Looking to upgrade, Any input?? - General Topics

He all, who better to ask than all here,
Verizon has has finally gave me 4G in my area and I am due for a new phone soon, My question for you y'all is & I understand it's mostly opinion but what is the best Verizon phone for rooting, mods and wireless tether? I have been researching around and don't want to get a dog or one with little support. Also I don't want a monster phone or "phablet" Any suggestions?
Thanks,

There's no 'best' phone, only the most suitable one.
I don't know whether Verizon has Nexus 4 or not but it's really a good choice which covers all the major features, such as NFC, wireless charging and, of course, plenty of ROM's, including Ubuntu Touch.
Or, why don't you wait for Galaxy S4?

Yeah, poor choice of the word "best", sounds like ya knew where I was going. I will look into your suggestions, I was thinking to just stick with flagship phones like the DNA or something because they seem to have more options for modding ect.. I don't really like the DNA but my main concern in wireless tethering, I average about 7gb a month and have used up to 13 in a month so maybe the correct question would have been is there any phones that it would not be possible to to get the free tethering to work on?

I am extremely happy with my DNA

Galaxy S 4G, Should I keep it?

Hi Guys I recently bought this phone that I like overall. Recently i have been running out of space on the internal memory. I am really not here to bring down the hopes of anyone on this phone but I want a real honest answer since I have spent 500.00 on this phone and still have one more day to exchange it.
Do you think i should exchange this phone for a G2? Should solve the Internal memory issue. Dev seems to be very active and I am hoping to keep this phone for at least a year if not more so i will be probably rooting and customizing this phone with new ROMS. Galaxy S 4g is also my first Android phone and I know is newer than G2 but not sure if it's actually better .
So your advised and thoughts are greatly appreciate it since tomorrow I will be making my final decision wether to keep this one or not.
So my questions is should i exchange this phone taking in consideration that I will be keeping for at least a year and also will be hoping to add new ROMS and rooting. Also need a phone with good battery life and snappy.
Any other input/thoughts/ideas that i might have missed would be also appreciate it and thanks for helping me choose wisely.
I think you should keep the phone. Just doing the fota fix gives me 400mb+ free internal memory and i bet there might be a way to free up even more space. I think 400mb is A LOT of space, just transfer all the app you can onto the SD card and you will never have momory issues.

Thanks for you answer Icy56. Anyone else has any other opinion?
If you really want to be able to really experience xda and what an android phone can really do, at this point, your g2 idea is the way to go. Found myself in the EXACT predicamant your in myself less than a week ago. Got a brand new 4g, thinking it would be all that and a bag of chips after having a vibrant and seeing how great the galaxy s phones can be when there is an active community. You gotta be honest with yourself (if for no other reason than the five hundred dollars involved) about this ever happening with the 4g.
Its not a next generation or a must have upgrade phone, ESPECIALLY from a dev standpoint, so while the community around this phone will get a bit more active, it will never explode because its not a major release phone, not to mention touchjizz makes devs lives hell from what I gather.
If you like the phone the way it is, by all means keep it, its a beautiful phone. But if you want to really experience what all your android friends have been talking about with custom roms and such, jump ship.

Lol, Hopefully one day I can have the wealth to make people happy and give phones away.
The G2 has a keyboard... Why is this tech still produced adding weight size and increased chance of hinge breaking when Swype and touch screens are FAR superior... My 2 cents
Galaxy S 4G
If you spent $500 on the phone. I'd trade it for the G2X if it's within your 30 day period. I wouldn't trade it for the G2.
I think in California is 30 day period. In Minnesota where I live is only 14 days.
Well, Thanks guys for your answers.
I have decided to keep my Galaxy S 4G. Hope to have great conversations about this phone.
Welcome aboard. I'm sure you'll enjoy some Roms once they come out.

Thanks man.
I am sure that I will enjoy the custom roms.
Hope to be of help as well.

I think it's a good ideal to keep it. Just follow the guys in the dev section and pray that custom roms come along sooner than later.
Not really 2 cents, but the way I got mine was actually by selling a modded HTC HD2 I was using, and basically got this phone for 50$ when it was all said and done.. yet i got that much for my HD2.. lol
Anyhow, MY plan is to hold onto this until the HTC pyramid or Galaxy S 2 come out, those are my next jump ship phones. And additionally..
With the experience I had with this phone.. I got it maybe a few weeks after it came out.. Frankly I learned from that, I plan to wait at least a few months before I decide which phone to jump ship to, rather than get it right away.. that way I'll REALLY know which one is better.

