screen flicker on low brightness - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Do you experience screen flicker for your tablet when;-
1) Brightness set low manually. espicially at night !
2) Auto brightness set but flicker comes again when screen brightness is low in dark room.
3) Wifi is turned on and signal is low.
note : i disable the "auto adjust screen power" and provlem still exist on low brighness !!

My friend has the same problem and he can't figure out the reason :/

In GT2 i don't have this problem but with nexus7 yes.

is that individual problem for this tablet or all of galaxy tab 2 7.0 have this problem ??
please what should do ?

i noticed somethings :
1-screen flicker on low brightness under 20 % when i rise it above 20 % it gone !!!
2-it show clear on background color white !!!
3-that happen sometimes not all time and when i Lighter down screen a little by little the problem gone !!!!!!
waiting your answer ..
thanks

Since you are using the official firmware, then we can rule out the possibility of a bad modification from custom firmwares as the cause.
First thing to try usually is to see if the problem still occurs after a fresh factory reset, so do backup your stuff first.
If the problem still exists after a factory reset, then it could very likely be a hardware problem with the LCD backlight & you should send the tablet in for servicing.

the problem almost solve when i use app ( screendim)
www.4shared.com/android/h9Qv3UW8/ScreenDimFull.html
why is that ?!! what do you think ?

I have noticed this same problem with GT2, but no where near as often as with my Nexus 7. Ive also noticed my polarized sunglasses have less impact on the GT2 than Nexus 7 when the device is held in landscape position. I've just gotten used to the flicker I guess, because I rarely notice it anymore.

AW: screen flicker on low brightness
Same problem on my tab below 30% of brightness. I'm using Custom Auto Brightness to solve the problem.

I didn't change anything else in Advcanced preferences.
I use CM10.1.

i use app ( screendim ) like i said about one week and it is very simple and the problem almost gone when i put on low brightness !

Actually these are considered workarounds rather than solutions.
I use my Tab 2 at below 30% brightness as well on stock (albeit rooted) ROM, it works just fine.
If the root cause is likely to be a hardware problem, then you should send it in while the device is still covered under the warranty to replace the LCD.

really that made me crazy !! but after use app ( screendim full ) the problem don't show almost time on low brightness !!
what do you think ? is that wrong to use apps to soleve problem or should take it to SAMSUNG service ..because it will take week to diagnose problem !!
is there any apps that can make backup to all apps and all settings and all homescreen settings and games saved for restore it if service make data reset for tablet ??

Right, I've tried 4 tabs at my local dealer and everyone had screen flicker on low brightness - more or less. Especially when it's dark it is easy to see. 2 of them showed the screen flicker after a short period of time while the screen was activated. The other 2 tabs showed the screen flicker after about 10-20 minutes. Every tab came out of the box. I think it is caused by a cheap LCD panel.

On my panel screen brightness below 30% is too dark for me. So it doesn't matter for me. So I set the minimum brightness higher via Custom Auto Brightness.

Make a nandroid backup for example.

Interesting, I was wondering which country/region do you all reside in from which you purchased the Galaxy Tab 2 ? This sounds like a batch problem if so many people complain about similar issue.
From where I hail, & based on the local forums, I have never heard of this issue with Galaxy Tab 2 in general until here on XDA Developer forum.
I may not be an expert but from the description of the problem by various members, it seems to be a serious hardware flaw that ought to be replaced under warranty.

if problem stop at this point that okay and it isn't bother me anymore when i use app ( screendim ) ...but i am fraid to developed to more than that !!!
if there is expert tell me will be more than that with screen or not ?

[Q] Super Low Brightness Mode?

Is there a Super Low Brightness Mode on this phone or on the International version? I could have swore there was such a thing for the HTC ONE M8... Thanks in advance.
The closest thing I can think of is the "brightness settings" component of GravityBox (a Xposed Module)... I don't know if they work, as I have never fiddled around with them, but you could always give them a go.
I use the app called night mode to do this as well
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=pt.bbarao.nightmode
I use Lux Auto Brightness (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vito.lux). It's the best automatic backlight adjustment app I've used (I had some problems with running out of memory on my Galaxy Nexus, but no such problems with my M8). It lets you set the backlight so low the screen is almost black.

