That method is notorious for needing multiple attempts before working. Try it a few more times.
Try using this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1644167 , if still doesnt work try unlocking the bootloader using htcdev.com select onex at&t model then follow the steps carefully and flash custom recovery

That method only works for 1.73 and 1.82 bases. Also, AT&T is blocked on htcdev.

Ok try this ...download the zip file from the thread posted below, unzip it and run the script to unlock your bootloader. Then you will be ready for ROMS ( you will be on atleast 1.82 base ... but thats better than 1.73 I guess )

I appreciate all the help. Another question. Since I'm on 1.09 would that be the reason its not changing my CID to 11111111.
Your not special just more phones with 2.20 were shipped out recently...but that comes with hboot 1.14 .... Which you have to flash boot IMG seperately...what's your softwares number ....if it's 1.73 there's menu one clicks you can use if it'd 1.85 jusys search for it its very easy to find... Idk if 1.85 works with the 2.20 exploits absolutely grim would know a lot more than me

That shouldn't be a problem as far as I know. As yes, having HBOOT 1.09 means you don't need to extract the boot.img and flash it separately.
Yeah im on 1.85. And all i see is one way to root it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237. Thats a lot of directions. Damn almost wish I had 2.20 now.

Hey, I using AT&T Htc One X , 1.85 build firmware, android version 4.0.3, h-boot is 1.09. I am not able to root my phone using the above method. The CID wont change and it shows an error. Is there any way to fix it?
You're using the wrong root method. There is one specific to 1.85. The link is in the resource roll up at the top of the development forum.

boot into fastboot and run the command
"fastboot getvar cid"
if says CWS__001, and not 11111111, and you haven't previously unlocked your bootloader before. You may not be able to root.
Did you take an OTA or flash a ROM?
I bought with an OTA

OK, what's the cid?
I can't get onto the computer right now so I'll check the cid later, the and by the way, and does downgrading the OS to ICS make it able to root? Because the ones I've seen on the Web are all for ICS....
Oh and ecexcursion I checked both of my root checker apps, and they both said that it isn't rooted

My advice would be to read faq before posting such a frequently posted question or at least try searching.
For a guy like you, I'd tell you there was no way even if there was a way.
But there is no way.

As you're with Telstra you will be able to unlock the bootloader on your device through htcdev then install the custom recovery then flash a rom with root as there is currently no root exploit for Jellybean.
As suggested above though do your homework first.

Ok so you went to HTCDEV and unlocked the phone and flashed the unlock code and in your bootloader it says tampered and unlocked?
The reason I ask is the 2.20 method won't even come close to working on 3.18
