I've been flashing a bunch of AOSP roms and with all of them, i tend to get terrible battery life while idling. I've narrowed it down to my phone not sleeping while the screen is off. In the battery chart menu awake seems to be almost the same as the battery up time and the bar graph is almost a full solid blue. while i was searching i came across a post in cm forums blaming this on something to do with the gps and that disabling it and rebooting would fix it but this does not seem to work for me. Does anyone else have this and has anyone found a way to fix it?
I've also discovered a post whereby someone was running advanced task killer on an sgs2 to fix the same issue i'm having but i would rather not rely on a task killer if i don't need to. Any info, ideas, help, links etc are greatly appreciated!!

So, to narrow things down, I started off fresh
- Flashed stock 1.11 hboot from Telus RUU
- relocked then RUU
- unlocked, flashed TWRP 2.4.4
- Wiped SD, Cache, Dalvik, System, Factory Reset
- Flashed PA 2.54/Gapps (my fave ROM)
- Installed few apps. Friendcaster, Tunein Radio and Swiftkey
- Left it at 60% over night not charging
Low and behold, Awake time and screen on time were almost on par. However, I used it on the bus to listen to some tune in radio, browse the web etc and it seems as though one of the apps or maybe multiple are keeping the phone awake more than it has to be and it started draining again. not as bad as before, mind you. Most likely due to there being less apps. So at this point if I want to continue using AOSP ROMS it seems as though I will need to set up a task killer so nothing keeps my phone awake.
Tonight I will set it up and see what happens with my awake/screen on bars. I am fairly certain they will sync up afterwards. I tried to avoid a Task Killer but it seems as though I cannot! I will post my findings after for anyone else in this same boat though it seems very few are!
Get a program like better battery stats or Gsam battery monitor to tell you what your wake locks are

Been experiencing a high battery drain past few days on both VirusROM and BAMF 1.6.3. According to CurrentWidget it keeps at 260-270mA most of the time with screen off. On it jumps up to 400-500mA pretty much right away.
The strage thing is that I haven't really changed anything and have seen 40-60mA draw while idle before.
Partial wake usage mainly lists Android System, everything else has really short duration times.
Any idea how I could track down what's using so much power during idle? Have very few apps installed and all that are installed are pretty standard I think.

As far as general settings, Wifi and GPS are always on as well as syncfor gmail and FB, but then again they were since day one and I've seen idle draw at 40-60mA always before.

Have you changed your wallpaper recently?
Mine used to be orange with flames, and it used to do the same thing. Since then, I changed it to a space themed wallpaper that's mostly black and dark blue . My current power usage has gone down significantly to idling at 30 unless I use it!! Try that!!
You could also recalibrate your battery if you haven't done that since ROMing, I did that at the same time too, but I don't think that did it.
Darker wallpaper hmm. Well I changed it to something darker though it doesn't make sense that it would drain battery differently while screen is off, but I guess it doesn't have to make sense heh.
I did use all kinds of wallpapers before even live ones and never really seen such high idle use before. Will try to drain battery and recharge as I haven't done that in a while.
Going to try and wipe everything and just install bamf 1.6.3 along with currentWidget and see what happens I guess. And if issue is fixed will slowly add apps one at a time to try and find which one causes the problem. It also possible that TitaniumBackUp is causing the issue as lately I was using it to reinstall all apps instead of going to the market and doing it that way.
make sure you re calibrate your battery after ROMing, if you haven't done that already. That fixed all my idling power consumption (and charging) problems
Try applying airplane mode. That will help you see if your radios are eating battery.
Reinstalled the rom and while I didn't want to install any apps market restored everything I had, but I did not use TitaniumBackup this time and so far everything is fine. Idle is back down to 40s mA.
I guess was some glitch in the backups. Because everything else is the same.
I have been obessing over my battery stat page and am trying to figure out what exactly "Android System" is. It is usually consuming the highest percentage of battery power. I have tried everything to figure out what action exactly makes Android System get added to the battery stats page. I have disabled everything, every radio, syncing, deleted all widgets. I hardly have any apps as it is. It just seems rather inconsistent because sometimes Ill check the page after making a call and will find that Voice calls has consumed a small percentage of battery and Android System isn't even on the list. Other times I will take it off the charger and make a 30 minute call, but when I check the stats page 70% battery was used by Android System and only 3% was Voice Calls.
Can anyone tell me exactly what triggers Android System so I can make sure I cut down on its battery usage in any way possible

Did a battery calibration and now android system isn't the number 1 thing consuming battery as usual. Weird:

I had this problem too until I did a calibration. Now cell standby consumes over 50% of my battery regularly, with android system consuming only 2%.

