Hello all -
I am getting my Tilt from AT&T tomorrow and I've been reading like crazy on this forum + wiki in preparation of getting it. Thanks to everyone who has contributed - awesome resource!
I understand the idea of flashing ROMS, unlocking, and general tweaking - I massively hacking/tweak my Tivo, etc. and I'm pretty sure I can get through it. But, I still have one question:
What, exactly, is the advantage of the HTC rom over the AT&T Tilt rom? I have never see the HTC rom but it looks like I can avoid the bloatware and add/tweak to my Tilt to make it similar to the HTC.
So, what exactly is on (or not on) the HTC rom that makes everyone want to switch away from the Tilt rom? What does the HTC rom have that the AT&T rom can't have???
Also: I have noticed some posts about battery life being different with different roms. I assumed that battery life would result from the way the varoius settings/options are set, but maybe I am not getting this.
I have read around on the forum quite a bit and I am understanding most of the nitty gritty details about these issues, but I'm a little unclear on what the problem is with the AT&T rom in the first place!

I get my Tilt Tuesday and am wondering what the "bottom line" is on this as well. It seems by removing bloatware, and installing a few cabs, you pretty much get a Kaiser. Speed and battery life are concerns for me though and if either is poor, I'm pretty comfortable installing a ROM (did it previously on my Wizard). Thanks to all for all the good info and advice. I've read way too much considering I don't even have the phone yet.
Hopefully we'll get an answer. On another forum I've read that you can install cabs to make the Tilt like the HTC, but on another thread I read that the HTC rom is different and better!
I'm not seeing any major disadvantages from using the HTC rom, actually, besides the menu problems which evidently have a fix. So, it might be worth a shot.

custom roms base on htc releases have many advantages:
1- get rid of all junk and restrictions of at&t one
2- reg hacks and fixes that take the most out of your phone
3- many more advantages but if numbered here will take me all night
search in these forum and you get many other reasons to change. For example i bought the tilt and in the same day i unlock it due a hardspl and change the rom to a custom one and beleive i will never come back to at&t stock rom.
I was in your guys shoes too. I read a ton on this forum before I got the phone. Here is my advice having had 2 Tilts, first one I had for a week, then returned it till I got a better deal.
When you first start the phone you go through a quick WM6 setup. After that it will say "Customizing Device" and there will be a progress bar. When this starts reset the phone with the stylus into the small hole at the bottom. That will prevent a lot of the ATT bloatware from loading.
Try that for a week, and if it isn't broke then don't fix it.
That said, there are a lot of HTC apps I love. Keep in mind you don't need a new rom to install them.
I would only try new ROMs if one or more of the following apply:
1) You are having some issues with stability or speed.
2) You need more space on the main memory.
3) You are lazy and want to try some other premade package.
Basically all the roms I tried are not that different then the stock ATT rom without the "Customizations" bloatware install. Plus you can get the phone to the exact same level by installing apps and doing small tweaks. Its not night and day or anything dramatic. However its fun to try new things and tweak the phone, thats one of the reasons I got it.

Pops, thanks for your informative reply. Is there really ANYTHING that the HTC rom can do that couldn't be somehow configured into the AT&T rom? I don't really mind flashing to a new rom but if I can start with the Tilt rom and configure everything I need (even if it takes a while ) that might be fine.
Am I correct in understanding that TouchFlo can work just fine on the AT&T rom? There are mixed messages about that.
Also, does any of this have anything to do with battery life??

It all comes down to preferrences. I have a Tilt, and I have installed just about every ROM available here. I keep going back to HTC oriented ROMS, but there is some drawback in that you have to "tweak" it a bit usually to get full AT&T usability. AT&T ROMS are good for staying "true" to the carrier's mindset, but usually are buggy or slower. Dutty's right now is my fav, but that could change
Battery life is best controlled with 2 applications, both the Kaiser Tweak program, and with a good comm manager program to disable comm when not in use. Or at least move between 2G and 3G connections. 3G is awesome fast, but a hugh battery drain.
Thanks for your input! I played with a Tllt for a while and the AT&T rom might have been slower (I don't know cause I've never seen the HTC!) but it was totally stable as far as I could tell. Is there some specific bugginess that you saw or are you just referring to the general sloppiness of the AT&T bundles, etc.?

