[Q] Rooting Newbie, I Have Some Questions About My Inspire 4G - HTC Inspire 4G

I have never rooted anything, but I finally got the courage to give it a try. I had downloaded the AAHK and was following the Effen manual when I began searching xda for some answers to questions when I ran across this thread that reported: "AAHK is retired. Root by unlocking the boot loader, flashing a recovery from fast boot, and flashing su or a rooted ROM from there."
As a noob, my question is, how do I do this? I have been to htcdev.com, but my Inspire is not listed under the supported devices (although the Desire HD is listed). Since AAHK is down, has there been a how-to put together to unlock the bootloader and do the things listed in the quote above?
My ultimate goal here is to be able to fix my slow locking gps. I found this solution, but I will need to replace a script. Will unlocking the bootloader and installing a rooted ROM allow me to do this? There may be a better solution for fixing the gps (since the fix I found is from 2011) by now, but I haven't found it.
Sorry for my "newbiness," and thanks for any help you can provide!

This might not answer your question but I figured I'd reply with my knowledge. YEP, AAHK is retired and the only way I know of is a thread created by glevitan. Look around for it,visit Google sometime...bananagranola might be able to help you more as he's more experienced with bootloader unlock..What exactly are you looking to do with your phone ?

Take a look for AGPS mod or faster fix for GPS and as far as i know, you don't need to unlock bootloader for mods/scripts but once again ask bananagranola

Thank you for the response. Apart from the gps issue, I would like to be able to install custom ROMs and update the OS to Jellybean (if the phone will handle it). I would like to get rid of some of this AT&T bloatware too.
As far as the gps issue, about 30 minutes ago I found another possible fix to try, this time involving removing the gps antenna and cleaning the little metal connectors and bending them out slightly. I did that, and it works great now! I will look into what you suggested.

Alright, than power down your phone than hold power and volume down together til it boots into hboot.. Write down what it says on the top of the screen and post it here...You don't need to be s*off to flash ROMs..s*off is needed when you want to fastboot flash radios...I'm running a jb ROM and all is fine but i used AAHK when it was still available... Take a look in the HTC Desire HD thread as that phone is essentially the same phone, only different frequencies...

I would suggest taking your time and carefully reading through the development section. Start by reading about s-off, root, Roms, etc in that order. Whatever questions you may have about a specific issue, ask your question in that forum. The community will essentially walk you through it. You'll be fine!

Thanks guys, correct me if im wrong, but is this what i would need to do?
1st. run Revolutionary
2nd. run HTC Super Tool for root and sim unlock
3rd. make a nandroid backup
4th. install ICS firmware on Fastboot? (this part i'm not so sure about.. not sure how firmwares work here. -remember the phone is new from box)
5th. Install ICS ROM
Thanks for help!
i would recommend you to do as i did. i read the instructions given in the tutorial, then watched this video (plus others) and got a clue on what to do.
the i finally started, and used both video and tutorial to move forward.
once you got S-off, its easy. you install recovery, and the put youtr prefered ROm at dhe root of your SD-card and then flash it thrue recovery. (use super wipe if needed, the same way)
if you dont how to do anythin, try Youtube, coz they will show you how.

you should not use Fastboot, since it makes it harder for you to launch recovery (Vol down + power)
you should also use USB Debugging (find under settings>power)

The best advice you can get is probably this: wait a little longer for OFFICIAL ICS which will be pushed via the update. Since it will be official, and via the update, it will be delivered ready to go straight from HTC.
Beware: if you start delving into these forums just to get ICS, you are in for a ride of your life. If you are not into this kind of "fun", i would recommend just waiting for official, which is just hours/days away.