This app hasn't been working for me. It doesn't change brightness regardless of the light in the room. Yours has been working fine?
Yeah it's been working great for me. Are you using a screen protector? Lux relies heavily on the light sensor on the front of your devices (which on my M8 is seemingly infinitely better than my Galaxy Nexus was). A screen protector can interfere with the amount of light the sensor collects and mess up the very sensitive Lux app.

Am i the only one who has display backlight flickering with my Zenfone 6?

Hi,
i got my Zenfone 6 today, and i really like it, but there is one thing that probably makes me return it...
The display is flickering when it‘s set to really low brightness, i think its the backlight.
I‘m not sure if it's broken or not. So, am i the only one with a flickering display?
Thank you

I had the same situation yesterday, it was on low brightness too.
But only for a few seconds, for now, everything seems fine, even in low brightness.
With adaptive brightness set on or off?
Do you have the latest firmware version WW-16.1210.1904.133?
It doesn‘t matterif adaptive brightness is on or off, it does it as soon as the display lowers its brightness to the 1st 1/4 of the brightness bar...
Ok. Do you have the latest firmware version WW-16.1210.1904.133?

Hi, i have the same problem. Received the phone a week ago and trying to find a solution. I am on the last firmware, tried the dev option about overlay, hard reset and still the same. Going to send it back to Asus for a refund...
I wonder if this is software or hardware related. As of now i can't use it at night with low brightness.
It will probably be a problem for a particular phone, I would recommend that you replace it with a new one.
https://swedroid.se/forum/threads/snabba-fragor-snabba-svar-zenfone-6.165775/page-38#post-2443073
Thanks for the feedback. Called Asus this morning to replace it hopefully.
My Zenfone 6 does the same. If I set the adaptive brightness on the low brightness flickering disappears. I think it's a software related problem because others Zenfone have the same behaviour.
Tried it. No matter the settings it flickers. I found a video that match the problem, weird no one noticed : youtu.be/DN1La8AbZsI
Check at 1.16 min, on the right side, it flickers like that, when the luminosity is low. This is what i see on my screen.
Same here. White backgrounds flicker when brightness set to low. Tried disabling HW overlay, but it didn't help. Phone on the latest firmware WW_16.1210.1904.133.
Anybody letting the techs at Asus know about these problems? I would like to hear about a fix before I buy anything.
I am in touch with Asus France, i have to send back the phone for an exchange as they told me it MAY be a hardware problem.
I linked the thread to them if it can help.
Every zenfone I have had (2 and 3) have had this issue.

I think it's a software issue...if you let the brightness working in auto mode the problem disappears.
It is set in auto mode on my device and still the same. With or without doesn't help sadly.
Hmmm is this international version? The U.S is coming next month. Hopefully this get fix before I'm buying it.

Mine is flickering when brightness is set to low (about 1/4-th of the brightness slider and down) no matter auto or no auto.
Funny how we here in the US complain that so many phones are released in the EU, or India, or China long before they ever appear here....but in reality it could be that we benefit from this practice so that some of these issues can be resolved by others before we have to deal with them.

I hope that when this phone is released in your country, this issue will be solved definitively via software update. The way I see it, this problem isn't a huge problem, fortunately. Actually the screen flickering occours only if the brightness is set to a very low level (e.g. <20%) but, with this setting, the backlight is too dim as well for use even in a dark room (obviously for my taste). Since I use adaptive brightness with default settings, the minimum value the screen brightness reaches is 34% so I never get the problem....

abought screen brightness

hey guys!
my display set to adaptive, and the auto brightness is off,and the level is full bright

So you're saying your auto brightness is off and you have it manually cranked all the way up but the issue is that it randomly dims and then gets bright again, on and off constantly?