Android system will occasionally use CPU as well, as shown in the following screenshots. Also! My good buddy let me see his Droid x recently. He had 42% battery life left and android system had only taken up 4% of that.

If you asked me I would say all your values are a little screwy. Do you even turn the screen on, on your phone and use it? If you use your phone the Display should be by far the most used. To me it looks like you physically use your phone very little. That is why Phone idle and Android System seem to be the higher numbers.
Guessing you have many accounts syncing in the background. One of the biggies for Android System. So its not that Android System is using so much, the rest of the processes are using so little.
Oddly enough the same thing started happening with my phone recently too.

The system wouldn't eat most of the charge in less than 8 hours in normal circumstances. Also about your question concerning accounts, while I'm not seh6183, personally I only have my email account synchronizing and the very same thing happens.
Something is causing the CPU to remain awake, in my case stuck at 800MHz.
The factory reset will most likely solve it, but it'd be best to find the culprit to just try and rectify a specific anomaly rather than reinstalling the whole system.
Has recently any core Google apps been updated? Email, Maps, anything?
I do agree that in 8 hours of non physical use your battery should not be going dead. So I couldn't sleep last night and I did some google searching. Here are some things I found out.
Do you have Googles Goggles installed? Seems it may have a bug where it keeps the camera on even when the phone is supposedly asleep.
Seeing that seh6183 always has his wifi active maybe it has something to do with wifi. I found this from Juri's TechBlog
couple of days ago I finally got the eagerly awaited system upgrade to Gingerbread on my Nexus One. The update went pretty well, although some Nexus One users reported about problems with the updating process. The only thing I noticed is that Dropbox didn't work after the upgrade.
A re-install solved the issue. All-in-all Gingerbread is great. Beside UI enhancements it feels also faster than Froyo. However, after trying it for two days now, I noticed a substantial increase in battery consumption. By looking at the system battery stats (Settings -> About phone -> Battery use), Android System was listed to consume 23% of the battery .
Apparently the problem is a bug in Gingerbread version 2.3.3 (you know there is 2.4 as well) on how the system handles the Wifi adapter. If you go into your Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Wi-Fi settings, press the menu button and click on "Advanced", you'll see a menu entry "Wi-Fi sleep policy". Gingerbread seems to have a problem when that option is set to "When screen turns off". While that may sound to be the most energy-saving option, the bug turns it into a battery killer. If you switch the option to "Never", the Android system will only consume ~3% in the battery stats.
Obviously, in addition to this, the best battery saver is to just turn Wi-Fi off when you don't need it . Caution, if one of the future updates fixes this problem (which I strongly hope), you have to set the option back again.

Something I didn't see but killed my battery on my windows mobile phone was instant messengers. Do you use any apps that are for instant messaging.

So it seems that if you (cmdr001) also are a full time wifi user, you may be affected by the same bug. Check your wifi sleep policy and adjust your settings to "Never".
Install a battery monitor app from the market or spare parts to see what is using your battery. Install Juice Defender to stop all that excessive useage.

Just switched the sleep policy to "never" (which ironically I've always used until very recently). Ill return with results after about 5 hours. The only thing is that I'm on android 2.3.5 not 3.3 so we will have to see if the bug was affecting me.
I also don't have Google goggles. And to the above poster, my phone regularly went into deep sleep so it wasn't my CPU that was staying active.
Oh and I've been using watch dog to look for rogue programs for the last 24 hours. I haven't got a single alert.