No, there is nothing you cannot do with the AT&T rom given enough time and tweaking. Before I got my phone I some how got the impression ROMs where almost like a different animal. I think a better analogy would be comparing them to a house with furniture. The different ROMs are just different styles.
But if you are a real power user, and it sounds like you are, I would just use another ROM and start from there. You will save some time. I'm a fan of the "clean" ROMs that some with almost nothing installed. Then I build them up from there. They are very easy to install if you read the instructions. And it only takes like 10-15 mins max.
Pops - That last comment was interesting. I can totally see the advantage of installing a lite rom or for that matter, a fully loaded Dutty's rom, etc. My concern was that if I did that, I'd actually wind up having to tweak for a while to get things smooth on the Tilt since I wouldn't be using the 'stock' rom. The assumption is the everything would work on day 1 with the stock rom, so I can tweak but I never have to really get things going.
In your experience, if I installed the most recent version of Dutty's Hybrid Kaiser TouchFlo Final (if I'm gonna flash the rom, I might as well load it up) that things would be about as stable/easy as if I spent time customized the AT&T rom?
If there's not too much risk or BS I might just go for it! There is something about keeping the original rom that makes me feel more confident, but it's also fun to tweak on the thing!
Well there are two types of Kaisers right now. The original HTC branded one and the Tilt. They are different in 2 ways. For the Tilt, some roms require you to install a keyboard fix for a minor adjustment. Also you have to configure the AT&T internet settings. It depends on the ROM. Some of the ROMs are already designed for the Tilt.
To answer your question, yes some of these ROMs can have you up and running without any tweaking or adjustments at all. Just read their instructions, it varies for each one.
For me, if I start with a stripped down ROM it takes me about 2 hours or more to install all of my apps and tweaks. For the fully featured ROMs like Dutty's, you can be ready to go in 20-30mins.
I installed the HTC stock ROM on my Tilt for the same reason I install reference drivers for my video card:
1. They are more true to the manufacturer's specifications.
2. There are more frequent and faster updates available.
Number 2 was the most important for me, even though HTC has not released an updated ROM yet...but when they do, I know that I can install it and it will be closer to what I have been using.
I had the Tilt ROM installed for a few weeks before I reverted to the HTC ROM. I also installed the HTC customizations on the Tilt ROM and played with that for a while. I noticed slight differences between the applications like the HTC Home application UI behavour has minor differences. There was also more available memory on the HTC ROM from the Tilt ROM even after I cancelled the Tilt customizations from installing.
Oh here is a neat program to help you test different ROMs without losing your contacts, SMS, call history etc.

Just got the Tilt last month,and after my initial fear of flashing(and succesfully installing HARDSPL) I've flashed lots of these ROM's too. I however, have to agree with Pops_G, the best solution I've found has been a "clean ROM" and customize it the way I want. I prefer the ATT versions over the monochrome/big clock/UGLY UI that the Kaiser ones have. I've been using Kyphur's Tilt XDA-Live v1.1 and love it. It provides the most storage of ANY of the custom ROMs and has the newest radio also. It shows a significant difference in my area;where the signal borders on weak.

1) When the Tilt comes (today!) I'll play with the AT&T stock ROM for a while and get a feel for it.
2) Then, I'm going to flash Dutty's ROM - it has just about everything and it will give me a chance to look at everything from the Cube to the HTC apps and everything else. In general, I like to strip things out of my systems rather than bloat it out, but this sounds like an easy way to check it all out in one go.
3) Most likely I'll be want to install Tilt XDA Lite once I've had a chance to fool around with the others. With a clean start like that I can install the apps I want and get the thing fast/stable for good.
Sounds like fun! Here I go..

Give yourself some time with each Rom (a few days) to really get a feel for it. Also know that your battery is going to be crap for a couple of weeks until it is properly "conditioned" so don't even include that in your comparison.
Another thing you need to consider what are you looking to gain from using a cooked rom? While it can be nice to have a lot of apps mixed in once there is a new version of an app you have to either flash an updated rom or install the update over the cooked version in which case you are now losing memory as the files in the rom can't really be deleted (only marked as such)...

