[Q] Net10 Wireless Assigned Spam Number? - General Topics

Hello I recently switched from Verizon to Net10 Wireless (AT&T MVNO) and the number Net10 assigned has a lot of spam. I've had over four calls, one for some guy named Adam and it was about his business going under, another was some kid saying "DAD, DAD, Hello, DAD!". It's very annoying. The other calls were for Merchant services and other crap, but honestly my question to the XDA community is: How many have been assigned a number from StraightTalk, Simple Mobile, Net10 and other MVNO's that receives a lot of spam calls/texts? I meant to port my number, but I was worried about the extra ETF fees since I was leaving a family plan (was paying over $70 a month for 5GB data). Verizon had quoted me around $240 and with taxes under $300 for early termination, but I was worried the cost would be like $350+ if I ported the my old number. Anyhow I plan to use Net10 with a new Nexus 4 (its on the way).
Thank you,
Thomas

Is that really "spam" ? That sounds like just wrong numbers probably because it used to be someone's and they don't have it any more. I mean, I've tried to text someone and gotten a wrong number because he'd changed it - it happens.
I got some dude's calls for a while when I was on Sprint - it was a year in, even. I think he just gave out the wrong number or something. I got calls from his parents, some girls, a pharmacy, library, and a car dealership. I mostly just found it amusing.

Oh, well it just worries me, because when I switched from Tmobile to verizon back in 08 the new number NEVER had spam. It is not the same with Net10, hence my question and this thread.

Media net $10/mo

I know there was a thread earlier about this but I could not find it. Anyways ATT, Today has dropped their price to $10 a month. Now the only thread said you had to have family messaging and then manually change it to the $10 a month. I see if you upgrade to media net and messaging ( not family ) that it is $30 and not $35. On a couple ATT forums they say you have to call in and ask for the $10 a month with family messaging. Thought I'd put this out there again and confirm that it did happen, only it seems not as exactly planned. I'll update once I call in and try to get to $10 a month with family messaging.
This is for real and does work. Most reps do not know about it so you may have to talk to a supervisor or call back.
Quote from ATT Forum:
i have 4 lines ..2 have pda plans and the other 2 had the media net unl for 15.00 and i just called and they changed mine to the 10.00 unl plan!!!! at first he acted like he did not know wat im talkin about...but he got it now.. so keep in mind if u call in and they dont kno wat u talkin about u can always hang up and call back .. i guess cuz its so new they have not found out about it yet.

When I called, I told the rep what I had read on the ATT FORUM!! Mentioned that I am On HERE all the time!! He knew what I was talking about and said there were some prerequisites. Needless to say that I basically told HIM what they were, from what I have read, before he had the chance to tell me. Anyway, he was VERY nice and changed it!! That's $5 in my pocket every month! Thanks to the OP for posting this little tidbit of information!! :smileyhappy:

I've added an attachment of the online account that shows that it is downgraded in a bundle, but of course you can't bundle if you have family messaging unlimited.
Steps to get yours for $5 less:
1. Call and alert them of the deal
2. If they claim it does not exist, simply tell them you have friends that have got it and tell them to look at the Media Net Bundle which is $5 less.
3. Ask to talk to a supervisor.
I saw this.
AT&T burying MEdiaNet branding, dropping data plan prices?
Let us know when you talk to ATT if you can change it with a family talk messaging plan. I tried going onto my account online and I did not see an option to change to $10.
that is an awesome deal!!! the only thing i read though is specifically to the family plan. are there any new rumors as to whether or not the overall data plan would be cheaper for individual data plan like the (pda personal plan)? some other thread was suggesting $15 for medianet.
any thoughts?
I haven't yet called as I seem to misplaced or lost my little nokia phone that I use to get the Media Net. I will update once I call though.
This is an ATT Forum that people said they were able to get the cheap plan yesterday. They claim that most Reps from ATT are unaware of the new change and usually takes a little while to get them to change it.
http://forums.wireless.att.com/cng/...thread.id=12172&view=by_date_ascending&page=2
This is only on non smart phones. This does not include pda phones or the iphone. I work for at&t.
Exactly...but you can use the IMEI from your non smart phones and make AT&T think you are using those phones. As a rep I can't believe you are unaware of this fact.