It's difficult for me to determine whether it's something intentionally done by the software to limit the screen brightness or a defect. If it's the latter and you can still exchange or at least attempt a warranty swap through a carrier, it maybe something to look worthwhile to look at.
Sent from my SM-N986U using Tapatalk
If you're saying that the Note 20 Ultra isn't as bright as previous Samsung phones I would concur!
I have an S10+ and Note 20 Ultra, and I don't know what brightness "problem" is people talking about. They're almost identical. You know that you can adjust brightness to your taste, even in auto, right? By default is dimmer because of energy saving stuff, but you can move the slider up...
I have a note 10+ I still daily, definitely dimmer than my n20u, but that sounds like software trying to adjust for some reason.
Samsung is buggy, will always be buggy I feel like.

if you use iphone about 5 min its become hote thenn the screen dim
i know its in note 20 ultra as well if you use the phone surf lets say facebook 5 min its become little hot and dim the screen (not much ,little bit) at least with the exinos chip

no man auto brightness is off
try it out! if you in a dark place not alot of light even if the screen on full brightness it still will dim itself abit
but when you go no outside but to room with much more lite the screen will be more strong
its like the auto brightness even when off still doing somthing to keep the screen
It may be to protect your eyes or something but mine does this as well.
Auto Brightness - Off
Manually set brightness to highest point
Then if you go from a dim room to sunlight the screen will brighten up even with auto brightness off so you can see it under sunlight.
Anyone manage to get this issue resolved? When the phone get hot, the screen dim to the extend u cannot see clearly under the bright hot sun. Using Samsung superb chip. Really lots of issue with note 20 ultra. Samsung taking customer for granted now!

Works well on all my phones, but our individual experience with chrome doesn't add much to the fact that Samsung's software might be limiting the user experience, which it is, more so than other manufacturers.
After all, we should be the ones to dictate what we want to use for web browser or any other app and not have to change it because samsung has buggy software managing it's hardware. Other manufacturers have it down, imy currently loving my xperia mark 2 and the way it's optimized.

Sensor next to front cam?

Hi guys,
Noticed a very interesting thing today: suddenly a white light started to pulse next to the front cam every time I was tilting the phone. It was quick 3-4 pulses with strict intervals as if a sensor was working. It didn't pulse when phone was in a fixed position, only when tilting, in all apps.
A reboot fixed this, but I wonder if there is any sensor there that activated because of something? Never experienced this before!
Any thoughts what it can be? Thx.
Sounds like proximity sensor to me.

A glitch with viber thats causing excessive proximity sensor usage. It will eventually burn the pixels around that area like the other post posted today.

Hoe bright is it?
Normally it could blink during SOT and with that duty cycle it will outlast many of the other screen pixels.
Or is there something I'm missing???
Are it's pixels IR?

Even at full brightness because it's flashing, it's duty cycle is less than the surrounding pixels plus it will "flash" by darkening its pixels depending on screen color.
If it has specialized IR emitters I could see that happening maybe; if there's a design or manufacturing flaw.
Because it's flashing visible light it would be hard to use a cam to detect IR... which is how I normally check IR emitters.

Interesting. Maybe it uses IR diodes?
If it doesn't display when it's active maybe that's why some think it's "burnt out"?
Lol, until someone mentioned the flashing circle I never noticed it.

I don't know.
I've read that they replaced all the sensors with the front camera, and that′s one of the battery killer since a few were completely passive like the ambiant light one, that's now active.
When a passive sensor needs no electricity to operate, an active needs to, and the camera can't work passively so it drains battery.
They advised to turn off all the features that use the front camera as a sensor like the auto brightness, smart stay (and also what can use the accelerometer like smart alert and raise to turn on the screen), etc. to avoid the process Android System to take to much battery.

Even passive sensors use some current although it may be in the microamps.
Autobrightness is a trash apk anyway.
Seems highly unlikely that the whole cam be used for these functions if at all.

You know this is most likely a digital circuit; a fixed voltage of an either high or low value... those values are fixed and don't change. Even firmware can't alter that let alone apks. Duty cycle rate/length maybe.
This urban rumor about the proximity sensor causing screen damage has been around since at least 2015, long before OLED screens.
A Google search yielded nothing except this:

My opinions.
There certainly are long standing Samsung issues that span more then one generation of phones. The proximity sensor trashing the screen doesn't appear to exist at all. If anything it conserves screen life.
Auto brightness was always twitchy even on my S4+.
Auto brightness was never truly adaptive... and still isn't. Lol, all it does is give me a headache and waste resources.
The other thing is I always try to avoid using my phones in direct sunlight. Very rarely do I ever go past 65% brightness.
Direct sunlight+high ambient temperature+high power consumption can really overheat a phone fast.
Even worse...
Auto brightness on+charging+sunlight+accidental screen turn on that's not noticed, can fry a phone in a few minutes. Real easy to do in the car... been there.