Technically you can update (or even delete) the apps that are cooked in BUT... you've already paid in storage space for the files. When you upgrade the cooked files are marked as deleted so the files from the cab can overwrite them BUT... the files can't actually be deleted so if you have a 4MB program (like MS Voice Command) cooked in and you get an upgrade then you are actually paying 8MB of storage for the program now.
In short, even though the files are marked as deleted and you phone acts like they are deleted, you can't recover the memory they used if the files are cooked into the Rom. This is the primary reason I'm stripping XDA Live down as close to the undershorts as I can.
Well, the phone came this afternoon and I've been fooling around with it ever since. So far, so good!
I like the AT&T Tilt setup a lot. But, being a long-time geek I just couldn't resist and now I'm flashing Dutty's Tilt Rom. I'll play with that for a while, then maybe think about a long-term setup. It's kind of nice being able to flash the rom as I don't have to worry too much about screwing up the configuration since I can reflash at any time.

I would like to try different ROMs as well, but I would like to be able to go back to ATT Tilt ROM if need be. How can I backup my original ATT ROM, so that I can flash back to it, if I needed to?
Im fairly new to the phone mod game and im the only one of my friends who gives a damn. Needless to say that means ive no one to talk to about this stuff. I recently rooted my Inspire (aahk) works great. Now my phone is insane with speeds like ive never seen. However i was flashing some roms around trying to find the one just right for me, and thought id try CM7 did a full wipe. Being the impulsive person i am i only backed up on my SD and when it told me to do a partition i didnt consider the consequences..... So now im stuck with CM7 (not for me) and i guess ive got to start all over. In trying to download new ROMS it seems that only the ones n the premium section will really change the whole phone. Is there a way i can get back to the ROM it had me on just after rooting? Or am i starting all over? would it be wise to unroot and start over? i really dont like the ADW base of CM7. I had been running HoneySense which was awesome but could barely use my data other than the Market..... Yes i know im long winded but like i stated. Ive got no friends that give a damn about their phones. ANY hints tips advice would be appreciated. And to all of you developers, keep up the good work, i envy your skills.... 2 years ago i could barely check an email, and have been learning as much as possible as quick as possible. Also what is the difference with the nandroid and clockworkmod? can i use apps for both or are they root specific... You can laugh if you like
Your nandroid/cwm backups will backup your entire rom. Forget restoring those if you want to go to a different rom. You need to be rooted if you want to perform these actions, but you already are rooted. If you want to backup your apps then use Titanium backup or My backup root to backup just your apps. Don't backup system stuff. You can flash any of the roms in the development section. You do not need to root again. Always wipe before flashing a new rom. In recovery you select wipe and choose to wipe cache, dalvik cache, data/factory reset, and you can also format system if you want. Don't wipe anything else. Backup your data that you want to save before wiping.

Some of the biggest ?s that is asked a lot when it comes to roms is stability,battery life.And whats the "best" and there is really no "best" one. But for I would recommend NinjaRom. I have been running that for @ least 5months and only had minor issue which was fixed from the support team. Also tried android rev,CoreDroid all good stuff.
But when you do flash its a good idea to do a back up. Which I go through ClockWorkMod (CWM) and select back up and I aslo save each back to my sd card and save it the pc to a folder that I created for my Roms/Tweaks/Add-Ons/etc..