That is true, I forgot they ask for that when you call. Maybe I'll just give a friend a call who has a non pda phone and get that IMEI lol. Thanks.
If I swap SIMs, my online account shows the non-PDA phone and the option shows up but when I try to change it I get an error saying its not compatible with the phone/device on my account. I think I've read somewhere that there's a flag on the account showing that you've had a PDA phone so the only way to get it changed is to call.
Yeah calling is the only way you can get it changed.
Just be careful with the amount of internet you use because if you use quite a bit they will get suspicious.
Yeah they told me the same thing after I had bought my Fuze. I just had to provide the IMEI of the other device and they set it up for me. From my experience with ATT, ignorance works well. If I ever get caught with using my Fuze on this plan, I'll just tell them no one told me. I'll then start complaining that it is no different from having a regular phone or PDA, of course on PDA you will use more than a regular phone. But a regular phone is STILL unlimited, so theoretically you could use more than a PDA and there isn't anything wrong. I also throw in that I've been a customer for over 7 years ( maybe not that long but it's been a while lol ) before Cingular bought ATT, and ever since then paid my bill on time and usually have a positive balance of $50. They've never given me any problems after I make that fact clear and is a big reason why I've stayed with them.
Yeah. I always pull the card that(since I am on my parents plan) my mom retired from SBC before being bought by AT&T and worked their for 30 years and my dad is retired military and they have provided all internet/phone connections for our home for a very long time.
Works every time
I guess fuze users are short out of luck unless they happen to have a phone that is 3g usable.

I'm not sure it has to be a 3G phone to do this trick, I think it can be any phone ( Non PDA of course ). I had a little Nokia that was a pay per use one and I'm sure it wasn't 3G. Still worked. Do need to find the little guy though.
Hello all! No such luck here
I went online and it showed my phone as the FUZE so I switch my sim into a cheapo Motorola C168i-PAYG, I made a couple of calls and did some other things on this phone and eventually it did update online and showed the Motorola C168i-PAYG as my phone. I checked and it still showed my Data Unlimited as $15.00, so I dropped it and then readded it and sure enough it was still at $15.00. I called ATT and the rep I got ahold of said the same thing, the unlimited data was $15.00 and he didn't know anything about the $10.00 one...
so no such luck for me!
Good luck to everyone else, we'll see what happens :-\

Look at Data Unlimited ( name changed from Media Net today ) and Unlimited Messaging ( Not Family Messaging ) It is $5 cheaper a month. This confirms that they are doing the $10 a month. Most reps, or so I've heard have said they don't know about it. Ask to talk to a supervisior tell both of them that you have friends who have had it done and you've notice the change if you had Data Unlimited and Unlimited Messaging it'd be $5 cheaper. It may take about a half hour before they finally let you do it but I can assure you they will do it. I haven't yet tried it because I need a non smart phone to try it. I will post back when I do try it. Also because a half hour is a long time, and this usually pisses me off to have to be on the phone for a half hour because they don't know what is going on in their own company, I ask for more rollover minutes. I usually get 20-200 extra minutes from having to be on hold and waiting for so long. Just be firm with them and don't take no for an answer.
I did notice the name change but the thing is it is still showing as $15.00! I might call back in a few days after it has had time to go through their system
Thx and post back if anyone has actually success with this !
The rep did ask for a link or something where it said this price etc etc etc ;-)! Mabye if there was somewhere on their own site or an actual place I could show them this price change rather than just word of mouth ya know!

I uploaded an image of the online account. You can see Unlimited Messaging is $20/mo and Unlimited Data is $15, But Bundled together they're only $30. This used to be $35. You're still supposed to be able to get it for $10 with a Unlimited Family Messaging plan. Inform them of this, and again don't take no for an answer lol. Or just wait until I get a non smart phone and I'll post and tell you exactly what I said and did.

Well on the forum posted on AT&T's website people have confirmed that they did. It took them a while to get through and many of them said the Rep did not know about it and had to call them back like 2 hours later. The link again is:
http://forums.wireless.att.com/cng/...thread.id=12172&view=by_date_ascending&page=2
Post 13 is one that confirmed it. Tell ATT to look at that if you want.

[Q] AT&T changed data plan. Can I get out ETF free?

