[Q] Motorola Defy - wifi problem with CM10.1 3/26 build - General Questions and Answers

I recently installed Quarx build of CM10.1 on my Motorola Defy. I have not been able to get wifi to work. I installed from:
http://quarx2k.ru/cm10.1-nightly-defy+/2.6.32/
I followed the directions and suggestions at various places in the main thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768702&page=1617
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768702
Other bits of information:
The access point works with other wifi devices.
The phone connects to the access point with the stock ROM.
The phone doesn't connect even if the access point is open and no other devices are connected.
The phone doesn't connect to a different open access point.
The phone does see the access points.
The phone says connecting as the bars next to my access point changes from 1 to 4 bars and back again.
The phone does connect for cellular data (t-mobile usa).
The 3/28 and 3/31 builds behave the same way.
Any other suggestions to get wifi to work?
Thank you.

CM10.1 (notice the .1 thing) is experimental and not for daily use, only for devs use. Use CM10 instead.
EDIT: http://quarx2k.ru/cm10-2ndboot-nightly-defy(+)/ is the one you need.

Thank you for the reply.
Both gapps-jb-20121212-signed.zip and gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip seem to work fine with the 10.1 3-26 build. I got them from:
goo dot im slash gapps

I just gave that a try. After the installation it won't boot - just a black screen. I suspect it is due to the efuse that the defy has that won't let you install older versions after you go forward.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216982
I looked at the page at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2013059
The 2.6.32 based builds seemed relatively stable, thus I chose that one. The 3.0.8 kernel builds were clearly marked as experimental.

I just tried the CM10 again and it installed, so it must not have been an efuse issue. Not sure why it hung during boot on the last attempt. In any case the 10-26 CM10 build has the exact same wifi behavior as the 10-26 CM10.1 build. Wifi won't connect.
Thank you for the suggestion though.

3/24 builds and beyond got a new wifi driver by quarx. try CM10 3/18, it's the last build with the old driver. You're right, I just realize there's a "seems stable" branch of CM10.1 but I cant tell because it's very recent. You linked to CM10 posts and there's a dedicated CM10.1 thread. I suppose new CM10.1 uses the new wifi driver. Also notice CM10 needs specific gapps and you cannot use the gapps for CM10.1, check goo.im chart for compatibility. I use that gapps for CM10: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1864796 they're lighter than goo.im ones (which almost fulls the /system partition) because they're optimized for defy.
EDIT: Also notice that new wifi driver needs the /data/misc/wifi folder to be deleted at first boot and reboot for recreation. Also try another Access Point because some poeple is complaining about some routers not working with the new driver. Good Luck.
Bye!

Thank you for the answers. I had tried most of it, but learned some new things as well.
So far, the 3/7 build has been stable and working well for me.

You may have flashed the wrong gapps. If you are updating from an older version of custom rom, I recommend you to wipe data.

I did do a full wipe before each attempt. That seemed like a good plan to minimize the chances of something going wrong.
I think I used the correct gapps. The google apps (gmail, store, etc.) all seem to work.

I had this problem before and I fixed it.
You can do the following steps below:
1. Flash the latest version of cm10.1, do not wipe.
2. Go to custom recovery, then go to wipe, then advanced wipe, choose wipe system and cache. There will be a cross on the left of them. Do not wipe others. Do not reboot or else your phone will be unusable.
3. Flash the rom again which you had flashed just now. Then, flash gapps.
4. Reboot, ENJOY!

I am facing exactly same problem.
were you able to get your wifi work on new drivers beyond 26/3 for CM10 and CM10.1 ??
Please share any workaround or any info you gathered here.
Thanks

No, I have not had any CM build after March 7 work on my Defy. But, I have not tried any builds other than those listed in my original post. The March 7 build did what I needed it to do (got Google Hangouts working on my phone). So, the March 7th build is the one still installed on my phone.

Need Netfilter enabled Kernel for 1.2

Trying to do wireless tether, already rooted, just need correct kernel i believe.
There's a new *PROPER* CyanogenMod release out for the 1.2 that includes exactly what you're asking for. It's in this forum, and consistently in the top 20 most recently updated. All you need to do is click...
This one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=671122
But you can't just patch it onto any rom, you have to make sure you're using the official Cyanogenmod 4.2.15.1 ROM before you can flash that patch onto it. (see the second post of that thread above). But once you do that you'll have full hardware capabilities as well as the custom kernel features CM offers (Such as wifi and usb tethering, though I would use USB tethering as Wifi drains the battery even if you got it plugged in).
so which option would i select from here:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Main_Page#How_do_I_upgrade_to_the_latest_CyanogenMod.3F
I just did "Upgrading from a CyanogenMod version less than 4.1.99 or other rooted ROMs", and now the phone is stuck at htc magic screen. any ideas?
Got it, just had to install the new ported cyanogen after installing the other 3 zips

Ported (which one are you refering to, there's one that takes the official CM rom, then you flash a patch onto it, then there's one earlier thread with a 'ported' rom)?
just get barnacle tether and don't worry about the kernel.
it does perfect wifi tether

Camcorder works fine in the proper cm port

Phone stays in Roaming mode.