Real easy to do in the car... been there.

Thanks, i never thought about that so it's a very valuable information.
Just in case if it can be useful :
A few years ago I found an app called Underburn which is a complete new approach about adaptive brightness.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.out386.underburn
Instead of adjusting the screen brightness from the ambient light, it set it according of the amount of white pixels displayed on screen to avoid binding you, and it doesn't care about sunlight.
The more white is displayed, the more it will dim the screen (by reducing the screen brightness, not by applying a filter ; even if there's also a setting for that if its too bright for you even at the minimum level) by the amount of your choosing.
It can play a role to save battery too somehow.

Thank you
I'll take a look at it. I'm running on dark mode but since it's Pie it's not native to all apps like Gmail which burns my eyes out.
*I'm playing with it. It will run on Pie. It takes some time to set up but definitely has potential.
Haven't been able to fairly gauge it's configured battery usage.

Question S22 Ultra bugs (mobile data/display/other)

Just got my phantom black, 12/256 exynos version delivered today, been using it since this morning and I noticed that on mobile data I have little to no connection even though the 5g icon is stable in the Taskbar, as soon as I connect to wifi everything runs normally. I also had the purple glitch when touching the fingerprint sensor but solved it by disabling the dinamic animated lock screen wallpaper and putting in a normal, static one.
Another issue is that the phone locks itself (goes to lock screen) while browsing the apps (just like double tapping on home screen) but not while using any app.
I hope this is just firmware issue since they are shipping all the phones with the same firmware region based but maybe they still need feedback from some carriers (hence the mobile data issue) and also the display glitches I believe are nothing that a firmware update wouldn't fix.
P. S. : in these first few hours I didn't get at 1 hz refresh rate

With my xiaomi 12 pro if the screen brightness is dim it doesn't go to its lowest refresh rate. Increase the screen brightness and see if it goes to 1 hertz
I am having exactly all the same problems as OP with my 12/512 Exynos version. Now wondering if it is hardware or software issue with the screen glitching when using the fingerprint sensor. The glitch only occurs when using 3088x1440 wqhd+ resolution and dynamic animated lock screen. Position of the screen interference is always the same but can differ in size.

Some users have this very strange screen problem...
Some users have this strange screen problem .
Its random and it lasts for 1-2' sec
Anyone else?
I envy those who received their device already, over here they will be delivered next Friday so we have to wait a bit longer. However I don't envy the issues you guys are having, fingers crossed I don't have to return the device shortly after I get it in my hands.

That’s most definitely in need of a screen replacement. That’sa hardware failure. I would think one could get that fixed for free

What's interesting is that the guy reported the problem only when using WQHD+ on youtube. When used in say gallery the problem was not there.
I've found this guy's post with details on our national samsung group

Could this also be a YouTube thing also? Like how Netflix has to certify certain devices in order to use HDR content. Maybe these new 2.0 panels need to have apps updated to work with them.

They forgot to mention one thing. The adaptive refresh rate only works, if your brightness is above 8% or ambient light sensor reads more than 40 lux.
So if you are some like me, with low brightness and low ambient light, get ready for your battery to dissappear as it will be stuck at 120Hz...
on some forums it is mentioned that on Vivis setting for display, the problem does not occur anymore; can you confirm?
anyway, the fact that these artefacts are not displayed when in FHD setting, shows that it is not a display problem, but a software or GPU
I've posted this in a separate thread. I don't think my issue is linked to the screen issues described here. I have a flashing green pixel. Seems like hardware. See the pics.
I have a mountain of problems too, with S22 Ultra black 12/256.
I've got:
Overheating and rebooting in my pocket when doing nothing
Random hanging whilst scrolling down a long list
Intermittent flashing green dots (I think four) across the screen
Horrendous battery life (had it for only 48 hours, but still)
S-Pen sometimes doesn't fire the Air Actions menu when removed (or basically just doesn't notice it's been removed?)
And not really a problem, but after 4 generations it still can't record HDR and 60 frames per second, when in 4k.
This is a huge disappointment, and the fastest tech return ever from me.