Hi all,
If my question is not in the appropriate forum please move it. I can also see this question in the general section.
Situation & Question below:
Today AT&T just changed my unlimited media net data plan ($15) to the 2gb capped data pro2 plan ($25). When I first signed up for AT&T over a year ago I got the unlimited medianet plan with a normal 3g flip phone. I quickly took the 3g sim from the flip phone and began using my medianet dataplan with an Xperia x1 smartphone. Last March I replaced the Xperia x1 with an AT&T branded Backflip I purchased off of ebay. Since the beginning of my plan I have had no problems with using the medianet dataplan with my smartphones. Even when AT&T changed their data plans this summer I assumed I would be "grandfathered" in with my current plan.
Since AT&T changed my plan am I able to leave AT&T without suffering an ETF or is it within my contract that AT&T can make a change and not allow me to opt out if they notice a "mistake" on my account?
Also, how exactly would you suggest going about it if I can use this as an excuse to break my contract. I've read several articles online about it, but I would appreciate any extra experience.
1. I know I was kind of abusing a loop hole, so please spare me the lecture.
2. The 2gb plan won't work for me because I tether my netbook to my phone at least twice a day on a 1 hour train ride. (I usually use 1.5-3GB a month)
Thanks in advanced.
You might be able to get your unlimited plan back if you complain to an AT&T rep about the change of terms of service. But I suspect they finally caught on to your tethering
Dropped from my smoking fast Captivate (Darky's Raw Steel v3.0)
I got that text msg also on the 21st. It looks like tethering has nothing to do with it since I didn't even bother to tether. I see some folks are able to get their grandfathered plans back and some can't. It is up to the service rep. As soon as I find a couple of hours to call ATT service, I will be trying to get my grandfathered data plan back.
Good luck on your try.
I was a QA Supervisor in a call center with Cingular and then AT&T for years.
First thing, anytime you change phones you need to call AT&T and change the IMEI number on that line number. If you do not do this, you can have problems with your service and it CAN cause problems with billing some of the time. Not saying that has ANYTHING to do with your current issue, I'm just sharing that information with you. People think they can just jump the SIM card from one phone to the next without an issue but it CAN cause a problem. AGAIN, not saying that has ANYTHING to do with your problem and this is just a SIDE NOTE.
As far as you trying to get out of your contract without an ETF, it is not going to happen. AT&T reserves the right to change your service at anytime. This is the policy with 98% of companies these days. NOW, depending on where you are in your contract, you could be subject to a lower ETF here. I know that AT&T raised the ETF a few months ago but as it has always been, the farther along you are in your contract, the lower the fee will be. I would call them and ask how much the ETF would be right now. Also get the ETF for each month for the next say, 6 months. (just looked back at your post again and noticed that you have had service for over a year now). Since you are over one year into your contract, you MIGHT be able to get something out of this if you do not want to cancel and just pay the lower fee. Get a supervisor on the phone and BE NICE. Do NOT try to quote any laws, policies or TOS to the person you speak to. You do not work for AT&T, THEY DO. Just let them know that you are not happy with the new data plan and have been looking into changing to a different company so that you can use the unlimited data. I myself have the unlimited data plan and it is still on $15 a month. I've had it for over 3 years and have upgraded within that time. All of the phones on my account have the unlimited data @ $15 a month and all have been upgraded while using the plan. I have a feeling that they got you because of the tethering OR you have somehow allowed this change to happen while on the phone with one of the CSRs. I've seen where plans have been changed on accounts and the customer was on the phone when it happened and agreed to it. I've also seen these same customers call back later and claim they never agreed to anything. It is VERY easy to get lost in the conversation with some of these CSRs and have things changed on your account, not saying it is right for them to do , just saying it happens.
Talk to a supervisor and go from there with it. Make sure you let him know you have had the UDP for the life of the account and without it, you will be looking at a different company. He will check your account and see when, why and how the plan was changed and he MIGHT allow you to have it back. AT&T is not in the business of losing customers, use that to get what you want. Just remember, BE NICE and do not try to act like you know more than the person you are talking to (i don't care if you're talking to one of the idiots on the call floor)
You cancel your service, you are going to pay an ETF. There is no way around that. Like I said, you are far along in your contract so it will not cost you as much. I believe there is at least one company out there right now that will pay your ETF with AT&T if you switch service and use them. I can't remember which company it is but you can google search or call the different companies and ask just ask well as I can.
thanks for the great reply. I myself don't want to leave, I am going to call them to get my grandfathered data plan back if I can. I usually do call them to change the IMEI but just plum forgot to with this phone.
Thanks again

Your info is on the spot for anyone reading this. I followed it to a tee and I now have my old dataplan back. So your post was not wasted on me. It had all the info I needed to get my plan back. It took no where near two hours (actually only about 20 minutes). CSR was pleasent and knew exactly what to do.
Thanks again

A new "chink" in the armor that is att customer service. (for you to enjoy?)