I've Installed this yesterday, but I'm experiencing a couple of bugs.
I first did a format (disk + dalvic),
then flashed Codename Android v3.3.2
then Camera + Backlit Fix
and then Codename Android GAPPS
Because I have a S-on device, I flashbooted the boot.img from the CA Gapps zip. (other zips didn't have that file)
Everything works very smoothly, but the errors/bugs I encounter are:
4. When I insert my SIM-card, I'm always Roaming, untill I enable WIFI, then I can make phonecalls.
So when WIFI signal is lost, I'm at Roaming and mobile-internet doesn't work.
Does other people have these issues, or is it because of a wrong Boot.img I flashed?

Since I don't want to post this in the dev section anymore, I'll continue here.
This problem first started with Codename Android.
When I install an other ROM; for example Blindbean, the problem stays.
Then I tried MIUI from Shrome, same problem.
(always with format disk and clean dalvik cache)
This night I installed the ICE-DS v4.4 ROM, and everything works fine again.
But when I install Blindbean again, problem is back.
You guys have any idea how this is possible.
Boot.img isn't suppose to be in gapps. Should be inside the rom itself.
When flashing a new rom always do a full wipe.
Sent from my HTC Desire S
Ok, so I did again couple of hours of googling and stuff, and found some interesting stuff.
In our country, we have 3 mobile networks with their own towers. (proximus, mobistar, base)
But 2 of them rent these towers to other carriers. (mobistar for example to Telenet)
It appears Jellybean (I have it on every JB rom) sees a difference between the carrier and the tower-network. (If you get my point)
So I have to enable Roaming to be able to use my carriers network.
So far I can see, no additional costs.
But this still is a strange bug, that started with JB.

Team EOS issue

Well, it won't let me post in the official thread so I'm forced to put it here.
I recently installed the Team EOS Jelly Bean nightly (Stingray MZ602) their gapps, and reflashed the ICS radio as recommended using Rogue Recovery. Things have been working well except the WiFi. It tends to cut out randomly. It will be connected yet not transmit or receive. I have to turn it off and on frequently in order for it to work. No, it's not the router or my network. I am hoping for a solution other than going back to ICS.
First thing I would do is to full wipe and format /system
And flash twrp recovery that is advised as stable flasher.
Then redownload the ROM and gapps and make sure check sum is OK,
Then flash and reboot.
This way, you would id the source of your issue, ROM bug or recovery flasher? Cuz I know other guys face no issues like yours with twrp. Worth to try. Good luck.
The twrp page hasn't been updated since April and the project itself hasn't been updated since October of 2011. How can you be sure that it'll work with the radio zip better than Rogue? Or even the Team EOS JB build?
Twrp is advised by team eos. They asked to use it. And you need twrp for Xoom,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28988754
Installation method 4 thru goo manager.
I remember one of the stingray users had an issue with the radio flashing and it went great with twrp.
Good luck.
Didn't work. I still have to reset the WiFi every 5 minutes or so. Also, the twrp recovery takes a LOT longer to load than Rogue's. Almost thought it wasn't going to work for a bit until the 'curtain' finally rose.
Over 24-hour bump...
Just put on EOS 138 and reflashed the radios after going back to Rogue. Still radio issues with WiFi. Found some other threads detailing that Jelly Bean in general seems to have WiFi issues. As much as I hate it, I'm starting to think that I will have to 1) revert to ICS, 2) wait for an updated radio file, or 3) deal with it.

I always have that problem with their roms. Flash a kernel, thats always helped my situation.
Also I have zero issues with wifi on JB with my GNexus, N7, Infuse and Atrix. Its not JB, at least not as far as I have seen. Granted none are stock.
Which kernel would you recommend?
Also, until JB I have not had this issue with EOS builds.

I flashed Eos 138 last night (was on CNA), without doing the radios, nor a kernel, and didn’t have any problems.
The Eos forum states that it has the kernel baked into the rom, so flashing the kernel is likely redundant.
However, for ****s and giggles I tried flashing the Eos 3.0.15 kernel and it would not flash, but I was able to flash the Eos 3.0.5 kernel instead and it took. I haven’t seen any issues, either before or after the kernel flash, so perhaps you should try re-flashing the entire rom sans radios and see what happens.
One of the nice things about the Xoom is its pretty easy to fix anything you could do to it via ADB and fastboot, so try some different combos, or start all the way over (from stock). If that doesn’t help, try a different JB rom and see if you get the same problem.
Also make sure you are flashing the right rom, there are several variants for the Xoom - 3G, 4G, Euro, and of course wifi only.
Just flashed CM10 and the non-EOS gapps without flashing radios. Running on WiFi for about 20 minutes so far without issue. Will try more testing later today.
EOS 4 & Kindle
Thanks EOS for 4.2.1! Feels like most things are working...except Kindle locks up on start-up. Just sayin'....

