Request for Phone UI - Galaxy Note 10.1 Themes and Apps

Like many people, I like to use the note10.1 in portrait mode( most of the time )
In most of the phone devices, its possible to enable tablet mode by changing build.ro or other ways
However in tablets there is no way that I know of to enable the phone UI
Any developer willing to help with getting phone UI in our note 10.1
This would put the status bar on top and more notifications can be seen.
Thanks in advance
AP
PS: In android 5 the default UI is going to be this phone UI and in Ipad too... So I am not the only person who thinks this UI might actually be better

You meant unlike many..because i bought me a tablet not a phone if i wanted phone ui i would have got one.. also you could try a CM based Rom.. some can be used in phone mode..But ill look into the phone mode on a stock based rom later.. .. and this is in the wrong section.. needs to be in Q&A

Unfortunately there is no phone that has a screen size of 10.1 inch and has pen input
ASOP based have phone UI but then I miss the whole reason of getting galaxy note which is many pen features and TW features.
Thanks for looking into it. Hopefully someone can crack this

The Note 10.1 is using 160 dpi which correspond to tablet UI. If you want phablet or phone UI then change your density to 178 or higher. Install build prop editor in Play Store and change ro.sf.lcd_density from 160 to at least 178. You could try higher values. Then add another property qemu.hw.mainkeys with value 0. Reboot and see if it works.

I think Apex Launcher has a phone UI mode. You can try different launchers on the market until u find one.

Ok so I tried phone and phablet mode but keep getting systemui errors.. I have to look into it some more but for now its not gonna work..

@txtmikhail any updates ?

I love the phablet mode of my nexus much better then the tablet mode. Love the dual notification thing at the top. But with touchwiz on the note it would not be good idea messing with frame work. Will cause more issues then benefits.

Same issue I have wifi only but want to use built in sip stack and phone and contacts to make sip Calls....why don't they allow this.

[Q] Increasing screen real estate (changing DPI) on P3113 stock rooted?

Hey guys,
I'm trying (without luck so far) to change the DPI setting on my tablet so that I can have more screen real estate.
I'm running stock (ICS) rooted on my Galaxy Tab 2 7" - this ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1798283
So far, I've tried:
- Editing build.prop myself to change DPI manually
- Using an app from the Play story
- Following the suggestions in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1826067
(no luck at all, because this app doesn't even include the lcd density slider)
In all cases, I either get no result, or I get a black startup screen. After each method/approach, I restore a clean backup from CWM (so the approaches aren't conflicting with each other).
I can't get anything to work. Any suggestions?
Did you try "Rom Toolbox Lite" from the play store. You need root to use it.
Performance > Build.prop Tweaks > LCD density ... pick what you want > Reboot.
Sorry if you tried that already but that's the easiest way to do it as far as i know.
May be because of stock rom try cm10 from www.teamhacksung.org you will not be disappointed i use it now marvellous !!!

I did indeed try that. Unfortunately, the LCD density simply isn't an option under the Build.prop tweaks menu. I'm guessing that this has something to do with the fact that my build.prop actually contains no reference to LCD density. The normal build.prop entry isn't there. I don't understand the nuts and bolts of this well enough to know why, but somehow, the system is getting its LCD density settings from something other than build.prop.
I've truly read every item in build.prop, and nothing appears to be related to LCD density, even by another name. It just doesn't seem to be in there, which is probably why Rom Toolbox Lite is intelligently removing that particular slider option from my view.