A new "chink" in the armor that is att customer service. (for you to enjoy?)
Long story: been with att since they bought up cingular. Have upgrade numerous times thru premiere over the years. This time one thing was different, i had moved and needed to change my phone number.
The long and short of it is this: when i changed my number ( originally because of location but 3x more times because i got recycled numbers complete with bill collectors and spam texts). They lost the upgrade essentially.
I discovered and could use advice on who to report it to another whole issue also. When you change your number you lose access to your account online instantly. Like you never exsisted. I returned one of my upgrade (sony vivaz). But because i changed phone numbers they couldnt even find the returned item without me explaining for over an hour while i waited for. Supervisor.
One other complication was that after spending 150 online thru discounted premiere i walked into a target store to see the cap for fifty a day after i got it.
I called they credited me 100 dollars. BUT.....
Now my account only shows a 15 dollar credit because i changed my number inbetween one more time (the recycled number i mentioned).
Since i lost access to those accounts im supposed to take them on their werd that the 92 dollars for the vivaz is returned (yes i will see it arrive in the bank but thats not the point!). Nor do i have any idea WHAT my 100 dolar credit was applied to. I suggested to them that weve been in utter turmoil with att returning the phone during the entire billing cycle and. That the way things were going they should wipe my bill for the month AND THEN apply the 100 dollaars.
So after 93 more mins today and telling that fked up story three times the superviisor says he cant sell me a second cap at the fifty dollar price. (even though i made the last moe-ron note the account). I said fine sell it to me for 150 again and credit me 100 again.
Oh im NOT doing that sir.
Thats when he lost. After six years and id guestimate well over 80 man hours on the phone with cust. Service i told him i would be shutting off my accounts tonite. And i hung up.
How does this help you?
Lolz
Well you see if i cancel i have a brandy new cap for fitty bucks. Since i changed the account number im eligible immediTely for an upgrade.
No early term. Nothing. Matter of fact while trying to resolve the upgrade iissue several times they asked which number (i wNted to upgrade)
Because they cant see anything but two brand new accounts with eligibilty.
I hope some can read thru this rant. And Realize what im saying lol.
Good luck and stick it to em good.

Nobody believes you were on the phone for 80 hours. If you were, you should get a job and buy your phones. You didn't do anything magical. Customer Care deals with idiots like you every day.
You're dumb for demanding so many number changes. They probably never reset your contract through this process, but were just doing you a favor by offering you another phone replacement. Sitting on the phone and badgering someone until they give in is not awesome. When they next dude calls in and can't get help because you ruined the system with your selfish greed, we'll all high-five you then!
Trying to order an additional phone when you already got one with a discount is not going to work every time. When you signed up for that Captivate, you signed up for a $325 ETF, tied to your SSN. I think the 'long story short' of this is that you should enjoy your ETF.
Moron the second phone is to replace the ****ty vivaz my wife picked out lol. Greed? Yes i should take it in the pants from the AT and Teaparty forever.
I apparently should accept having some other morons bill collectors calling me with in two hours of getting the new number lol...baaaaaa baaaaa
80 hours over SIX YEARS. For this one issue maybe 5 total alone.
They took my unlimited last year my 4600 rollovers got dropped into the void when my numbers changed. **** yer right lion im calling. Back right now to apologize.
Oh and whovers counting spelling.... Lolz. Really? Really?

close but no. SBC and Bell South merged their cellphone divisions to create Cingular Wireless. AT&T split their landline and cellphone divisions and sold AT&T Wireless to Cingular. Cingular kept the Cingular wireless name because AT&T's landline division, also known as the AT&T parent company kept the AT&T wireless name through an agreement during the wireless merger/buyout. AT&T was going to launch a new wireless division called AT&T wireless, but SBC bought out AT&T landline. because of the buyout, Cingular was allowed to use the AT&T Wireless name.

