I set an encryption password 3 weeks ago and have been using it ever since. Today, I decided to root my device using chainfire's CF-root method through odin. Everything went fine, but after the reboot, it kept saying my password was incorrect. I tried 10x but no luck. I booted into CWM and did a factory reset but following reboot, I'm back to the encryption password request. I tried again and I exceeded the limit and it wiped all my user data. I still can't get passed the encryption request, the tablet just reboots and asks me to try again. Can anyone help? I can't get into my tablet and there is no option that I know of to reset the password. Please help. thank you.

Not really funny but I just did this on my wifes note 10 minutes ago. You find a solution yet. I'm digging away for a solution.:crying:
Update: Went into recovery and did a factory reset. Everything seems fine. Of course I did lose my wifes data.
I accepted my defeat. I flashed stock recovery and booted into it. From there I did a factory/Dalvik/cache wipe and rebooted. Once it rebooted, I was back to a brand new tablet. I lost everything.

Could have been worse I guess.
Yep, could've kept asking for password after the stock flash.... Now that would be a bummer...

Another data point, totally stock Note just tried to encrypt it (lost the encryption after the upgrade to 4.1) and seemed to do its thing fine but wont accept my password which I KNOW is correct. Frak! Going to have to wipe it I guess, pissed to say the least. Wonder if the recent update (don't even know what it was for but it was small) created a problem?
Did you guys managed to find a way to fix this without factory reset.

I've had my Nexus S for a year now and it's been pretty problem free... When it had Gingerbread it had the odd reboot glitch but since ICS it's been solid. I have the bootloader unlocked and had root. I had tried out a couple of custom ROMs and had gone back to stock ICS in anticipation of JB rolling out in July. I got the OTA push of JB in mid July and after a factory refresh have had no problems with the phone until yesterday.
I was typing a text message and my phone rebooted in my hand. It never did complete booting and left me at a prompt that stated "Type password to decrypt storage" and nothing would make this phone boot! Also, since the JB update I no longer had root and Clockwork Recovery no longer worked because I didn't have root... which I wasn't worried about up until now. I had to tether the phone to my laptop reset Recovery using the SDK tools and then wipe everything and reset the phone and reinstall all my apps. Funny thing is I've not been able to find much about this from any of the forums I read frequently... seems there aren't many who have experienced this.
Just wondering if anyone else has run into it...
it's happend for me too. i had to wipe cache and fixed.
Same thing happened to my Nexus S. I have no idea how it came into this "type password to decrypt storage" damned state. I'm trying all passwords and PINs I know but none is working! I'm trying to avoid a factory reset.... Isn't there a way to log in and override this thing, something like forgotten password in emails???
still no solution for this? i've wiped data and cache and still no fix!
I'm facing the same issue: woke up this morning to find my phone asking for a password in order to decrypt storage. Very annoying, since I don't have a very recent backup.
Running CM10.1 nightly 0210 with stock CM kernel. I tried reinstalling CM and wiping cache, but that didn't help. I'll see if I can fix it and and will repost here if/how I fixed it.

If you can boot into bootloader (fastboot), try to flash Google factory image.
untar (unrar/7-zip) the tar file and flash the update zip within. This should wipe everything including system.
Code:
fastboot -w update image-soju-jzo54k.zip

It seems that there is no other solution for this other than a wipe data/factory reset. It's the solution offered in a googleGroups discussion as well. (Can't post links yet, not enough posts...)
Luckily after re-installing ROM and gapps all my apps were restored, and I was able to extract all my pictures and some backups on the sdcard using the mount USB option in CWM. So no big data loss for me.
It's a strange issue though, and should've been solved long ago. First occurrence I found was somewhere in February 2012, that's a year ago!
HELP!
I just had the same thing happen to my phone. Can you please dumb down what you just said for me? The only part I care about is how to recover my pictures. I haven't done the factory reset yet as I've been trying every password I can think of and now see that it is a bug and not something I have done. Anyway, I have 3 gigs of pictures of my 18 month old that I will cry if I lose so if you can help me recover them I would really appreciate it. I have tried hooking my phone up to my computer in it's encrypted state and it does not register. Please explain what you did in simplified terms for me as I have no idea what ROM or CWM means. Thanks!