I'm completely open to going to CM10, but I'll tell you my reservation (and maybe you can tell me if I'm just missing something obvious):
I tried two or three of the CM10 roms yesterday. In all cases, when I booted to my homescreen, it was stuck in landscape mode. It wouldn't rotate into portrait, no matter what I did. I spent hours combing through threads, trying to figure out why one of the most basic aspects of being a tablet (the ability to rotate orientations) was not working. I finally came across a solution that required downloading a new launcher APK. I applied the solution, and it worked. But it felt glitchy, and the whole user experience situation was a bit disappointing. It didn't feel smooth, not that their was intense lag, but there was a noticeable UI performance hit (at least in my own subjective opinion).
It IS sort of killing me that I can't get the DPI to something more reasonable though - so I'm a motivated CM10-er. I just can't deal with a tablet that I'll practically never use in landscape, being stuck in landscape.
Have you tried setting/display/rotation and ticked autorotate, include lock screen and 0,90,180,270 degrees

Yep. I think it's actually a known bug.
I have somewhat mixed emotions about eschewing the bloatware of the stock Samsung experience, only to put on a 3rd party launcher after the fact. But that's a philosophical debate best had elsewhere. I think my issue with CM10 or AOSP right now, is that stuff just doesn't seem to work right on the P3113. I could be wrong - in fact, I very well might be wrong. I'm not necessarily as up to date as someone who has owned this tablet for more than 3 days. But in terms of the 10 or so hours I've spent clunking away at it this weekend, it seems like some really obvious stuff is missing. (rotation, etc).

Calm yourself.. hehe..
I think youve got yourself a bit mixed up or Im not understanding you, but the Galaxy TAB IS both portrait and landscape and unlike the Asus Nexux 7, the homescreen can even be landscaped. If your tablet isnt landscaping, goto home screen, bottom right hand corner where the clock is, press the clock and a control panel should come up, make sure "autorotation" is switched ON, in green. Im also sure theres a seting in the Settings menu to make it permanent Landscape, but it looks great in Portrait too for your kindle and KOBO apps and Newspapers.
Just turn it on its side and it rotates landscape.. you can even turn it upside down - samsung logo at the top and it keeps rotating..
Hope that helps

Yeah the OP could try that or if your into your Widgets and Apps and custiomisation.. GO Launcher EX is nice as well and all launchers are free, its just the Skins and the High end apps you gotta pay for.
NightOrchid,
I've been reading that Jelly Bean (4.1.1) is "stuck" in portrait mode & to get landscape you have to install/use an app to get the screen to rotate!? I'm currently on ICS 4.0.4 UEBLH2 P3113 US Ver w/IR blaster, & use the tab strictly in landscape mode.
Anyway, I might check it out when our (USA) JB is leaked.. if it works & is faster & smoother than ICS I'll switch, if not.. :crying: lol

Oh right, then Ive misunderstood it,I havent done alot of reading around on JB and I actually didnt realise that it had that limitation, i thought it was actually something that ASUS had done. Apologies OP., maybe Samsung might change that hopefully, like yourself Phil Im on the same XXBLH2 but for P3110 UK/ If this is the case, I might not consider JB, I like Landscape mode.

The CM10 Rom for JB has a UI patch that will rotate the home screen into tablet mode with no problem and it works for the AOSP Rom. The AOKP Rom for JB has a setting in the ROM Control where you can force table mode. This works beautifully. I also like the Samsung apps and the widgets that make the tablet look more interesting. When the time comes that we can rotate our GT -P3113 stock Rom to tablet mode for the home screen then I will switch back to stock. As of now I am doing my daily with AOSP's new Rom that's running excellent.

I've tried a couple of different launchers....Ii would prefer the tablet mode where the notifications are at the bottom on the right hand side. Just a personal preference. I've owned a couple of tablets and have always did all my (tableting) in landscape mode. Now the whole experience has changed with flipping the tablet back and forth, I'm just not liking it. It's one of those small things that now that the light is shinning on it, it now makes a bigger difference than I thought in the beginning.
I'm just glad to hear I'm not the only one who HATES the idea of using such a capable, conveniently sized device in portrait mode! Let's hope Samsung adds landscape to Touchwiz!?