S3 rom wifi issue help please

hey im new to the forum and i rooted my s3 and have the r420 senergy rom installed but the wifi dooesnt work! uhhhhh i cant post in the development section till i have 10 posts. so any one who can help that would be great. ive been doing a lot of reading and what is the differnce between nightly and and regular roms? and i read that the wifi wont work on the nightly rom with out a kernel flash?>?>? Is this right? im going to try the v1.6 senergy any way .....my model is the i535 but yall probably already know that because you hacked my ip address and seen my phone plugged in J/K ha thanks in advance
First off, Synergy r433 is the latest version. And a new release is scheduled to drop any minute now.
A nightly is an experimental build that gets updated nightly. Whereas a stable build is less frequent but as the name suggests is stable. Nightly you must really know what you're doing and are be okay with occasional bugs, otherwise use the stable releases. (fyi SynergyROM stopped releasing nightlies)
As for your Wifi problem, reflash but the make sure you do a full factory reset, and then a super wipe within the AROMA installer. *This will wipe internal storage, make sure to have the ROM zip on external storage* Wifi is not bugged, I'm suggesting the was a flashing error.
Sent via SGS3 using Tapatalk
Thank you so much for replying. i was thinking the same about the nightly "name" but thanks for clarifying. i have tried several times. in clockworkmod recovery(or whatever the name is) i factory reset and in the installer i wipe everything. (on the internal sd) and then install cleanly. but my kernel doesnt flashed it says its not unlocked.?!?! how do i unock it? i unlocked the bootloader and once more so i knew for sure. and my phone says custom with a padlock unlocked symbol below. but same thing everytime...wifi is buggy. i like this rom and just want it to work...thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!! is there a special "better" kernel unlock method? my paitients are getting low...lol well my girl wants her phone stock ...F**CK THATT!!!!!!!!!! thanks man

I am experiencing the same issue.
I rooted, flashed CWO, and then installed synergy. Nothing worked... then I read that you need to unlock the bootrom so I did that, rebooted and got the same... no wifi. After unlocking the bootloader I reinstalled synergy (R484) and still WiFi will not turn on.
I followed they synergy thread for flashing and This thread for bootloader unlocks.
Provider: Verizon
Phone: GS3
ROM: SynergyROM (r484)
Recovery: ClockworkOrange
Got it fixed!
So... I only used odin... no romloader apps or any of that crap...
1: Reinstalled stock ROM
2: Reinstalled CWO
3: Reinstalled Root+Bootloader
4: Reinstalled SynergyROM
5: Enjoy! Wifi works, all applications work!

[Q] Wifi problems on Grimlock v2.2 ROM

Hi guys,
I'm pretty noob around here so if I ask you silly questions please don't bother.
The problem is, I fed up with my stock Asus firmware on my TF300TG and decided to install a custom rom.
Unlocked the bootloader, installed TWRP 2.5.0.0 for custom recovery. Then i did research on xda and find out Grimlock V2.2 is suiting my daily usage.
I did factory reset, wipe dalvik cahce and installed Grimlock and everything went OK. But after I boot into Grimlock 3G worked but I can't open wi-fi.
I thought sometimes just rebooting fixes most of things, then I reboot my tablet. This time i can see wi-fi is connecting but it doesn't connect at all. You can't visit any website or download apps from Google Play. 3G works smooth though.
Than i tried to install with TF300 kernel, this time as expected 3G has gone but wi-fi works perfect.
So which kernel should I use or what should I do to use 3G and wi-fi at the same time.
Thank you!

I wonder if it was just a bad install. I haven't heard of anybody else having problems with the wifi with the TG kernel. I'd recommend to try and do a fresh install again, doing all wipes, and making sure to choose the kernel for the TF300TG.

Are you able to take a logcat and send it to me? Most TG users are running this rom without issue.
I installed Grimlock 2.2 rom on my TF300TG. Before this, I had latest Asus firmware installed on, bootloader unlocked and rooted.
With this new firmware, when I poweron it, if I try to connect it using either 3g or wifi activating them, it can't connect (on wifi it founds my wifi network but can't obtain IP address).
If I activate 3g (or wifi) and reboot, then it connect successfully.

I would suggest 2 options:
1) Install CROMI instead of GRIMLOCK - NEWEST CROMI
2) Run the kernel installer by sbdags on the second post of the thread: KERNEL INSTALLER POST - Installing a TF300TG kernel in here should fix the wifi issues in GRIMLOCK. These kernels are all compatible with GRIMLOCK as well.

Hey hardslog. Thank you for your reply.
Before your reply I have flashed CROMI and testing it now. So far, so good But I think I will give GRIMLOCK another shoot using your advice
Can anyone tell me if I could run a stock Kernel on the 6.0.1 version of Katkiss? And if so, how do I load a kernel? I'm having wifi issues that were not there when I was on a stock rom.