Hi, desperately in need for your guys help. Thanks.
I have a Samsung S3 running Hyperdrive. I've used company email so the memory was encrypted per company security policy. I decided to flash to a newer version of Hyperdrive yesterday and after flash with TWRP, I found that when turning on it displayed the initial logo and ask for password to boot into the system. The problem is that it does not recognize the password I put in as correct one. I am positive I used the right password. Tried to wipe, format and reinstall 4 times with the same results.
Really frustrated. And please help!
So I'm S-off, Firewater, SuperSU, CWM, stock software, I have not loaded a ROM, fastboot flashed the nohbootimg firmware update, added the HTC browser, and flashed the OTA-killer.
Can I do a Factory reset without it messing something up? I'm having 3 issues that I want to see if a reset will fix, one is my alarm clock keeps turning itself off, another issue is that when I turn the phone on it seems to take a long time to "Prepare Sim card" , and the last issue is that I get a email "login failed" notice which is poping up before the phone starts seeing the data connection.
Thanks

If you are simply stock and rooted... you can factory reset using CWM without any issue.
Worst case scenario if you are backed up...

Since you have not installed a ROM I would think a factory reset would be a good first step. You will probably lose some if the customization you have done, but I wouldn't think you would lose root or anything like that. I believe a reset will just wipe the data partition ( maybe dakvik and cache as well).

Thanks! Just curious, I'm trying to learn as fast as I can , how does CWM reset differ from the the stock one?
And do you think that the CWM reset could help with the issues?

They both typically wipe the same partitions however the stock recover also resets some radio elements which is why you will always see me suggest to someone with radio issues to do a factory reset from stock recovery.

I used the reset in CWM and I'm going through the setup now, I guess we'll see if this helps. Thanks guys!!!
Well the alarm is staying on so far and I'm not getting the email login failure but I think I lost my CWM, guess I'd better reload it.
Interesting, I can't seem to get into my hboot mode? hmmmm
nevermind, I'm a dolt, forgot to turn off fast boot and I Still have CWM but when I select reboot I get a message "Root access possibly lost. Fix?" Anyone know what this could mean? Should I Pick "Yes - Fix Root" . I'd assume so, what the heck lets see what happens. lol
I am stumped! Long story short i have a customers device( i work as an AUTH DEALER for MetroPCS) that had a nasty popup device. One of those imfamous FBI virus asking for money. Completely locked the device. Anyway the customer didnt know gmail and PW so he couldnt master reset. ( i know now he could). I decided to flash the STOCK ROM obtained through Samsung firmware website. I flashed via ODIN. It was a success, no failing at all. The device booted as new phone, apps got optimized and all. BUT the FBI virus was still on the device popping up locking you out, forcing you to remove battery. THIS IS AFTER flashing stock OS directly from the samsung website. So i then decide to master reset thinking the stock ROM would allow me to setup as normal. NOPE. After reset its still requiring the GMAIL and PW to setup the device. I dont understand because the OEM rom was flashed successfully. Yet the FRP lock is still enabled and the device locked out. How do i flash this rom so that it becomes STOCK with no FRP lock??? ANY tips welcome as ive posted in other forums and got no response....:silly::silly::silly:
You should try master reset (wipe partition and wipe cache), then flash a stock ROM via Odin. (Nevermind, I didn't fully read the part you already did that) But to me, this is just another proof that even flashing full ROM via Odin doesn't delete/replace everything. I couldn't get it solved too.

i actually resolved this issue. and yes flashing via ODIN doesnt reset it to default. I used sidesync, got a settings apk, used sidesync to force the device to open samsung apps(like the play store) i then got a file manager and added the apk to the phone storage via a computer.(this was all done while on the google login screen) i then opened the filemanager , installed the settings apk, it took me to phone settings(without having to get past the initial sign in screen) i then did a master reset via phone menu and BOOM, device is stock. Never will i put this much effort into a 50 dollar device again haha but thanks for the response

Wow! Very nice to hear, well done!
So, I changed my password today on my encrypted Note 4 running 6.0.1. Not rooted, everything is stock. After restarting I was able to log in the first time, but now I can't. I've tried so many times that it says I only have 4 more attempts left before the phone is wiped.
What can I do? With enough tries I will get it. I think I made a typo originally.

Boot to stock recovery, then factory reset, it will wipe everything, the password included, but its about your only option without root.