Not at all. It's pretty easy:
S-Off/Root
Flash new Firmware
Flash New Rom
Each step has detailed guides and can be accomplished in 20 to 25 minutes each - the firmware only taking 3 minutes. Just make sure you follow directions, carefully. As in, really, very carefully. If you're unsure of something, don't do it.
That's reach, guys......
So many replies and none specific.... Why to bother answering at all???
To get ICS OTA you need to be stock. S-off does not matter, root also.
Has to have a stock recovery and 1.50.401.1 for original or 1.73.401.4 for XE.
Although, if you want to install custom ICS, you have to read Dev section for specific requirements of the ROM of your choice....I read a lot good reviews for almost all of the ICS ROMS.
And here is something to keep in mind:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23427200&postcount=1
Otherwise EddyOS will be really upset...LOL
Have to find a RUU for your particular phone and flush it to bring everything back to original condition (will be un-rooted, but S-off will remain).
Good luck!!!
Keep in mind eddy won't help you if you get stuck he will tell you search or use google lol
That what he did fix my self and posted how here is link

Not sure you're doing anything wrong. As far as I can tell, only Vodafone sensations in the UK have had an OTA update. The rest of us who still have stock ROMs are not-so-patiently waiting.

Bottom line, you can't update to ICS unless someone follows some steps on the forum to either A: Return the RUU to stock or B: Flashes an ICS Rom for you.
He sounds like a smart guy, too bad it didn't workout.
You may have someone in a circle of friends that's familiar with rooting etc. Hit them up to do the labor.

I have a question... my phone is stock the RUU as you've called it is from HTC. I downloaded an app "CID Getter" from Play/Market and it tells me my ROM is 1.45.401.2 which if I'm correct is official. My CID is orang001 then as i scroll down it says main CID HTC_001 so why has this not updated to 1.50.401.1 for example?

Then you are in the wrong place. This is a developers site, you are suppossed to do your homework and read and do some research. A tutorial will probably lead you to a messed bootloader and belive me, that is really painful to deal with.
That thread has all you need to know. Even has a noob guide (the same that in my signature) that will help you out. Try that out and once you know what rooting and downgrading involves, you are ready to go.

As long as you follow instructions in the Hack Kit site and in the effen manual, chances are almost inexistent, thou modifying software always involves risks.
You have you be aware of that. Several thousands of dhd and inspire users have used the kit successfully, so that is your proof that it works flawlessly as long as directions are followed.

Same answer. If you follow instructions you shouldn't have problems. The risk is always latent, you are modifying software, but there are lots of success cases that backup the process.
Its very simple. I did this 4 days ago. Currently on 4.2 AOKP. All you need to do. Unlock your bootloader. Thats easy. Htcdev.com. create an account and follow the directions. This'll unlock bootloader. Then Download that boot.zip. extract the boot.IMG and put it in the fastboot folder. On computer, cd to fast boot folder and type fastboot flash boot boot.img. relock the boot loader. Then run the hack kit. Questions?

Am I missing out on having my devices boot loader unlocked ? When I first tot the inspire 4g I had some difficulties knowing where to start but than I figured out how to root the thing with AAHK. I'm now using a cm10 ROM and honestly I'm curious about this boot loader option. I would assume that by using aahk that I couldn't use htcdev to unlock the bootloader because I might risk brick or some god awful thing...
Ultimately all I wanted to do was be able to use custom roms and vice versa but now that I keep hearing about this bootloader option it makes me curious as to what unlocking it well do for my inspire

S-Off with AAHK is a much better option than S-On boot loader unlock with HTCDEV. With S-On you can only flash ROMs meant for the DHD, meaning no ported ROMs. Also, you need to fast boot flash a boot.IMG separately each time you flash a ROM. Also, you let HTC know and so you lose any warranty you may have. And radios can't be flashed. Look in the Ace Think Tank guide for more information.
You just answered all my questions man, I appreciate it...ill stick to what I know...its a different experience coming from a LG optimus one....

Upon unlocking the screen my phone says "prepairing internal storage" then my network is back up. I have turned off the options that say sleep data connection when screen is locked and the other one that says sleep data connection after long periods of no use/idle.

Doubt it, its never done this when i was using stock rom past few days been using custom roms and it started doing this right away. Thinking maybe i used tool/s intended for the xl to unlock my phone, or its some where in the software thats bugged out cause i did some thing wrong. Although every thing seems to be working fast and cleanly except my cell network shutting off when i lock the screen. Being a noob just hoping some one keys up and tells me how to fix this like flash a diff radio version or some thing.

