Galaxy S4's speaker: It's quite good! - Galaxy S 4 General

Although there was another thread that touched on the S4's speaker volume, it was moved to Q&A as it was a question thread.
This thread is here as an informative thread so it belongs here, and will serve to show that the S4 is no push over when it comes to speaker loudness.
This review here (taken from GSMArena) shows us that the S4's speaker is certainly no slouch and is actually louder than the HTC One.

I think this could have been discussed in the review topic.
But anyways, this is to be expected. I remember in my physics class there was an equation that proved it doesn't matter about the number of speakers you have. 2 speakers doesn't double the loudness. It's the amount of power each one has. It would take 10 speakers of the same kind fo literally double the DCB.
Something like that. My profession is mechanics, not audio or electrical.
But if my memory serves me correct, the power into two speakers is the reason why the HTC One doesn't seem as loud. But what it does have is STEREO where the SGS4 is MONO.

Some nice info!

wow, that chart is really uesful.
I am going to buy LG Optimus G Pro version soon.
I hope it's better than Optimus G.

The loudness doesn't matter. Phones are already loud enough as it is. It's the quality of the sound, and from the looks of it the 7.9mm body will only support a small driver that distorts like crap at higher volumes and sound tinny and sucky in general. For generic polyphonic ringtones its fine, but anything more, especially when you put some mp3 clip of a pop song as your ringtone, and your ears will bleed from the distortion and general bad quality. Forget about using it as a boombox. From reviews I can gather that the BoomSound on the HTC One sounds a lot better than the S4, disregarding loudness output. They really didn't need to put stereo speakers on it, as even when close up to the phone in landscape the stereo separation probably is very minor in such a small thing.

Need a video of the s4 compared to note 2 or htc one for the speakers loudness.
Charts are one thing but I'd like a visual experiance!

no fanboy here but I cant believe the iPhone 5's speakers are below average. I think it sounds pretty good. Either the chart is inaccurate or the LG Optimus G is really that good.

Its about loudness, not quality. Otherwise the one would be miles ahead of the others.

Quite frankly, I'm taking GSMArena's findings with a heavy table spoon of salt. Every other reviewer claims that the One is significantly louder than what GSMA are claiming.

Did they measure the levels though? GSMA is saying HTC is better cause it has cleaner sound, that's the ultimate thing not dB count, it sounds (heh) like a fair assessment, Samsung phones are quite loud (speaker facing the air). HTC's improvement is in quality.

Well, for me the important measure is dB, not quality. I don't listen to music through tiny phone speakers (that is what headphones are for).
I just care that the speaker is loud enough for an ear piercing ringtone that can be heard over background noise.
Side note, a strong vibrate would be nice too. The one on the LG Optimus G is so weak I never feel it, even when it is in my pocket.

I agree, I also prefer SLCD3 over SAMOLED, but this isn't about screen tech, it's about Db's (max speaker loudness), lets keep it on topic.

No he isnt, he is right. I owned the iphone 5 and i can say that it has one of the best audio quality ever. Not only are the speakers nice loud and clear, but the audio through headphones is just an absolute pleasure to hear. Seriously great quality.

The speaker
The speaker is very good on the S4. Balanced and there is a lot of clarity in the sound though it might seam that it was a tradeoff with volume for that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kR8NzAzdHY

