.
This may seem a dumb question but here it goes anyways. I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus S that was on Rodgers with the following info:
V. 4.1.2 ......i9020AUCKF1......Build JZ054K. When i insert my Mobilicity sim card, it doesnt connect to their network. The sim works fine on other phone. Is there a way to flash or change some setting on the phone to make it connect. Thanks very kindly.

Rogers Nexus S does not support Wind/Mobi frequency (1700 AWS on HSPA). Model i9020A is what rogers carries whereas i9020T is the model compatible with Wind/Mobilicity.
p.s. it's spelled Rogers not Rodgers; no idea how someone mispels that when the brand is basically everywhere in Canada.
Cheers.
They are different frequencies and won't support eachother.
Rogers phone's won't work with Mobilicity/Wind sims, and wind/mobilicity sim cards will only work on rogers' 2g network (no data).
This applies even if the phones are unlocked. Only way a rogers phone can work on mobilicity is if it's a penta band factory unlocked phone, but the Nexus S isn't. Some Galaxy Nexus are but you have to confirm before buying.
You should now resell the phone and buy one that's originally from Wind/Mobilicity and make sure it's unlocked. Then it will work.
This is a question on a SGS II. Checking with the masterminds that make up XDA as a whole as well as the SGS II thread. Hoping to find some kind of answer.
Sup XDA. Months since I last posted. Question on the SII. My brother has an OLD mytouch 4g from t-mobile. POS. I grabbed him a mint SII on straight talk. Rooted and flashed to 4.2.2 Collective Rom (love the theme and usability!)
Question is, now that I put some time into it, is it possible to use this device on TMO USA? Popping the SIM in does nothing. Added TMO APN (which does nothing as it does not see the carrier) but does not track a signal. Is the radio incompatible or is there another step? Does not give me the classic SIM lock message when booting, so my feeling is that it is just incompatible. Does the phone need an updated TMO sim card? I have Googled and Googled and checked the XDA threads. I found a few sim unlock apps for the SII but they have no effect on this phone.
Any and all help is appreciated! Happy 4th of July!!

I don't own an SGS2, so I don't know the specs. First check to make sure the phone is capable of using the tmobile bands e.g. 850, 900, 1700, 1900, 2100 MHz. Not all SGSII are made the same. Also make sure your APN settings are right, reset network settings and readd the correct APN. Delete the ST APN if possible. If not of those work, get a radio from a tmobile SGSII and try using that. Most of the time, changing out radios won't brick your device, so it's worth trying.
So I had a boost phone that recently broke. It had a sprint sim card. My mom got a new phone and gave me her S6 SM-g920a. I had to go online to get it unlocked. Upon unlocking it and it not working I called att. They told me it wasn't compatible. Ok.. So then I read on xda if you root it there's a way you can unlock it for my sim. Cool. Problem is my computer fried the other week. No oden no flashing nothing. My questions - Is it true rooting it will really make the sim compatible? And can you root this phone using no oden or even computer?
Thanks in advance
Not really.
The S6 SM-G920A is an AT&T phone (the A at the end of the model indicates AT&T model) so it uses GSM technology and can work with only a GSM SIM card.
Boost and Sprint are both CDMA networks, this means they use CDMA technology.
So, your phone, previously from AT&T, recognizes only GSM bands. Whereas Boost and Sprint use other bandwidths.
Check your phones and networks bads here and see if they really are compatible: https://www.frequencycheck.com/carriers/at-t-united-states
If their not, then you could use this phone only with GSM networks, such as AT&T, T-Mobile, Cricket, MetroPCS
Well that's just disappointing. Thank you very much for your help though
I'm being told that my device is going to be booted off AT&T because my XZP is only running at 3G (according to at&t support engineers). I find this hard to believe.
I had some initial issues with the sim because I used the sim from an older phone, which could only do 3G, so it wasn't registered on their network as capable of anything else. The jerks in the store were of no help, and even got attitude with me about dropping my sim into a new phone to see if it would register. Luckily, I had a bud who had a brand new LTE AT&T phone, so I popped my sim in there, let it register, get access to all their new/current bands, and then I put the sim back in my XZP... lo and behold, all the capabilities were unlocked.
I have been running the at&t apn for high speed, phone started using 4g+ when the LTE rollout finally got fully deployed.
In trying to run down if AT&T is full of crap or not about kicking my phone off the network that is "only using 3G"... I came across this https://apn.gishan.net/en/apn/att/sony-xperia-xz-premium
It shows I should have a bearer of LTE, and I do not. I have 4G and all of the older network types, but no LTE. Does anyone else have this? If so, what network are you on? My phone should be current on its updates, as old as they are...
Maybe I need to drop this sim into a current gen phone again and let it register on their network?
Any ideas/feedback is appreciated.
