Android Experts Only - Battery Drain - LG Optimus 3D

Okay, I'm officially sick of battery drain. My first time with this issue was after flashing CM10, my GB build before that gave me the perfect amount of battery life. My phone would last throughout the day on GB. I got sick of the drain on CM10 after a week and flashed GB back to my device. My battery life has been normal the past few months on GB.
Since the official ICS builds were released I've been using ICS. I first flashed V28, battery drain was just like CM10. I flashed GB back and battery went back to normal. The next day official AT&T V30B was released, so I flashed it. Battery drain came back again.
Every single rom above GB has caused battery drain for my device. I've tried every suggested method I could find online. Flashing a different kernel, setting CPU Governor to hotplug, using nstools. I've done everything. I keep my phone in airplane mode, auto-sync is turned off, my brightness is at the lowest setting, gps and location settings are set to off, bluetooth is also off. I've tried charging the battery fully, pulling the battery out for a minute, charging fully again, pulling it again, charge some more, that didn't help at all.
My battery is dropping 10% in 15 minutes and all I have open is the web browser. This never happens on GB, no matter when I flash it. I don't understand what the issue is. I've also fully wiped my device internally and externally. I've spent a couple of hours trying to find an answer but nothing helps. If you can assist me, please take a minute and do so, this is frustrating. Thanks in advance.

Well generally yes. ICS+ drains a lot more battery than GB for a reason. Its running many more system apps and this can put a strain on battery life with the system working that hard "While Sleeping too". If you really cant take the drain.. Order and extended battery online. I suggest checking out the Accessory section. Good luck!

No. You are not. ICS consume much less battery due to the better RAM organization and memory killer. Just in many ROMs there is too much stupid programs and in many KERNELs are not optimized. Moreover people compare all data switched off of GB and the many process running by default in ICS that they can switch off.
The ROM/Kernel combination (by Acura) in my signature give me 48h battery life - the same like the GBs by Acura or Darkroom Team.
So... it is better not to compare STOCK GB with STOCK ICS - you never know the tweaks and running stuff by default. Better compare Developer GB with the SAME developer ICS ROM if you want to claim such a think.

Me too, at least comparing the stock GB with the stock ICS.
There's no use of comparing custom ROMs/kernels anyway.

nope. other way around. you never know what kind of sh*t is on is in STOCK, and you know that custom (developers) ROM are clean form most of them and tweaked for performance and battery. Stock mean ... "tweaked" and filled with bloatware by LG - nothing more.

True about the custom roms but you missed my point about the stock roms.
When someone claims for example that "the new xxx rom for my phone is worse/better than the old yyy rom", you have to ask "under what conditions". And in order to make a reasonable and reliable comparison, you need to compare the old and new stock roms and run the battery benchmarks only on those.
This is exactly what the biggest tech sites and magazines do when comparing the batteries. They run the tests on STOCK conditions/roms with as few apps as possible, apart of the stock apps.
Battery comparison is a delicate business. For example, even if you have the same two phones with the same stock roms, if the one phone receives a weaker 2G/3G or WiFi signal, its battery will finish much faster than the other one.
And if you start adding apps, changing to custom roms, kernels, radios and bootloaders then you have far too many factors in order to make a reliable comparison.

Okay, I tried geenify and bbs on a full charge and experienced no changes. My battery is dying quickly as we speak. My battery went from 81% to 34% in 5 1/2 hours in idle. I don't see how I'm having this issue and everyone else isn't.

"biggest tech sites and magazines" do PAID "comparisons" from A to Z. Do not trust any of them. Better compare best of X with best of Y. Or worse of X with the worse of Y. Like a scientist and like computer overclocker I know what means "Average" values.... there is no such a think. As i said - stock is just made by somebody... that is all... and here the developers are better. Moreover you do not know the current person how install the "Stock" Rom. If he did reset, if he still is on ext3 or on ext4. Does the person did a hard reset or not. Does still keep old baseband by installing the simple BIN or the BIN with baseband or the KDZ (bin+bb). different basebands different signal power etc etc etc... thats why i said BG of X with the ICS of X developer - they use nearly the same tweaks in all Roms with additions.