I guess the first question should have been what ROM were you using and to try a different one then. Needless to say it still has 2.3.3 components in it. And if you recently changed that setting then my bet is thats the issue. Goodluck.
Watchdog may alert you if you are using too much cpu at one time but I don't think it will let you know what is constantly using the cpu.
Ok there's a glitch somewhere in the battery tracking. I just checked it and android system was consuming 12% battery. I placed one 17 minute phone call and re checked it, I then had 57% android system consumption.
No way.
I'm using a cm7 nightly and I'm about to flash the stable version with a different kernel. Ill do a full wipe as well.

After recharging my battery to 100% and wiping the battery stats, my android system consistently uses 2% of the battery, while the display sucks up around ~40%.
I know that CM7 is a WIP so i dont expect much..but is everyone having significant battery drains on CM7? My battery is running out within 4-5 hours of normal use, surfing web, texts, google music etc. My display is all the way down. What is draining the battery alot? Right now im on a fresh install of mookOSmtd build1. Other than battery and camcorder everything is extremely smooth on CM7 so far..
I'm working on some tweaks for miui and mokee which both share the cm7 boot.img. Be patient. Some advice for now, turn off background data in accounts and sync settings when you don't need it, as well as data and wifi and auto sync...
Your battery might be on it's way out. That is really bad life. How are other ROMs doing in comparison? I haven't been on CM7 in a week or so but I was getting at least a day out of it.
Same bad battery life here. As it's been been figured out in another thread, it's about modem. Flashing other modem did not help me though. So it's up to developers when it'll be fixed.
Until then, the only workaround I found was to turn off synching, data and wifi. Then I'm getting good battery life.
It's a work in progress ROM, we know what we're getting into. Nevertheless, it's still one of the best ROMs around.

Some things I have found with CM7 based ROM (MIUI more specifically)...
So, I have been working on trying to improved battery life for MIUI MTD and have found some things that help.
The modem seems to be the biggest culprate. I had notice that it was switching from 3G to H every couple of seconds. So the first thing I did was flash an older modem (KD1). and that fixed that issue. But, my battery life was still a bit below par. I pulled a logcat and saw that delvik was dumping and refresh quite often. This is where it may be different if you are using any CM7 ROM other than Team Kick Asses MIUI. I edited the governor tweak by turning the up_threshold to 80. Unfortunately I sacrificed a little bit of performance, but the battery life was becoming more desirable. I also took my own advice and performed steps 1 thru 3 of the Gremlin Remover process (link in my signature, just follow the OP. No need to run the 1-Click as it is only meant for worst case scenarios). For me, the Gremlin Remover process yielded the best results (mainly the battery pull and complete power down method). Thru further investigation, I noticed something would connect to data (little up and down arrows next to signal bar) every time I would unlock the screen. It seems that google services is the guilty one in this case. So I turned off automatic sync in accounts & sync settings. Again, a little bit of a boost there as well. You can always sync manually. But then there is background data that is connecting a lot as well. So I turned it off too (a well known trick that has been around... don't forget about turning off wifi when not using it and data). Unfortunately, by turning off background data, certain things like google voice mail and gtalk don't work, so I had to turn it back on. Now, after reviewing the logcat again, dalvik is refreshing and clearing A LOT. So I edited the build.prop by changing heap size to 128 and removed any other entries in the build.prop that dealt with dalvik (for testing purposes ONLY), rebooted to recovery via the button method, cleared cache and dalvik cache, rebooted an let phone sit for a while. Things seem to be running wuite smoothly, and the battery is lasting about 12 hours for me now (which included 4, 1 hour long phone calls, about 5 quick calls, lots of texting, web browsing, and playing a fwe games while I sat and waited a few times). Do not edit the build.prop if you don't know what you are doing. I will post more comprehensive details later as it is getting time for me to head to work.
I completely understand and recognize that CM7 is a WIP, but these are just some suggestions and ideas that I am passing off to you.
also, I haven't looked into the CM build prop, so i don't know the default dm heap size.
It might be low.

That is odd on mokee 48 is the largest available.