I tried to flash that kernel with both roms i am using and it errors and won't go through, also the firmware aka hboot is 2.14 i believe on my device for the life of me can't find a download of a hboot for my device. Found a thread stating i need my cid to lookup proper firmware for my device but isn't my cid all 1s now from being unlocked? Any way i saw yet another post that said to turn my data connection off and on then turn data roaming on then back off, followed by a reboot this actually seemed to fix my cell network dropping but!!!.... lol now my wifi won't enable and the wifi is marked with "ERROR" i'm going nuts maybe i screwed all this up by originally not having S-OFF or some thing.
Oh and i tried the fix wifi app recommended here in the forums and the app can't start the wifi just says its stuck.
Do you know how to access your bootloader?
It seems like your guessing with important details.

I'm not sure why Beastmode isn't working for you. Maybe bad download. If you give up then you can upgrade firmware using the OP instructions found here:

ooo says S-ON and it is hboot 2.14.0000
So if i manage to turn S-OFF i should be able to flash beastmode? Not sure why the tool i have didn't work for the S-OFF function.
Beastmode is OK for S On devices. It should fix the problems you mentioned.
It sounds like you have lots of reading to do. In general, you shouldn't rely on tools and one click methods. Know the processes that they are actually performing.

Thread cleaned and let's stay on topic from here thanks guys
No. Contact HTC for a sim card tray. That's exactly what it sounds like. I got mine and never lost connection again. But I do haft a say that u do need a good kernel when it comes viper xl ROM.
Chris B.
While that is true in some cases of signal problems, it isn't in this case. Changing the SIM tray won't stop the problem from happening as this isn't a physical problem. The phone is shutting down the cell connection when it's in sleep mode and is unable to initiate a connection again when it's woken. This is a case of mismatched firmware that's common on every single Sense 5 Android 4.2.2 ROM. The solution is to upgrade to the firmware package (2.15) that was shipped with the Sense 5 update and was supposed to be used in conjunction with the ROM for proper operation. Another option is to flash the Beastmode kernel. Please make sure you're giving the right advice.

Its not a matter of"advice" the sim card tray Is a known issue with the one x. It was a suggestion...not advice. Lol. I figured that hed like to be made aware of the tray issue. I already know Abiut the kernel, and yes that was a fix. Just thought i would share the info!

Yeah ok, but my point was that in this case it's irrelevant because that isn't the cause of the problems. In fairness your first word was "no", in order to disagree with the previous correct solutions that were given.
The SIM tray isn't "exactly what it sounds like" at all. You hadn't considered the fact that the signal is lost during periods where the phone is sleeping. If it was the SIM tray that was the problem the phone would be losing signal at any random time, not confined to sleep periods.
I'm all for sharing fixes and advice, but the fix you mentioned is completely irrelevant to the problem that this thread is discussing. Imagine the OP decides to take your advice instead of the correct advice: he contacts HTC, waits a week or two for a SIM tray, gets it, pops it in, and hey what do you know it's still losing signal during sleep periods. That's a week or two of having to put up with signal losses because someone shared a fix that wasn't relevant to his actual problem. Yes the symptoms are similar (generally speaking), but when you look harder at it the diagnosis is entirely different and therefore the solution is entirely different. I'm not trying to sound harsh, but this is after all a forum dedicated to helping people by giving them the correct fix to their problem.

