[Q]Backing up the tablet, updating, Tablet UI - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone! I'm an italian user rocking a GT-P3110 that, so far, has run Android 4.0.3: yesterday night Samsung graced us with Jelly Bean 4.1.2 and, to be honest, I'm wary about updating, so here are my questions:
1) how do I backup the ENTIRE tablet, i.e. applications, data and so on? I want to be able to roll back to its default status by flashing the stock ROM and running a restore, should JB not satisfy me. Oh, also, I'm non-rooted
2) how do I restore Tablet UI on Jelly Bean?
Thanks!

Number 1, for a backup u either could back it up through root access. Which is very easy to do. (root your tab). If you dont feel comfortable with that there really isnt a way that i know of to backup with out root access. If u want to root follow this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1722745
If you dont want to root there are plenty of stock roms out there. Follow this thread for that.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2162736
And lastly there isnt any reason to be wary about the update in my opinion.
Hope I could help!

Two threads that you linked the OP to the incorrect stock ROM for their tablets. If they don't read, they're going to brick thanks to this misinformation.

No the first one will work. The title is 10.1 or 7 inch. However the 2nd won't work.

General Questions Answered!

So, since I'm already a seasoned reader of the forums and a member of the Samsung Galaxy Ace forums right here in XDA, I bought myself a SGT2 7.0: it's great. Mine's the P3110 (Wifi only) and it came with 4.0.3. Now, I'd like to root it and mod it as I see fit but I don't see much information on the current status of things. I dug around the CM Forums and there's no SGT2 7.0 dedicated forums over there. Here I see guides on rooting and the like, but no one talks about the stable releases and/or nightlies of CM9 and CM10. So, to sum it up, here are my questions:
Is it safe to root and mod the SGT2 to CM9?
Where's the buglist of the latest stable release of CM9 for the SGT2?
Can you see a better battery life on CM9 compared with stock?
Should I download the latest OTA on my SGT2?
Now, I wouldn't have asked these questions if I see them answered here or any other forums, so that's that. Thanks in advance for any information you might offer.

Basically, you could have found all your answers simply by looking at the development section. But here they are :

Yes, it is. You can root using CF-Auto-Root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957160) or other methods that can be found in the same section. I think CF-Auto-Root is the simplest of all. Note that you don't need to root your tab if you intend to flash CM9 (or CM10 which is also available), just follow the instructions in the dedicated thread.

There's basically none, except the official keyboard dock is not working (although it works in AOKP). You're not concerned by IR-Blaster issue since you have a p3110.

I'd say the battery life is similar. Do not expect anything battery-wise. However, you'll be able to notice improvements in performance.

If you intend to stay with stock firmware, yes. The 4.0.4 is much more fluid than 4.0.3, and p3110 has also an official 4.1.1 (Jelly Bean) update.
The only drawback of JB (in stock and CM10) is the loss of the Tablet UI, replaced by Phablet UI. However, you can restore Tablet UI on CM10 by using a patch, or natively in AOKP or Paranoid Android. I greatly encourage you to go through a few threads in the development section, to get a better sense of all of this. Do not hesitate though if you feel lost or puzzled.
Thank you very much for your fast responses. Yeah, @PeartFan40, I guess I embarrased myself, haha!
@Einril, it's not that I don't like stock, it's just the bloatware that Samsung installs that makes me go all kinds of green but I'd like to keep my options open if something ever happens to my tablet I can use my guarantee, you know? I read about the Triangle Away app, so I'm good in that area, but just a tiny question: is it mandatory to have it or can I live with that triangle? Also, could I install the official stock firmware later down the road if I'd like? Right now I'm downloading the latest update for my tablet so I can save an image with CWM for safekeeping.
And just for kicks, what's new in CM9 for tablets? I'll google myself what's Phablet UI, don't worry
Thanks again!
What Triangle Away does is that it resets your custom binary counter, which is incremented each time you flash a custom recovery. Flashing a custom recovery on the Galaxy Tab 2 won't show up a triangle at boot, so you can live without using Triangle Away. However, it is necessary to reset it before sending the tab for guarantee.
You can always flash official ROMs via Odin. You can look at http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/?page=3&model=GT-P3110&pcode=0&os=1&type=3 to find the latest firmware for your country.
What's new in CM9 ? Compared to stock? Basically a lot of customization tools, performance tools, and a more "pure-Google" experience. But it's quite complicated to list all the differences. The best way is to try it yourself

I already installed CM9. It was complicated at first because I had some trouble with ODIN (it seems the button Auto-reset shouldn't be marked) when I installed the CWMRecovery. Now I've downloaded ROM Manager and I'm thinking if I should install the Recovery the app offers. What do you think?
I also was tinkering with the system options and the kernel doesn't have a lot of governors. Any tips on the matter?

