Lenovo P770 complete root and flash guide - Miscellaneous Android Development

P770 Flashing and rooting guide:
NOTE: Dropbox has temporarily suspended my public links for "generating too much trafic". Please use a mega alternative.
NOTE1: understand that I cannot keep no warranty or responsibility on a result of your effort. Please consider your abilities as following operations can easily brick your device. Also, for some dealers of mobile phones, modification like those bellow results in loss of your warranty.
NOTE2: this guide, all the modifications are created by community, to community. Please be noted that non of those shall be used for commercial purposes. Also I will not provide any support to those who wants to use stuff bellow anyhow for commercial purposes.
NOTE3: please note that I am not a pro-programmer, developer, geek. I am a bit advanced user who shares its result to community. All the stuff is provided as-is.. I am able to help but in time limits of my demandative work and personal life that is not on web .
NOTE4: if you have phone from Etotalk with their ROM, it already includes CWM. But the CWM has been modified by Etotalk to prevent a ROM Backup. Some features common in “normal” CWM might not work in Etotalk version.
Lets go!
This guide contains:
1) Short explanation of P770 firmware versions and its differences
2) Preparation for phone memory flashing
3) Guide for Winflash recovery flashing, including english CWM (Clockwork Mod Recovery)
4) Guide for rooting your phone (using CWM) and Google Apps (optionally)
5) Flashing your ROM - general
6) Guide for ROM flashing using Winflash utility
7) Guide for ROM flashing using CWM
8) Guide for ROM flashing using CWM - Recovery
9) Recommended ROMs and links
1) Short explanation of P770 firmware
P770 has two branches of fimware – “World” and “Asian” versions.
First and very crucial difference is, that they use different memory partitioning, resulting in fact that it is not possible to combine those two versions freely. Trying to do so may result in bricking your phone. Details will described in point 5 bellow:
Main differences for users are:
Asian version, marked S118-S124: usually more actual as Lenovo is focused on Asian market. Typically does not include Google Apps, and very often packed with strange Chinese applications of questionable use. Usually supports only Chinese and English
World version, marked S106-S113
Version for world customers, usually shrinked from useless apps and containing Google Apps. Released with a bit delay compared to Asian version. Better support of European languages, sometimes contains more languages than English. I suppose that version is prepared mainly for Russian Market
2) Preparation for memory flashing:
a) Download this package and upack it as a whole somewhere in your computer:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/25344416/P770/P770_update_utility.zip
alternative link: https://mega.co.nz/#!tFcFyAhJ!OInJjjvLV8VYtJUIvN0EKEJo7vI8ul9kDzv9y_3ukNg
b) Turn off your phone, unplug cable, remove battery. Insert the battery but DO NOT plug your cable or power on the phone.
c) Open your device manager in “windows/system”
d) Connect your phone by cable. A new device named “MT65xx Preloader” shall appear for about 3 seconds in a section “Unknown devices”.
e) Catch it with mouse and manually change the drivers to the ones located in “SP_Drivers_v1.5” folder of downloaded (unpacked) file.
f) After updating, turn off phone, unplug and remove battery, reinsert battery and plug a phone. You should see a device “MediaTek Preloader USB VCOM (Android) (ComX)" in a “COM and LPT” section. If you see it, you are ready to go!
- If you don’t see it, you did something wrong, most probably you were not fast enough in point e), retry from b)
NOTE: if you are unable to pass step 2, please reconsider your decision to play with your phone. If something goes wrong during next phases, you will probably end up lost and sad with bricked phone :crying:
3) Guide for Winflash recovery flashing, including CWM (Clockwork Mod Recovery)
a) Turn off your phone, unplug cable, remove battery. Insert the battery but DO NOT plug your cable or power on the phone.
b) Run flash_tool.exe from directory downloaded in 2a
c) Hit “Scatter loading” button and choose a file “MT6577_Android_scatter_emmc” from a directory according to a FW version you have (described in Point 1):
110_recovery for a “world” version
121_recovery for a “Asian” version
Don’t mix it up otherwise a flashing will fail.
d) Hit “download” button and confirm any warning message.
e) Connect the phone by cable (phone has to be off and in state described in 3a)
f) Red bars on bottom side of the screen will show you a progress. When finished, green circle will appear.
g) Close flashtool.exe, unplug your phone, remove a battery, reinsert it.
h) To boot to CWM do this:
Press and Hold a power button for about 2 seconds, then release it and simultaneously press and hold volume buttons (both + and -) until phone boots to CWM
4) Guide for rooting your phone (using CWM) and Google Apps (optionally)
a) Download this zip file and place it to the root of your SDCard
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/25344416/P770/Root_by_javum.zip
alternative link: https://mega.co.nz/#!MYd1UQyL!DwroiHcoML_iEHD2r1pwvSReM2MZgXJlhjeWMaeHlkM
b) Reboot to CWM (point 3h), choose “install zip from sdcard” “choose zip from sdcard” and choose the Root_by_javum.zip file. As the update proceeds, your phone is rooted. Reboot
Optional: Install google apps if necessary
c) Download this zip file and place it to the root of your SDCard
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/25344416/P770/gapps-jb-20120726-signed.zip
https://mega.co.nz/#!ERUzQAYa!RNAKJAxLj38cLKi_ezNIpClrHoYIiIaPGHmKqwzcieQ
d) Reboot to CWM (point 3h), choose “install zip from sdcard” “choose zip from sdcard” and choose the “gapps-jb-20120726-signed .zip” file. As the update proceeds, your phone has GAAPS included. Reboot
Note: this Google apps will work with a roms using Android 4.1.1, for other versions, different gaaps might be needed.
5) Flashing your ROM – general
Generally you have 3 options how to flash your ROM – full wipe by FLASHtool, via CWM zip install or via CWM recovery. The choice is usually up to the creator of the ROM as he chooses a way how backup is created.
Flashtool way is a most basic one, it erases not only a rom, but also repartitions a memory and erases internal data. SD card remain untouched. Flashtool way is very useful for switching from “World” to “Asian” version”
If you want to switch from “World” to “Asian” you have as a first step flash an Asian version by flashtool (e.g. you can use a P770_S121_winflash linked in point 9), then flash whatever Asian version you want. To switch back to European you have to use flashtool again (e.g flash P770_S110_winflash). Maybe there are a different ways, but this is only safe process I would recommend.
LAST WARNING: as mentioned above – for CWM flashes, NEVER mix up an “world” and “asian” version of ROM. The reason is that both types are having different partitioning, so if you will be lucky, the flash will fail. If you are unlucky, the flash will proceed, and you have just successfully bricked your phone
NOTE1: first boot of the phone can easily take about 5 minutes. If the phone stuck on boot logo for 10 minutes or more you have 2 options:
a) Boot to CWM and wipe everything (see point 7) and reboot
b) Reflash ROM again, or reflash another ROM.
NOTE2: some ROMs are rooted, some are not. Some includes Gaaps, some not. For guide how to solve it, return to point 4.
NOTE3: As there is mistake in Android 4.1.1, commercial widgets disappears after reboot. Its a mistake of Android, not ROM and can be easily solved by Titanium Backup. (App with widget you want to use has to be backuped by TB, then uninstalled and recovered from backup (all by TB). Problem shall be solved in next release of Android:
6) Guide for ROM flashing using Winflash utility
a) Turn off your phone, unplug cable, remove battery. Insert the battery but DO NOT plug your cable or power on the phone.
b) Run flash_tool.exe from directory downloaded in 2a
c) Dowload a ROM you need (you might look at point 9)
d) Hit “Scatter loading” button and choose a file “MT6577_Android_scatter_emmc” from a directory with a ROM
e) Hit “Firmware update”, the program will check the images (purple bars running in bottom part) and then awaits a connection of a phone:
f) Connect the phone by plug (phone has to be off and in state described in 6a)
g) Red bars on bottom side of the screen will show you a progres. When finished, green circle will appear.
h) Reboot.
7) Guide for ROM flashing using CWM
a) Download a ROM you want to flash (you may see Point9) and copy a zip file to a root of your SD card.
b) Reboot to CWM (see 3h) and do “wipe factory data” and “wipe cache”. Go to “advanced” and do “wipe Dalwik cache”.
c) choose “install zip from sdcard” “choose zip from sdcard” and choose the file you have placed on SD card.
d) When update is finished, perform one more time “wipe factory data”. Reboot.
8) Guide for ROM flashing using CWM - Recovery
a) Download and unpack a ROM you want (you may see Point9), to a directory on your card /clockworkmod/backup, that means that final route shall be /clockworkmod/backup/Romdirectory
b) Reboot to CWM (see 3h) and do “wipe factory data” and “wipe cache”. Go to “advanced” and do “wipe Dalvik cache”.
c) Choose “backup and restore”, “restore” ad “Romdirectoryname”. Restoration might end by error message, but its no reason to be scared.
d) Reboot

Fast guides for "typical scenarios", all the links in guides points to the steps described in first post.
1) I want to backup my Etotalk ROM:
Note: Etotalk uses its own, modifyed CWM version. It does not allow to perform a ROM backup, so a backup starts but never ends until phones memory is full. To backup your ROM you have to:
1.1. prepare your computer for winflash acc point 2
1.2. Flash "S121_recovery" according point 3 you will have CWM 5.5.0.4
1.3. Reboot to CWM, and perform a flash backup (advanced-backup and restore-backup)
Note: "Etotalk" rom is based on asean S_121 firmware, for going back to Etotalk, follow steps according scenario 5.

