Hello everyone,
A device of mine fell into the hands of someone whom I'd rather it didn't. This person is computer literate enough to try something. I have encrypted my phone, which is running CM10.1 (an android 4.2.1 variant), and have employed a password (not a pin code).
I wonder how secure the encryption function is. From poking around the net, I've learned that if one can obtain access to the phone's system partition, one can grab the password database/hash, desalt it, and run a brute force on it. This is assuming that one can get into the phone and grab that file, which is not possible from recovery at least (mount operations are apparently protected by encryption). My bootloader is unlocked. I wonder how worried I need to be.
Note that I'm not asking for instructions on how to crack through a phone's password screen; I'm merely asking if it would be possible so that I can know how secure my data is. What do you guys think?
Cheers
If you had Enabled USB Debugging then he can easily get access to your Files. He Just needs to pull them on his computer which is very much possible.Or if you had a custom recovery he can create a Nandroid and then get access. But if you dont have a Custom recovery or USB Debugging enabled then it should be hard but not impossible.

Hi, thanks for that.
I flashed ClockWorkMod recovery so that I could flash ROMs to the phone. It's possible to reboot into the recovery menu, but because it's encrypted, there's no way to mount the USB storage and push files to the phone. If USB debugging is disabled, would it suffice to keep CWM on the phone?

OK, a friend of mine's girlfriend's daughter (insert Spaceballs joke) broke the screen on her One S. She wants him to get the data off her phone (likely pictures and whatever else). Does anyone know of a way to do this? The bootloader isn't unlocked, which apparently makes a difference. I've never touched a HTC device before, so I don't know if there are any quirks, but there seem to be.
Few windows programs( Android Manager, Android Commander) will let you access the sd card, and adb commands will do it too if you have usb debugging enable. Look like you are on stock recovery. Is been so long time since I use stock recovery that I do not remember if you can have the "usb mount" in there. When you plug the phone into computer, can you access the sd card?

No, hence the question. No offense, but if it was that easy, I wouldn't have posted this question...
It may not be booting up correctly or something, but without a working screen he can't tell. Or she may have a security code or pattern, which would prevent you from accessing the SD until it's unlocked. But either way, if the phone is booted up, you can't see the SD. And even if the stock recovery has a Mount USB option...well, the screen is busted, so he can't see that option or select it.
The only possibility I can see is if it can be booted into the bootloader, and do an ADB pull for whatever files she wants. But apparently to do an ADB pull (or for ADB to even recognize the device, according to him), the bootloader has to be unlocked first?
Android Manager will let you bypass the security as long as usb debugging is enable. Hard to tell. I had that problem with my friend phone, but he had the usb debugging enable. I wish that I could help you more - I know "that pain" of busted screen. Try that Android Manager. Is free - nothing to loose but time searching for it on xda. I forgot the link.
Hi, I'm a new user and i'm sorry for making this post without even introduce myself, but i'm desperate
I broke my Acer Cloudmobile (S500) screen, making the touchscreen not working.
The device is rooted (i had several problems with my sdcard not mounting in CWM but it worked, it seemed), the USB debug is on and i'm running a stock 4.1.2 JB (so no "adb root").
How can I backup my app data and sms? that's the only folders i can't see from my pc (i tried with several computers, Win8/WinXP/MacOSX10.7)
Thanks for your future replies!
P.S.: if i make any error, let me say i'm not a native speaker, and if you need any other detail or explanation i'm, of course, happy to tell
Maybe try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=969650
But I don't know how you can grant superuser permission for adb. If your phone support otg just connect a usb mouse and backup your data.
Another solution: Make a cwm backup, reboot your phone and pull the backup files from your sdcard with adb. On your computer you can extract contacts and everything.
I hope this is helpful for you!
I was messing with my galaxy core prime (android 4.4.4) using a app to remove system apps that you can't with the stock app manager.. (no reason for crap like smartcard manager, bluetooth, wifi sharing..etc to be running when i haven't authorized such things, seems like security risk imo)
Was also editing the autorun list and messing with Norton applock and phone encryption settings to try to further secure it.
Welp, I f'ed things up because phone crashed and now can't do anything.. can't access home screen, settings, call/txt, nothing. So I booted into the stock bootloader and tried formatting the entire thing including cache..
Didn't fix the problem, can't finish the setup wizard without it crashing, get message saying setup, hangouts, and keyguard stopped working and then my phone bricks and can't do absolutely anything. No backup either.
I have been googling and googling for solutions but everything I read says to either:
-Reformat from bootloader (tried a 100 times)
-Wipe with TWRP or CWM (don't have either and can't access play store)
-Use Kies (won't detect my device since I can't enable MTP)
-ADB sideload twrp or cyanogen (cant, usb debugging probably not enabled since I formatted and no way to enable it since setup of android fails)
Odin can't detect anything either.. probably due to same reason. (Cant enable MTP or usb debugging)
So am I totally screwed? What are my options here?
I noticed the stock bootloader has a option to install from external storage.. can I put my sd card in a phone that does work and download twrp, cyanogenmod, (or ANYTHING else to fix this) to that, then put it back in my bricked phone and re flash it that way? That way I wouldn't need mtp or usb debugging... or won't that work?
Wasted so much time trying to fix this guys, googling and even formatted my pc removing Linux and reinstalling Windows hoping suddenly my pc would detect it.. atleast on linux when I used "adb devices" command it detected my device (trying to sideload anything didn't appear to work though, phone says error about verifying it and tries again and says completed and reboots but no sign of the rom I just supposedly sideloaded anywhere)
removing Linux and installing Window seems to have been a mistake because on windows using "adb devices" returns a blank list.. Tried different cords, ports, kies 2 and 3, reinstalling drivers, disabling firewall..etc but like I said even if I do get adb to detect it, what can I do from there without mtp or debugging?
Sorry for wall of txt, just want to be descriptive as possible so I don't get all replies telling me to try stuff that I've tried 100 times or just flat out won't work for my particular problem because of the above reasons..
will be sincerely grateful to anyone that took the time to read this and try to help me.
I have an s6 that has no functioning screen, visually or touch....I would like to recover some images/files off of it if possible...I have adb installed and tried to get it to connect, but I think it's not working because USB debugging is not enabled on the device..
What steps can I do to recover the data?
Thank you!
Try other apps similar to adb, although I am not sure if they can be used without USB debugging, so look for Recuva and MyJad Android Data Recovery
Dear all,
I do have a tricky question and I know already that this could be suspicious.
Allow me describe the issue.
I have Realme 5 where the user set password (not pin or gesture), but is unable to remember.
Now when phone starts (even before Android boot) it asks for password (not gesture or pin) which the user is unable to repeat.
Easy solution is factory reset, which is fine to be done.
But there is number of photos he wants to safe.
And I'd like to ask if there is a way to do so.
USB Debug is not allowed, therefore my thinking to use ADB is no possible as phone is not visible.
Is there any way to achieve the goal to safe the photos?
Can I make a backup, do factory reset and restore from backup?
Or is there any other chance? Via recovery/custom ROM? I guess not, since USB Debug is not allowed, right?
Thank you for hints or send me PM if you do not wish to discuss it here.
Jindrich
thanks all who checked this out.
I know how "silly" the request is, as this would be solution for any stolen device.
On the other hand, I was thinking about approaches and seems to me there is no way
Since I do not know pwd, I can't use recovery either, although there is sdcard slot, since I'll be asked for pwd before entering recovery (or before installing something via recovery).
I can't use ADB either, due to USB debug not enabled, this is also a dead end...
So I do not see a way how to get access DCIM folder..
