Hello experts,
I have experience of few Sony, Samsung devices. Rooting has been easy. Something or the other always works.
But, recently got a Celkon A59 (not sure who is the OEM) and no matter what I do, I can not root it. It is 2.3.6 device.
I have tried the following
1. zergRush
2. OneClickRoot
3. SRSRoot
4. manually copied su, busybox to /data/local/tmp. Tried RW mount of /system. But /system fails to mount in rw mode. I get an error
$ ./busybox mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock11 /system
mount: permission denied (are you root?)

I think other methods are also failing due to remount is failing
5. Tried building my own update.zip with busybox, su etc.. When tried to load it in recovery mode, I get signature verification error. I also tried to sign it using signapk.jar. But, same result. Looks like the zip needs to be signed with manufacturers keys. But, with these OEM devices, you do not even know that!
Now I am out of ideas.

I've unlocked my phone via HTCDev, which to my understanding should give enough permissions and whatnot for adb to work on system files too.
I'm trying to push application to replace system application, I know the application works, I got both signed & unsigned versions of it but same thing with either one of them.
adb remount says "remount failed: operation not permitted" and adb push [file] /system/apps says "failed to copy '[file]' to '/system/apps/': read-only file system

What am I doing wrong, or do I really have to root the phone just to get one damn application replaced with modified one?

You need to have SU# access, which be definition needs root permissions. If you haven't already, use the all in one tool kit to flash clockwork and root that beech. Then when in ADB you enter SU and you will get a prompt like this #, indicating you have root privileges.
Update, I have rooted, stock rom still though
If I use adb shell, I get $, but writing "su" in shell gives me #
still, I've tried both the adb remount and in shell mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
the latter seems to work, but however still when I try to push something to /system/app it still says permission denied
edit:
not quite sure what I did, but i finally got SUCCESS from installing from shell
how did you install through the shell
Hi,
I just bought a cheap simple ARNOVA84 tablet (for 50 €) with android 2.1 to play a little bit and gather experience regarding rooting before I do this on my acer A511
I came so far, that I got adb shell with root ($ -> #). But to get SuperUser or SuperSU running I need also su in /system/bin. But /system is ro. The command
# mount -o rw,remount /dev/mtdblock4 /system
does not work in any combination. I get no error, but
# mount
still shows /system ro
To remount /system google said, I would need su, which in turn I don't have yet I copied su binary to another folder and changed permission to 755. But nevertheless su seems not to work. It just gives me new line with no # and everything I type in, is repeated. I have to break shell with ctrl-c.
The /system is a cramfs and my latest information is, that cramfs is always ro and can not be changed.
1. Is this true and does it mean I can root my tablet only be upgrading it with a modified update.img containing su etc.?
2. Is there no other more safe way to root such device?
3. Does this also mean more modern tablets have another filesystem for /system?
thanks!
Rainer
i ported a LeWa OS ROM for my device and everything seemed to work perfectly, booted up without hassle, apps working, and everything was fine. not until i came to the point where i have to check the root capability. it seems like the /system partition was locked as read-only. i pre-rooted the rom with supersu and su binaries properly placed just like i do with other roms i ported. but this one is different. even on adb, the su isn't responding. although the request is showing on the phone and i click on grant, still there is no su response or whatsoever, that is why i cant remount it as rw.
so i was wondering if there is something i have to port from stock boot.img to port boot.img to permanently mount /system partition in RW capability.
i hope anyone can help me
How about making an insecure kernel so you can access root without requesting su?

Download SuperSU and reinstall its binaries again.
Or you can try adbd Insecure app (not free)

supersu or any of its binaries cannot help me. as every app that request root privileges hangs when grant permission is given. ill try adbd insecure app. gonna throw my money to this one

I think the adb insecure app still requires su, you can upload the boot.img and i'll make it insecure (automatically root via adb, no su required)
Oooohh

I didn't understand you correctly. Anyways from what I understand noe you can't give root to any app at all. Try using framaroot to re-root maybe it works. You have to find out the reason it hangs. I'm placing my bet on the corrupt or bad binary.