I had battery drain problem on all roms since GB untill v28b.
I lose about 1-2% during the night with wifi always on..I mean really always ON.[Thats 2% during 8h of sleep, on darkroom v2 i had 35% loss]
During the day my battery can last around 12h-15h..
My other, extended battery 3500mAh makes things a lot easier for gaming. I recharge them during the night and woooo..
V28b is the best rom and you should try flashing kdz with Mobile support tool like this:
http://p92x.acidhazardrom.com/guides/lg_flash_tool.html
There have been problems while flashing bin and fls but you never know, it's different for any user.
The second thing you should do is to erase or freeze any system app that you don't use.
For example I erased adrenalin6,gtalk,lg apps,........... and left only the apps that I really need.
I'm on stock v28b with the stock kernel and I have no problems.
And buy a new battery, maybe that's the problem..They are cheeeeep.

me to i have a very good lif batterie after flashe 28b i sharge it 100% wifi 3or 4 h day blut 1h day ande calls lyck always
for 1 day in GB v21e at 19:00 may batteri is in 20 or 15% CHARGE
in v28b for 1 day at 19:00 may batteri is in 55 or 50% CHARGE

That is too much loss IF what you say is correct that your phone is idle..
My O3D with wifi on and ICS during nighttime goes from 100% to 95% and btw my battery is the original that i bought with the phone back in the summer of 2011.
It doesnt run on stock ROM but it does run on stock kernel for now...
And btw guys forget about magazine tests and such BS because they are just promoters...
Never compare STOCK ROMS with CUSTOM ROMS because custom ROMS will always be better than STOCK, thats the way its meant to be.

I reverted back to GB, factory reset, now I'm flashing V30B one last time, I'll do a factory reset upon starting it up. Let's see if whatever has been broken the last 3 times gets fixed.
UPDATE: I think I got down to the issue. The phone isn't correctly reading the battery. I did a shut down and reboot and it went from 93% to 86% , I then plugged it in, shut it down and reboot again and it read 100%.
I'm done. I'll probably stick with GB til I get a new device.

You missed my point again.
Of course the good tweaked custom roms/kernels etc are far better than any stock roms, and not only in battery life, there's absolutely no question about that.
But when someone claims "the ICS rom has better/worse battery than the GB rom" it's much easier and more reliable to compare the ICS/GB stock roms than the custom roms, because of the much fewer degrees of freedom.
In a nutshell:
-Comparing, e.g., GB 21E stock rom with the ICS 28B stock rom: easy.
-Comparing, e.g., GB 21E custom rom which has different tweaks/kernels etc with an ICS custom rom which has again different tweaks/kernels etc: not so easy.

I'm having the same battery drain problem with mine too. Its driving me crazy to have to charge my phone 2-3 times a day

i got your point but....
lets hypothetically say:
1. Stock ROM GB give 75% of the max possible (best score of LG developers for 2 years developing from v. 10A to 21E). Stock ROM ICS 50% of the max possible (best score of LG developers for first leaked ROM)
2. Custom ROM GB - 99-99-99% of the max possible (best for developers A1, A2, A3). Custom ROM ICS 96-98-99% of the max possible (best for developers A1, A2, A3)
so...witch you think is better to compare - 50 with 75 from the max possible ("max possible" is the key phrase for speed, battery etc.) for LG
or comparing 98 with 99 for each GB or ICS custom... i would compare the last one. if 98 for GB is 16h and 99 for ICS is 14h ... then OK. GB is better. but not by original LG roms.
that is my point.

And another O3D tale...without happy end ;(
1.) Stock GB under heavy use (more then 3 hours of SMS, games & WiFi over the day) = A battery life of 13-19 hours
2.) Stock ICS v30a under minimal use (some SMS, little gaming and WiFi) = A battery life of approx. 10 hours
3.) Stock ICS v30a + ROOT, nearly no use at all over the day, no WiFi, (just 3 SMS) = A battery life of 7 hours.
After 2 hours in my jeans pocket = 68% of battery left
After 7 hours in ma jeans pocket = 8% of battery left (just 3 SMS written)
Then I read "Battery Re-Calibration" is of no use...and did not try it.
Then I read TaskKillers are nearly useless and un-installed "Advanced Task Killer"...didnt help. Re-Installing it didnt help either.
What is goin on here ?