Inspire 4G to Galaxy S II

Just Curious, anyone planning on upgrading to the Galaxy S II when it becomes available?
(Also, is a rooted / custom ROM phone also unlocked?)
Nick
IIRC, the Samsung Galaxy S II has an unlocked bootloader, so yes, developers will probably start writing custom ROMs for it.
For me, I'm going to keep this phone until my 2-year contract is up. Even if I had a chance to upgrade to Galaxy S II for free, I wouldn't, because I personally don't like Samsung phones.
I don't understand these questions...This phone just came out what in Feb? Most peeps are in a 2 year contract. I know I am....
I know there are some who buy out of contract but really why ask here and not in the forum for the phone you are in question of?
Most people are going to answer you with a no.
i plan to get the HTC Holiday off-contract but only if it has an unlocked bootloader

Yeah, I'm curious if people will want to switch enough to sell their current phones and buy unlocked. I'm not sure if these things sell well on ebay, but that's what I've done in the past when new iPhones came out.
My Inspire Its New, its in the market over 11 Feb, we don't need to change the phone yet.
Enjoy your Machine
HELL to the NO!
Samsung products are banned from my house.
I'm eligible for a new phone in January, I'll probably stick with HTC.
For "old tech" the Inspire is a kick ass device. Stable as all get out with lots of dev activity. Lots to love about it.
Wow... someone's so pretty rich here. Good for u.
I plan to keep this phone atleast till March next year, when I'll be due for upgrade.

I under clocked to ~700 and it is still so snappy!!!
Yeah, I have to say, I've installed CM7 (stable), and I am SUPER impressed with how fast this thing is now.
I was just curious, I see that you all love this phone very much. Makes me happy with my choice. (My wife shattered her phone, and I picked this one up same day, not my usual month long research)
So, as a former iPhone 4 users, if you could give me one android tip or suggestion, what would it be?

Stay away from task killers that kill tasks at regular intervals. U could use them to kill a stray app though.
I would recommend reading the thread "android memory management" (permanent link in my signature) to learn how android memory management works.

I will preface this by saying while I make really good money( and work damned hard for it) I am not rich.
I have 2 inspires, one off contract and one on, and you can bet your sweet ass I will be getting the gs2. That is provided it lives up the hype and has proper dev support, which I imagine it will. I understand that in the inspire forum your gonna have a hard time finding anyone saying its not the best phone ever for all time, but I am not the typical owner. I dont have a "pride of ownership" complex. While I lOVE this phone, its far from perfect. The battery is a joke, the bluetooth radio is really weak, the cellular radio has a hard time, and the bottom/side covers fit poorly. Not my opinion, just what it is. The only thing that may be a bit subjective is the cellular radio signal. Buttttt I have tested 5 brand new inspires against a captivate, aria, iphone, and a dumbphone and it always has the weakest signal (in db's not F'in bars). I have flashed every radio/ril known to man, and while it will fluctuate a bit from one to another, as an average its mostly the same. I am talking strictly in signal strength (both edge/hspa) no stupid bars or speedtest.net results. I also tested the bluetooth on 3 inspires myself and had a friend test 2 and all did the same thing. It will start to break up bad if you cover the antenna(side cover) with your hand or move away from the source. This again is something I dont experience with my other plethora of phones. I tested it with 2 headsets and 2 different aftermarket headunits(car stereo). As for the battery, well come on do I really have to explain myself there. While I have gotten to get my phone to last most of the day, its still sub par.
Now dont get me wrong I absolutely love this phone, if not why would I buy 2, one off contract. Its fast, beautiful, made of quality materials, has an awesome screen, and best of all has AMAZING dev support. I only explain my issue cause I know Im gonna get flamed. I am just one of those guys that doesn't think that its the best because I own it. When we own stuff we tend to overlook issues and focus on the positives, which is fine provided it doesn't cloud your judgement. I love and have owned mustangs and camaros. I have also owned and loved yamaha's,honda's,kawasaki's,suzuki bikes. I love toys/gadgets of every maker and flavor. Hell I own an svt lightning but still dig the srt-10 and the cheby ss. And yes I have a drawer full of smartphones from htc, palm, samsung, and yes even the rotten apple.

