Hey guys,
you may have seen the new app iDisplay. I thought the idea was pretty cool but when I went to install it, it said "this item is not compatible with your device." I sent an email to the devs and they got back to me very quickly but weren't very helpful. So, I figured I'd try to get it working myself.
What I did is, I plugged my monitor in to my computer twice, once through dvi and once through hdmi. This makes your computer think that there are two displays plugged in.
Then, I set up a vnc server(tried both realVNC and TightVNC, both seemed good). In order to get this to work I had to go to "windows firewall" in the control panel, click advanced settings. Then I went to inbound rules and clicked "new rule." I selected "port" then "tcp" and then put "5900" in "specific local ports" box. You can name it whatever you want.
Finally, I downloaded a vnc client on my android device. I found that androidVNC crashed a lot but Remote VNC Pro w/ Ad seems to be working well. Then I just entered the IP address of my computer(you can find this out by typing ipconfig in a command prompt) and put in the password I had set with RealVNC.
Unfortunately, this shows the whole display(or both displays, depending on how you look at it). You can zoom in on the part though. If anyone figures out a way to get this to only show one of the displays, let me know.
I hope someone finds this instructions useful. It's a bit slow and it doesn't work perfectly, but I've found it kind of handy for having a chat window open on the side.
Thanks,
Samuel Maskell
Thanks! It's slow but it works. It's also possible to click "Connect to a projector" in the Screen Resolution Settings to add a new monitor
srry for reviving a old thread, but it might be helpful for newbies
PS: NVIDIA Control Panel can be used to create a custom resolution, in order to fit the device
Ive installed the manual ASUS update and this has now given me the MyCloud stuff.
I have 2 PCs i want to be able to access. I have downloaded the client App from www.splashtopremote.com and installed it.
One PC is now found but it shows on a horrible resolution and i can only see about a quarter of the screen. The other desktop it cant even find ???
Should I have installed specific ASUS client software ? i couldnt find any ....
oh... for info the one it cant find is Win 7 64 bit if that makes a difference ?
If both pc's are on the same network open up the Splashtop remote streamer on your pc and check under Network and make sure they are set to different port numbers from eachother.
There is a resolution setting in the Splashtop client. By default I beliefve it was 1024x768 you can change it to 1280x800. Also at default it's slightly zoomed out so that's why it looks blurry.
I'm pretty sure that's just how it works and while seeing my 1920x1200 monitor shrink down to 1200x800 made me a little sad, it's really supposed to be about what's on the transformer screen, not your monitor.

You shouldn't need different port numbers on physically different machines.

If he plans to setup port forwarding later for wan access it's easier since not all routers support port translation. But you're right he should be able to manually add the second machine even with the same port.
i tried changing the ports on one.
i tried manually setting up the connection in the setup.
still saying 'could not reach'
....and the resolution is awful. not even close. showing the top left quarter of the expected screen only. i cant find anywhere to change the resolution ???
where should i have got the desktop client from ?
.....plus my 'touch' is way off .... eg in drop downs i have to press about 5 items higher than the one i need.
Ive done something very wrong obviously
Am on a mac, it works but only lets me use the 1024x768 setting and not the native 1280x800
any ideas?
i cant even find anywhere to change the resolution as im accessing it through the ASUS mycloud app
scratch that ... found the settings behing the keyboard
In MyCloud settings hit the pencil to the right of your computer and change the setting to 1200x800. Then connect and your monitor should switch to 1200x800 which is meh looking, but the way it looks on your transformer is all that really mattered to the developers of Splashtop IMO. Kinda makes sense

Not related to splashtop but are you able to use computer one and use remote desktop to connect to computer two?
Sent from my Captivate
Make sure the other machine's firewall isn't blocking Splashtop from being seen on the network. That's quite likely to be your issue.

Just got my Transformer but can't find MyCloud and there is no update ...
so i went to the asus support website and try to install the update manually....
but nothing comes out and still don't know what to do......
i guess i installed the wrong update?? did you install it from their support website? i don't really know how to do that actually
if you could help me that would be really appreciated.
Thanks.
Anybody know if there's a way to update the bundled apps? For example, Splashtop Remote is quite a long way out of date -- the included version from Asus is v1.0.0.5 r5324, but v1.1.5.2 came out on April 12th, 11 days before the build date of the latest Transformer release, and there was another release in between, so the version we've got is around two months out of date.
Of course, since we didn't install ourselves through Market, there's no way to update there. I can't find a way to update in the app itself. I've not checked the other bundled apps, but it seems likely they're not all on the current versions either.
To me, this is a big issue (and an argument against bundling software in the first place, unless we can upgrade ourselves). For example the latest Splashtop release is said to fix bugs, and the 1.1.4.1 release in between times had an even longer list of changes (although some seem to be in our 1.0.0.5 build, curiously.)
Edit: I've gone ahead and asked the question of Splashtop directly, too.
Knox,
We probably are only licensed for whatever version Asus gives us. Plus the market version doesnt' let you go above 1024x768 where the one on the Transformer does 1280x800

I'm hoping that's not the answer, because if it is, it's a strong argument against pre-installing third party apps in the first place. I don't want buggy software on my tablet, and have concerns about potential security risks in not being able to control software myself, as well. If this *is* the answer, it'd be nice if Asus would consider releasing another version of the rom image with all the third-party stuff removed, and let users switch back and forth between the two rom types as they want.
Interesting catch that the Asus version supports resolutions that the retail one doesn't. I see a bunch of people asking for that in Splashtop's forums, wonder why on earth they haven't publicly released it if it was possible in software as long ago as 1.0.0.5? (And it's also possible in iOS versions).