May I suggest to check the CPU VRM (voltage regulator module) setting? I found out why, undervolting the CPU solved my problem. Voltage = ampere due to either linear and/or switchmode voltage regulator design.
EDIT: To clarify why voltage = ampere equations is true; ever wonder why PC motherboard gets away with shoving 100 Amps of power into the CPU without melting the 12V plug? In nutshell, battery trades amperage consumption for voltage shunted by inductor in switchmode VRM - in other word, battery have to work harder on higher CPU voltage settings but takes it easier at idle voltage.

[ROM THINK TANK]---Battery Life---[WIP]

How do we make a rom with the best battery life? In this thread, we will make it.
Food for thought:
Underclocking
*#*#4636#*#* configurations (wcdma, gsm only, what is best)...}These two will help with the "mobile network" process,
lower gprsclass........................................................}that uses so much in the "battery usage" breakdown in settings
undervolting
wifi scan time
2g networks only
Battery-optimized kernel
NO Swap or Ram Hack or CompCache
ETC.
Anyone have ideas.
I will now list the rom with the best battery life (that i've ever tried)
Htcclay's Superfast 1.3.3
Please post the roms you think have best battery life.
I'm going on a vacation and will not have a charger handy at all times. What is best for me??? contributions are welcome (until we make the ultimate rom discussed in this thread.)
gee the forums are slow today... reserved
enomthers official AOSP 1.6..
i am running superbad cm51.2.3gj4 and i get around 24-30 hours on a single charge
I'm running SuperD 1.11 with SetCPU @ 384/128 and get about 4 days on a single charge. 3 days with heavy usage and 6 days without any data transfer (only sms and sometimes phone calls).
This is by far the best ROM for battery life I've used. Haven't tried Superfast 1.3.3.
Is it possible to undervolt G1s or MT3Gs?
jumped to almost every 2.1 rom out, Chromatics 3.5 being the last 1 and all of them are battery hogs. I was tired of it so decided to revert back to 1.6 roms (htc clays super csdi) and must say that Im staying here..Its much faster and the battery life nearly doubles. and also with ADW launcher, it gives you everything you need besides MT. Again battery is amazing on csdi roms. just make sure you turn off modder cpu and turbo mode in supsetup and use setcpu clocked at 128min 528max..

I agree. Battery life with 2.1 roms is terrible compared to 1.6 roms (which last up to 50% longer).
Something doesn't seem right with 2.1 roms. I hope Froyo will be better.
i really like the idea of a battery-optimized rom for g1/32b.
i also made the experience that 1.6 roms are better in terms of battery life than 2.1 based roms. they also are much faster
btw: the best 2.1 based rom for battery is speedtest 1.2
I agree that the 2.1 roms are all terrble, and that something uniform must be wrong with all of them in order to have ALL of them have such bad battery
wow that was horrible... im tired
I'm glad that many of you are interested in a battery-optimized rom. I'll be trying out SuperD today, but its use of swap is detrimental to battery life... I'll have to see.
Any other suggestions?

I remember some of the older 2.1 (Not CM 5 based) roms being not nearly as bad on battery life, like KingKlick's. It wasn't as fast and stable as Cyanogen's, but I remember being able to easily go through a full day and half without needing to charge (with moderate use, and an 8 hour gap of nothing for sleep). Maybe digging some of them up and doing some tests?

Hmmm, well didn't OpenEclair go up to 2.2.1, before Wes joined CyanogenMod? Do we know what the big difference is between those older roms and Cyanogen's implementation and why there's such a drastic battery (and performance) difference? I always thought it was just lack of drivers and Cyanogen did extensive work to various driver projects to get workable drivers. Would his drivers be the cause of poor battery life? I'm grasping at straws here, but that seems like one of the only things it could be to me.