[Q] Stock Android 4.1.2 rom for p6810 - Removing mobile no signal icon

Since I am only new to the forums I can't post in the Rom dev area.
I just installed Rom from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2481828
I was wondering if anyone knows how to remove the mobile signal icon from the status bar. It's great to have the stock Samsung Android 4.1.2 on my Galaxy Tab 7.7 wifi model, even if it's not perfect.
I have root access, so if it's just a matter of removing an app, i can uninstall it.
Peter
I'm pretty sure the process will involve de/re-compiling etc. Maybe SystemUI.apk. If you have data options in your device settings menu, settings.apk might need to be looked at as well.
Edit: I will take a look at a few things when I return home (away working).
Priority (apart from family) is a P6810 SkyHigh JB kernel, then followed by possible stock ROM mods, tweaks, or maybe a even a SkyHigh custom ROM - just for fun. Maybe not too, supporting a release takes precious time and testing, which I have very little ATM. Kernel release and support will be enough.
But last priority will be looking at (trying) removing any P6800 specific parts from the firmware, providing they don't impact the ROM or 'negative' effect on performance.
Please post any other firmware observations that shouldn't be on our Wi-Fi model.
Thanks.

The following APK can be safely removed : /preload/symlink/system/app/secphone.apk
It will also stop the tablet to try to access any mobile signal... Which cannot be achieved anyway as it is only a wifi version... Thus draining the battery for no reason..

I just installed the new Multi Window version of the Rom, which is great. However, I was wondering how you enable the Split screen mode. The apps all launch in resizable Windows, so you can have many running, I click on the pin button (which somewhere I read might switch modes) but it doesn't seem to work.
Elsewhere, I read that you need to change the DPI of the tablet in the build.prop file? Mine is currently on 160, I think some said 176 might be required to activate the split screen?
Anyone know the answer to this?

Anyways here are the steps.
1)Decompile SystemUI.apk
2)Go to com/android/systemui/statusbar/policy/StatusBarPolicy.smali <---Make a backup of this file before proceeding.
3)Find 'phone_signal_2' and delete the invoke-virtual 'setIcon()' method after it. (The invoke-virtual setIcon() method MAY NOT be immediately after 'phone_signal_2'. There maybe other lines in between. DO NOT delete those.)
4)Repeat Step 3 for EVERY instance of 'phone_signal_2'.
5)Recompile SystemUI.apk(don't forget to delete classes.dex from the 'keep' folder )
6)Push it back to your phone and change permissions to rw-rw-r
7)Reboot & Enjoy the extra status bar space

I have played about, setting the dpi to 176 in build.prop does change it from windowed mode to split screen. However you need to change the default launcher from touchwiz before changing it from 160 to 176, as touchwiz is configured to only work at 160dpi, it crashes on any other dpi. The Samsung keyboard also has the same issue, so switch to google keyboard or SwiftKey before rebooting to bring the dpi into effect.
Also samsung calculator, camera and memo don't work at 176dpi. But if you get the photosphere camera from Android 4.3 from the s4 google edition it works.
I have seen that some have modified touchwiz to work at different dpi settings, so there might be another way to fix the Samsung apps.
If you change the dpi to 184/186, you get phablet mode for notifications, which looks more like the note 8 layout.
I think at different dpi the multi window changes mode. At 160 its like the note 10.1, with resizable Windows. At 176, its more like the note 8.
On a side note 176 dpi also fixed a bug in the aview app in the play store which would crash in portrait mode when launching videos from the Abc iview service.
how do you change this settings?

I changed the dpi by using es explorer from the play store, you can mount /system as read/write and then edit /system/build.prop
You set the lcd density to 176. Save and reboot. But make sure you change your launcher first, otherwise you will have touchwiz crashing. Another app that crashes when not running at 160 dpi is the Samsung task manager. But at 176 dpi, the split screen and windowed modes both work, the little pin in the left corner switches between modes
My next question if anyone knows. The v4 multiwindow systemui.apk, is different from the one in the p6810 rom, that is the one from the p6800 multiwindow post, if i replace my current systemui.apk, will this fix my not having split screen at 160 dpi?