Overall i want to speed up my system (which the "set cpu" app and all overclocking apps confuse me) I have tried all different kinds of settings and the only way i can get a decent result is through wifi. Also batterylife and the more i learn about phones the more i like so the deeper i dive the more intriuged i become... I always want more faster and better.As far as ROMS anything based or similar to CM7 i do not like, before i eber rooted i tried the ADW launcher and am not a fan of the set up. I love the sense roms, but the only ones i can find through cwm are HoneySense which only lets me access my data through the market (no browser, no email, no google, no FB) i installed Leedroid last night and its ok but the specs of Honey Wonder look awesome. I cant find it on cwm and i cant seem to gert it from my computer to my phone. Im about to try and put my SD into the cpu and do it that way. When i backup my Apps should i backup my data for them as well? ANd then can i restore them over any rom? or do i go back and restore them from the market, can i save my home screens to restore the way i like them or do i have to do it manually any time? Im sorry if im overloading with questons but as i stated previously none of my friends give a damn about any of this stuff, except one and he kniows about a quarter of what i know. Hes wanting to root his LG OPtimus C but i told him to wait till i learn more about it, also i dont know if there is a root for it. Any other tips and advice are always welcomed appreciated and thanked... Again thanks guys.. One more. Why cant i seem to download anything from my XDA Premium App? that would make my life much easier
wow that was a mouthful, you should be able to download from xda but if your having trouble try-menu-browser also your not limited to only inspire roms the DHD is almost the same phone and is global and non-branded (INSPIRE 4G-AT&T) so check out some of these.

Ok.... Where to start... You can back up your apps with data. I restore those because for like any programs such as browsers or any games I want to restore the settings and bookmarks, passwords, etc. Before I restore in a new rom I go through the checked programs that are supposed to be restored, Apps with data in Titanium Backup Pro, and make sure I am only restoring "my" apps. I have often found that TB likes to also backup HTC Sense, etc. I do not want to restore any system apps since this would more than likely cause a problem with the new rom.
As far as overclocking is concerned, a lot of the newer versions of roms do not use SetCPU anymore. They use the Virtuous overclocking daemon script. This works much faster than SetCPU. Using SetCPU with these roms will disable the daemon. the information on the kernel and the overclocking daemon is usually listed in the first post of the rom thread. You can install Sybergunne's Daemon Controller app if it is not already installed to easily change the settings. Overclock carefully. Every phone is different and not all can go as high as others. Some may run stable at 1.6 GHz and others are only stable at 1.1 GHz.
If you are looking for faster data speeds, then that is already cooked into the roms by the developers, although there may always be some tweaking that can be performed. Speed for data is very subjective, because it really depends on your particular area. Radio's and RIL's make a difference also, but what works for me in my area may not work well for you. It is really a trial and error procedure to find out what works for you.
You are looking for sense roms, so Sense 3.0 and 3.5 are the latest for our phones. Go through the Inspire and Desire HD development threads and read the rom descriptions to see what you like. Almost every DHD rom is made to also work with the Inspire. Links to both sections are posted below. Some rom ideas for you to look at are, Android Revolution HD, Rumrunner, Bindroid, RCMix roms, HoneyWonder roms, Cleardroid, Virtuous Unity, etc., etc. You need to decide which ones you want to try. Ok, that is my mouthful.

The rom comes with kernel but aosp kernels go with aosp (android open source project)=cm7 and sence kernels usually with all sence roms
People sometimes flash alternate kernels than what comes with the rom to experiment and see what the performance behavior is like. ALWAYS make a CWM/Nandroid backup of your rom before you flash any mods or kernels. Usually it does not happen, but sometimes a flashed mod or kernel can mess up your phone so it is good to have a backup in case of problems.
So I've got a 16gig SD and I've had to strip it down because it had 14 gigs of music on it. So after I rooted I took a bunch off. Would it be wise to keep 2 SXS? One I can jam too and another for downloading Rome and flashing? Also I CAN flash CM7 kernels to my Sense roms. Has anyone tried that Beatmod BlissSense. It seems cool but it doesn't seem to want to download. You guys are awesome and have helped me it tremendously. I may not be able to help with your computer problems or anything but if you need any advice on home repair or anything like that Im your guy.

