[Q] Nexus 7, X11, Different OS's - General Questions and Answers

Hey so I have a couple questions and I have not been able to find these out just browsing the web so perhaps some of you guys know.
My intention is that I want to be able to ssh into my computer/school server so that I can do my programming from some where with my tablet and be able to get some graphics to display. Mainly I have some C and python code that displays a plot via matplotlib and when I ssh into my school server I use ssh -X which I assume is for X11 forwarding for graphics(I use that when connecting on my computer not android)
1. How do I enable X11 forwarding on my nexus 7?
-I have connect bot installed, and I have X11 server by some MIT dude installed as well but I have not been able to get it to display anygraphics. When I try to get my graphics to work I get this error in connect bot: "_tkinter.TclError: no display name and no $DISPLAY environment variable."
I do not want to have to a vnc, or vpn or whatever that bs is. I just want to get x11 to work
2. If I cant get X11 to work....Does anyone know if Ubuntu Touch supports X11? I read http://www.xda-developers.com/tag/cyanogenmod-10-1/ saying that Ubuntu Touch does not use X11 so does that mean it does not support it? What I mean is if I use the Ubuntu Touch terminal and do ssh -X [email protected] would my graphics display? I'd like to know before I try to install Ubuntu Touch.
I would try to install Ubuntu desktop which I'm pretty sure it would work, except that Ubuntu desktop is mad slow and not very pratical, unless someone as a kernel that optimizes it for speed / terminal use.
3. Bodhi OS for nexus 7....is it faster than the Ubuntu Desktop?

Android does not use the x11 system for graphics, so this will not work, there is a java x11 port but it is very buggy and not ready for prime time.
You will most likely have to make do with VNC, there is nothing wrong with vnc and unless you can give a good reason to why your against using it thats what I would recommend.

Linux Emulation on Windows Mobile?

Hello Friends,
I am wondering if anyone has heard of emulating a Linux operating system locally on Windows Mobile (CE)? Something like PocketDOS but running a basic Linux operating system instead of DOS? I read about Bochs (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=291899), which may boot a Linux image, but from I've read Bochs doesn't work too well with newer Windows Mobile?
I know I can use Putty (SSH) or VNC and such for remote Linux access, but the goal here is to get some basic version of Linux running locally. I'm not sure Haret's Android port is ready for prime time yet (from what I've read) on my specific phone (Touch Pro 2)
Does anyone have any ideas? Please share, thanks.

It's possible to run Linux native, not emulated. Search for: HARET
Thanks for your response, but the idea at this point is to run Linux emulated, not native in Haret. I would love to run it Linux native using something like Android but unfortunately at this point Android doesn't look to be stable enough on my platform (Rhodium, Touch Pro 2) for 'production use'.
Any thoughts?
Android on the TP2 is improving every other day. Right now, power management and some features like Wifi, BT, GPS and Camera still aren't working, but things are progressing nicely

I'm not saying use Android, but Haret + some linux system, just the console. I thought that's what you needed. There are different system packages available which you could boot, not necessairly Android.

[Q] Android C compiler, offline webserver with PHP

Hi!
I'm looking for an offline C compiler, and an offline webserver with PHP. The best would be a whole IDE, but I don't think it's exist for android 'cause it's for phones for first. I'm doing the C compiling on a chrooted debian, but it's not so comfortable. And the apache in there doesn't work. So any suggestions?

It is possible to do something like this I just wouldnt know where to start. They have been able to get Ubuntu working on it and I am thinking about buying a second one to do that but its still buggy. I did however turn my rooted G1 into a server controller.
I already did it. I'm dual booting it. And on ubuntu it's fine, I can compile my programs but apache doesn't work there as well. I'm using IceWM, the only problem is the following:There're not as good keyboard as android has, so it's a bit slow to use. I'm using xvkbd, tried matchbox-keyboard, and onboard as well, but none of them are tablet ready, I think.
(I still don't have keyboard dock)

Have you tried using something other than Apache? nginx and lighttpd have worked for me under the debian chroot.
Try paw server for android then install the PHP plugin. Works for me so far.

