[Q] Hardware Key Backlight Settings - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My GS2 had a charging port problem so I pulled a spare Nexus S 4G out of my desk, flashed a CM10.1 nightly and have been happy ever since.
I have one thing I would like to change.
I understand that I can't modify the brightness of the hardware key backlight. Can I change them so that they stay on the whole time the screen is on? Once they turn off, I can't see the buttons at all, even indoors.

Yes, disable BLD in Settings > Advanced settings.

That did the trick. Thanks.
It was about the only thing I didn't try was moving that slider. I thought it would just decrease the time the backlight stayed on.

There appears to be a certain brightness number below which the MT4G simply turns off the backlight. I experienced that when fiddling around with AdjBrightness, so beware. It's just a quirk of the way the software and hardware interact.
Yeah I've experienced this too. Right around the lowest 25% does it turn the backlight completely off.

Let me guess, you running miui. If you are, I'm pretty sure its a known issue.
In fact by playing with juicedefender, I had those experience before. When set juicedefender-->advanced mode-->brightness to a certain level, then put brightness in CM7.1 to lowest brightness, it will turn off screen. Play around with the settings, and find a perfect level for brightness.
thnx
thank you guys your feedback really helped me understand that i am not going crazy, btw this is happening in CM 7.1

A couple CM10 related questions

Hi all. Currently running the 10.25 nightly, and I have noticed a couple strange bugs. I would have posted in the big CM10 question thread, but it seems sort of dead at this point.
First, when I turn the screen on when the phone is locked, it starts off dim for a couple seconds and then goes to the correct brightness. Not a huge problem, but definitely annoying.
Second, when scrolling through tabs or windows, and sometimes swiping up and down, I see flashses on the screen of what looks like code or the matrix or something. This is especially pronounced when using Handcent, where whenever I push a key I see the keyboard flash on the screen above the normal keyboard, making scrolling through messages and the message list quite annoying.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Are you using auto brightness?
And, is the second thing you are talking about screen tearing?
Are you using a custom kernel or stock

I'm mostly a Sense guy. But the AOSP base ROMs I've tried all do this. When you turn the screen on, it kinda "fades in" instead of turning on right away to the set brightness (this is with auto brightness turned off). Seems completely intentional, and I personally couldn't find a way to turn it off (as I don't like it either).

Yes I am using auto brightness. I'm using the custom kernel that comes with CM10. It's sort of like screen tearing, but it's more of a flicker in the background and is not always noticeable. Much more obvious in Handcent, though that might be a separate issue since it's the keyboard flashing in the background.

App for locking the screen brightness?

Hashcode and twa_priv both have great ROM's out now, that work wonders with the battery drain in standby. One of my kids gets -15 or less drain when in deep sleep now. Amazing.
But my other daughter, hers keeps spiking up over -120 and higher while using the same rom. I saw that the screen brightness cant be set to 100 or the screen doesn't fully shut off, and that is exactly what is happening. I can still see a dim backlight sometimes when turned off.
I keep changing it to a lower setting, and then she gets great battery life for a while, then something is changing the screen brightness back to 100. She isnt doing it, because I grounded her from it for a couple days, and it still did it when she wasn't even playing. So I wiped everything, clean installed the 01/08 rom fresh today, and it still does it.
Is there an app that will lock the brightness for me? I cant seem to find one.
Thanks!
I had that same issue on my KF repeatedly and found that it was from build.prop changes. Switched to Paranoid Android and the in notification brightness slider has been perfect and the screen off/on issue never came back.

Cool, thanks for the tip!
Once I studied this Kindle closer, you could see the screen backlight come on for a few seconds, then back to sleep, then back on, and back to sleep. A clean install of the latest rom from twa_priv seems to have fixed the problem, he reverted some kernal changes that were causing problems for some users.
Funny that you are in Eustis, I live there and in Mt. Dora for a while, back around 1988 to maybe 1993. I am in Ocala now.

[Q] Capacitive button always-on backlighting?

Hi, I have a Samsung Infuse that I have set up with https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=name.kunes.android.launcher.activity&hl=en for my elderly Mom who has trouble with overly technical things.
Anyways, I flash CyanogenMOD as the sub ROM.
I'm wondering, have there been any advancements in the capacitive button backlighting lately? Last time I refreshed her phone, it was still only working with the stupidness where the always-on mod worked, but the lights would not turn on until you pressed a button first. Then the light would come on and stay on until the phone was put back to sleep again.
I hate this, she hates this. Has this mod been improved lately?
As far as cyanogemod goes, only cm10.2 has duration control for the backlight on the capacitive buttons. Cm11 will have a button section on the next build whenever that will make it out.

Thanks. But does it work the way I'm asking about? Such as the moment you bring the phone out of sleep, the capacitive buttons light up immediately. Without you needing to touch the buttons first.
And then stay on until phone is turned off again.
Anyone?!

Have you tried going into Settings/Buttons and messing with the backlights settings or go to Settings/Advanced and got to the sensors tab and enable or disable the settings under touch keys
Yes that worked. Thanks a lot buddy!