So, then, you're asking, basically, if the Infuse is worth a penny... or, no... wait... you said "$.1" which is ten cents; but I know it's on sale on the AT&T web site for one penny, which is "$.01," which is I think what you meant, no? In either case, though, the answer is "unquestionably, yes, it's worth at least that."
But, in fact, what you're actually asking, I realize, is whether it's worth having, at any price, instead of an S2, at whatever is being asked for it.
The Infuse is quite a phone, all things considered. We all wish its processor were dual-core, like the Galaxy S2, but it's still pretty nice. And in head-to-head testing, the Infuse is typically only precious few milliseconds behind the S2 in most things; and as fast as, or in some cases even faster than, the S2 on some things. Given the difference in price between the two, the Infuse is a generally better deal, all things considered.
Many consider the Infuse to be little more than a Captivate, but with a 200Mhz faster processor, and an 11% larger screen. And that's pretty much the case (other than the Infuse also comes with a 2GB SD card in its SD card slot, whereas the Captivate does not; aned the Infuse has a better rear camera then the Captivate, and a front camera which the Captivate doesn't have, and the Infuse's rear camera also has a flash which the Captivate's camera doesn't have). Pretty much all other things are about the same between the two (Captivate and Infuse) phones, other than some minor differences in stock apps, some performance and firmware tweaks, and that's kinda' it.
The Galaxy S2, on the other hand, is a decidedly different breed of phone. It's not light years better, or anything like that, but its dual-core processor, alone, makes it a technically different animal.
That said, the Infuse competes... and well. It, by and large, needs make few apologies to anyone, generally speaking... and certainly not to an S2! It hangs-in there sufficiently well that one would not be shooting oneself in the foot -- especially at either "$.1" or "$.01" -- to get an Infuse.

I don't like rooting any phone unless there's a darned good reason; and I don't recommend that others do it unless they're up for the nearly-constant tweaking and fiddling and screwing around with the phone and its OS in order to keep it running right, over time. Most end-users don't want to become techno-geeks just to keep their phones running. Their phones are commodities, like fax machines, or their cars; and just as only a small percentage of all car drivers enjoys getting all greasy and tinkering under the hood, only a small percentage of phone end-users want to become as techno-geeky as they need to be in order to root a phone and then keep it working right, over time.
That said, the Infuse is, obviously, an older phone than the S2 Skyrocket; and so more is known -- and there's more stuff to help -- root and install ROMs. Which way to do it is best, I'll leave to others.

Yes, I noticed you were Sprint, and so I presume you're ready/willing to move over to AT&T because the Infuse isn't a Sprint phone.
It's also not a 4G LTE phone, as is the Skyrocket. The Infuse is a 4G HSPA+ phone; and HSPA+ is darned fast, but AT&T seems to be heading more down the LTE road, now. Oh, don't get me wrong, it still has HSPA infrastructure to build out, and it will do so; but if you want to travel down the road that AT&T's clearly now traveling, you might want to make sure that whatever phone you get is LTE-capable; and the Infuse is not. The Skyrocket, on the other hand, is both HSPA+ and LTE capable. Something to consider.
Only you know whether the difference between either "$.1" or "$.01," and the price of the Skyrocket, is worth it to you. For the average end-user who's not looking for bleeding-edge performance, the Infuse is more than adequate; and more-than-adequately performs as a 4.5-inch-screened phone. And LTE is far from ubiquitous, so HSPA+ capability, for another year or two, is more-than-adequate in most parts of the country, too. Most Infuse end-users will, quite frankly, never miss not having a Skyrocket.
But you seem performance conscious, and so, who knows, you may think the Skyrocket is well worth it. I don't, but that's just me.
Hope that helps!