2.1. prepare your computer for winflash acc point 2
2.2. perform a winfflash of S110 rom (link 9.2) acc point 6
2.3. flash "S110_recovery" according point 3, you will have CWM 5.5.0.4
2.4. Now you can flash any rom or mod of "European family" you want. Be noted that flashing can overwrite your CWM again, so if it happens, repeat step 3.
2.5. (optionaly) root your ROM according point 4
3) I have Etotalk ROM and I want to switch to other "Asian" ROM (S118-124)
3.1. prepare your computer for winflash acc point 2
3.2. perform a winfflash of S121 rom (link 9.1) acc point 6
3.3. flash "S121_recovery" according point 3, you will have CWM 5.5.0.4
3.4. Now you can flash any rom or mod of "Asian family" you want. Be noted that flashing can overwrite your CWM again, so if it happens, repeat step 3.
3.5. (optionaly) root your ROM according point 4
4) I have Asian version (118-124) and I want to switch to "European" ROM (S106-113)
4.1. prepare your computer for winflash acc point 2
4.2. perform a winfflash of S110 rom (link 9.2) acc point 6
4.3. flash "S110_recovery" according point 3, you will have CWM 5.5.0.4
4.4. Now you can flash any rom or mod of "European family" you want. Be noted that flashing can overwrite your CWM again, so if it happens, repeat step 3.
4.5. (optionaly) root your ROM according point 4
5) I have "European" ROM (S106-113) and I want to switch to Asian version (118-124)
5.1. prepare your computer for winflash acc point 2
5.2. perform a winfflash of S121 rom (link 9.1) acc point 6
5.3. flash "S121_recovery" according point 3, you will have CWM 5.5.0.4
5.4. Now you can flash any rom of "Asian version" you want. Be noted that flashing can overwrite your CWM again, so if it happens, repeat step 3.
5.5. (optionaly) root your ROM according point 4

Guys, please think twice before you ask by PM. Last days I am overloaded by the tons of questions, and about half of them are motivated by your tendency to save your time by wasting mine. Especialy questions like"please can you compare batery life to SXXX" drives me crazy....
If you want to know - flash and try.
If you are too scared of bricking you phone - keep your stock ROM
I dont want to be unpolite, but please do not be offended if your PM remains unanswered, especially when its obvious that you did not even read whole guide.

Very nice, thanks for your sharing!

Nice work! :good:

I flashed your S124 ROM while my phone was S110... Before you created this thread... I didnt brick my phone.
S124 is a nice ROM but i missed the business theme and magic launcher and lotus widget so i flash back original ROM.
About partitioning, does anyone know how to make internal storage bigger and usb storage smaller? Cause unfortunately stock ROM takes lot of internal memory space...

Lucky you. I found several threads reporting a problems during S110xS124 and vice versa, so I recomend full flash as safe way.
As my primary goal is to shrink a size of a ROM, live wallpapers, etc are intentionaly deleted in my mods.

Non of above links is work

hallo, seems that a Dropbox has suspended my public links. I have added Mega alternatives.
sekptar: I hope that a to-do writen above is complete, all the informations are there. First flash the full S110 ROM according points 2 to 6. Then if you want, flash my S110 mod according point 7.
I dont know about any ROM with full french support. Install More Locale 2 to get at least partial French support.

Rooting is quite easy. Just download a "root_by_javum.zip" file, and flash it via CMW. Nothing more, nothing less.

I got it rooted , I will post some revisions in the instructions soon

f) After updating, turn off phone, unplug and remove battery, reinsert battery and plug a phone. You should see a device “MediaTek Preloader USB VCOM (Android) (ComX)" in a “COM and LPT” section. If you see it, you are ready to go!

Hi, I've installed the driver (SP_Drivers_v1.5) in Step 2.. but couldnt find the 'Mediatek...' under 'COM and LPT'.. When I plug in the phone (turned off), it didnt show anything in the device manager..
what should I do next?

This is entirely on my own experience on win7 x64
2) Preparation for memory flashing:
a) Download this package and upack it as a whole somewhere in your computer:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/25344416/P7...te_utility.zip
alternative link: https://mega.co.nz/#!tFcFyAhJ!OInJjj...l9kDzv9y_3ukNg
b) Turn off your phone, unplug cable, remove battery. Insert the battery but DO NOT plug your cable or power on the phone.
c) Open your device manager in “windows/system”
d) Connect your phone by cable. A new device named “MT65xx Preloader” shall appear for about 3 seconds in a section “Unknown devices”.
e) Catch it with mouse and manually change the drivers to the ones located in “SP_Drivers_v1.5” folder of downloaded (unpacked) file.
f) After updating, turn off phone [the phone is already off], unplug and remove battery, reinsert battery and plug a phone. You should see a device “MediaTek Preloader USB VCOM (Android) (ComX)" in a “COM and LPT” section. If you see it, you are ready to go! The device display is also displayed for about 3seconds similar to the the previous one
- If you don’t see it, you did something wrong, most probably you were not fast enough in point e), retry from b)

4) S110_Pu_mod, CWM Recovery flashable, my modification of latest world ROM, shrinked, added More Locale and Xperia Launcher
Click to collapse
After all, i can use this rom using cwm mod recovery, but i think there s a bug since i cannot back up application using setting menu. Is it right ?
solved, have to install backup n restore apk

yes, I am using windows 7 x64 too.. it did show up under COM and LPT but only for a few sec.. then it disappears.. this means that I can proceed?
EDIT: I use windowx xp too, and its the same. only appears for a few sec. Rooted!

Confirmation & Questions
Hi,
i can confirm the same behaviour. I also managed to load the new driver but when I connect the device again the "MediaTek Preloader USB VCOM (Android) (ComX)" in a “COM and LPT” section" only shows a second or so and then it dissapears again. Just like furredd describes it.Not sure if this is ok.
Note: I can see the driver using USBDeview.
Another thing: I tried twice to download the "4) S110_Pu_mod, CWM Recovery flashable, my modification of latest world ROM, shrinked, added More Locale and Xperia Launcher" from Mega but the download stopped at ~65% both times.
I use windowx xp prof.
Any ideas?
Edit: One more thing: I have a phone from Etotalk with their Rooted ROM. Does this mean I can not pull this update through or how am i supposed to understand it?
Thanks

[9001][GUIDE][NOOBFRIENDLY]Starter-Guide[STOPPED]