Beatmod BlissSense was awesome. Had some minor bugs for me, GPS signal was a littly nutty and my calls kept dropping. (I reflashed the rom when I found this was happening and the issue seemed to disappear). All in all, it was a great rom but since I'm new to the root thing, the flashing bug caught me and off I went into the xda forums..I'm currently running Android Revolution and of all the roms I've flashed, this is by far my favorite.
What exactly is "freezing" an app mean? I've got an idea I just want to make sure I'm right? Is it wise to delete bloatware apps? Would they come back if I needed to unroot?
Freezing an app is a little like deleting it, but safer. If you delete it, you may find out you have big problems because the system app will not reinstall correctly and you end up reinstalling the rom. With freezing you can take it out but restore it exactly the way it was in the system if things go wrong. If you are backing up your rom like you should in case of problems, then that backup usually takes over a gigabyte of space on your sd card, so it sounds like you definitely need to have another card with more space. You have to be careful what kernel you want to try. If it was written for CM7 it may not work with Sense based roms. Depends how it was coded. You have to research information on the kernel to see if it lists anything specific about proprietary installation. If not, then go ahead and try it. BACKUP YOUR ROM FIRST BEFORE FLASHING.

I have flashed lots of roms this honey wonder will be like my 9th lol but it all depends on you and the flashing it will take time to see what you like. As to speeding up your phone like set cpu @ the time I found useful cause you were able to set profiles for phone like when its sleep mode set it for like low power. And when your using it have a higher mhz etc.. But I did use juice defender as an app which to me it worked very good.
But to me I like Roms that do not take up memory lol
So im downloading some ROMs to my newly dedicated SD Just curius if i eed anything other than the roms on there? I mean CWM and all of that should be not only on my phones memory but also in most roms correct? You guys have been a huge help! Im loving this honeywonder but want to play around soe more. I flashed honey with out the inspire fix if you did I would plug your phone back in go to you sd card and delete it out and reflash.
If you have not made a back up in cwm then do so and it will located in your sd card in the folder clock work and then a sub folder called back ups. I myself save that back on my pc just to have.
The 3g icon I had that and its ok.

Thinking about rooting my phone but I'm not sure if I should.
I bought my phone outside the US, my service provider is in Asia (Taiwan).
My phone is HTC Sensation Z710e.
I want to root because:
- I want to have access to the US Market, not my current countries; I want to access certain apps that aren't available outside the US.
- I want to upgrade to stock ICS when releases are more stable.
- I want to customize the look of my phone with things like CM or MIUI.
- I want to improve battery life (if possible).
I'm scared to root because:
- I don't understand ANY of the "rooting vocabulary" like s-off, kernel, rom, clockwork, radios, etc. Even the "noob" guides confuse me
- I don't want to ruin my phone.
- Because I'm in a different country I'm scared that I won't have service after rooting.
Right now my only experience with Android is using different launchers. I've tried around 10 but prefer GoLauncher because of the themes and widgets. I use my phone a lot and want more out of it. I love ICS! Not in love with Sense anymore.
What do you think I should do? Root or no.

was not everyone in the beginning a noob?
To improve the battery life, you could underclock and undervolt the Cpu.
But this is just possible with another Kernel, like Faux oder Bricked.
S-off -> security off, the security off option allows you to write to the NAND,
a flash memory where the main parts of your phone are saved.
Kernel -> The Base Part of a Rom, includes the Drivers and so on.
Rom -> Like a Windows Version, there are different Roms like different Windows
Versions. A Rom is the whole Android on your phone.
Clockwork recovery -> the Recovery System you can install after Rooting, lets you install you own Roms, Updates etc. With another recovery than the Stock, you cant install OTA Updates, but you can update the same with a .zip file with the clockwork recovery.
Radio.... dont know exactly, something that has to be there for communicating
with the network etc.
So, I would just Root, if you want to use another Rom. There arent as much ways of doing things with rooted phones as with another Rom.

I'm glad you've posted this up as I'm in the same boat. I want to try and get more out of my phone as I have done with my PC. Some of the basic terminology isn't explained in laymans terms on here though (not that I could find anyway!) So thanks for clearing up those bits of information.
As for Rooting your phone. I used the How-To thread in this section and did it pretty easily. Only had a few issues but the guides help you through really well.
I'm now looking at a phone that's rooted, clockworked, S-Off and SuperCID'd but I haven't unlocked it yet.
I'm going to spend the next few days looking through the various threads on here to find out whether there is one preferred ROM that will get my phone running faster and smoother.
Hope you manage to get yours done as easily as I did. It's always worth having a play with these things... Especially if you back it all up so that if it does go wrong, you can just reset it like nothing ever happened.
I say, root! The costum roms from mike are excellent, better battery life etc..