Porting Number & Google Voice

I use Google Voice on a daily basis for working, getting all my phone calls forwarded, keeping voice & missed records, etc. SO I decided if I ever want to change service one day from AT&T to someone else which I have in the past I would port my number over to Google Voice. So I called AT&T to talk & find what fees I would incur. I spoke with a voice rep and a tech rep. Both said I could not port my phone number in anyway to another carrier without incurring a ETF of $305. I said I dont want to kill my service with AT&T but they said "I could not have the best of both worlds". Now I was really nice to let them know what I would like to do by keeping there service and porting my number.
Anyone got any ideas of whom I can speak with besides adding another line and not incurring a ETF?
You cannot port to another carrier while under contract without incurring the ETF. If your contract expires, without you making any changes that would renew it (changing your plan, for one, I think some carriers even re-up if you get a new phone) and you're on month-to-month, then you're free to port without any termination fees.
That's how I did it when I came from Verizon and Quest (home phone, no contract anyway) to AT&T.

Anyone got any ideas of whom I can speak with besides adding another line and not incurring a ETF?

When I left Sprint, I forgot that none of the other carriers had Google Voice integration, and ported my number over to AT&T instead of Google Voice. Huge mistake. Unfortunately, I can tell you that I tried every angle I could think of to get AT&T to let me port my number out while maintaining my contract and there is just no way that they can do it. If you port your number out, you will incur the ETF. I must have spoken to every level of billing and technical service they have; all very nice, and though few understood what I wanted to do or what Google Voice is they all really did try in earnest to find a good solution for me, and sadly they all came to the same conclusion.
I've just kind of settled for waiting until my contract is up and then porting my number out. My fear at that point will be that I will have to sign a new contract to get another number from them, which will suck.

My notion is now I believe that whomever is with Verizon or AT&T will incur shortly NEW higher fees based off the new plans they are going to implement. I do not have multiple devices or use alot of data so their new plans will not work for me. Straight Talk or some other low cost carrier might. However I just signed up in March so I am not looking to change my plans yet or until the economy starts to get worse. Either way I am stuck till my contract runs out or pay the $305. http://www.yahoo.com/_ylt=AqlTQl9rp7Z2.oyZbfF69wybvZx4;_ylu=X3oDMTRtY2hwdWkyBGEDTmV3IEZyb250IE9wZW5zIGluIFdpcmVsZXNzIEJhdHRsZQRjY29kZQNwemJ1YWxsY2FoNQRjcG9zAzgEZwNpZC0yMzY3NjQ4BGludGwDdXMEbWNvZGUDcHpidWFsbGNhaDUEbXBvcwMwBHBrZ3QDMgRwb3MDMQRzZWMDdGQtZmluBHNsawN0aXRsZQR0ZXN0AzUyNg--/SIG=132qrou5f/EXP=1339683498/**http://finance.yahoo.com/news/front-opens-wireless-battle-040100608.html?l=1

If your plan costs change you can always try to get out your contract. We'll have to wait and see what the future holds.
Interesting. It looks like a number port in or out kills the line and starts a new one as I experienced when I ported my google voice number to ATT. I was in contract and remained in contract without an ETF, but billing showed it as a line termination and a new line start with the remaining months
I suspect the system isn't set to allow it by design. Maybe if you go high enough you can find someone in corporate who can waive/credit the ETF?

[Q]Help with Porting Number and name change

I have a fun question. Me and my wife have decided that $160 a month and mediocre data speeds aren't worth it anymore, so we're thinking about making the jump to AT&T which seems to have pretty good coverage and speed here in Tampa Bay. I'm out of contract, she still has a year left, but we'll be breaking hers since it'll cost us like a month of service, which we'll get right back. Her parents are on an AT&T family plan and can add us on for like $20 bucks or something insignificant like that. Even with an upgrade in the data limits, it'll still save us like $100 a month.
Now that i've wasted your time with background, here's my question. I want to port my number, but my Sprint acct is in my name and they told me the name has to match the AT&T account (under her dad's name) in order for it to go thru. And in order for me to change the Sprint acct, he would essentially have to have a COFR done (which requires a credit check, which I'm not even going to ask him to do).
Does anyone have a creative idea on how to get my number over to AT&T? Perhaps porting it to some MVNO like Ting and then getting the account changed over to one of their names? Do MVNO's run credit checks? Is a name change simple? Can you port from an MVNO to another carrier without issue? Are these all stupid questions?
Help!