He's right, redownload the binaries again, if it still hangs, it might be the ROM.
Add this to build.prop if you want root via adb:
ro.secure=0

sorry for the confusion but here is the case, i ported this (LEWA) ROM and i pre rooted with, placed the updated su binary to /system/xbin and the latest supersu.apk to /system/app. the phone boots properly and according to the rom. i installed root checker but when it checked for root it says the root is not installed properly but the supersu dialog box is appearing and i can press the grant button and a toast appears saying that it is granted superuser permissions. i tried to re-root using framaroots barahir exploit but it said "Half-Success" because the system partition is mounted read-only.
i tried using root explorer, when i try to mount system as r/w the supersu dialog appears and i can press the grant button again, also the toast appears saying that the app is granted superuser permission but then the application (root explorer) hangs, i tried other root explorer application still the same.
so what i want to achieve is to mount /system as read-write partition
i tried using ADB, but when i try to type su everything i type reappears
example: when i type 'su' the result is like this:
Code:
what i type: su
what show: su
what i type: busybox mount
what show: busybox mount
or simply, everything i type reappears and the command is not executed.
i tried to modify boot.img by editing build.prop and setting this values
#
# ADDITIONAL_DEFAULT_PROPERTIES
#
ro.secure=0
ro.allow.mock.location=1
persist.mtk.aee.aed=on
ro.debuggable=1
persist.sys.usb.config=mass_storage,mtp
persist.service.acm.enable=0
ro.mount.fs=EXT4

and also editing init.rc and setting this values
Code:
mount yaffs2 [email protected] /system rw remount
mount ubifs [email protected] /system rw remount
but still no luck. i hope you guys understand, sorry for my crappy english. not my language
i'll try to reflash the rom so that i can supply screenshots
also, here is a copy of my boot.img
Got it!

Flash the attached ZIP. It will reinstall SuperSU and all needed files.
I have a Sony xperia M2 D2303 with kitkat 4.4.4 and compilation number 18.3.1.C.1.17.
I have successfully rooted it using KingRoot v4.9.5.
Also I have checked that system is rooted using tools such as root checker and it says rooted.
Now, I am trying to remount /system partition as RW but without succcess.
I have googled and tried several solutions posted here but nothing works for me.
Access to /sys/kernel/security/sony_ric and try to disable sony ric security using:
problem here is that sony_ric folder is empty, I mean, there is no "enable" file and I cannot create it as partition is RO (read-only).
Using ES file explorer or other file explorers as root I have tried to remount partition as RW but it fails.
Code:
echo 0 > enable
Using ROM Toolbox pro, and then from terminal emulator I have tried some commands:
Code:
su
mount -o remount,rw /system
fails.
Code:
su
system/bin/mount -o remount,rw /system
also fails.
Code:
adb shell
su
mount -o rw,remount /system
also fails...
I have tried to install busybox but it fails as well.
I have tried the method explained here but when executing the command:
sh /sdcard/mrw/root.sh
some errors appear as script tries to do things in /system so since it is read-only (not rw) it fails.
Also I have tried the method using SuperSu-me explained here but without success. It completes ok but then SuperSu is executed automatically. SuperSu says to update binaries so I update binaries, then another screen comes saying that another root app was detected, so I press the button to uninstall it and continue installing SuperSu. SuperSu says "Installing ........" and then it crashes, that is, it appears a screen with two buttons, "How to update" and "Reboot". Kingroot, purify apps continued installed and working, and I cannot replace them with SuperSu.
So at this point I have no idea what to do...
My conclusion is that all these tools need to make changes to / and /system but since I have these two partitions set to read-only (cannot make them rw) then all these tools fail. So I think the main cause is that I have / and /system readonly.
Any help will be highly appreciated.
Please, help!
Hi,
after a lots of hassle I finally accessed the root access into my Sony z2 tablet. But the Root Checker Basic app says
Sorry! Root access is not properly installed on this device.

I can still run
Code:
adb root
without error. And the
Code:
adb shell whoami
returns "root".
Still when I run
Code:
adb remount
it says
remount of /system failed; couldn't make block device /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/system writable: Permission denied
remount failed

I need to remount the device because I want to move an APK to the "/system/priv-apps" folder.
Did you try remounting directly from an adb shell ?
mount -o remount,rw /system

Are you trying to mount as root ? (your shell prompt should start with # and not $). If not, use "su" command to get root and then try mounting again.
If remount fails even from a root shell, check your SELinux status with "getenforce" command.

Yes, I am trying to mount as root so that I can move an APK to "system/priv-apps". My shell prompt does start with #. I cannot use "su", it says "[-] Daemon is stop".
I checked SELinux status. It says "Enforcing", then I tried "adb shell setenforce 0" it says "setenforce: Couldn't set enforcing status to '0': Permission denied". :'(
Likely SELinux is preventing remount.
Are you still using the original software or a custom ROM ?

Original software (I gained the root access using KingRoot, tried everything else, didn't work)
I would either flash SuperSU with a custom recovery (assuming you can unlock the bootloader) or flash a third party ROM.

I tried recovering with custom ROM but failed. Here I asked a question for reference, but didn't find working solution.