I tried replacing systemui.apk, and this copy crashed, so I went back to the copy that came with the new Rom (the working copy is 4 mb, where as the one in v4 was about 2.5mb).
I tried 156dpi, as a test, and Touch Wiz and Samsung apps work fine at this DPI, they don't crash, but then the split screen bar doesn't show, but the apps launched in windows do seem to snap to the width of the screen at 156dpi. So I think the Touchwiz / Samsung apps have some sort of upper DPI limit coded into them. So, if anyone knows how to increase this to 176dpi, this would make the Rom perfect.
Samsung APK's that would need fixing from what I can see are
- Touchwiz
- Task Manager
- Camera
- Calculator
- Memo
Great news. I tried the modified systemui.apk and after it initially crashed after replacing the 4mb version, I decided to reboot anyway to see if it worked. It does, but better than that it works at 160dpi. Split screen works!
Also you need the double lcd dpi setting in build.prop for the split screen bar to work properly.
So don't worry about the initial crash, swap over. You also get the multi screen layout tool on the system bar. If you get the version from the p6810 stock android 4.1.2 thread it also eliminates the no mobile signal icon. Finally its almost perfect !
The latest Multi-Window ROM is really good.
I did some basic tests and it seems quite good.
Cannot believe Samsung aren't putting together a Jelly Bean ROM for P6810...
Anyway flashed this ROM and tested a few things.
Globally it seems very good.
I have spotted a few cosmetic issues but I guess this is because this ROM was designed for the P6800:
- Mobile Data Icon still there,
- About device/Status, crashes.
One major problem I have though is the fact I cannot mount my 64GB Cruzer Fit (FAT32) with this ROM anymore.
This is quite a show stopper and was wondering if anything could be done about this.
I did some more testing. The modified systemui.apk and the samsung multiwindow can sometimes have a double split screen bar. Both work, but are seperate to each other so when you move one the app snaps to it, but you move the other and it snaps to it.
Not sure the exact trigger, but if you disable multiwindow in settings, you can still launch multiwindow apps using the system bar quick launcher at the bottom of the screen that is in the new modified systemui.apk.
If you go back to the original systemui.apk after using the new one, split screen actually works at 160 dpi. So i am guessing it makes some files that fix the issue at 160 dpi. The only slight issue is the split screen bar is slightly small at 160dpi.
Another bug with the modified systemui.apk is if you hold down the home button the google now quick launch ring appears in the wrong location, off to the side. The original systemui.apk doesn't have this issue. Anyway, just feedback incase someone can fix these bugs.
Feedback on the great ROM
I am now using this ROM on my GT-P6810 and I have to say it is really good with the Kernel from UpInTheAir.
I can now mount an external 64GB CruzerFit USB key. I am getting a strange white square in the menu bar though.
I cannot copy to the key but can read from it.
The work that has been done so far is great though. Thanks to both. How hard will it be to remove any (if possible) non GT-6800 menus, I don't know but it is very usable. I have no idea why Samsung haven't done such thing really. This tab still rocks!
There is one thing I would really love though and that will be to be able to write to external key. When I try do do so the key is unmounted automatically. The OS start writing to it the it is being dismounted...

Reliably set up Phablet UI by changing SystemUI dpi

Hey guys,
I'm using an LCD density of 360 on my Nexus 5 by ending the build.prop, this feels comfortable for my use and I'd like to keep it that way. BUT I sorely miss not having phablet ui. Is there a setting I need to be using to change my SystemUI to a particular dpi to switch everything to Phablet UI while still keeping the overall LCD density to 360? I'm using the "App Settings" module in Xposed and have tried just about everything but can't get the Phablet UI to engage. Any advice would be very much appreciated.
Thanks.

There are 2 things we need to discuss.
1) System UI layout change to Tablet mode or Phablet mode UI. This changes the layout of the Nav Bar, Status bar and Notification area. Google removed this function. There is no way to get it back.
2) Triggered Tablet layout of specific apps. Developers of apps may wish to change the layout of their apps for a tablet. More screen real estate can mean there are better layouts than used for the phone. The only reliable trigger that a developer can use is dpi.
The bigger screen at the same resolution will have a lower dpi than a smaller screen at the same resolution. We can trigger tablet layout in apps by forcing the dpi down system wide using the build.prop. However, different developers will be triggered by different dpi's meaning you may need a dpi so low you cant see it on your small screen before some apps trigger.
You can use the Xposed module named "app settings" to actually change the layout of individual apps to tablet layout. So for example, you can set Chrome to be tablet layout without changing the dpi of the system or tha app itself. That's the only option though. Not all apps have a tablet mode.