I flashed CM 10.1 yesterday (cm_p500-userdebug-cm-10.1 from jenkins. androidarmv6.org/job/android/ and I'm amazed how smooth and perfect it is working (A huge 'Thank you!!' to the developer )
The problem is that my battery drain is awful. It took less than 8 hours today to completely discharge, though I hardly touched it.
I used Battery Calibration and also installed "WakeLock Detektor" to see where the problem is, and it stated that my phone isn't asleep 99% of the time though the display is turned off most of the time :crying:
The main reason is a kernel-related thing named "suspend_backoff" that keeps it awake.
I wanted to install a different kernel, but I got no clue which one... I actually planned on installing the recent DorimanX-Kernel, but then recognized that this is only available for the Galaxy SII
Can anyone recommend a Kernel that keeps my system running smooth but the battery drain at a minimum? I basically need my phone for Messaging (SMS, WhatsApp, E-Mail), Calendar and once in a while as navigation system. So no need for spectacular game performances or so.
Are there other Ways to improve my battery life on that phone (I've read all the general tips for improving battery life)? Maybe some OC things I can change manually?

I found SweetnSour's version 11 kernel quite good with cm10.1.
However, the ROM needs some help to get good battery life:
Install 2xBatterysaver. It will turn off data and WIFI when the screen is off (turn them on periodically to allow syncing). There are various apps like this one.
Control WIFI. Use Y5 battery saver or Whiz WIFI manager. Y5 is tiny and effective but crashes on cm10.2. Both check for favorite hotspots, leave WIFI on and turn it off when leaving the hotspot.

After days of trial and error, cutting and re-enabling all connections from WiFi to 3G and hibernating, un- and re-installing basically all of my apps and trying loads of other roms I didn't love as much as this in the least, I found the source for my phone being awake basically 100% of the time.
The changelog of the mod stated that there's still this WiFi-issue that keeps the phone awake.
Well, though I've tried before, It now works: switching off the WiFi connection finally gets my phone to sleep.
I think I'll just be running on my mobile data for the followin days or weeks until this bug has been fixed.
Btw: A little hint for the developer (I'm posting here, since I'm a noob and can't post in the developers forum): When switching the WiFi options to turn out WiFi whenever screen goes dark, it won't connect afterwards. I always needed to reboot my phone when I wanted WiFi to work again. (This bug also caused my mobile data not to work. It apparently thought WiFi was running, though it couldn't connect.)
Purchased the shield tablet with controller yesterday. It came with 4.4 and seemed to run fine (wifi speed very fast etc) Soon after upgraded to 5.01 and the problems started..
There seems to be the Miscellaneous entry under the battery settings which is using around 40% of the battery according to the info. Battery drain seems to be quite fast.
Since then, today I decided to unlock bootloader and root the device which was successful. Miscellaneous entry does not seem to appear anymore
However there is the wifi issue that has occurred since I updated to 5.01. When the tablet goes to sleep and when I wake it up, connection is lost (and rather annoying where a game needs to download 1gb+ of data). It does also occur while I am using the tablet. Wifi sometimes just disconnects (and the entry on the wifi list for my router is showing as "saved" - clicking on connect, starts it up again..
I have checked through the settings and disabled the wifi off when sleep option as well as gps only for location etc, but still to no avail.
Has anyone encountered and solved this issue on lollipop? Or is this also an issue with 4.4? I did not use it for long before updating to 5.01 hence not sure If that problem would occur then (but seemed blistering fast for the hour or so when I was testing it)
I'm having the same issue. I looked on the forums on their website and it seems this is still a problem for a good amount of people. Can't find any solutions though. Thought maybe a hard reset might do the trick but that didn't help. Pretty frustrating...
Wifi connectivity seems ok when I am near the access point, but seems that the sensitivity somewhat has been reduced since the update (as the connection was more stable and reliable further away from the router on 4.4)
Hows your battery after rooting? Does it still drain horribly?