I have used this version of root and it has worked but not up to the full potential of other roots that use clock work mod recovery with it. You could try rebooting your tablet and if that doesnt help i would recommend using the type of root.

@ghforlife
I also have the Canadian version Tablet P5113 and managed to mess up things badly using that file you mention, CF-Auto-Root-espresso10wifi-espresso10wifibby-gtp5113.
After rooting and upgrading firmware to 4.2.2 I soon discovered the Tablet ran too slow. So I decided to go back to Stock Build running android 4.1.1 but I did NOT back a backup image, doh!
So my only option was to take a chance in downloading a "Stock Firmware" off the internet.
NOW, I've discovered that I cannot install Canadian Banking Apps without getting an error, "Your Device isn't compatible with this version".
I think the reason is because of the Build.Prop file is no longer showing Canada as the country and also a few other entries that have the "Espresso10wifibby" named. Argg. I should have left things alone.
What I was wondering is, if you would be able to take a look at your Build.Prop File, and either private message me or post your configuration and settings on this site?

So, man, I'm trying to update my Razr HD to JB.
I am rooted on ICS, and plan on installing the JB service version I got from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2095097
The thing is: as I haven't unlocked my bootloader, and would like to keep it that way, I've been trying to install the safestrap recovery I got from here: http://blog.hash-of-codes.com/downloads/safestrap/
But up till now, I've been receiving a FAILED message when installing the rom in the rom-slot-1.
Don't know where i'm going wrong. Any ideas? Or any other way I could install the ----- Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean - 98.21.6.XT925.Brasil.en.BR -----
Service Version?
Thanks!
not sure if voodoo root keeper will survive jb 4.1.2 , look into that , also I suggest to post here

good luck man,

S4 (4.2.2) is it leaked to S3 ??

Hi All:
This is my first time here, I've been looking for a Rom for my S3 which can make it more similar to S4 with all its featuers.
I flashed many Rom and most of them has the 4.2.2 update but it has the nexus touch which I didnt like on my S3.
Any recommendations for a good Rom which is stable and have no issues..
Thanks in advance

The only answer I can give you is: Take a look in the developers forum. If you see something you like, try it. Maybe go for a rom with a stock (Samsung/TouchWiz) look, since that's what you're used to from the stock ROM. Actually, I'd start off by rooting your phone(you've already done that, since you've flashed a lot of ROMs), and remove all the bloatware you never use from stock ROM. Maybe replace a few of the stock apps with better alternatives. This makes the phone faster, and frees up memory.
You can also freeze apps, if you're not comfortable with removing them from the stock ROM. This thread discusses which apps are safe to freeze/remove. The OP links to this document showing a spreadsheet of apps that are safe/not safe to freeze/remove.
If you're not familiar with the term "freezing apps", you should do a forum search(or just Google) Titanium Backup. It's a feature LOADED (you guessed it...) backup-app, which allows you to freeze apps if you don't want to uninstall them completely. In short, it "disables" the app, removing it from the drawer, but keeping it installed. You can easily unfreeze the apps if you need them to work for you again.
Hope this helped you on you way. The world of custom ROMs is huge, so you're guaranteed to find somehing you like.

Thanks a lot for all the information that you've shared with me, I am still not familiar with many things in rooting which I might need your help with that.
The first thing, what you guys mean by Stock Rom? does it mean the original android framework that was not modified yet?
2nd: how to remove all the bloatware? and what do you mean by bloatware?
3rd: is it bad for the handset to be flashed again and again with many different ROMs? I always follow the steps which the developers mention in flashing any new ROM, so is there any right ways to do that without damaging my phone?
for now these are all the doubts that I have about rooting, but I might come up with many points in the future,
I hope you guys can help me in getting more knowledge about it, and thanks a lot for your precious time that you are giving me
Thanks again

[ROOT GUIDE] SM-T311 (4.2.2 Jelly Bean)

I have an unlocked Galaxy Tab 3 8 (T311) with 4.2.2 OS and the TWRPs method did not work for me. I am not able to post links yet, but google "teamandroid root galaxy tab 3 8 0 422 jelly bean" and the webpage should come up in the search options. Excellent instructions and super easy to root. Does not provide instructions on a recovery install, which is what you'll need next to install a ROM.
NOTE -- this is for unlocked tablet versions. My tablet is not tied to a carrier, and this worked perfectly for me.
Don't Recommend any KitKat ROMs for now
I tried out 2 KitKat Roms on my tablet (T311) and most everything worked out well, except for a very important feature. The phone did not work. I think it has to do with KitKat because not rooted people have this problem. Also, had to manually fix my APN settings to get 3G, it was not automatic. I'm back to my original firmware and think I'll stay with that until key lime pie, or whatever it will be called, comes out. I plan to root again though and get some of that privacy protection software back.
