Have you installed a custom recovery and flashed either SuperSU or SuperUser? If you haven't done that, then no.

No, I haven't. Guess I'll just wait to go to my friend's house and use his computer.
Thanks polobunny!

These will be pretty much the last step when you need a computer. Once you have flashed a custom recovery using fastboot and flashed a superuser binary and app from within the custom recovery, you're rooted.

[Q] Flashing Recovery on Latest VZW Version

I had my phone bootloader unlocked, CWM loaded, and rooted. I decided I didn't really need root and was messing around so I took the VZW update which, of course, required me to flash the stock recovery.
Well, I wanted to play with the new CM 10.2 so I went to flash CWM back on using mattlgroff's utility and while I don't receive any errors and it reboots the phone, the stock recovery is still there.
Any way to flash a recovery or am I hosed? I thought it was only motochopper I couldn't use on the new VZW firmware.

Flash recovery manually.
Turn on USB debugging
Open the folder that has the tool files. Find the one that had adb, fastboot and aapt. Go up one folder. Hold the shift key and right click the folder that has adb etc. There is a option in the right click menu that says something to the effect of 'open in command prompt', select it. in the command prompt type: adb reboot bootloader Hit enter.
Copy the cwm img file into the folder with adb and fastboot. Go back to the command prompt. Then type fastboot flash recovery <name of recovery>.img Hit enter. If it doesnt reboot type: fastboot reboot Hit enter.
Enjoy.
Tip: when typing the name of the cwm image type the first few letters then hit tab to autocomplete the name.
Unfortunately, while the commands went through without error, it still has the stock recovery.

When you go into the bootloader it does, in fact, say you are unlocked?

I was using mattlgroff's utility and the first time I tried CWM it failed. I didn't have my phone rooted, but I had the bootloaded unlocked. So, I just rooted the phone and reflashed CWM and it was fine. I think that same utility has the old software on it, so if nothing else, just flash the old software, root, and then install your recovery.

You can flash back to the last version then root. Then you can try flashing CWM or TWRP.
EDIT: Im pretty sure they found a way to root the latest OTA.

Correct me if I'm wrong though...but I don't believe you need root to flash a recovery.

You shouldn't but these phones are a bit wonky when it comes to that sort of stuff. For example you dont need root to unlock the bootloader on any other phone except this one.
What does the stock recovery even look like? Ive never been there. After flashing the recovery how are you getting to recovery? Are you using the terminal or command prompt on your computer or are you holding the up/down/power combo the arrowing down to recovery and then arrowing up?

Ive found the solution to this if you still haven't...
You need to have root. How you get that is up to you. I flashed back to the last rootable OTA, rooted, used voodoo root keeper to backup root, then took the OTA and restored root with voodoo. Once I had root again i used Root Explorer to rename the file called recovery-from-boot.p in /system . Then I booted into fastboot mode and flashed the recovery like normal. That was it.

[Q] Obtain root access without computer? (apk? TermEmu?)

Is this possible? I recently messed up my laptop and now I can't mess with my new N5! So is there a way I can root without a computer? Like a APK or do it in Terminal Emulator or something? Sheesh, not being able to mess with my phone is driving me nuts
Thanks.

No, you need to unlock the bootloader which requires a computer.

If the BL is unlocked you don`t need a PC to flash and modify your phone. Just download a custom recovery (.img file) and flash it with Flashify from Play.
-Edit- missread and assumed you had root. Nope can`t flash custom software from third (stock) recovery.

Flashify requires root.. So if he just has the bootloader unlocked, he couldn't do anything with it..
Edit: Ninja'd..lol

I was just about to say that. I've used flashify before. I know how to root with a custom recovery, I was just curious if there was a way to do it on the move.
Sent from my Nexus 5
There isn't. Android blocks access to all / (root) by default. The only way to root android from within Android itself is to take advantage of an exploit but as yet there doesn't seem to be one for KK /N5.
All unlocking the bootloader does is allow you to fastboot flash a custom recovery. Rooting from a recovery is easy because android is running therefore not "blocking" / (root). But since the recovery partition is on the / root of the device, you cannot flash a recovery whilst android is running....unless you have root access.
....so fastboot flash a recovery is the only way to get root, which requires obviously a computer.
Hope this helps to understand

Yes I understand. That is everyone.
Reason I asked. When I had my Nexus 4, all I did was download SuperSU. It was a stock device. But supersu asked to update us binary and it rooted the phone from there. I then downloaded a app to unlock the bl and did it all without a computer. Just curious if this could be done on the n5 as well. But I guess not. Thanks everyone.

on the n4, and n5, there are apps that can lock and unlock the bootloader. but you need root for that. if you downloaded supersu and it asked to update the binaries, that means that your device had root(old) already, and just had its bootloader relocked..

[Q] Root lost

I recently updated to the xnph05q update and my root access is loss. I can root it again ofcourse but my question is that do i have to unlock the bootloader again? Is there a way to check if my bootloader is still unlocked? I am asking this because then of course i have to go through a long procedure to back up all my data as ofcourse unlocking the bootloader is going to wipe my phone. Thanx in advance.

Your boot loader won't be locked again. Can you access your custom recovery (TWRP/CWM etc)? If so you just need to flash a SuperSU zip to get root back. If you lost your custom recovery, you can just flash one again, although you will need to connect to a PC to do this.
If you've lost your custom recovery, just use a toolkit like the one below to install one. You can then reboot to recovery and flash a supersu zip (download one first from here http://download.chainfire.eu/212/SuperSU/). You won't loose any data.
Toolkit:

Okay let me just check if i still have twrp and i'll get back at you. Thanks for replying so fast

ROOT MiA1 without TWRP

Hi guys, i was looking to make twrp for this device but couldn't do it because lack of knowledge. so i searched and found about CF-Auto-Root.
fortunately i was able to generate one for mia1. now we can root this device without any recovery.
Requirements -
1. unlocked boot loader. :cyclops:
2. this Zip
3.adb debugging should be enabled
How to -
1. put your phone in fastboot mode by volume down + power key.
2. connect to pc, ( make sure adb debugging is enabled)
2. extract above zip anywhere in your desktop and run root.bat file.
wait for some time, when it boots up you should have root access . although you won't see any su app. tried with solid explorer and was able to edit build.prop. without any issues. enjoy
so with this we get root access, a question about unlocked bootloader, does A1 already unlocked bootloader since begining or we have to request it from Xiaomi or Google to get that?
hope with this we can use substratum on stock Android

No, it doesn't come unlocked, but you can unlock by either ---
1. requesting xiaomi for unlock code.
or
2. By using command " fastboot oem unlock" in fastboot mode.
i used 2nd method to unlock, it's just like unlocking a nexus phone.
Screenshot proof please Kratus
Can u upload or attach few screenshots of the root access working... Root checker or anything
Screenshots?
Well done!

Nothing to worry about... Xiaomi doesn't wipe data while unlocking...
Just extract the zip... Get the boot.img and flash it using fastboot...
If you are too lazy then run root.bat
Awesome News... Trying it.. i just want to enable nav bar

@ravinder0003 Thanks. it working using root.bat. flashboot boot boot.img didn't seem to work for me. Any ideas? Did you get Magisk working?

There's a way to flash recovery without a pc, you have to use Flashify. Just google it.
But you must be rooted, otherwise it won't work.
