Having recently rooted my SGN10.1, I wanted to start trying out custom roms. However, before doing so, I felt that it is best to ensure that I have proper backup. Being a believer in redundancy, I not only wanted to backup using Titanium Pro, but I also wanted to use my original Mybackup Pro, as well.
Unfortunately, the Mybackup Pro seems to keep crashing when trying to backup data. It will hang on one of the early app program's data file, and then suddenly shut down by itself and reboot. When it comes up from the roboot, the wallpaper is replaced by a black screen. I then need to power down and restart to get the wallpaper back.
The problem does not seem to affect the backup of apps by themselves, just the data. Same issue when backing up apps+data or just data. Apps by themselves backup without a problem.
Initially I thought that it might be related to the particular app where it was crashing, which was the Allplay app. I applied free to the app (and any related files listed), and then the backup failed again on a later app, with the same result.
I uninstalled Mybackup Pro, rebooted, and then re-installed it again, as per the Rerware website recommendation, however the same problem keeps happening.
Is this a root related problem or did I cause another problem somewhere else for which I may be unaware.
Any advise will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
'Bean
I use Carbon back up and like it. You don't have to be rooted.

Thank you for the reply. I was using MyBackup Pro well before rooting and I never had a problem with it. I am trying to determine if perhaps something that I did caused the problem or if it is related to the backup app itself not playing well with the root process from CWM, Odin, etc.
I am not familiar with Carbon. Is that related to Carbonite? Also, will it backup all of the things that Titanium is known to backup? Again, I was looking primarily for redundancy, but I did not anticipate that a well known backup program would encounter a problem.

I have a rooted GNote 10.1 with a stock ROM and I had exactly the same problem with MyBackup Pro (MBP).
I solved it with these steps:
1) I enabled the "Use BusyBox" option in MBP's settings. After that MBP didn't crash anymore, the backup process was really fast (too fast) and reported the successful backup of the apps' data.
Anyway, after checking the backup files I saw that the apps folders were empty (!).
2) I thought that the problem could then be with my tablet not having the BusyBox tools (or not having the right tools). So I downloaded from Google Play the app "BusyBox for Android" (by Stephen (Stericson)) and installed the BusyBox package through the app "smart install" option. No apparent change. Then I re-installed it through the "normal install" option.
Finally, after this second step, I got what seems a full backup. In fact I've checked that the backup size of the MBP AppsMedia_folder (backup of apps' data only) is 110MB whilst the apps' data backup made with Carbon is about the same size (if zipped): 116MB.
I wrote to MBP's developer asking about this problem, but didn't receive a clear answer.
Last words I got from him are:
This is an isolated case, that I am thinking is an environmental issue, this is not a common occurrence we ever get reports about.
I see from the OP that maybe the problem is less uncommon than it's thought to be.
Anyway, apart from MBP I also used Carbon to be sure...
BusyBox works indeed

I can confirm this behaviour. I had troubles with MPB too (FAE F1, Android 4.1.2). After reading above post, I installed BusyBox normally, and got my first backup (apk+data) in ages, however MBP stops after about 4/5th of my apps with the "out of space message", but lets me backup the remaining apps on the same SD without any problems.. I'll contact the developers about this.
Thanks sphere314!

OK, I'm getting ready to buy a backup app...
Which one should I go with? From my testing with the free versions, Titanium doesn't do anything and MBP works. (I'm sure this is user error, Titanium wouldn't get the love it does if it only backed up what I've been able to back up with it.)
Why all the love for Titanium? When I try the free version from the market, all it wants to do is back up "Country, Language, Time Zone" and "Wi-Fi Access Points". Kinda useless. It tells me it read all my app data, but those two options are just settings. I'm not seeing a way to back up any apps at all. The amount of time it spends backing up also indicates it's not doing much.
On the other hand, the version of My Backup that I'm testing does a good job with backing up my apps and restoring them, along with their associated data.
I see Titanium getting all this love, so I KNOW I'm missing something.
What exactly is it that I'm missing?
Did you click "Problems?" and install busybox directly from Titanium first?
Also, when you buy Titanium the hypershell makes restoring apps nice and easy as it automates it completely. I don't know if MyBackupPro does this.

Yep, I did that. From what I've read it downloads it's own busybox and doesn't interfere with the one the rest of the system uses, so I automatically do that each time I install it.
I just had the same problem with TB. I figured it's cause of my A2SD. But, I want and tried the trial of MBP and it works great. I may just buy that one.
I just installed MyBackup and I tried to back up my apps but I get an error that says "Error during Backup: Error opening DB". Anyone know why I'm getting that error?
Edit: Nevermind, got it working.
Yes you got that error message because you were probably connected to you PC via USB and your SD card was mounted so your phone was unable to read it, just so you know!