I´m not responsible for what you do! This guide could “destroy” your phone if you do something different how it is explained!!!
I do not have any claim of fullness! If here should be any mistakes feel free to correct me!
Support is now stopped, read this post for more details...
Hi folks
I saw that here is missing a basic guide for our device, then I noticed that we have get a lot of new members, too!
This guide will be so noobfriendly that even my grandmother will understand it
I will try to answer here every question and I will add it then to the front page. I will answer very kindly, too! So feel free to ask everything =)
Please follow each step, don´t skip any step and do all exactly how I explain it...
Must haves:
Following things are must haves for every I9001 phone. In this guide I will explain how to get them on YOUR phone.
Most things will be installed automated by a installation of a custom rom, which is then more easily for you to get them!
Busybox
USB-Debugging
Clockworkmod
Root
Deodex
1. Basics:
About Roms:
What is a Rom:
The whole system of your phone is a rom. Windows 7 is a Rom for your computer (just a metaphor)
A rom contains different sections:
boot.img (kernel)
system.img (the main-system)
recovery.img (recovery mode)cache.img (caches)
Stock-Rom:
The Stock-Rom is the system which Samsung is delivering to the store. Samsung built this rom from the google sources and changed android they way they like it.
The stock-rom is the original rom of your phone!
You can find a lot of stock roms in the Index or just here in the dev forum
Custom-Rom:
A custom-rom is a modified rom which has different improvements. The base can be of a stock rom or it is an AOSP-Rom.
You can find a lot of custom roms here in the forum or just visit the Index
AOSP-Rom:
This is a Custom-Rom too, but the base is built from the sources of Google. The advantages are that there is not any garbage, it is more stable and it has more functionality. But the disadvantage is that it is hard to build and it will take long time for being bug free.
Basic knowledge:
What are Tweaks:
Tweaks are changing values in the system. Tweaks ussually improves the whole system
Kernel Description:
The Kernel is a piece of software which controls everything on your system.
The kernel controls the cpu with the governor. The governor decides the behavior of the cpu, like when the cpu has to be on the max. clock or when it has to be on the min. clock.
The kernel controls the ram and sd-card behavior with the scheduler. The scheduler decides how long a process should be saved in the ram and it influences the sd-card read and write speed.
The kernel controls the voltage of the battery on a specific cpu clock, too
The kernels which are offered here are oc (overclocked), UV (under volted), they add new governors and scheduler and the add the init.d support.
Init.d makes it possible to launch tweaks at the boot of the phone if they are in the init.d folder (system/etc/init.d).
A description of governors and scheduler are here and here
You can change the governor and scheduler with AnTuTu CPU Master
I recommend strongly to change the kernel because it improves your system immense, but in the other hand the car cardle will not work anymore with these kernels.
Only Stock Kernel and the stock kernel with init.d support the car cardle
At the moment are following kernel popular:
Skyhigh
Feamod
Vitality
Stock Kernel with Init.d - KQ7
Bloadware:
Bloadware are apps which nobody needs. Samsung implement them in their stock roms. When they are removed there will be more free space for other apps and more ram will be available
Brick:
Your phone is bricked when it can not boot anymore.
There are two types bricks
Soft Brick:
When your phone is soft bricked it can cause a boot-loop (the reboot-procedure begins always as new) or your phone will stick in the boot.
Soft bricks happen often by installing themes over a odex system (more informations in the 8. point)
You can solve soft bricks easily by installing a new rom with the clockworkmod or with odin (more informations in the 2. point)
Hard Brick:
When your phone is hard bricked it will not do anything. You will not be able to enter the clockworkmod or the downloadmode!
Hard bricks often happen by flashing roms of other phones or flashing bad custom roms (at the moment there aren´t any "bad" customs roms for our device)
You can solve SOMETIMES a hard brick with a JTAG. If the jtag could not help you have to send your phone to samsung for a expensive repair
Batterly life:
You can improve your battery life by changing the governor, the scheduler, turning off gps, bluetooth, wi-fi and by changing the brightness of your display.
You can improve your battery life too by changing the max. and min. clock of your cpu. But here is to say you have to find your personal middle way of performance and battery life settings.
Wipe:
A wipe is when you delete everything on your phone. It has the same meaning as "format" and "delete". How to wipe your phone is explained in the 6. point
Other Settings:
Animations:
In the default settings the animations are diactivated, but they look so nice that you have to activate them . If you want for example the old screen off you have to activate the animations.
How to activate animations:
Enter in the settings of your smart-phone
Select "display"
Choose "animation"
Choose "all animations"
Wi-Fi troubles:
If you face Wi-Fi troubles could this method solve your problems
Enter in the settings of your phone
Choose "Wirelless and network"
Choose "Wi-Fi settings"
Press the Menu-Button
Choose "Advanced"
Activate "use static IP"
Busybox:
Busybox is a collection of commands and functions for every android phone. Some custom roms will even not be working properly without Busybox! Normally Busybox will be installed automated by a custom rom installation , but if not you can install the .zip in the post #3 through Clockworkmod (detailed explanation for installing .zips with clockworkmod are in the 2. Point)
USB Settings:
What is USB-Debugging:
USB-Debugging is a function of Android. If it is enabled you will be able to use adb. Make sure that you have it always enabled because you will need it often and by the way it does not have any disadvantages
What is adb:
adb means: Android Debug Bridge
With adb you can change/edit/install files on your phone with your computer. Broodplank1337 made a big configurator which can do incredible things!
Configurator
How To use Adb is explained in this Tutorial
How to enable USB-Debugging:
Enter in the settings of your phone
Enter in the “Applications”
Enter in “Development”
Enable “USB-Debugging”
How to copy files on your internal SD card:
Make sure that you´ve got at least installed the USB Driver if not download them from the download section (if you have installed kies you got the USB Driver installed too)
Make sure that you have enabled USB-Debugging in the Settings of your phone
Connect now your device with your computer with the usb-wire
Now just pull down your status bar and select the usb notification then you choose "connect storage to PC"
Now you can copy files on your internal SD-card
Your internal SD-card is the storage with 5 GB
2. How to install every Rom/Kernel/Recovery/Mod:
General
If it is a zip file you have to install it with Clockworkmod Recovery. If it is a .tar or a .tar.md5 file you have to install it with Odin!
Odin:
What is Odin:
Odin is a program on windows where you can install custom roms and kernel during your phone is in the Download Mode. To use Odin you need the AriesVE.ops and the kernel or custom rom you want to install.
What is the Download Mode:
When you phone is in the Download Mode you will be able to flash kernel, roms, new recovery modes with Odin. You can only exit the Download Mode by taking of the battery or when odin finished flashing!
How to get in the Download Mode:
Please turn off your phone and wait until it is completely shut down
Press the Home-button + volume-down + power button until there is an android icon
(In post#2) is a Imagine which could help you)
Installing Custom Roms and Kernels with Odin
Download:
Odin
AriesVE
(downloadlinks are in post#3)

Click on "One Package" and select the .tar or .tar.md5 file
Put your phone in to the download mode
Connect your phone with the usb-wire
Press "Start" in Odin
Wait until your phone reboots automatically
(In post#2) is a Imagine which could help you)
Recovery-Mode:
What is the Recovery Mode:
The Recovery Mode is like the BIOS of your computer. There you can manage your phone easily. The Stock Recovery Mode does not have a lot of functions, because of this there were made new recovery mode by good devs. A better recovery mode is the clockworkmod
What is the clockworkmod:
The clockworkmod is actually the most popular recovery mode. At the moment it is the most stable one, too
Other expressions for "clockworkmod":
"CWM"
"Recovery Mode"
"feamod"
What are the differences between Stock-Recovery Mod and Clockworkmod:
With the stock Recovery Mod you can just make a Factory Reset and install simple zip files. You will not be able to install custom roms!
With the clockworkmod you can backup, restore and format your system and install any custom rom
Do I need the Clockworkmod:
Yes it is a must have, you will not be able to install any custom rom or other mods
How to get in the stock-Recovery Mode:
Please turn off your phone and wait until it is completely shut down
Press please the power + the volume up button for 10 seconds
When you see a Box with an android icon press once the menu button to be able to use it
How to navigate in stock Recovery Mode:
Navigating:
Volume Up/Down
Selecting:
Home-Button
How to install the Clockworkmod:

Now start Odin
Select as always AriesVE.ops as ops file
Then activate “one package” option in Odin and choose as “one package” “FeaModRecovery_1.2.tar.md5”
Press "Start" and wait until your phone reboots
How to get in the Clockworkmod:
Please turn off your phone and wait until it is completely shut down
Press please the power + the volume up button for 10 seconds
How to navigate in Clockworkmod:
Navigating:
Volume Up/Down
Selecting:
Menu-Button
Back:
Back-Button
What is "mounting":
If you mount something you will be able to edit/delete/add files to your system. Developer always recommend to mount /system before installing a mod, because if you don´t do it the mod will not be installed successfully
How can I mount /system:
Enter in the Clockworkmod
Choose "mounts and storage"
Choose "mount /system"
It works with /data , /cache , /efs , /emmc , /sdcard ,too
How to install Custom Roms/Kernel/Recovery/Mods with the Clockworkmod:
Put the zip file on your external-card in a folder (Do not put it in a folder with starting with a ".")
Enter in the Clockworkmod
Choose “install zip from sdcard”
Choose “choose zip from sdcard”
Choose the .zip file and install it
Reboot
3. Root:
What is a Root:
You can compare "Root" with the "admin" on your computer or with a “Jailbreak” for Apple products. If you have "root" you can modify all on your system. If you have installed root there will be no more borders.
Other expressions for "root":
"superuser""su"
What can I do exactly with a Root:
Firstly you can backup your apps (will explain this later more precise)
You can change the cpu frequency (cpu=processor an electronic circuit which executes computer programs)
You can run every app which needs root access
Does the root pay up:
Yes it does because it is the first border to cross for having the best of your phone
How to install Root with Clockworkmod:
Download the root from post#3
Put the root.zip on your external-sd-card in a folder (Do not put it in a folder with starting with a ".")
Enter the Clockworkmod
Choose "install zip from sdcard"
Choose "choose zip from sdcard"
Choose the root.zip and install it
Reboot your phone
How to install Root with stock Recovery:
Download the root from post#3
Put it on your internal SD card. Please just copy it on your SD-card and NOT in any folder
Enter in the stock Recovery Mod
Then you choose “apply update” and you choose the root.zip and install it
Reboot then your Phone by choosing “rebooting”
How to Unroot:
Download the "unroot.zip" from post#3
Put the .zip on your external-sdcard in a folder
Enter in the clockworkmod/stock recovery mode
Install it like you installed the root.zip
4. How to Backup:
There are two ways of backing up your data.
With Titanium Backup:
Titanium Backup is an app which will only backup your apps
Titanium Backup is a free app but I recommend only the pro version, because the free is too slow
Your backup will be saved on you internal-card in:
/titanium backup/
With Clockworkmod:
With the clockworkmod you can backup your apps and your whole system with all settings. I prefer this method because it is simple and secure...
How to Backup in CWM:
Enter the Clockworkmod
Select “backup and restore”
Select “backup” and enjoy your backup
Your backup will be saved on your external-card in:
/clockworkmod/backup/
5. Restore:
How to restore the whole system:
Enter the Clockworkmod
Select “backup and restore”
Select “restore” and choose the date of your backup
How to restore only apps:
Before restoring you should always format your device! How to format is explained in the next point!
Enter the Clockworkmod
Select “backup and restore”
Select “advanced restore”
Choose the date of the backup
Choose “data”
6. How to format:
Do this every time before flashing a stock- or custom-rom!
Attention!
You will delete everything on your phone! Your phone will not even be able to boot! Only Clockworkmod and the Download-Mode will be left! (Your SIM-Card will be untouched)
Please make sure that you saved only your backups on another device before formatting your phone (like on your computer)
This is the best method for using the full experience of every custom rom! I recommend this method because in the past a lot of users had issues with custom roms. They had installed a lot of different custom roms before and they didn´t format their phone correctly before flashing the new rom. This caused a lot of problems
Enter in the Clockworkmod
Choose "advanced"
Choose "Wipe Dalvik Cache"
Go back to the main-menu by pressing the back button
Choose “Mounts and storage”
Select all after all
Format /system
Format /cache
Format /data
(Format /emmc)
(Format /sdcard)
Formating "emmc" and "sdcard" is not a duty! You will need it if you installed a mod on your internal or in your external card
7. Warranty:
What makes your warranty dissapear:
Root
Clockworkmod
Custom-Rom
Other Kernel
How to restore your warranty:
You can restore warranty easily, you have just to flash the stock-rom which was on your device when you bought it. If you not remember which stock-rom you had installed as first visit Sammobile and search for I9001. Download the stock-rom which is for your country, flash it with odin and you will have your warranty back
(For using the Search you have to Regist on Sammobile)
8. Deodex(ADVANCED):
What is Odex:
All apps are at the beginning odexed. Odex means that the apps are actually "packed". When the apps are odex it is more difficult to modify them.
What is Deodex:
Deodexing apps means that you are "unpacking" the apps. When you deodex your apps you will be able to modify them. A deodexed Rom belongs to basic because you will need it for installing a theme or other mods.
Deodexing your rom will not cause any disadvantages
How to Deodex:
Requierments:
Root
Busybox
Java SDK (Download is in the post #3)
USB-Debugging
xUltimate-v2.3.3 (Download is in the post #3)
Connect your phone with the usb-wire
Extract xUltimate-v2.3.3.zip
Start the "Test.exe"
Following must be in the command prompt:
adb = PASS!
odex = PASS!
zip = PASS!
busybox = PASS!
java = PASS!
temp = PASS!
deodex = SKIP!
redex = SKIP!
If something is different please do not deodex you phone because you will fail. If it all matches do following things:
Start the "Main.exe"
Press "1"
When it is finished press please "2"
Enter the folder "origi_app" and delete following files:
Maps.apk
Maps.odex
Phonesky.apk
Phonesky.odex
PlusOne.apk
PlusOne.odex
Enter again xUltimate-v2.3.3 and press please "3"
When it is finished press please "4"
After it is finished start the Deodex.bat (big thanks to nikagl for the commands)
After the automated reboot your phone should be successful deodexed
To check if youre phone is deodexed just run again the "Test.exe" and under the point "deodex" should be "PASS!" or under the point "odex" should be "FAIL!"

How To Connect both Storages at the same time on pc with CM9:
Original Post
So found an other solution where people were complainig off!
First big thanks to Campi1995 who tested it as well
So the problem was following:
people were not able to connect two storages at the same time with their computer and I found an interesting app in the market, it is called Multi Mount Sd-card
For mounting both storages do follwing things:
Install Multi Mount Sd-card
Add the Widget off the app on any homescreen (in the app drawer, you can add widget)
Connect your phone with the usb-wire
Click once at the widget (it should get green)
and BUUUUFF both is connected to the pc
Remember the pay app is better, but the free one works as well.

Hm.. don't you need exactly the same ROM version of what your phone was before flashing or what your carrier offered you with KIES?

some people buy their phone as sim unlocked (not carrier related) , and those are usually shipped with one of the stock roms available on sammobile . for the rest of us who got their phone with carrier bloatware, we need to have a backup of that stock rom.
as for this thread, although i support any help for people who are starting with android or are new to the device, but i pretty much don't see something that is not covered in the wiki. (not hating, just saying).
You enter STOCK RECOVERY by pressing vol up and power, and then MENU, not just vol up + power