THAT DRIVE ME CRRAAZZZYYYY!!!! the same happens to me everyday and I can't find anything about it online.. somebody please solve our problem!
I think I have partially solved the problem. The below is what I have done (Will at some point activate some of these options one by one and see which one would be the main culprit)
Settings->Wifi->Advanced Wifi - Turn off Ethernet override and turn off "scanning always available"
Settings->Wifi->Advanced Wifi - Keep on "turn wifi on during sleep" - Can turn this option off for some additional battery life
Settings->Controller->Disable "enable gamepad mapper" - From other sources it seems that this may be one of the main culprits in battery power sucking
Settings->Location->Turn this off (If wanting to keep on, leave it on GPS only)
Using the above settings, and charging the tablet approximately 15 hours ago, the battery life of the tablet has decreased by only 6% (and currently there is no - miscellaneous showing on the battery option)
There is still the issue with weak wifi (It works perfectly well when the device is near the access point) perhaps a future update may increase the sensitivity somewhat
One other important thing.. I decided to hard reset the tablet after upgrading from 4.4 to 5.01. This may help. Once this is done, then follow the steps above
Did miscellaneous ever come back for you? I did reset and changed all the settings and miscellaneous wasn't there for about 2 hours and then came back. Down to 50% battery with miscellaneous taking up 17%. I'm now wondering if this is an issue with the software or my tablet in particular...
For me, once I disabled the gamepad mapper, I no longer experience the outrageous battery drain issue, and misc. no longer appears in the battery status page and has not returned.

I didn't experience this miscellaneous battery drain until the most recent 2.2 update. When I upgraded to lollipop I did a complete wipe, rooted and unlocked the boot loader. When I updated to 2.2 I just flashed via recovery and wiped dalvic/cache.
I'm wondering if I need to do a complete wipe. I haven't seen any solutions to this, but it's strange that it just now started to be a problem for me.

The main culprit seems to be the "game mapper". - the system that maps the controller to touch screen controls. I guess perhaps updating to 2.2 turned it back on. Turn it off via settings and reboot and see if that makes any difference.

I turned the game mapper off via settings, and still got the misc. drain, so I froze the nvidia game mapper and a few other nvdia controller system apps via titanium back up and I'm still getting the misc. battery drain. I just wiped the cache, and dalvik cache 3 times, but I doubt that will do anything. It's looking like I will have to wipe and do a clean install, just seems so weird that something that didn't even change the android version number would give me this problem.
It's really annoying as the battery drains soo fast (like 20% just reading a book in my e-reader app)
before I wipe I just wanted to see if others had this problem with the latest update, as it doesn't appear too common I will do a full wipe later when I have time. I hope that fixes it.

It's looking like I will have to wipe and do a clean install, just seems so weird that something that didn't even change the android version number would give me this problem.
It's really annoying as the battery drains soo fast (like 20% just reading a book in my e-reader app)
before I wipe I just wanted to see if others had this problem with the latest update, as it doesn't appear too common I will do a full wipe later when I have time. I hope that fixes it.

I have the exact same issues as you describe. WiFi is about 25% of what it should be even standing right next to my netgear nighthawk. All other wifi devices work fine in the house. Disabled game mapper and my misc is still running the battery down. Tried wiping to factory with no luck. System UI crashes sometimes and the tablet freezes up constantly (especially when using Chrome and Google search). I'm thinking it could be Google play services related but not definitely sure.

So seems you peeps having same problems I have experienced and troubleshot as well, but here is one I can't figure out...
Playing game (TaiChi Panda mmorpg) which only runs in landscape mode. I will be playing and all of a sudden tablet tries to change orientation away from landscape, the screen goes black (or has game shrunk and stuck in middle of screen) then will go black and puts me at my homescreen which is non-responsive and most times I have to hard power down. I've turned off screen/device rotation and still does it. The problem also happens with other apps and stuff at times as well. I've even turned all notifications etc I could cause thought maybe something was trying to interfere.
I have the screen flicker as well at times, feel like watching old black and white movie way it flickers.
Battery lifes went up with some tweaks found here (ty vm!).
Sorry to bump such an old thread, but has anyone figured out what it causing these issues on Lollipop?