Should I trade my One S for Galaxy S 3

Hi the title says it all I'm thinking of trading my One S in for a Galaxy S 3 I just want to hear peoples opinions and thoughts on this matter
Sent from my HTC One S using xda premium
Specs wise they're both beasts. Enough so that it doesn't matter which one wins which benchmarks.
The most important difference is the size/feel in your hand. If the SGS3 feels good to you, then sure, go ahead.
Personally I find it too large and too plasticky. And of course anyone whose taste and opinion are different than mine is a moron.
If you want bigger and sharper screen, more storage, better/larger developing community, better support from Samsung for updates, removable battery, better 1080P recording then yes, if you're aren't bothered by those areas then no.
Although I wouldn't buy anything now, when we have the LG nexus 4 and supposedly a HTC nexus 5 (specs may be the same as the HTC butterfly), which will be announced on the 29th October.
Out of the current phones, which are on the market, I would get the one XL and RAZR HD instead of the GS 3.
Well I like the idea of extra storage space and more dev support, the fact you don't need to unlock the bootloader is a plus for me
I did go down town today and held a GS3 and it felt comfortable in the hand the size wasn't really an issue so I guess that's the decider

If I had the offer to trade my HTC One S for a Galaxy S 3 I would do it in a heartbeat lol. I still haven't even opened my One S mainly from all the bad news I read about it here.
I came from the s3 to the one s. Don't miss it. Removable battery and more storage were the only plus Imo. I like the one s feel and build a lot better. I had to run an extended battery on my s3 because there's mysterious battery drain on every rom. My buddy has a Verizon s3 and even with lte his oem battery would last twice as long as mine. It's all about personal preference and if you want a bigger phone and more storage the s3 would be good. Performance wise the phones are pretty equal.

What bad news?
The chipping?
My black one S is still in perfect condition apart from the USB port area, had it since April.
The signal?
Never had an issue with it, signal has never been as consistent as what I would have liked, but since the last update, it is more consistent and mostly full bars instead of 3 bars and the voice reception has dramatically improved when I have H/3G data connection.
Touch button issue?
Never had that.
Only thing I am disappointed with is the support from HTC for updates, but then again there isn't much else they can improve apart from improving wifi and mobile reception even further and plus the support for the X isn't any better. The NLED sucks compared to the GS 3 NLED.
Remember just because people report problems, doesn't mean that it will apply to everyone, hardly anyone will ever come onto a forum to post the positive things, only if they have a problem, plus unfortunately there seems to be a lot of one S haters on this forum.

You're letting the warranty go down without even using it. It would be better to find about the problem now when you still have your warranty instead of opening it two years later, finding a problem, and having to cover all the costs instead (i'm not implying it has a problem, but it could do)

I plan on keeping this phone for a while, 2, 3 or 4 years.
Thanks Guy's very helpful info. I guess I was disappointed in the hboot issues and seeing how many are having issues after updating up to 1.14 and all. I'm used to flashing freely with my old nexus S and my new GNex and everything i read in here has been very disappointing. I just worried I made a big mistake since i got one of these for everyone in my family lol. Thanks again, I been thinking about saying the heck with it and keeping it, i just can't see the point in having 2 phones. It really is a wonderful phone for normal users. It doesn't seem to need root except for getting rid of the bloat, using root required apps, volume wake and theming. Thanks again guy's made me feel better lol.

Yeah I hope so!
Likewise, although not as long. I find 4.3" too small now and want bigger! Love the note II screen, but the device is just too big to carry in my pockets and comfortably use with one hand. Plus, I personally can't see HTC supporting this phone for long as it isn't very popular and they have released a ton of other android phones and will be releasing even more in the next few months, meaning the S will get even less attention. Hope to get 4.2, but I have a funny feeling we won't or if they do, it will take forever......
Root and flash ROMs is an option. I had a read through the guides last night, after reading that we won't get JB till December (although I probably won't see JB on my phone till January) but I really cba with doing that again and flashing a new ROM every other week and then encountering annoying niggles.
So yeah, I will see what the LG nexus 4 is like and possibly other nexus devices largely due to updates/support and bigger screen. Although I do prefer sense overall compared to stock android, but I want a phone, which has good support.
Unfortunately the build quality and looks won't be anywhere as good as the S
The RAZR HD looks like a great option as well:

I just worried I made a big mistake since i got one of these for everyone in my family lol. Thanks again, I been thinking about saying the heck with it and keeping it, i just can't see the point in having 2 phones. It really is a wonderful phone for normal users. It doesn't seem to need root except for getting rid of the bloat, using root required apps, volume wake and theming. Thanks again guy's made me feel better lol.