Software You Will Use/Need (depending on your root method):
http://support.acer.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=4318 ← Acer USB Drivers
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html ← Android SDK
General Information:
First off, this was never made adequately clear for new users (without going through a hundred different posts with hundreds of replies): You will be using the Android SDK and the Windows Command Prompt. When installing the Android SDK, change the directory to something easy like C:\SDK because you will be typing it a lot. The directory in that folder you will be using exclusively for this process is the “platform-tools” directory. This is where adb and fastboot are found.
In addition, you will need to activate ADB Debugging on your tablet. This is found by going to Settings -> Developer Options -> USB Debugging. If this isn’t done, you will get nothing accomplished. Yes, you will need to have your tablet connected through USB to your PC for this to work. I know there are other ways, but I’m writing this with brand new users in mind.
After you’ve got that set, you should go ahead and install the Acer USB Drivers. None of my computers could properly identify the tablet without the drivers. Speaking of quirks, 64GB microsd cards are not generally very friendly with CM10 or CWM even when formatted as Fat32. There are lots of issues I can’t find a workaround to. Consider using a 32GB until the kinks are worked out.
I’m also assuming you are currently running the JB OTA that was pushed worldwide in October 2012. If you are not, then there are a few extra steps when installing IconiaN. Although I compiled the instructions you’re reading, I had nothing to do with anything else. In fact, I didn’t write the codes used to install things through the command prompt….I just compiled all the information into one easy-ish to follow paper.
As usual, if anything in this causes a brick to your tablet, it was your decision. I’m just providing the information that has worked for me (repeatedly). Also, as I’m not a developer, nor am I very handy with editing files or trouble shooting things without actually handling them…….Ask your specific questions directly to those people in charge of the files (pawitp, Vorbeth, Moscow Desire, meier2009, odiv81 and alx5962). They’re the gurus at this..I am a plebe in their shadow.
TL;DR:
Install Android SDK to an easy directory.
Install Acer USB Drivers.
Unlock Your Bootloader: (codes from alx5962)
1. Open a command prompt in windows and navigate to the directory where adb is stored. For the sake of conversation, I’m going to call it “C:\SDK\platform-tools”
2. Plug your tablet into your computer through USB. It should automatically mount because you’ve installed the Acer USB Drivers and didn’t skip that step above. J
3. At the command prompt, enter the following:
Code:
adb reboot-bootloader
-- Allow the device to reboot.
4. Type Code:
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
5. Press the + Volume button to select Unlock then - Volume button to confirm.
6. Restart :
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
----- I had issues on step 6. I tried that, and it rebooted to the bootloader screen. To be on the safe side without hard rebooting (not knowing what was going on), I used the command from Step 3. to reboot. This works for ICS and for JB bootloaders, I confirm I used the above steps on both.-----7. Confirmation of your unlocked status will be seen in the upper left hand corner of the screen.
Install Clockwork Mod Recovery: (all work & codes from pawitp)
Somehow I wasn’t able to install this properly (permanently) until last night (11/09/12). I’m still not entirely sure what I did differently, but I’ll try to document it here. The safest version of CWM is 6.0.1.5. Don’t attempt anything without that version or better. I’ve heard that at this time the touch version isn’t working properly, so be sure to download the original style CWM.
To navigate CWM, the following bit of information will come in handy (especially if you’ve never used it before.) Use the ‘Vol-‘ and ‘Vol+’ buttons to navigate up and down and the ‘Power’ button to select your choice. When you have made a choice it will sometimes give a screen with a ton of “NO” options with only one “YES” option (usually near the bottom). Like any good video game, if you scroll upwards, you can get to the bottom of the screen faster.
1. Place the CWM file you downloaded into your “platform-tools” directory. For the sake of being easy to install, I changed the file name to ‘recovery.img.’
2. Open a command prompt in windows and navigate to the directory where adb is stored. For the sake of conversation, I’m going to call it “C:\SDK\platform-tools”
3. Plug your tablet into your computer through USB.
4. At the command prompt, enter the following:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
5. At this point, you have flashed CWM to the system, BUT you will now need to boot into CWM using :
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
The caveat here is that you will need to install either a custom ROM or unencumbered boot.img (kernel) NOW. If you do not install one, flashing CWM was pointless because stock recovery will overwrite it at next reboot. When prompted at reboot (leaving CWM after flashing a ROM) you should choose to keep CWM. This was sort of a miscommunication between the devs and myself, but meier2009 and Moscow Desire cleared it up.
-----Step 5. does NOT install recovery, but forces your system to boot into CWM by pushing the file to your A700 from your ‘platform-tools’ directory.-----
For Future Reference: Enter recovery…(JB):
a. With system powered off, press and hold ‘Power’ and ‘Vol -‘
b. When the system vibrates, release the ‘Power’ button.
c. When the system vibrates a second time, slide your finger from ‘Vol-‘ to ‘Vol+.”
d. When the system vibrates a third time, release that button.
Install pawitp’s CM10.1 OR IcOdiv (A701): (all work & codes from pawitp)
Download the CM10 nightly from the official Cyanogen page and grab the Google Apps file (optional, but you won’t have market without it) listed in the links section. Despite what people say, I have always been unable to install from my external SD card. Instead, I save the zip files to the root/main directory of the internal SD. Save BOTH FILES to internal SD at this time. This has always worked for me, but your mileage may vary. You do this at your own risk, blah, blah, blah.
1. Boot your A700 into CWM using the steps outlined in Step 5. (or 6) from “Install Clockwork Recovery Mod.”
2. Backup your system by navigating to “backup and restore” by using the ‘Vol-‘ and ‘Vol+’ buttons to navigate up and down and the ‘Power’ button to select your choice.
3. At this point, there are two options for you. “backup” and “backup to external_sdcard”…. I have never been able to mount my 64GB Fat32 external_sd in CWM. Try a smaller card if you have one available (I don’t). If you can backup to external, that is probably necessary when coming from stock. I would only backup to internal if you are just updating from an older nightly or previous rom.
4. On the main screen, assuming you’re coming from stock JB or ICS, you will need to do a couple of wipes. I’m positive the first is necessary, and have read in other parts of threads and other forums that the other two wipes are needed, but as they’re both called “cache,” I went ahead and did both (with no ill effects).
Select “wipe data/factory reset”
Select “wipe cache partition”
Select “advanced” and navigate to “wipe dalvik cache”
Go back to the main menu.
5. From the main menu, select “install zip from sdcard”.
6. Select “choose zip from sdcard” and scroll down to the CM10 zip file. Press the ‘Power’ button to select and confirm.
After this has successfully installed, you can choose to install Google Apps or not. I’m assuming you will want to install them because…well…who doesn’t?
7. To install Google Apps, follow Steps 3 and 4 from above, but this time you will choose the gapps zip file instead of the CM10 zip.
8. Reboot Device & Enjoy well sorted Jelly Beans.
Install iconiaN: (all work & codes from Vorbeth)
At the moment this is my favorite. It is one version number (4.1.1) behind CM10 (4.1.2), BUT it is compatible with my SD card, and is similar to the stock experience …. only faster and without the bloatware. The only reason it is second in this guide is because of the alphabet (C before I & P before V).
The latest updates to the ROM bring the latest GAPPS and firmware. meier2009’s 4Way Reboot Mod is also included (and rocks).
1. Boot your A700 into CWM.
2. Follow Steps 2-6 from above if coming from stock JB (or CM10, or CoolOne700) with the exception that you’re installing the iconiaN zip (not CM10, duh). Also, iconiaN comes with v4.2 Google Apps pre-installed, so no need for Step 7.
-----2.a. If coming from stock ICS, you will need to install the Jelly Bean Firmware (Found in the Aroma Setup of the ROM)
3. If coming from an older version of iconiaN, you shouldn’t need to do the wipes, but go ahead and do the backup just to be safe.
4. Reboot Device & Enjoy well sorted Jelly Beans.
-----On a side note, I went ahead and installed BusyBox (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox) not sure if this was necessary, but I am suffering no ill effects from having it running on my tablet. -----
Install Vorbeth's OC GPU Kernel: (all work & codes from Vorbeth)
This is a custom kernel (as of this writing available only for the A700) that overclocks the Tegra 3 from 1.3Ghz to 1.5Ghz. There has been a noted improvement in gaming performance using this kernel.
1. Boot your A700 into CWM.
2. From the main menu, select “install zip from sdcard”.
3. Select “choose zip from sdcard” and scroll down to the iconiaN Kernel zip file. Press the ‘Power’ button to select and confirm.
4. Reboot Device PLAY SOME GAMES! WEE!
Install Vorbeth’s EasyRoot: (all work & codes from Vorbeth)
If for some reason you’re happy with stock and just want a very simple way to ROOT, then this is for you. Using this kernel will cause OTA to stop working (or you will have to edit the updater-script) and remove all the file checks. The latest update has made all previous instructions null, and it is now exceedingly easy to install ROOT on your A700. Awesome! Still, this does require an unlocked bootloader.
1. Download and extract the EasyRoot ZIP on your computer.
2. Locate and double click the file 'easyroot.bat'.
3. Follow all onscreen instructions.
4. Profit.
CoolOne700: (all work & codes from meier2009)
This is the new kid on the block. meier2009 has included three different install options in this ROM including Full (rooted stock), Small (all the Acer bloatware removed), and Custom (Choose what you want.) It’s definitely one to keep an eye on. Custom install is very handy. He’s also got his 4Way Reboot Mod which adds all our favorite reboot/recovery features. Sweet! Also, BusyBox and SuperSU are included on install, so you don’t need to worry about that.
1. Boot your A700 into CWM.
2. Follow Steps 2-6 from CM10 Install if coming from stock JB (or CM10, or iconiaN) with the exception that you’re installing the CoolOne700 zip (not CM10, duh). Also, CoolOne700 comes with Google Apps pre-installed, so no need for Step 7.
-----2. a. If coming from stock ICS, you will need to install the Jelly Bean Firmware (Found in the Aroma Setup of the ROM)
3. If updating from an older version of CoolOne700, you won’t need to do any of the wipes, but it is always a great idea to do the backup.
4. Reboot Device & Enjoy well sorted Jelly Beans.
Code:
6. If upon reboot, you hit the old system recovery, you will need to reflash the recovery.img OR just work around it by doing:
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
-----Step 6. does NOT install recovery, but forces your system to boot into CWM by pushing the file to your A700 from your ‘platform-tools’ directory. I had to use this method to install CM10 because I was never able to get CWM to install. Your luck may be different.-----
THAT´s the Trick my Friend !
Install recovery with
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
AND THEN
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
Install any ROM and if you´re rebooting and asked to FIX Recovery, answer YES, then it will be leaved there !!!
With this way your also able to start CWM Recovery temporary
only use
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
then CWM will start, you can flash anything and after that CWM is gone, because the Stock Recovery is always inside the Recovery Partition
Makes sense then how I finally ended up with CWM actually installed on my tablet. Were the original instructions from pawitp mistaken, or just incomplete?

Added more info last night and have now included the AOSP 4.2 to the links. Keepin' this bumped & updated.
Thanks for posting this excellent How To! I used it to install CM10.
I can confirm the backup to external backup functionality does work with a 8 GB MicroSDHC card. One thing you could do to bypass the external vs internal SD card discussion is to use sideloading. I used it to both install CM10 and the Google Apps and it works nicely. Just select Update through sideload in CWM and then enter 'adb sideload <filename>' on the command line and everything works nicely.
Also for the real beginner you could may be suggest backing up all user applications using Titanium Backup in order to easily restore them after flashing a mod.
Bumping thread back near the top. Lots of people got an A700 for the holiday and it seems many of them are bricking or at least screwing things up using outdated methods or strange new forms of CWM from other forums.
Also, thanks for the info, SanjuroE. Appreciated, and I can honestly say I never knew how to do the sideloading thing. I didn't actually realize that was what it was as on my old tablet (three years ago) sideloading was always in reference to installing from the external SD.
This guide was awesome. Many thanks for this.
I flashed CWM 6.0.3.1 via fastboot.
After that I tried fastboot boot recovery.img but it doesn't work.