The donate version of Titanium Backup is awesome! I could not go on without it!
When using Titanium to backup apps will they show up in the market as 'my downloads' once re-installed?
I've used Astro to backup apps and unfortunately, they don't show up in the 'my downloads' when re-installed to the phone after switching over to new ROMs that require complete wipe. So knowing when an update is out for the app is a bit of a hassle.
**Edit**
found a review online that says the downloads will show up in the market with titanium. Might give it a try.
i use sprite backup and it works great!
titanium (free) didn't restore my market links to show up in downloads. using latest version and all of my backed up apps show smiley+M

Yeah, the market links are only available with the donate version. Considering I only use about Four apps on a regular basis I might not be getting the paid and just re-download the apps if I ever do a wipe. Google backs up pretty much everything else and there is a free text backup app available in the market that gets the job done.
Had to get warranty replacement Charge today. Had original since debut. (they didn't have re-furb, wanted to send me one, told them I was leaving town and they gave me bran new one !!)
I am rooted, using EE4dxvodo_DXC. I had used free version of Titanium in the past and deleted several appz. I decided to purchase pro so I could freeze appz this time. Installd free, paid for pro and it installed it. I now open Titanium and it only shows the overview screen. There are no tabs to where I can get to the apps on the phone. I click the change profile button and it says 'functin not available on older Charg ROMS' ??
The free version worked just fine with same Odin on last phone. Is there something I am missing here?
Thanx in advance for any help.

is the sd card the same? I thought TiBu saves settings/data to a folder on the sd card
I have a copy of that folder on my desktop, yes. I restored the sd card to basic stock before turning in the phone, not wanting them to know it had been rooted. That's not the point however:
When you open Titanium, there is a tab where it will display all apps on the phone and give you the option of deleting or freezing them. If you try to freeze them with the free version, it tells you that option is only available with the pro version.
Now when I open Titanium, none of that is accessible. It only gives a single overview page of ram status and such. There is no way to get to any other pages within Titanium to manipulate the appz.
The phone is rooted successfully, Open Garden Wifi tether gets granted superuser permissions and super user gives the option to allow/deny permissions. Titanium doesn't seem to be working and I was wondering if anyone else had run into this issue.
I was even rooted with the same ROM on the old phone ...

is it the most up to date version? could've been a bad download perhaps? I've never heard of that happening with Tibu, paid or free
I have had tibu do that before. But a reboot seem to fix it.
Sent from my VooDoo Gummy Charge
*shrug* ... it ain't workin' that's for sure ... I un-installed tibu and re-installed it; made sure superuser had lastest binary; tibu is getting SU permissions, but no apps list is available in tibu, only an overview page.
Though this is the same ROM I was rooted under on other phone before the swap and it worked fine. Not running any kernel with it just straight forward EE4dxvodo_DXC

I assume you have at ready looked at the menu that comes up when you press the menu button. I think that the functionality that you are looking for is under Filters to select stuff that you want to work with and Batch to actually do stuff like bloat freezing, backups, restores, etc..
Now that people have had the device for a few days, I was hoping their to headstart could help potential switchers and as the SR doesn't have it's own forum yet so I'm asking here.
Newbie alert!!!!
I am wondering how easy it will be to move from the Gs2 to the skyrocket? Basically any recommended ways of moving my apps, texts, pictures, etc to the SdCARD and back from the SdCard to the new phone? Contacts are synced with Google Contacts so no problems there, my main concern is with paid apps, I'd rather not pay for them again.
Can I back up apps via TiBU and restore them on the Skyrocket? Or can I just reinstall them on the new phone?
End of Newbie question!!!!
Paid apps are in your google account as well, you will be able to reinstall all your paid apps through the market (without repaying) by just signing in to your same google account.
The only thing you need to backup is your pictures/music.
Here's what I did to migrate to my Skyrocket from my Captivate:
*Duh Alert* Have your original phone rooted and Titanium Pro installed.
Original Phone
1. Backup APK & Data with Titanium.
2. Locate where backup directory is on your phone. Mine was \sdcard\TitaniumBackup
3. Mount original phone and copy backup directory to your computer.
New Hotness
1. Root that bad boy. Search the site, its here.
2. Install Titanium Pro from market.
3. Back up 1 app, pick something silly. That will create the backup directory.
4. Mount the new hotness and copy your saved directory from your computer to the Skyrocket.
5. Restore apps. I did one at a time cuz I didn't want everything installed on the new phone.
95% of the apps and data restored properly.
Simplistic, yes....but it works. Go forth and multiply.
If you want the smoothest experience on your Skyrocket, do NOT use a backup tool to bring over apps, just reinstall them from the Market.
Copying apps and app date with a tool like Titanium does and WILL cause some issues.