For phablet ui, read point 1.
That screenshot is not phablet ui. Its just a lower dpi.
To lower dpi, either do it system wide using build prop or with xposed module "app settings", set dpi for systemui lower. Say maybe 300.

I thought Google only removed TableUI, but PhabletUI still exists. I could be wrong though.

Maybe I don't know. My understanding was there was 1 UI now. Maybe you need to ask someone in PA team
IF it does exist, there's no way to get it... Unless PA can do it.

Change your phablet "Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0"(running Android 4.1.2) to tablet [root

Change your phablet "Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0"(running Android 4.1.2) to tablet [root
Well, I am not good at making flashable zips so I would be writing up the process I used to turn my phablet to tablet,
First of all, I am going to tell you that after this some Samsung's stock apps might not work(including TouchWiz launcher and some other) or might work distorted(including calculator and others) , and play store might not show all apps
In this process, we are going to change LCD density to make the ROM believe that we are using a tablet and it will force tablet ui instead of phablet ui
As I stated above that TouchWiz won't work after this so it is recommended to have other launcher already installed(I use Google experience), so that you might not get stuck on a blank home screen repeatedly giving FC error for TouchWiz,
So after you have got a launcher installed, download any build prop editor(I use ROM toolbox) and open it and search for ro.sf.lcd_density property, you will find 2 with same name, but different values(on 4.1.2),one will have 160 and other will have 240.
Beware, don't change both values, just change 160 value to 140, don't touch 240 one or you will end up having systemUI force close error again and again
When you have done this, just reboot and you will have tabletUI instead of normal phablet ui, you will not have notification bar on top, but will have that on bottom in the side of navigation buttons (you will get them too)
Few changes that will come are:
1. Power+Home key no longer take screenshot, instead you have a soft key for that on navigation bar
2. Settings icon changes a little.
Counting...
Problems:
1. Navigation bar is white instead of normal black one, so notifications won't show up easily (you might get use to it, as I got used to it)
2. You can no longer take screen shot of your notifications
Any other you found? Just tell me, I will add it here
If u got any problem, just reply, I will try to help
I will update this for 4.4.2 soon, as I am not at home for now, on vacations at the moment will update it as I reach home. [UPDATE: Italian firmware update 4.4.2 do not have tablet ui, we can not change is ui to tablet, I don't know why they removed it]
Just to tell you, there are some xposed modules to do this and you can use them too, but they are temporary, this one is permanent, if you factory reset your tab without making any 3rd party launcher a system app then you won't be able to use your tab for the time you don't flash rom again or install a launcher from adb or any other way you can opt to fix it, you can still access notification area, thus also the settings but not anything that can't be opened from there!
I actually got inspired by thinking that there must be some way to get tabletUI instead of normal phabletUI because I like tabletUI personally
If you think of anything that need to be changed here, or needs to be updated, just reply and I will do what's appropriate
Tested on:
1. SM-T211(android v4.1.2), working!
2. SM-T211(android v4.4.2), not working!
You can try and tell me if it works on other variants or not and I will update

As I said, there are some xposed modules which do this but they are temporary, once you factory reset, it will be lost and you will have to redo that, but this is permanent, no matter if you reset, it will be the same way, and one thing that you should keep in mind, TouchWiz home (launcher) will stop working after this, so just make a third party launcher a system app, by just copying the apk to /system/app/

there is no tablet mode in kitkat. So any 4.4.x won't work. I can't stand the white status/nav bar so I don't put the dpi too low. I wonder if phab7 can get around the white status/nav bar.

You'd have to edit SystemUI.apk