Speaker quality - Touch HD vs Xperia vs Omnia

Just a quick question about the speaker quality of these 3 phones. I would like to occasionally listen music directly from the speakers. I've read tons of reviews and the only thing missing is the actual speaker quality. Which one is the best? From what i read here, touch hd's speakers are awful while Xperia is supposed to have great sound. Can anyone comment?
I've weighed all the pro's and con's, and Touch HD was winning, but then i read about the poor audio quality of the speakers, and since i hate the fact it has no flash, it seems i'm gonna get Xperia.
So, in terms of music listening (both with and without headphones), which one is best of the three?
hd
I have and HD and quality of speakers are just normal. I think there is only one speaker.
If you have that item on first priority then there must be better alternatives than HD. It´s obviusly better (and comparable to other phones with the same category) when you use good headphones.
But before make a decision just try to hold an HD in your hand....you will buy it for sure
Joe
That's not my first priority, but considering HD has no flash, that's the second MAJOR drawback for me.
Could you compare the sound from HD to that from TyTn if you've heard it? The sound on my TyTn is just awful
As far as holding it - i live in a very small town, and opnly place to see the devices is my local carrier. And they don't allow the device to be turned on. Other carriers allow it, but don't have Xperia or HD
Hard for me to imagine why not having a flash is such a huge thing, but to each their own.
As eljoe said, try out the devices first hand before you buy.
You're spending some good coin, so maybe making a drive to a nearby city that has the phones you want, and you're able to use them.
I too have a TyTN, and am disappointing also, but I don't htink you'll be happy with the sound from any phone's speaker.
Remember, you're very limited by the kind of sound you're going to get from most phone speakers, since the speakers are so tiny...
Well, i'm not exactly looking for dolby surround here, but i'm hopeing for something better than TyTn speakers. Atleast so the mp3 ringtones sound good.
And like i said, i'm not exactly in a position to try out the devices.
Go for the samsung I8510 (Innov8), has some great speakers on it.
I think out of the three the X1 has the best sound... In a relative way of speaking. The sound will still suck, kind of. Good luck!
Sorry I´m off topic here, but wanted to say that non HD or Xperia have the speaker quality that has Universal with it´s stereo clear sound speakers.
Just my opinion...no ofense to anyone
I got the HD and the speaker quality sucks big time.
Whenever you put on speakerphone the voice distorts. Music distorts aswell so you must turn it down.
My brothers n95 with two speakers doesn't distort at all.
The Nokia 5800 has the best speaker sound Ive ever heared on a Cellphone....
Looks like the up coming Touch Pro2 is designed with stereo sound & conference call speakers...
From HTC site:Speakerphone Innovation
Nothing ruins a conference call faster than not being able to hear what is said, or make yourself heard. The HTC Touch Pro2 puts crystal-clear sound quality and voice reception at the core of its design. In fact, it is a palm-size professional conference phone with a loudspeaker and dedicated noise-cancelling microphone that delivers superior quality conference calls.

Yeah galaxys it seems that TP2 have great speakers!
I can´t wait to put my hands on it!
The only windows mobile phone that has loud decent quality speakers is the Samsung SCH-i760. Also, I have this phone, and it is one of the loudest. The bass i much better than HD, X1, and Omnia.
It isn't as good as an N95 but it is the best stereo speaker phone that has windows mobile.
AFAIK, HTC doesn't even have an acoustics design team for phones. So, anything from HTC, I would say speaker quality would be bad to mediocre, and that too by chance.
If speaker quality is high on the priority list, go for phones by companies which at least try to do some research on acoustics. Examples: Nokia, Samsung, LG, etc.. But definitely not HTC. And Xperia is also manufactured by HTC, so no, I would automatically dismiss that one too.
ultill now the best loudspeaker i tried is from my XpressMusic 5800. the stereo speaker rocks. 2nd best was touch pro 2. very realistic sound . both the X1 and the touch HD louspeaker sucks.. cant even hear anything, too sharp, not even a single percent of bass. hurts my ears. PS: tested omnia 1 and omnia 2. acceptable sound quality but i think nokia still wins in the loudspeaker comparism
^yes, the TP2 speakers sounded very sweet!
The best sound devices (stereo dual speakers of course) are Universal and TP2
i have a x1 and can tell u that the speaker quality is very poor. the phone itself makes very good quality sound through the headphones but the speaker is very poor (and there is only one speaker, if money is not a option the x2 2 speakers which i hear but can not confirm are higher quality than the x1 speaker).