Does it not compile on ARM or what is the holdup? Can an ARM build of wine still run x86 windows binaries? I can see getting this ported into android/davlik gui might take some time but what about running it in like an X server on the phone and vncing to it from the android ui

As far as I know, Xorg conflicts with surface flinger, so the only option is to run a vnc viewer to connect to the x server. The upside is that it's local instead of across a network so it is every bit as snappy as native Xorg. The downside is (at least in my experience) that compositing and special effects don't seem to work over vnc.
I wasn't done, but my cat head butted my phone lol..
Anyway, once you've set up a full emdebian environment using something like botbrew basil, I don't see why work couldn't start on porting wine and testing it and Windows applications. I know that's already in the works according to the article earlier in the thread, but I think this was could also work and you're definitely on the right track

Any update?
Right now, if you have an X86 Android phone, you can install the following to get Wine on Android:
1. XServer-XSDL - the best X server for Android
2. Linux Deploy - good set of chroot distros
3. SSH client - I like VXConnect
Here are the steps:
1. Start up XServer-XSDL.
2. Deploy a chroot using Linux Deploy with ONLY SSH. You don't need X, Framebuffer or VNC
3. use SSH client to ssh into your distro, default username: android ; default password: changeme
4. change your password
5. sudo apt-get install wine <-- this will grab the Wine package for your distro
6. export DISPLAY=:0 <-- tells your distro that your X server is local and port 0
7. for your first Wine run: winecfg
8. Press Tasks button to get out of SSH.
9. Select XServer-XSDL from the tasks list and you will see the Wine config starting
10. Accept whatever the config is
Now, Wine is prepped and ready to run on XServer-XSDL.
Tab over to your SSH session to start stuff up and then tab over to XServer-XSDL

Direct Wi Fi Connection between Android and PC?

Hi guys! After searching for months on google I decided to ask it to pro developer of this awesome forum. Is it possible to have a Direct Wi Fi Connection between my Android device (Lg L5 e610) and my PC (Win7, Ubuntu 13.04, Mac OSx Snow Leopard)? Is there any tool or program to do it? Or at least a developement project (I like to be a tester)? I found some solutions for my question but they need to a router to work :crying: and i haven't it

Yes there be plenty of ways. If you want commanding access thru the command line and you're running root, then try wireless Android debugging bridge (usually found under developer settings I think) or download an ssh server app from the market place (some don't require root and you can find a good list of apps to test herehttp://android.stackexchange.com/questions/9905/is-there-some-ssh-server-for-android from Android stack exchange) further more if you are running root and you want the screen and all the GUI there are apps that let you do this too such as Droid vnc serverhttp://www.google.com/url?q=https:/...dycANA&usg=AFQjCNGQZqmOFJI8BJfOYyjJ9Gi1sjm_Rg
One weird word of warning about some of these; if you're on a nice network service provider, then some of the above apps work over 3G or 4G too. sooooo set a good password and don't forget to turn it off when you're done with it
So that's something for android what about the other end of the connection? The client side of things
On my laptop I've access to Vista and Ubuntu 12.04
For Vista I use Putty to connect via ssh and it works fine over wifi. I have yet to figure the GUI side for Windows but I've been working on it.
For Ubuntu I use remia to view the GUI of linux running on Android, works fine but have yet to test droid VNC server for the android GUI. And sshing in through command line wasn't a problem over wifi.
For more info on the android linux to pc connection see section 7 in the bellow links to the guide I maintain for such things.
Edit- I see that the formatting using mobile XDA app still leaves me wanting better functions, I'll see about fixing it when on a PC. In the meantime try this app