It's easy to do, there's a lot of topics about it. Check noobsproof guide in Sensation Android Development. When you'll aknowledge basics you'll love huge range possibilities, roms, mods etc. And your Sensation will love u too

You can root without getting a new ROM, which is what I recently did. It lets you do things like run setCPU to underclock (and get huge improvement on battery life), use Titanium Backup to remove pre-installed apps, etc.
Just follow steps 1, 2 and 3 on the guide (S-off, install Recovery, Root- takes awhile, but most of the time goes to waiting for the phone to do the work).
good question! im also about to ask this. 1 more question is is the CM 7 alpha for sensation are stable to use?? Planning to try root n put CM. =)
Is their a particular ROM that most people use? I'd like to get a little better battery life and make my Sensation run a bit quicker if possible.
Also, Is their anything around that can make your GPS more accurate and speed up data rates?
The ARHD roms seem to be quite popular including the newest ICS build. Wouldn't hurt to go around and test out a few others to see if they fit your need.
And yes, there are some current hotfixes out there if you are having trouble with your GPS.

Thanks Maverick. I'm not so much having issues with my GPS as wanting to boost it a little.
I use an app for recording my time on race tracks. It records things like the g-forces and the lap times as well as video and audio. The built in GPS is "okay" but I've heard a lot of people us an external GPS as it gives better data times ie. the built-in GPS = 5Hz compared to external GPS = 10Hz. I wondered if their would be some way of boosting the built in one so I don't need three things plugged into the car at once!
Are the ROMs as easy to flash and "un-flash" as the normal big updates I used to do every now and again on my HD2 etc?
Yeah, the Roms are pretty easy to install and remove if you don't like they way they work. As far as boosting the overall performance of the internal GPS.. I don't think there is any way to overclock that part of it. I could be wrong though.
Sounds good. I'll try and unlock it tomorrow and then try and install a rom or two. Looks like I'm going to try out the ARHD Rom first, and have a look at an overclock
I'll have a look around to see if theirs much that can be done to or with the built in GPS. It would be andy to get a bit better performance from it but I guess I can live with it until the next big thing comes along and takes my fancy

I've haven't been on this forum for long.
I think you should definitively root. It takes almost no time at all to go through the noob guide and then in a couple of hours, if you really want to know about things like S-OFF, kernels, radios etc. you can check out the documentation online.
I've owned a HTC Desire before and I rooted that as well and flashed LeeDroid's custom ROM for the Desire. Now a friend is using the phone and she's most happy with it. It's a lot faster than the stock ROM for the Desire.
Right now I'm playing with an HTC Sesation. I've also been reticent on rooting it. The guide on the forum seemed a bit complicated and I didn't have the patience to go through every step, but it turned out to be a lot faster than I thought. The tool from Revolutionary disables the security and installs the bootloader and recovery with just one click. Than you would just flash any custom ROM, as they are all rooted and there you go.

First off: with Sense or without Sense does make a noticable difference because launchers and widgets differ a lot in battery usage.
With Sense:
In my case the unexpected winner of that comparison still is ARHD 5.0.2 with the new firmware flashed. It out-lives any other Sensation ROM by more than 40%.
Without Sense:
The differences were minimal.
If you don't want the risks of ICS which is still beta and comes with problems for many, MIUI.us was second best with the appropriate kernel. Since it's been more than two weeks since I tested MIUI and that one isn't stable either, I'm unwilling to advise you. You should ask in the thread.
In all of my comparisons I used JuiceDefender.
For battery life comparison you need to stick with a ROM for more than 24h and a few reboots.
I've tried LeeDroid, SensEay, Virtuous, all 3 ARHD, HyperSensation CM7, Miui.us, InsertCOIN.

The main thing that worries me with ROM flashing is stability. I can't be without my phone for a day if I flash it then have problems while i'm at work. Are most of these roms etc stable when they are released? Is it mainly the overclocking and hardware mods that make it unstable?