That seems like a ridiculous distinction to say the least.
Its pretty clear (as timmaaa suggests) that if the problem arises after flashing a Sense 5 ROM, and wasn't present before; then its a result of the Sense 5 sleep function and radio incompatibility (fixed with 2.15 firmware of Beastmode kernel).
So if i have TWRP 2.6 and S-ON is not a issue for flashing beastmode kernel how come it fails during flash?
WinDroid HTC One XL Toolkit 1.1 wants me to flash stock ruu as part of S-OFF process.
Below is what i believe to be the stock rom for the AT&T One X got the link from you guys at XDA
OTA_EVITA_UL_JB_45_S_Cingular_US_3.18.502.6_0.24p.32.09.06_10.130.32.34_release_3061616bcty3drvawwo01k.zip
Oh and what version of beastmode should i be using i have 3.0 and 3.5 reloaded and i can't find any install instructions to tell me if it has its own installer or i can use TWRP
The most important thing I have to say right now is do not run the RUU yet! If you have SuperCID (which I'm guessing you do) you will definitely brick your phone, we don't want that. There's a bug with the jb RUU that causes it to fail halfway through when it sees you have SuperCID, basically SuperCID + s-on + jb RUU = brick. So check your CID first using this fastboot command:
Code:
fastboot oem readied
If it comes back as 11111111 or 22222222 you have SuperCID. Post the result here anyway.
At this point your best and easiest option is just to get s-off so you can update to the 2.15 firmware package. The Beastmode kernel is s-on friendly but plenty of folks have had trouble installing it. There are two s-off methods for our device, Facepalm and Rumrunner. I'd suggest you try the Rumrunner method, it's brand new and I haven't personally tried it because I'm already s-off but it looks like a piece of cake to get done. Facepalm can be a bit tricky. You'll find a thread started by me in our general section for the Rumrunner s-off method. Once you have s-off you can update your firmware and you should have zero issues with Sense 5 ROMs after that. It also means you can run the jb RUU without bricking, SuperCID + s-off + jb RUU = no worries. Plus you no longer need to flash the boot.img from a ROM/kernel with fastboot and you have s-off. There are other advantages to having s-off but those are the main ones.

Do people not bother reading through the thread (at least the last few pages) for things they flash anymore? I do this before flashing just about anything, as it gives a good indicator of what issues others may have had, and the solutions.
This is a somewhat known/common issue. Apparently the solution is to flash Beastmode 2 first, than 3/3.5.
Don't use the Windroid toolkit, as I stated above you'll brick if you RUU, plus you definitely do not need to run an RUU to get s-off. I'm not sure why it's asking you to do that. Those toolkits are nice and easy and all that but in my opinion they're bad news. They allow users to get things done very easily, but the problem is they completely remove the learning aspect of the whole procedure. Trust me, it's better to learn how to do this manually with fastboot and adb, you gain a much better understanding of Android by doing things manually, and the day will come when you need that knowledge to recover from some mishap.

I don't think they do, it's very apparent they don't. I've already given my $0.02 on that situation in this thread so that's all I'm gonna say.

Boot loader and etc

I know this has been asked and answered before but when I google this I get old links and nonexistent exploits. Does infuse have a boot loader? Does it require being rooted and unlocked similiar to an HTC phone ? I'm not new to modifying devices but I could use a Lil insight. How do I go about unlocking bootloader, install a custom recovery and root the infuse? Thanks

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2091900&page=370 go to last post on that page and no you don't need to unlock bootloader that i know of?
rooting wise alot of methods work from installing a pre rooted stock rom to using one click apps and also kingo android root one click softwear
That link is for a ROM. Not an exploit. Lol

Do I need to do any said unlocking or s off this device ?

I would rather issue commands via adb or fastboot. I believe the best way to learn is through manual..rather than a short cut(like super one click..etc)

unlocking this phone would imply from AT&T or rogers not the bootloader i've never heard of anyone doing s-off on a samsung device not trying to sound mean
I know our not being mean. I'm just asking as I have rooted quite a few phones...but all were htcs

before i switched from htc to samsung i was wondering the same things but when i read through the different methods and saw how easy it was to obtain root.....i just said okay and went with it and i just go with what i read when rooting moto and zte and other android phones and if they have a one click method i go straight for that one now
So. Since ur familiar with HTC. Is the process similar?? Like do I have to unlock like u do an htc bootloader..flash a recovery then a rooted ROM?

well not necessarily with HTC or at least the sensation i had to get root with an exploit then get s-off to get a recovery but with the infuse you just get root with whatever method you can then flash a kernel to get a recovery and if you flashed with odin you probably got CWM recovery at the same time as root and flashing roms is basically the same after you get the recovery and the HTC myTouch 4G had a similar root and recovery process as the sensation did

To root, I think the easiest way is to ODIN a rooted image over top the phone (but that wipes your data). Probably the most common way is to use an exploit, via SuperOneClick:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-02NrvxDZYA
To get CWM (if you didn't ODIN one on earlier), all you need to do is flash this in 3e recovery (didn't work for my Rogers phone, probably because it was made for AT&T).
Don't need to worry about unlocking the bootloader (isn't a bootloader to access IIRC), or to S-OFF.
Hope this helps.
I heard super one click doesn't work anymore