Well I've been able to run server and client services on either side of the following setup;
1 turn wifi tethering on one device (I'll call this device Wabafet)
2 connect to Wabafet with another device (I'll call this device Q)
3 run what's my IP searches for Q and for Wabafet
4 start server service on Q and client services on Wabafet
5 connect to server on Q with Wabafet and enjoy
Note; this set up keeps Q from being seen over the rest of the net, and some kind of port forwarding is needed to make it viable outside of the local wifi network
Note 2; if you connect a third device to Wabafet as a client you can still access the server on Q
Note 3; if you run a server on Wabafet and on Q then both can also run client services too and connect to one another
Note 4; if you've got a wireless router then you can skip the part about wifi tethering and instead connect Wabafet and Q to the router instead, however, this may require port forwarding to be set up on your specific router.
As far as wifi to wifi without a router or hot spot... I think setting a static IP in your wifi settings on Wabafet and on Q and then turning on but not connecting to a router should allow the devices to scan and connect to one another... But this will require some kind of client server set up again and will require that the apps being used don't require an active network to start. Droid vnc is a good example of this and has been reported to work over bluetooth too and even when the device is in airplane mode when the app starts.

WiFI Direct is supported out of the box for Win8 as well as JellyBean. However, they way they are supported, even thought you can "pair/connect" over WiFi Direct, you need an application to take advance of this "pipe". As far as I'm aware there are currently no apps that can directly connect a Win8 device and an Android device over WiFi Direct to share a file.
Coincidentally, I'm working on an app that at least can do so with Android. Based on the OP's post, he seems to be describing AirDrop. I think what I'm doing is "better", but users will tell =) I am putting it out on limited Private Beta soon, so if you're curious to what all the buzz/fuss is about, go to www.get-drop.com.

try to put a wifi dongle in your pc and use an program like... ah i forgot the name! but it is use to let the dongle release a signal like router

The closet you can get is with Ubuntu Edge but it is still under development and will not be available for a some time.
I am sorry I can not post the links yet in the post but you can google for the "Ubuntu Edge" and you will get enough reading material about the project.
There are also some solutions with VNC and a VM in which you run a desktop Linux. Might not be what you want, but you would have a Linux running on your phone.
The main problem is going to be drivers, which is why a ARM Linux can't just be booted. Someone would need to be merging device specific drivers into the linux, test it, debug it and so on, which doesn't make sense if there are so few people really wanting it. And as you can see with Ubuntus try on that: It is a lot of development needed.
It's possible to dual boot Maemo (to use it for phone features) and Ubuntu (desktop) on Nokia N900.
It's also possible to dual boot Windows Mobile (for phone features) and Ubuntu (desktop) on HTC HD2.
On the other hand, these Indian tablets boot and run Linux:

A long time ago I installed Gentoo Linux on an ARM based hx4700 iPaq; it worked but ran so slowly it wasn't much use. The specialised Linux distros Familiar and Angstrom ran much better, as they were specifically designed for handheld devices. Granted phone specs are way improved now, but is there any real advantage running a full-blown Linux on a phone.... surely Android is basically a Linux distro optimised for phone specs (and chargeable apps, etc...). Would it be less work to port apps you need to run on Android instead - if that's your aim? Although it may be worth doing just for the sake of it....
Full-blown Linux offers the advantage of being in control of the operating system. You choose the tools you need. Android is less secure (backdoors, apps reading your data) and mobile apps generally feel like crippled desktop apps. For example, apt-get is much more comfortable to use, you just type the packages you need and it downloads them, no need for searching inside categories of app market (and all of them are free with full functionality with no ads). You can use the same scripts you wrote for your PC. It can be tweaked to run really fast (low resource usage apps written in C vs Android's Java), and you choose your desktop environment (e. g. a tiling window manager with the right apps literally flies on an old machine, RAM used on system start with Xorg running equals 20 MBs). Also, there's full filesystem encryption.
Mobile hardware is more or less the equivalent of a Pentium 2 / 3 / 4 desktop PC, which is enough for full desktop app experience.