As an Android n00b, I'm really intrigued by all the custom ROM options that are available for the Sensation, and I've tried a few. However, I keep going back to stock after realizing that some feature that I rely on doesn't work properly (location, MMS, recording video, wifi calling, etc.). After reading numerous threads it occurred to me that I might be getting in on these ROMs while they are still in experimental stages. Is there a way that I can avoid this? What should I be looking for? ROMs labeled 1.0, 2.0, etc.? Is the Sensation just too new of a device to have lots of stable ROMs to choose from where everything works?
Basically I feel lost when I look at the sea of ROMs all claiming to be stable, perfect, and fast. How do I find one that actually is?
Also, I've always been curious about a ROM being available through ROM Manager...does that say anything about its reliability?
There are loads of ROMS available, its mainly a task of looking at a ROM and then reading the spiel in the first 3 or 4 posts, this will usually tell you what the developers opinion of the ROM is, final, beta, 75% etc..

everything works with a few minor issues, No Caller ID on lock screen, HDR photo dont work. Other than that its ace.
Its really suck it and see tbh you have to choose, Sense (yuk in my opinion) or Senseless just make a full backup before you flash anything new, that way if you dont like it you just flash back to the one before.
I have never used rom manager. Some devices actually mess up because of flashing a rom through it. Your best bet is to read, a lot. Go through the thread and see what people are saying about it. If everyone complains about issues, chances are you will have them too. Also, read the changelog to see what has been fixed or what issues the rom has.

The only one you can ever complain about it the stock one that came with the phone. All the others are a gamble that give speed/battery/UI/perfume/... All the custom ROMs have attributes that are good and attributes that are bad. TBH though that's the same as the phone's shipped ROM be it Android, iOS or.... Just a different perception.
All the ICS ROMs are based on leaked phone ROMs and therefore unstable by nature. GB has much more stable ROMs due to its maturity but it's now old hat.
Hey though, if you're on XDA you're looking for change/fun/a challenge though. Otherwise you'd be in the phone shop.

i am also new and this is my first rom flash and i must say i will keep on doing it with every phone i get. this rom is awsome no lag in any games anymore browsing is faster sound is sweet. my wife has the same phone but she scared to let me flash it but she is jelous about mine

Ive updated my firmware to 3.24 and flashed elegancia 2.2.0. Just about everything works, and it has all the perks....best part is streaming your videos straight to smart tv from gallery
I need help, I know this has been posted to what would seem to be death, however I have spent hours reading and just seem to have more questions.
Ultimately here is what I want an inspire 4g running ics. Don't need sense. I have read about several ics roms and there seem to be various things that work or don't some dont support 4g, others the camera doesnt work. I know that ATT is not going to allow up date, therefore I am going to have to flash a new rom. but I am looking for suggestions, I am not a developer, just a guy who uses the bulk of his phones features ie. camera, video, messaging, email, web and data and lastly the phone it self.
So in a new ROM i am looking for:
Camera/video
Messaging
facebook picture intrigation, but assuming i can get from app
all g apps working ie 4.0 dialer, contacts, calendar, messenger, ability to use chrome browser and other 4.0 specific apps
Volume fix for inspire, we all know that it is awful low
slightly better than stock (current) battery life
wifi
bluetooth
I'm probally missing some things, but I want the rom to behave like an ics phone our of box.
Yes, I should just go out and buy a phone with ics or jelly bean on it like the g3 or one, but that is not in the budget, right now.
experience, i have put cm on a sd card and run nook from bootable sd card, that is my the extent of flashing roms that i have experience with.
could someone suggest a rom that is realtively idiot proof in instal that would meet the above requirements.

No worries. From what you mentioned flash a GB rom and skip ICS for a few weeks to a month or two until htc releases their ICS update. Which rom? Heck, blackice, CM 7.2rc3 or any of the previous ones, rd miui - or any gb miui, absolution and the list can go on.

I have to agree with going back to GB. Until HTC releases the source code for ICS things will always be Broken. And just to let you know. Non of the roms will work on 4G/LTE as the inspire is not a 4G capable phone.

Absolution 3.7 will make your socks come off. Absolutely perfect rom and no problems. Not sense but it is what you want I would recommend this rom to everyone and anyone. I've had no problems with this perfect rom the only daily driver I've used. check it out.