No compcache/swap but with ram hack.
2.1 roms are using a lot more ram then 1.6 roms.
With 1.6 I have about 40 to 50 MB of free ram after using taskiller.
With 2.1 only 20 MB. This is just a guess but whatever is using these 20-30 MB of ram might be partially responsible for the battery drain.
If additional battery drain is the nature of Eclair (which clearly wasn't built with our "old" phones in mind) then Froyo might bring some improvement.

I've noticed the same thing. 2.2 seems to be better... but jubeh's rom quit apps in the background much quicker than the other guy who compiled from source and posted in this forum (his had no wifi tho, but i liked it better because of memory management)... i don't know what the difference was, but i liked the other guy's froyo rom better.
Back on topic, I still think that 1.6 remains the best rom for battery life.

v 1.11 release date : 2010 04 29
Change Log:
-Updated Frameworks and Settings from latest Cyanogenmod Donut tree
-Proxy Settings in Wireless Settings
-WIFI in Airplane mode
-USB Debugging notification option
-5 minute screen timeout option added
-Updated Working Renice script -thanks to merlos
-Media to SD -thanks to merlos
-Exchange Work Email app fixed
-Battery percentage option in SpareParts
-Live Folder FC fixed
-Portrait / Columns bug fixed
-Remove Launcher script – This fixes the battery life.-thanks to merlos
– from terminal type remove_launcher then the one you want to remove nexus or stock
—-EXAMPLE: remove_launcher stock
-Other Crap
Maybe the claim that 1.10.02 has better battery life is because of the "Battery percentage option in SpareParts" Some people think it drains the battery. For users of 1.11 I recommend to disable it (Settings -> Spare Parts -> Battery Status Display)
I would like to add something about RAM hack... Some games don't appear as "3d" but still need that RAM. As I remember running a 3d game on a ROM with the RAM hack would drain your battery horribly fast and make the game horribly laggy. Well some games can handle the lag, but still destroy battery life.

I think the main idea about this thread/rom is to make a rom for the g1 that makes for great battery regardless, so ram hack could be an option that will be disabled for this rom.

I know what the thread's about, silly. But RAM hack has a great chance of just destroying the whole "better battery life" aspect and I don't think there's really a way around that, that's all I was trying to say.
If you do end up making a ROM with crazy good battery life, I'll definitely keep it around for vacations. I made the mistake of going on vacation with a 2.1 ROM - my phone lived for two days out of a week (and that's with charging every chance I got) so I'm all for you. =]

[Q] just got the Nexus S 4G. should i stick with stock?

Hey everyone, i just upgraded to a Nexus S 4G this morning from the ol samsung transform, and i was planning on applying cyanogen but then i messed with the phone a bit, did root and restored a couple of my game apps...it seems to work with very nice speed, only serious issues ive noticed are just with the signal, sensitivity of keyboard, and i havnt had time to see battery life yet..
But i was wondering, since the stock rom is so clean and fast, why are we putting on different roms like cyanogen?
More importantly, as far as kernel, whats the best kernel right now for nexus 4g? im running stock kernel, but naturally and ideally id like even more speed(not sure what id use it for, but always nice), better battery life, and better data signals..
ive been reading about overclocked kernels a little bit and such, so basically im wondering about what you guys would say to all this? should i change rom &/Or kernel? to what? why? does overclocking at 1.4ghz like these kernels say have any negative side effects? things like that.
Thanks for your response!