If your entire family have one, then surely you know what to expect
BTW you can disable most of the bloat by going to settings>apps>click on app you want disabled and then click "disable" in the top right corner. Although you can't disable some stock sense apps like the launcher, browser, maps etc.

[Q] Hi HTC One X (At&T) users give me some advice

Hi guys recently i sold my HTC Inspire to get me some jelly bean awesomeness. So I went to craigslist with the budget of around 250-300 and I came to two choice Galaxy Nexus and HTC One X. I am leaning toward HTC one X but i heard that it has been having some hardware problems in signal / wifi strength area which i cant afford to have because of my work requirement.
So guys please help me out here quick which one should i go for and I love Galaxy nexus too but HTC one X hardware is good so I am confused.
And one more thing I dont like Nexus 4 because of its design and its made by horrible LG so its not for me.
Thanks in Advance and I hope to hear some good free advice
Definitely get the one x. You can update to jelly bean via custom ROM and overall the phone is much smoother and better looking than the gnex
Sent from my One X using xda app-developers app
Keep in mind that the WiFi issue related to the antenna clips and casing flex are exclusive to the international (Tegra3) version of the One X. And the since the hardware is completely different between that version and ours, our antenna design does not suffer the same flaw. Basically, you can consider them completely different phones (since they really are), and that particular issue does not apply.
There have been more isolated reports of WiFi and other reception issues on our versions. But as every smartphone device has a different antenna design, and no device is completely free of random manufacturing defects, I'd say the reports for our particular device are on par with the typical comments you get for any smartphone. In other words, there is not a single smartphone or tablet that gets released that doesn't get some complaints about things like WiFi range, battery life, etc. On the whole, I'd venture to say that most people have had a decent to good experience with WiFi range on this device.
Also, some of those that have suffered from poor WiFi reception had it fixed with subsequent radio updates, while others have not. Personally, my WiFi has been excellent. Depending on which radio, its seems a bit weaker than my old phone (Desire Z), but that was outside my house by my grill, a decent distance from my WiFi router (lol). On older radios, the reception at that location was a bit dodgey, but seemed pretty much solved with later radios. Everywhere inside the house, the WiFi has worked fine. Cell (voice and data) reception seems comparable to my past devices.
The One X is an excellent phone. The best around. The GN simply does not compare.
I'd through in a caution about buying from craigslist, though. You and the seller should have some mechanism to return the phone if you aren't satisfied, just in case you do experience some reception or other issue with the phone.
It looks like I'm in the same boat as you, I'm expecting delivery on an HTC One X today...coming from an HTC Inspire. After using it for a year and a half with the CodefireX nightly's.
At 99 cents I figured this was a STEAL, at least until I can save up for a Nexus 4.
To all the current One X owners, my question is...upon receiving my phone, is there anything I should check for...in terms of initial functionality?
My plan is to unlock and root but I've been reading that different firmwares require different root methods?
Thanks, looking forward to being with this community

This, and many other things, can be answered by looking at my index thread, stickied to top of the Development forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671237

I don't think there is meaningful difference between JB and ICS and I"ve used both on HOX.
Once I allowed my mind to get past no MicroSD card or removable battery, I grew to be enamored with the One X. I like the capacitive, non-hard buttons. The phone feels solid in my hand. The internal storage card is sufficient for what I use storage for. I don't keep movies to watch on the plane or more than a single version of a Nandroid backup. I'm not a gamer. My GPS maps take about 1gb. Hardware wise, I'd like a slot to stick a toothpick into to reboot the phone.
I have nothing but praise for HTC service. You can actually get a person on the phone without having to wade through 6 menus.
The nice part of this phone on Craigslist is that, if you don't like it, you can sell for almost what you paid. Many almost new ones are available. People entitled to an upgrade, whether they want it or not, take it and sell the phone. The net $ get your bill down by about $10/month.
Thank you very much guys especially 'redpoint73' looks like I have made up my mind to get One X. Thats what i love abt this website people here really support and give great advice.
Thanks again and I appreciate it