Yes, the speaker quality of the Xperia is unfortunately veeery poor. So poor, that I bother about it quite every day. :-(

Then the surprise comes not expect it to work the remote control that is integrated and works partially, you can call, answer and end calls, and put the pause and play the music
The only thing that does not work, which would be perfect, are the keys to raise and lower the volume, it hurts, but it will not work as thought nothing, because something good is, that almost complete functionality. even though I have to see if it works the handsfree, (micro) to hopefully work to see if you then test and confirm
Worth it because as you know these headphones are of very good quality, if you could make any application or modify the registry or something to activate the function of the volume and would be perfect.
if anyone knows anything, I would be very well the Swift.

EDIT:
Confirm! the speakerphone(microphone) works perfect

we know
there are lots of iphone compatible headphones around, that do work with the HD2 (and the HD) I have a few sets.
My favourite ones are some really cheap ones I bought for less than 15gbp, especially as they are cheap enough that I dont care if I damage them
(I've just found some mm50ip for 18gbp - 5% )!
But you lose the music control (<< and >>) by not using the included ones, so one option is to solder some earbuds onto the existing HD2 controls..
this really should be in the accessories forum.

I would be very carefull when buying good heaphones for such a cheap price, I originally cancelled my order with amazon twice after I found this great website http://fakeheadphones.com and made sure I was getting them from amazon directly!! As I didnt want to end up with a pair of duds
After showing that site to one of my mates, he worked out he'd been sold fakes from ebay a while ago... he wondered why they broke so quickly!

Hello fellas!
just buy an adaptor with remote and plug your favorite inears toy!
check 4 it on ebay.
XD
Ipod earbuds are really bad. Not clear, bad lows, bad highs. Just look at headfi.org and watch for a good headset like nuforce ne-7m (only a a bit more expansive then Senheisser) or some RE0. Senheisser is really popular but just as bose, you pay for the name. But they aren't bad. Once you hear the difference between some apple earbuds and some high quality one's you never go back.

I guess perhaps all headphones with remotes for the 3Gs would work then???
funny thing is iPhone is so annoyed of Google...they are considering to makeBING their default search engine...
Microsoft and Apple cooperation would be pure comedy. lol
The apple headphones aren't the best, i agree. But the remote function is bloody excellent and there are some quality headphones from top companies that support apple but not htc. If this could be developed it would be great but it's not likely. At this rate, ill be heading back to the iphone, the phones just too convenient.
i have the headphones that work fine. they are good in quality and reasionable at price.
how much cost this headphones?
i wonder how is this relevant to HD2 themes and apps?
this should be in the accessories section!!!

Bigger and better back speaker

Anyone have tried to change the default speaker with a better one?
Is it possible? And if yes how difficult?
The default one sounds like a fart from turtle ass, so that's why I'm asking.
I'm sure it's possible, but finding one that doesn't sound like crap would be difficult.
I also would like to know. It's a bit quiet. I sometimes miss calls when it's in my pocket.
Vibration is useless too
Let me see if I can find that teardown link. Maybe we can get a good picture of what it looks like.
EDIT: Here's the link.. http://tjworld.net/blog/htc-desire-z-tear-down
It looks like there is an easy access to that speker - after removing the rear cover:
http://tjworld.net/attachment/blog/htc-desire-z-tear-down/IMG_0235-small.jpg
It stays on the cover, not on the phone side.
However the speaker sits in the rounded plastic shell so replacing with a bigger one would mean playing with cutting it. Am I right?