There are quite a lot of things that can be changed by flashing a custom ROM. Cyanogen is reported to be more responsive than stock android, and a slight improvement on battery life and performance. Also, with other ROMs like MIUI you can completely change the entire GUI basically. The lockscreen becomes changeable by one click in the themes app. I've also noticed a slight improvement in battery life/performance and responsiveness.
Also, with regards to kernels, they add extra features (like voodoo sound, BLN notifications, UV'ing, OC'ing, etc). Now if you're looking to overclock your CPU AND save on battery life then that is probably not going to happen. If you OC the CPU you'll as a result draw more battery power when it reaches it's peak. Hence why I went with the TEUV88 kernel. This kernel undervolts the CPU yet manages to give me the same performance as the stock kernel. It runs extremely nicely and the battery lasts me about 24-30 hours on moderate usage where as before I was getting around 16.
Hope this helps.
Edit:: note that both undervolting and overclocking can be dangerous for any phone. The kernel developers put their kernels through testing though to ensure they are stable enough for most people (I hope anyways). But be aware that it is possible to damage the hardware be either of these methods.
yeah im looking at more undervolting for battery life cause current performance seems great for me as of this point. but i mean cyanogenmod doesnt change much since its built on gingerbread, its just slightly more customized, but on the actual performance side, it is a slight increase? so whats the best kernel for undervolting and still getting stock performance or more? im guessing its the one u just mentioned? cause i saw a voodoo kernel or something on main dev page and itwas undervolted and OCed to 1.4 i think...idk.
Yeah you might be talking about the matr1x kernel. It ocs to 1.44 and is uved also. Plus has voodoo sound, bln and bld. Some people have issues with cm7 and some don't. I really don't like the look of miui so I can't say for it. But I use decks 1.3d with zero issues and matr1x kernel with zero issues along with heavy use 4+ hrs screen time in over 12hrs. Personally running 1.44 your phone will prolly lock up but I run 1.2 non stop no freezes or lockups or reboots. Try them and see qhich ones fit you and what you like.

I'm still on stock with mine and honestly, I don't need anything else... i get 12-15 hours of moderate use and i don't really know what lag is because i never experience it with my phone.
The above posters are correct in everyway. I mean it definitely comes down to preference. I was averaging about 13-15h on my stock kernel/rom but my phone would be basically completely dead.
I switched to TEUV88-rammstein2 (Trinity Undervolted rom). It has Voodoo sound, BLN (backlight notification), and with todays update it has touchwake mod. So as you can see my phone lasted 15h (still with 35% battery left) with 3h of screen on, and 45m of audio streaming, and lots of texting.

[Q] Stock battery life compared to custom roms

Hello,
i'm new on the Nexus S. I had a Milestone and tried pretty much every custom rom, as the Milestone stock rom was slow, unstable and outdated.
I read many times "great battery life" within the description of Nexus S custom roms (e.g. Codename).
BUT, is it better than the stock-kernel battery-life? And how much better (guess)?
I ask, because most of the Roms are overclocked and perhaps the "great battery life" is relative to those speed-optimized roms.
For me the speed of the stock rom is totally okay and it seems totally stable. I would only "custom-ize" it, if the battery life would be (significant) better – else: "Never change a running system!"
AK
p.s. Links are welcome, as i didn't find any comparison like this.
I have found stock GB rom was a battery hog. I tried a few roms but loved that CNA will pull all your apps from the market for you(I didn't have to download them all manually)
With a custom rom you can change more settings, you can change governors, you can change the cpu speeds and voltage. With deep idle sleep working your phone sips power when in your pocket. I like the Air Kernel,3.x with the scary setting, seems to use lower cpu frequencies more often.
you can find roms that are stripped down to next to nothing, these should give you better battery life then stock, to fully loaded roms that most likely will not give you better battery life.
I have my cpu set to 200 min and 1400 max running air kernel with the scary governor. scored around 2500 on Quadrant and battery last pretty good as when I just have the screen on, not doing much the cpu is running 200Mhz and the phone goes in to deep sleep right away.
try CPUspy and cool tool, CPUspy lets you see the states the cpu is using for a given time and cool tool can display cpu/power details in the top bar.
Through my ROM testing with ICS, most ROMs give very comparable battery life. Battery life relies very little on the ROM itself assuming there is no wakelock or similar issue which is because of the ROM, which in a good ROM there won't be. There may be some settings which are added or changed that have some effect, but likely nothing very major, especially in my experience.
Normally the bloatware is what drains battery with unused apps opening in the background.
Custom ROMs omit and give the option of certain bloatware.
Also some ROMs have great idle compared to stock.
But overall if u control ur mobile data, wifi, gps and sync then u can better or great battery life on any ROM just as long as its not a newer ROM that is still testing. And most custom ROMs have the pull down notifications that make it easier to control all of them.
I personally use SLIM ICS and its comes simple enough that u customize it.