Hi,
I have the same issue and it took me hours to even find a driver from ACER. But even after the installation I cannot get the tablet to work stable. I installed general MTP drivers which gave me access to the "adb reboot-bootloader" command but during the reboot the tablet gets stuck on the Acer logo screen and does not boot into the bootloader. I have to unplug the tablet and only then I get the white text in the top left corner of the screen saying "starting Fastboot USB download protocol". But that is it. I assume that fastboot would use the Acer drivers to access the tablet but I don't have any for windows 10.
My question: Could somebody post drivers for Windows 10 for the A700/A701?
Thanks

Found this online. *****this is not my work****** All credit goes to the author quattrodevelopment.blogspot.com
Here is a step by step with roms included for the 4.5 quattro Not the HD or 5.7 HD maybe soon.
Disclaimer: These ROMs/Recoveries are only intended for the BLU Quattro 4.5, or the K-Touch v9(which is the chinese version) These WILL NOT work on the 4.5HD or 5.7HD devices(I will release ROMs/Recoveries specifically for your device at a later time)
Drivers: https://copy.com/BUMmsS9rhLJe
English Recovery: https://copy.com/XZxTDht2lQiz
Gapps(4.2) https://copy.com/utkbZgwRpsVB
Gapps(4.1) https://copy.com/pSd8SsqU9pdI
ROMs With Less Bugs: MIUI v5 (4.1) https://copy.com/sbmcN6PHwFfi CM/AOKP Hybrid? JB (4.1) https://copy.com/VeLz1VLbkNNI Shendu ROM 4.1(Modified/Tweaked by me) https://copy.com/NwiFnlO8JAek
ROMs With More Bugs: Cyanogenmod 10.1 (4.2) https://copy.com/8kt2EAU2ll8y
1- Download the drivers from link posted above, and extract it to the folder of your desire. Now turn the phone off, and hold Vol+ (volume up button) and Power button at the same time until you see a green screen, then release both buttons immediately. You should now be in APX mode(nvflash) it will be a black screen
2- Connect phone to computer via usb cable. Now you should get a pop-up window about installing drivers, you're going to want to choose to browse computer for driver software manually. Then choose let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer, and click have disk. Now you're going to browse to the location where you extracted the drivers to, and click on it(Ignore warning if it pops up, and choose install)
3- Assuming everything went as planned, now download the recovery and extract it to the location you desire(must be in a directory that you can issue adb commands from) inside of that folder, locate a file named recovery.bat. Double click on that file and a command prompt with a bunch of chinese pops up. Give it a second and press enter, it will go through the process and flash a recovery onto your phone
4- After everything is done, hold down the power button for about ten seconds(until the device powers off) Power the device back on normally, and download the ROM/ROMs if you haven't already and place them on the internal or external sd card(your choice) With device connected to pc, open command prompt and type in "adb reboot recovery" (without quotes) and the device will boot into recovery mode
5- Now that we have an English recovery, the translations below aren't really needed. However, I'm going to leave them up for a few days, just until everybody can transition to the English recovery. They will be deleted after that!
Recovery Main Menu: -Reboot -Install from SD card -Wipe Data/Factory Reset -Wipe Cache -Backup&Restore -Mount/Format -Advanced
Install From SD Card Menu: -Install zip from external SD -Apply update.zip -Unknown* -Install zip from internal SD
Backup&Restore Menu: -Backup -Restore -The rest are unknown*
Advanced Menu: -Reboot Recovery -Wipe Dalvik Cache -The rest are unknown*
To install ROM- In recovery mode, Factory Reset/Wipe Cache/Wipe Dalvik Cache. Then choose install zip from sd card(then choose internal or external and locate the ROM you want to install) After that you need to do the same thing to install the gapps package(you need the gapps package for google apps to function) once all is done, reboot and wait(it takes a while to boot the first time after flashing new ROMs, it has to rebuild the Dalvik cache)
NOTE: In case you aren't familiar with flashing ROMs, once you click on something( "backup" for example) a menu pops up pretty much asing you if you're sure you want to do that. It will have a bunch of lines of the same thing(which is no) and then one of the lines will have a bunch of writing beside it(which means yes). Also BEFORE you flash any ROMs, make sure you factory reset/wipe cache/and wipe dalvik cache, then you can flash the ROM and gapps package
*These will be updated regularly, as I discover what they are **More ROMs to come!
Internal Memory
The "BLU Quattro 4.5" has 4GB internal memory partitioned into 0.98GB for ROM and apps and an internal usb-memory of 1.63GB.
Is it possible to merge or resize the partitions?
I have 16GB external SD so the 1.63GB internal reserved usb-memory is useless and I still having trouble out of space in primary partition.
Thanks and sorry my english =/

Recovery + Root My experience
Hello... I got my BLU Quattro 4.5 (D440) a while back, didn't fuzz with it much right off. The Stock ROM was sluggish at best thought there was even an issue with the Digitizer/screen. But this thread was extremely helpful. I am now running Shendu ROM 4.1.2 one of the suggested ROM's above. I tried the other 2 first and they were mostly in Chineese and I had an especially hard time getting them switched over to English. Either way onward to the point. I have put together a few helpful tips-tricks for my experience with this phone and its phoenix transition to an awesome handset. Thats right now this is my daily driver and I love it! See below hope its helpful.
BLU Quattro 4.5 (440D) GSM Recovery+Root
These steps for this phone only!! Not responsible for any issues.
1. download ROM's, Recovery, & Driver from XDA (this thread)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2327417
2. Enable USB Debugging! Go into Apps-Settings-DevOptions - Check box for USB Debug
3. Have original USB cord if handy! I tried with a Samsung OEM cable but no luck getting drivers to stick. Use original is best. (If you have one.)
Plug in USB Cord to PC then Phone and see if windows detects drivers. let it. It wont get the ones u need later, but what it does find is for USB storage. (you can move over your ROM's/Gapps to storage, downloads folder is a good spot).
4. Go to... http://junefabrics.com/android/downloadold.php to get pdanet software. Install it and it will give i the right drivers for ADB support. I used 4.01 to match the android version currently on my phone.
5. Extract the Driver provided from XDA. Put it in a folder with the ADB commands. Or you can get it all here... http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/GalaxyNexus/rooting/GalaxyNexusRootNew.zipn <-- I know this isn't for BLU but, if you extract this to a folder, and also add the drivers extracted to it as well this works! I've done it.
6. Extract the English Recovery to the same folder.
7. Turn off your phone. Hold down Vol up and Power button for about 5-9 seconds. Once you see a green screen let go of both. Screen may flicker then go black but the icons at the bottom will stay lit. You are now in APX mode (nvflash) mode. (as stated above in original post)
8. Check your Win 7 PC device manager. For a Phone device with ADB. If you you may need to update driver with the one that came from XDA, but the PDANet software should make it work.
8. Go to the folder and find Recovery.bat file (may have Chinese in file name. Double click and a command prompt window will pop up with a bunch of unknown characters, wait 5 sec then hit enter. The batch file should take of pushing the necessary recovery through ADB to the phone. It will error if it can't.
9. If completes OK. Push power for 7-9 seconds to power off the phone. Hit power like normal to turn it back on. It will boot up like normal (or it should).
10. USB is still connected this whole time and you can open a command prompt window. Navigate to the folder you placed the Recovery into. Something like user/username/desktop/BLU/recovery..etc)
Type ADB devices....it should show you that is is connected to your device. Then type " adb reboot recovery " and the device should reboot, give it some time.
11. Once in recovery. Best to do a backup of the original ROM & system. that way you can get back into recovery if anything goes wrong and wipe out the problem by restoring and starting again.
After you backup === you can get into recovery without the command being typed in or even being connected to your PC.... By holding Vol up + Power till you see the green screen then let go of power but keep holding Vol up till you see the BLU Products boot screen then let go ===
Clockworkmod Recovery should be on your screen.
you can reboot phone now and get back to original with no changes. Or you can venture into the world of loading ROM's (There in your downloads folder if you saved them in Step 3)
ROM 101
BACKUP-BACKUP-BACKUP 1st thing once in Recovery ...can't stress enough how much of trouble you can keep yourself out of by keeping an original backup.
As I stated before the Shendu ROM + Gapps is running smooth and all features I've been trying are working flawlessly!! Thanks to original post for getting me going. Just thought I'd add my 2 Cents.
Ok, here are the BEST 2 ROMS for this Phone:
Android 4.0.4(close to vanilla) : MEGA
Cyanogenmod 10.2 (Android 4.3.1) : (some audio and video issues, in BETA version ) MEGA
Need to merge internal partitions ? (merge memories) this one really "resize" the partitions (first one 1,7GB, another one new size is 2Mb) the flash.cfg file you need to flash:
This phone dont have notificaion led, fixed with this app: MEGA (flash the botton menu buttons)

Yes, those roms (v5) are very slow. Just use the 4.0.4 stock.
I want to try the JB stock, but i can´t find the official one anywhere.
Blu quattro 4.5 official rom to download, after you delete the bloatware and put a nice and clean theme you´ll get a nice speed.

You can find the rom on google plus under BLU Products Development search for the model!