You are correct, but it's nothing too hard.
So anyone would suggest a good speaker replacement?
It has to be something what fits in the amount of place there.
Maybe there are better solutions of the same size?
I'm compete amateur at this.
ps. and then how to mount it.
I seem to recall the galaxy s speakers being pretty nice.
"cell/mobile phone speakers" searching phrase doesn't work well for this matter. So I don't know how to find any such accessories on web.
Dissembling galaxy s for that wouldn't be cost effective, would it?
Hmm so the speaker is just too small - it'll have to be an extreme hack (i.e one which involves modifying the casing).
Any chance i could move the mainboard to Touch Pro 2 and keep the rest

I think you have missed the point of this thread.
Exactly.
Think before you unintentionally start trolling.
Ive founf spare parts for nokia 5800 and what's written there is that there is ONE loud speaker not the two ones I thought nokia has.
However, if I'm wrong and there is ONE speaker that makes 5800 play so incredibly, it would be the nice direction to go to.
I have found where to buy nokia 5800 loud speaker.
http://www.mobilemonsters.lv/speaker-nokia-5800_p1028.html
There is some electronic info in the picture.
Anyone would help me understand it?
I can't find any electronic info about HTC loud speaker.
So please help me to compare the parameters of the two speakers. I mean especially voltage and resistance.
Will the Nokia 5800 speaker work on HTC Desire Z?
I used to build speakers and it will be difficult to get quality sound with such limited space. We can use a very expensive and tiny single driver. But even with high end drivers, a single one won't be able to cover a wide range of frequencies well, and there will be distortion at higher volume at certain frequencies. Or we can use a tiny cross-over and two tiny drivers (tweeter and woofer), or even three. I haven't looked at the disassembly, but I fear there isn't much room for more than single driver. Ultimately we will have to face some distortion, but this speaker is really awful so I'm open to it.
Unfortunately really small components like these are very expensive from audio parts stores. If you're not ripping apart another phone, the best bet would be these:
Bose IE2 ($100 at Best Buy) and you get two for that price.

I've made up my mind, dead certain now. I've decided to go with the new Apple EarPods, they are much more safer than the iPhone 4S headset I've seen them break easily the top pop out and the cable isn't securely firm no rubber protection it's very lose. Apple EarPods it is!
Part no. MD827ZM/A
I've looked around, seen the Apple EarPods which was highly recommended but then I read that it doesn't fit all people and can sometimes hurt.
I'm considering the previous model to that, the Apple EarBuds that come with the iPhone 4/4S. Picture below.

I just purchased these and I love them. In comparison to the Ear Buds I got with my S3, these seem to be a little clearer and it's reported to me by those I talk to on the phone that I'm louder. I like that they fit so well in my ear. The ones from my S3 seem to work their way out but these Nexus ones stay put. You get two other rubbers to replace the ones that come on it as well. All in all, a good purchase. Plus, I like the " X " on the end of them...goes nicely with my Nexus 4 :good:
...one down side...10.50 shipping fee...not happy about that but it's worth the price...in my opinion.
...but...if you want them, get them now as they sell out quick. I had to wait two months for them to restock.

What do you think of these? The Nexus 4 ones, don't fit me properly, I haven't tried but I know these don't normally.

They look okay to me. The thing I notice between these and the Nexus buds are that the Nexus ones give better sound as they block out noise better than these HTC ones. That being said, some people can't wear the ear buds and have to go with the other style. I'd do online reviews of the brand you are interested in to see what others say. There are many sites that do reviews of these besides forums.
Does anyone know if the SkullCandy S3FXDM earphones work with the Nexus 4? Microphone is important here. They say they are supported by Apple devices so not really sure here.
These are the ones I was looking at below.
Sennheiser
Sennheiser cx 275 s.
Currently i'm using Philips SHE8000 In-Ear Headphones.
Very good fit, three different sizes of earplugs and very good sound. Since they also provide a very good seal when in your ears, you don't need any equalizer, the overall sound-quality is great, and the bass is really banging, without the need for any amplification.

Earphones audio quality?

How is the audio quality with earphones (standard earphones)?
the phone actually doesn't come with any earphones, and i wouldn't expect the motorola ones that you can buy are anything out of the ordinary

Can someone compare the audio quality of the same file on the Moto G to another well known smartphone or mp3 player (like the Sansa Clip), using the same headphones?