To partially agree with you I tried using MyBackUp Pro and almost everything failed. That's what I deserve for buying that one first back in the day. BUT....Titanium worked great. All of my paid apps were as good as gold.
Plus, if you want your saved data, wouldn't you have to use a backup tool?

If your just trying to backup like game saves then sometimes. A lot of times that data can be backed up by just mounting your sdcard to your computer and copying the files. Some games do save the data in funny locations so you do need (easier) to use something like Titanium, but you are always better off starting from as scratch as possible to avoid issues later.
Moving an app to save you from entering your login info for example, is just a bad idea. Most apps have no real data to backup, simple 2 second settings etc....

TiBu works great, usually, for restoring NON-System apps and their data.
Avoid restoring system apps/data.
Also, if you do happen to run into a problem with a particular restored app, all you need to do is uninstall/reinstall it and then use TiBu to restore the "data only" for that app.
This has always worked for me.
y?
Its basically the same phone, screen tiny bit bigger and it edges r round, and the. 3 faster CPU is not noticeable, and if u don't live in the handful of citys that have lte network what's the point by the time LTE gets fully activated skyrocket will be old phone something way better out, now if u didn't have the gs2 already if say hell ya but since u do wasted money IMO
Just got an N5. My first smartphone although I have an N7. I'm trying to move my user apps and app data from the N7 to the N5 but the process is failing. I can't find good instructions that don't assume you are restoring to the same device or assume you have an SD card you can move between devices. I've checked threads here and can't find anything.
N7 3G (2012), Android 4.2.1 Unlocked, rooted, stock ROM
N5 Android 4.4.2 Unlocked, rooted, stock ROM
Titanium backup is installed on both. N7 does TB backups and syncs to Google drive.
I created a filter on the n7 of just the apps to transfer and did another backup of those and sync'd to Google Drive. I copied the files for the ones I wanted (based on files having a just change date/time) from Google Drive to the N5 and put them in a new directory. I set the new folder as the backup folder in titanium backup. Now when I go to TB on the N5 I can see the apps but they all have a line through them. When I try to batch restore, I get a message that ### elements failed. I turned on allow unknown sources and that didn't make a difference. If I select an app in the list, I have options to uninstall or delete.
I have a feeling it would be easier to use one of the newer apps designed just for apps but I've got this far. I don't know why I can't restore them via TB.
Im not a fan of titanium backup I think its a good app but it has no place anymore in kit kat and it just kills battery and resources... Just my opinion
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
I did something similar with TB and this worked for me.
I strongly suggest you do it in steps. First step is go to Play Store, My Apps, All. Manually install each app fresh. (Don't panic...keep reading). If you didn't get the app from the Play Store, then copy the apk from your N7.
Once you have them all installed (fresh new versions, yay!) now open Titanium and press the middle tab (Backup/Restore). Go down the list and just tap the individual app name...a box pops up..press Restore...box pops up...Press Data Only. Done! Move on down the list, one by one. As you discovered, you can't batch restore this. It takes time, but they'll all work.
Whatever you do...DO NOT restore data to ANY SYSTEM APPS!. We don't need seeing another thread where you rushed and borked something
In fact, before you start, back up your N5..just in case.
Have fun.

Thanks. I ended up using the migrate feature on MyBackup Pro. It was kind of slow but less hassle than looking up 150 apps on the play store and installing them. (I'm an app addict). Some of them failed though so I'll have to do those manually and then I'll try the restore in Titanium. Not touching system apps except I wanted to move my wifi hot spots over with passwords which Titanium can supposedly do.
Wondering if I could have use OTG to back them up and then restore to the new device. Found some threads on it but not sure if it would have worked.
typoHi There,
I'm sorry for such a noob question (???), but I've been researching this for so long and have not figured out how to solve my problem.
I purchased Titanium Backup Pro, to use on my rooted device (Amazon Fire He 10 tablet - I know, it's not really a "true," full-blooded Android tablet - maybe that's why I'm having no luck?). I had my tablet personalized and modified to a place where I was very happy with it, but needed to perform an OS update. I was hoping i could restore all non-system apps, and their data. I made a backup on the external SD card, synched it with Google Drive just to be safe. Performed a reset, updated the tablet, re-rooted it, reinstalled Titanium, and was ready to restore all of my user apps + data. They show in the list that is populated, but are grey with a line through them. When I reinstall them from the Play Store they become restorable again. But... doesn't that defy the point of using a backup program!? A lot of my apps were customized packages too, via Lucky Patcher, etc. I want my versions/data back, not a new replacement
I've tried many, many different settings and suggestions and methods as I've come across them online, but am getting nowhere. I figured it couldn't hurt to ask if someone was very familiar with this app and possibly had some advice.
Thanks!!!