APPS taht can be remover (thanx navin_n)
If you have already Rooted your device then you can easily uninstall the system apps using "Root Uninstallers" available in Google Play.
However, for me , i prefer to use Root Explorer and delete the apps from system folder. The following apps are safe to delete but still i advise you to backup the files before deleting. If you use Root Explorer, make sure to change attribute of the system folder from Read Only (R/O) to Read Write (R/W) when deleting.
Be ware you make it on your own!! If there is also odex file, delete them too!!!
APPs that can be deleted:
folder --> /system/app
nubia_account.apk - only if you log in in nubia account (maybe you need this to use themes)

Hi,
there ar ea lot of Chinese phones, this phone is ment to be sell china only.
There are many forums but in Chinese.
I wrote a little review on gizchina.cz (is in Czech language,so use google translator)
TIP
For new users i recommend do this:
-boot your phone and see vhich version of formware you have (latest at this time is 0.50).
-If you have 0.44, then go to dialer and dial ##36. You get to the menu where you can select which server will be used for updates (at this time is 0.50 only for few people for feedback). then go to ybout phone and tap serach for updates and you get the update.
-after update is installed, go to about phone and tap 5times "build number" line , go back and go to "more" and "developer option" and turn on usb debugging.
-launch my root.bat, select root your phone and th ephone will reboot to bootloader and will be rooted.
-now you can install custom recovery (from my bat.file) it is bilangual CWM 6.0.4.9 recovery. Everything works fine as i used it.
-now after root and cwm recovery installed, make backup of your 0.50 rom and then you can proceed to delete bloatware (a lot of bloatware).
for rotted phones with CWM recovery:
if you want to make update from ZTE OTA, you have to load original recovery, the one in my package is not functional with update to 0.50 and above, so you have to flash from CWM recovery this package, then reboot and get the proper stock recovery, which will be functional with the update 0.44-0.50 and later.

Thanks for the info! I'm currently updating to 0.5 and will let you know if I manage to root it too.
I`ve read the review and mine phone too has the squeaky back cover. It started squeaky after just few back panel removals. This is not a concern for me, but I wanted to ask you something else: How is you call quality? When I do calls the other side can hear me perfectly but the sound through my ear speaker is muffled and not very clear. Increasing the volume make it even worse. Do you experience such an issue?
-the back cover is really squeaky (i allready ordered another one)
-I am very happy vith the call quality. I had a nexus s whos volume vas up to 100%. Now i am about 60% and everything is loud and clear as i can hear
root and installing cwm is like a charm..i made it in the las 2 weeks (as i own the phone) about 10times
one Question: If you reboot the device do you also have the message "android is upgrading" every time no matter what you do or not do with the system?

- I tried updating to 0.5 both through FOTA and with direclty downloaded update from the chinese official site to the sd card, but I always get some error (forgot what it was), will try tomorrow once again.
- My apps are upgrade after each reboot too. I was hoping that 0.5 will fix this issue, but It seems this is not the case.
- I'm on the hunt for a new back cover too, but I will wait for the official blue ones Share your thoughts on the one you purchased after a few days of usage
My only problem with the phone I experience is the bad incoming sound quality during calls. I will have try another sim card.
ps: boy this phone is a beauty

Hi, can you please tell the name of chinese official site for our phone? thanks!
SITES IN cHINESE LANGUAGE
Hello,
so there are many sites. To see attachments you have to register to the sites, which is a little bit tricky due to instatnt need of translation in the registration process, but it can be done.
official with a lot of new information also from ZTE service:ztehn.com
the best for custom ROM and Recovery (development):anzhi.com
to see anzhi.com you need to add two adress in your windows hosts file see here
also some good information can be found here on myzte.cn
another tip
-If you get the "android is upgrading" on every boot, then you have to uninstall titanium backup, reboot, wait 3 minutes and let the system settle down, then install titanium again, reboot, and its done.
-if you want to restore WIFI access point and passwords form Titanium Backup, use backup from tar file, not from XML!!!
Waiting on a custom rom
Hello everyone,
I used the method I found at needrom.
It did the trick; the device was rooted, gapps installed, an multilangual.
But I didn't manage to install the latest update (50). I thought it was because the device was rooted, so I removed root, whitout succes, I am still not able to install the update.
Also I think the contact manager is buggy; newly added contacts dissapear after rebooting the device, it doesn't matter if I sync the device. I have to import my contacts from my SD card every time this happens.
So, I hope there comes a good custom rom for this device with this excellent hardware! I have Miui unofficiall on my Xiaomi Mi2s, it works like a charm. I hope soon this device appears on the list one of these days
update
-if you installed the ROm from needrom, i think you cannot upgrade to 0.50.
-on www.ztehn.com you can download the full 0.50 rom (only english and chinese language) this rom you can flash.
-contacts: If you are in contacts, press "more" and "advanced" and check the "default storage" it must be set to your google account. Then go back and check "display settings" and check which accounts are to show in contact list.
I had same problem and the problem was, that all new contact automaticly save to local storage and i have the local storage unchecked to display..so i havent seen my newly added contacts!!!
I have same issue
I have same isse. I dont hear anyone. But everyone hear me. i think that built in speaker doesnt work.

General guide of Mi4C [flash, bootloader, MIUI] +IN CONSTRUCTION

First of all, sorry for publishing an uncomplete guide, im traslating my own full spanish guide and at the same time making it more complete and better, and i decided to do it this way, publishing progressively
/////////////////////////////////////////
SECTION 1: Android argot summary
I put this link here so any new user in the Android rooting/flashing world can learn the classic words used
http://www.talkandroid.com/guides/beginner/android-rom-and-rooting-dictionary-for-beginners/
Note: in bootloader it says that the phone comes locked, which in our case usually is not the case, but anyway you can know if your phone is locked just by trying to get into the fastboot mode, if you can't get into it, its locked.
An Android phone's disk is virtually splitted in several partitions, like a computer, but not exactly the same because even when your phone has a lot of partitions, you will only see one if you didn't rooted your phone, or two if you did, and the partition where you have your photos and the rest of your personal downloaded things is named sdcard (yes, is a legacy of Android, even when we don't have sdcard), or even in some ROMs is called userdata or something like that; another partition is system, where the ROM itself is, is like the installation of Windows; another is data, where the config files of the apps are stored when you start using them; another is cache, where the cache of the apps are (you can think of it like the apps are compressed always, and to run faster they descompress themselves in that partition), and there are two of those partitions: dalvik cache and cache; also bootloader, which is like the BIOS of the computer, is the most basic program that makes possible the phone to boot, and also it is not possible to edit it, it is not writable, it is this way so that you wont never be able to hardbrick your phone (which means that you can literally drop your beautiful phone into the trash, no way of fixing it), like it was in older phones, and also in this partition you also have the fastboot mode, which i'll explain later; and the last one im explaining (there are more but you probably wont never know about them) is recovery, where there is installed the recovery, and what is recovery? is a tool which is by itself an entire operating system, but made specifically for "developing" purposes, mainly for flashing ROMs and making backups of the entire partitions. We have two recoverys for Mi4C, the Mi Recovery, which comes by default with your phone, and is very limited, mainly you can only flash Xiaomi's official ROMs, and the TWRP recovery, which is the absolutely most popular recovery, and strongly suggested to use, no disadvantages at all. Also know that, like in Windows you can't format the very own Windows partition and you must use and external tool, which would be the Windows installation CD program or something like that, here we have the recovery, you can't flash or wipe using Android, you must be in the recovery mode.
So as I said, the bootloader is readable only by security, and it includes the fastboot tool, so you must know to lost the fear of this world, that YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO HARDBRICK YOUR PHONE, you will always have fastboot to reflash a complete Android ROM (which requires a computer and a fastboot ROM, which is different than a flashable ROM. You will use a fastboot ROM in the first flashing tutorial, more bellow)
What is Fastboot? Basically is a tool which acts like a server in the phone, and as a client in the computer, and is made mainly to make basic things to the phone, like flashing partition images (included in the fastboot ROMs, extension of each one is .img) or read the locking status of the bootloader.
What is a locked bootloader? In our phone, is a bootloader that only allows you to flash official xiaomi roms, but as xiaomi don't offer a global version of miui for our phone, the only official rom is the chinese one, which appart than having only english and chinese languages, is very bloated of chinese apps, so is very recommended to unlock the bootloader and flash any other rom of your desire.
How to access fastboot? First, shut down the phone; second, press at the same time the Power and the Vol - buttons for a few seconds, there should appear in the screen a Fastboot logo. Note that the phone may automatically shutdown if no connection is made with a fastboot client in a computer in about 10 seconds after entering fastboot mode
How to access recovery? First, shutdown the phone, then press at the same time power and vol+ for a few seconds
What is ADB? Is a tool that works the same way as fastboot (phone and computer connected), but instead of being in bootloader, it is inside of android, and instead of doing essential work for the phone, it does more practical things like transfer of files, but you will probably not use ADB at any time. Also, for transfering files you wont use ADB, which like Fastboot is a command line tool only, but you will use MTP, which is the media transfer protocol, the graphical way of transfering files, in your computer it will appear like a classical external drive, but in Windows the icon will be like an iPod.
Note before starting the flashing tutorial: go to Settings > (bottom) About phone and look at the MIUI version, MIUI version numeration is supposed to follow a date (the date of release) except the first number which could not be the year, it could be 5, 6 or 7, so a correct numeration would be for example 7.2.1.0 (there is always a 4º number which is always 0 if do remember well). The thing is that when you buy the phone to a reseller, is very usual that they flash their custom MIUI rom which comes with international language, its fine, but it also comes with spyware and adware everywhere. Those roms usually comes with a version numeration of strange repeated numbers, like 77. 87. 55. 99., remember that the first number always must be 5, 6 or 7. In case that you have preinstalled this rom, i suggest you strongly to follow the guide fully, including the clean flashing with fastboot rom
Note 2: you need to have the bootloader unlocked in order to continue, please read the unlock tutorial below
Note 3: this guide supposes you have Windows. If you have Linux or Mac, or you have any problem, please ask here
Note 4: for this guide we are going to use a Drive folder shared with a spanish mi4c community, so file names may contain spanish words but shouldn't be a problem. Sorry for the inconvenience, but it's for ease purposes. Drive link: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B3N1d6szT1RYWkNET0pEbWhud3c#list
SECTION 2: Flashing guide (part 1/2: cleaning)
We are going to flash the 7.1.4.0 fastboot ROM in order to update as much as we can all the firmware (drivers of usb, modem, camera...), clean all from the weird ROM of the reseller and all of that without locking the bootloader.
Please, charge your phone first to at least 50%. Also, this process will erase all your personal data in the phone, backup all you need before.
1. Download the Fastboot 7.1.4.0 ROM (for example, here https://drive.google.com/folderview...RUR3WkE&tid=0B3N1d6szT1RYWkNET0pEbWhud3c#list ) Also download the 2 other files from that link.
2. Go to the root directory of your computer drive, usually C:\ and create a new folder with a simple name without special characters, neither spaces (for example, flash) to avoid problems in the process (at the end of the guide you will be able to delete that folder).
3. Go into that folder and extract the ROM, you must be able to see a folder named images and files together (Note: maybe you could need 7-Zip to extract it)