Yeah that will be awesome
Also, I'd really appreciate it if someone could try some earphones with the inline mic and controls, maybe an apple pair?

Hey guys, i was wondering the same thing, so i did a test today. I hope it can also help others.
Short story of mine:
I have a more than 3 years old Galaxy S i9000 i want to replace. And after watching the market recent years, i really couldn't justify the prices for a new smartphone, because basically, they all are not far better than my old phone, which is still rocking till this day (even with Kitkat ROM already).
Galaxy S is known for its pristine audio quality thanks to Wolfson audio chip (which real quality can be unleashed with an app called voodoo sound).
So as i found Moto G i was stoked. The price is hot, it has everything i would need, not more not less. The software is very snappy thanks to Google as Motorola's new owner optimizing the heck out of it, battery life is great, it has stock OS, and once again: the price is just crazy good. The last thing i had to check out was the sound quality.
So i went to a local shop with a Moto G 8GB. I brought my Galaxy S, and my trusted in ear monitor: Ultimate Ears triple fi 10 pro. Those earphones are legit. (Before somebody asks, why i would give so much money for earbuds, but not for phone: i use them as a monitor on stage as well). So i copied some reference tracks from Galaxy S to Moto G via Bluetooth and compared the sound quality side by side. Genres included: Hard Rock, Jazz, Classical, and Pop.
It was obvious at the first track: (Bombtrack from Rage Against the Machine).
Lot of hiss at Moto G, even at low levels. Then when the band starts rocking, the low frequency just sucks, also it sounds like the mids are just not really there, and the highs are bumped to compensate, which is fatiguing after a short time. Put the earphones back to my Galaxy S, oh God, i know why i love its audio quality.
I remember doing some similar tests with previous models like Galaxy S3, some HTC, etc. Galaxy killed them all, but the difference was never been this obvious. Maybe i'm bit spoiled in this area, and i don't know if it's relevant with cheap earphones, as high quality earphones always reveal the weaknesses.
I guess you just can't have everything at those prices.
Too bad, i guess i'll wait bit more till i say goodbye to my Galaxy S (can't live without it, can't kill it  )
Like i said, if you're set to buy it, try it yourself, maybe it's not that relevant to you. Otherwise you might look somewhere else.

I thought exactly the same (okay maybe I don't have as much insight as yourself  ) when I got mine yesterday and was a little frustrated to say the least, but I think I've found the cause of the issue.
If you go into Settings->Sound->Audio effects then you will find a menu with all sorts of EQ settings for both the built in speaker and wired headphones. By default it is set on the '3D stereo' profile for some reason and it sounds terrible. I switched it to 'Custom' with Surround and Equaliser to off. Equaliser set to Balanced also sounds good depending on the music.
Hope this helps someone,
Bill
Thanks for that info, i'll test it again tomorrow then..

i realy like to listen to music on my phone so i really hope the sound is not to bad on moto g because i will buy it soon.. i hope other people will share their experience.
Well, this led me to a try:
I recorded the same song played on PC internal digitally (loop drivers) and once hooked the MotoG to my RME equipment, which has an astounding quality. Both spectral analysis' looked very much the same, so I think the DAC of the MotoG isn't that bad.
[edit]
added another analysis, somewhat more noise though

this is absolutley correct.
I had an HTC One, which sounded worse than the Moto G. Nothing wrong with the audio output + it's got an equalizer to fiddle to one's own needs.
Tested with my old but good Shure headphones.
Sounds like the EQ is messing things up. We will have to wait until all the people who ordered the phone come flooding in here to discuss it and we can come to a consensus.
Has anyone tried ViPER4Android on rooted moto g?
i'm using it on my current phone, it's a great software.to enhance music quality.
I for one am not impressed with the audio quality on the Moto G. It sound mushy and not clear at all. And yes I have been through the audio settings and tried a few different settings and tried Viper4Android.
Reading the responses above I'm starting to feel like my unit is somehow damaged.