[Q] Best rom + Kernel for battery life??

Hey, Just wondering what would you guys say is the best rom for + kernel for battery life that also isn't stupidly slow.. Oh and by battery life i don't mean like upkeep time i mean like basing it on screen on time like what roms can get 4+hours screen on time?
Cheers
stock rom 4.04
Oh and what kernel is better for Rascream rom Trinity or Matrix cause i don't really know much about rascream as i just started using it.
I'm able to squeeze over four hours of screen on time from most ROMs providing I don't reboot and minimise my modem usage. I'm currently using Pete Alfonso's Gingerbread kernel and Blandriid 2.3.7.
But I keep trying alternatives...
Yeah Atm i'm using latest Rascream with TEUV kernel and not sure atm but battery seems okay?
The biggest battery eater is the screen so try brainmaster's black cm9. It's about the only thing you can do apart from obviously keeping your screen brightness at minimum is put your phone in airplane mode when feasible. Nothing else will make much difference.
For GB i have to say, Oxygen 2.3.2 with Matr1x 11.0
As for ICS, i've yet to come across one, I do, however have fond memories of aosp+
To supplement bedalus' post: to base battery life on kernel+rom combination alone does not tell much of a story. I got the most out of my battery when I - used a pure black and static wallpaper, turned off auto brightness and manually tuned down to 10%-ish, kept apps and processes at a minimum (reduced app drawer to a single page, mostly stock). To reiterate, kernel+rom alone give few tangible differences when comparing battery life, from personal experience.
I use Matrix Kernel v19 and CyanogenMod v7. 24 hrs with light use, 12 hrs with heavy use.
used to use milestone 4 with air kernel.
use the latest version of both rom and kernel and set 200-1000.
you will see the difference and if you want to save more battery after following as above, then reply me.
I haven't really noticed a difference between ROMs. As stated a few posts above, the kernel and ROM themselves will only give a few minor boosts. Black vs white screens makes a world of difference. I use the inverted browser a lot and a majority of my apps tend to have dark themes which I personally prefer. Daily use, 3 or so hours of screen on time with the phone off the charger for 12-14 hours. It all varies on how I use my phone though on that particular day.

Best rom for battery life

Hello guys,
as for me the most annoying part of a smartphone is running out of battery when there is no chance to recharge, I want to collect your experieces with different roms concerning battery life.
WHich rom gave you the longest battery?
Cheers
There are many factors not only the ROM.
It's the kernel you flashed, it's the settings you have chosen... and at least it's your daily behavior with your phone....
Usually you have a better battery life with custom kernels...

custom kernel with feature as ability to set minimum CPU frequency and probablly voltage control
and U'll have to try some of them in order to find out the wright one
Longest battery life i get with stock rom so far (around 20h with moderate usage)
for custom roms:
Best battery life gave me PAC-Man rom with bubbav4 kernel - which was almost like stock.
ViperOneS had the worst battery life for me.
just try some roms and kernels, it also depends on how you use your phone of course.
in my experience, 4.2.2 roms have the lowest battery life ~3.5 hours screen on + wifi on (active Web surfing) with auto brightness.
Viper rom 2.1 ~4 hours
aosp 4.1.2 (cm10) and viper 1.2.1 ~4.5
very rough numbers obviously so no one roast me. remember I'm talking about total screen on time as reported by the battery app.
The newer jb 4.2 roms are very popular and have a lot of great features, but if battery is your thing, try out some of the older android and sense roms.

For me it was pretty much a tie between Liquid Smooth with Bubba Kernel(OC to 1890 for heavy periods, 1134 for light usage, and complete collapse of the CPU when the screen is off) And Viper One S with the Stock Kernel. Like everyone said though you'll experience wildly different numbers depending on what settings you use and how much
Viper has always had phenomenal battery life.

Complete collapse of Cpu when screen off? Is that pm sleep mode 1 or 0?
Thank you very much. Unfortunately my phone jack is broken so I cannot test your configs, will report after repair though.
Cheers

There's a setting on through Android Tweaker that gives you the option to control how the phone deep sleeps basically