4. Now Install the other 2 files you downloaded. Then, reboot the computer and poweroff the phone
5. Exec the MiFlash tool, copy the path of the folder (for example, C:\flash) and paste it in the MiFlash tool
6. Now go to advanced
7. Click on Browse for Fastboot Script and choose flash_all.bat (if you are not able to see the file extensions, you should enable the viewing of file extensions (google for it))
8. Now put the phone in Fastboot mode (being it powered off, press power and vol- at the same time for a few seconds until the Fastboot logo appears) Note: to exit this mode, just press power for a few seconds
9. Now connect the phone to the computer with the usb cable (adaptors may give problems) and press on Refresh in the MiFlash tool in order for the phone to appear in it
10. Press on Flash, wait for the green bar to finish (could last minutes, just wait, if error is shown, post it here, if more than 1 hour and nothing changes, maybe is the computer, maybe is the cable, maybe is your bad luck). Done this part of the guide

SECTION 3: Flashing guide (part 2/2: Flashing at last!)
1. (Downloading) Enter the Drive folder posted above and download the TWRP zip, the ROM of your desire (see below for reading more of every ROM), the google apps (MIUI already comes with preinstalled google apps, not needed in that case; also, you can download the google apps at opengapps.org and picking ARM64 and 6.0 android (or the version that the ROM you are choosing is, probably 6.0), and picking pico or nano is enough, comparison table here https://github.com/opengapps/opengapps/wiki/Package-Comparison ) and the supersu (only if you want root, anyway you can flash supersu at anytime without needing to wipe or anything, is easy). If you didn't do the part 1/2 and you need the Windows drivers, you can download it from the Drivers Windows folder, install it and reboot the computer.
1.1 (Uncompressing) Unzip the TWRP file in a sort path from the root folder, like for example in C:\TWRP (at the end of the guide you can delete this). You should see a file called recovery.bat (if you can't see extensions, google for enable it), it is for the step 3.
1.2 (Testing MTP) We will need to use MTP while we are in the recovery mode, so first let's test it in Android. While the phone is fully booted in Android and in the launcher screen (if starting for the first time, skip all the tutorial with whatever info), plug the phone to the computer, and in the phone swipe down the notifications bar, you should see a notification saying something of MTP or wired connection, activate MTP. Now in the computer, open My Computer and you should see Mi4C there, open it and try to navigate and create a folder, if all is ok, it works. If you are not able to create a folder o transfer any file from your computer, do not continue until this is fixed.
2. (Fastboot) First, keep the TWRP folder open and the recovery.bat file visible. Unplug the phone and put it in Fastboot mode (power it off, then Power and Vol- for a few seconds)
3. (Recovery flashing) Just execute the recovery.bat file (double click) and press a key if it asks for it (there should appear a green window with text). Done, recovery flashed (read text to see if everything is done). Now with TWRP installed, you won't need anymore (you shouldn't) the computer for using fastboot, now only for transfering the ROM files to the phone to use it from the TWRP.
4. (Wiping) Now let's boot into Recovery mode (TWRP in this case), two ways for it: you can Power and Vol+ while it is powered off, or you can boot Android, go into Settings, About phone, updates and in the 3 dot menu, there is a button for booting into recovery.
Note about the first TWRP start, it should appear this screenshot
Just press on never show again and swipe. Now, in TWRP, enter Wipe, select all partitions and wipe them all, it should appear an error about usb otg, doesn't matter, wipe is done correctly. Now you need to reboot into Recovery mode again, needed when wiping partitions another than cache or dalvik cache (if you don't reboot now, it won't let you flash), so press the mid button in the navigation bar to go to the main menu, and enter in Reboot > reboot recovery. If a message of "no OS installed" or "install supersu" appears, say no or ignore
5. (Flash!) Now, with the phone plugged, MTP should be working, so now you have to transfer the ROM, gapps and supersu files (gapps=google apps; gapps and supersu if needed as i explained in step 1). Now in the phone, press install, select the ROM, then add zip, select the gapps, add zip, supersu, and then swipe, a minute later there should appear a reboot system (android) button and the wipe cache button, first press wipe cache button, do it, and then reboot system.
Congratulations, now you can consider yourself a h4k3r, next step hacking into NSA maybe or something? Wait for the guide
From now on, flashing will usually consist in downloading the rom file from the phone (or from the computer and then transfer to the phone) and with the same gapps and supersu files downloaded above, you can flash, and then wipe cache. This is a dirty flash, only do it if updating a ROM, if going o another type of rom you must clean flash, which is done by first wiping all partitions as done in step 4 (note: all personal data would be lost, backup with titanium backup for example, and transfer all files to computer)
SECTION 4: Summary of ROMs available to our phone
MIUI: the ROM that comes with the phone, made by Xiaomi, full of features, loved by ones, hated by others
-MIUI chinese: the original official Xiaomi one, only in english and chinese languages, and comes with preinstalled chinese apps. Two variations: stable (released like once per month) and weekly
-MIUI .eu: modified version of the chinese, removed preinstalled chinese apps, a lot of languages included. Also comes in stable and weekly versions.
CyanogenMod: is a proyect which purpose is to make the full ROM open sourcered, and include more features than the official Google Android ROM doesn't include.
-CM from Kumajaya: most popular edition for our phone, this guy is doing a very good job with the kernel, making the ROM very stable and battery efficient.
-CM from Team Superluminal (TSL): they were the first to bring us CM, is not open sourcered (or at least is not their main job, as opposed to kuma) but is pretty stable, more recommended for noobies, kuma is more for staying up to date frequently
Resurrection Remix: a ROM that brings together a lot of different ROMs, unifying a lot of features. In Mi4C is a bit unstable for now, but is a matter of time.

Hello Akrai,
First of all, I wanna thank you all your effort and dedication in helping us to fiddle with our smartphones. Thanks to people like you, the rest of us can enjoy greater funcionality and custome options.
On the other hand, I've got a doubt that I'd love you could shed light on. You'll see: not long ago I acquire a Xiaomi Mi4c device & my intention is being able to have added features of development in case I'd feel like trying things. However, I currently just want to have available tools as the recovery flashed and root access without getting to change to an EU version ROM, I mean, keeping the official developer ROM that it's already installed.
So, here my question: can I install the recovery without needing to change at ROM.eu and, therefore, avoiding to reinstall the Oficial developer one again? If I want to keep the aforementioned ROM, is that one which I've got to insert on the root folder of the phone?
Lastly, in the official ROM you can be root through the Security App/permissions. So, ¿Do I need equally to get SuperSU? Because It's not necessary to obtain root by other way running the official developer, right? I unlocked the bootloader and enabled root access already, certainly.
Thank you so much beforehand. I hope that I expressed myself clearly enough and so you can help me.
Greetings!
Lucas ^^.
Thanks a lot!!
Thanks a lot!! This is the first time I am using your post to clean-up a Xiaomi Mi4C of chinese bloatware, unlock and install a custom ROM from your particular google drive links... Am going to bookmark this for further use!!
Thanks a lot, very informative and descriptive...:good:
Can this method still relevant today on MIUI 9.2.2.0?
Hey, I have my Mi4C on MIUI 9.2.2.0 stable china. Can this method work for my phone now?
I have problem with mi flash unlock.
Long ago when I purchased this phone, it used a “reseller” ROM and this method worked just fine.
Anyone?
Sorry wrong thread. I should post in unlocking guide