Hadn't tried it, as I was scared I'd pay for it and then find out it conflicted. It was going to be my next question if they said there's no way to update. ;-)
The app I would like to present is called X-Link and is intended to make file transfers between devices (Android or PC) easy.
It's using multicasts to find other clients within the same WiFi network.
So no setup ist needed.
In addition to the Android app there is also a Java based PC client available.
This client has been tested on Linux and Windows but might work on other configurations.
The full description and a short video can be found on the Android Market page:
https://market.android.com/details?id=de.fun2code.android.xlink
You can not only transfer files between PC and Android but also between Android devices.
This is beta software, so there are still bugs.
Please report them in this thread. I'll have a look as soon as I find time and will contact some of you to get things fixed.
There are surely some timing (and timeout) problems which need some attention.
Make sure your router supports multicasts.
Please post comments, I'll try to read them all
Link to PC client
http://www.fun2code.de/downloads/xlink/XLinkClient.jar
Copying of directories
Supported since 0.8.4 beta.
Testing and how you can help
Multicast test
To test if your network is able to deal with multicast messages you can do the following test:
1. Download the file MulticastSender.jar and MulticastReceiver.jar.
2. On one PC start the MulticastSender.jar and on another the MulticastReceiver.jar.
The sender sends screenshots. If you see the screenshots on the receiver's side, multicasts are working for you.
If not, X-Link will not work.
If this works but X-Link doesn't it's likely that there is a problem concerning timeouts within X-Link.
In this case, please send me a mail (xlink [at] fun2code.de).
If sharing on Android does not work
Sharing does not seem to be working in some apps.
If you encounter such a problem, please download the app XLinkDebug.apk and install it.
Use sharing as you normally would with X-Link but select X-Link Debug instead.
On execution the app will copy the information needed for me to fix the issue to the clipboard.
Please paste the clipboard into a mail ans send it to the following address: xlink [at] fun2code.de

Was your phone on a WiFi network?
obviously, yes it is
The devices have to be connected to the same WiFi network and the network has to support multicasts (which usually should be the case).
If you are on a weak WiFi signal it might take more than one try to find other devices.
My test devices are:
Galaxy Nexus, Nexus One and Notion Ink Adam
i really do not have knowledge about the Multicast thing, but my Wifi Signal is good. And i used SAMBA and other wifi file sharing apps and they all worked using the same wifi.
And clicked RELOAD many times but i cant see any device in the popdown menu..
Hm ... so this seems not to work on your network
Multicast is different from TCP connections, so this can't be compared.
Wow, it actually worked in HTC Desire!! Great app!! Now I can transfer files w/o any cables!! Need sometime to allow 2 devices to connect though..
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I don't know anything about Multicast, but my Mac is on the same Wifi network as my Galaxy Nexus, and the Mac couldn't see the Nexus. I tried "Reload" several times.
Works on Windows 7 64-bit and a Galaxy Nexus. Cool app, really like it!
My only suggestions would either be to get rid of the menu and put it all in the "drag file here" area, or maybe some slightly simpler graphics. They come off a little cheesy.
Other than that, it works well.
Next steps would be to keep app closed, but still have access to dropping files. Root access? I'm not sure how it would work.
App and client work seamlessly with windows 7 and tmo sgsII.
Only thing I notice is inability to share pics directly from my phone's gallery. I use my file explorer and it works fine.
Amazing work. Coffee money on the way
So this is like airdroid but rather than the file browser/tools being built into the web address there's a desktop client?

Hello There,
Using Windows8, DHD and TF101. My PC had no problem seeing the items on my network Alas, every time I tried to swap a file over I just kept getting a pop message telling me there was an upload error. Thanks.
Pity because it was something I had been looking for :-(
Worked perfectly on Macbook running Lion and galaxy nexus
awesome app!
amazing app and super simple to use/set up, great stuff dude =D

Make sure you have x-link at the front of your screen (on your phone) seems it disappears after being inactive and you'll get the upload error problem. I am of course speaking from experience as I just fought with that, bringing x-link back to the front seemed to solve it.
Thanks to all of you for testing!
The X-Link app has to be active on the Android device to be visible to others and for the transfer to work.
If you close the app during data transfer, the transfer will break.
I'm glad that it worked for some of you. I'll do some debugging next week.
Hope things will improve...
For does of you having problems seeing other devices.
You can do the following test.
Run the PC client from console: java -jar XLinkClient.jar
Then try to detect you PC from the Android device.
You should see an output similar to this on the console:
Connecting: 192.168.0.198/4500
If an Exception occurs there was a problem when connecting back to the Android device.
If no output is visible, it's likely that multicasts are not working within your network.
Might help newer users who want to try out your app if you put a download link on your web site or here in this thread. I found your app through xda article and didn't realize that I had to type the link out verbatim with 'XLinkClient.jar' having correct capitalization lol. Took me a minute to figure out, so newer people might just give up without trying it. Just fyi ;-)
Great app, thanks for your work! Working on Mac running Lion and Droid 3.
Working great on Windows 8 Consumer preview and LG Optimus 2X. If i had a job right now, i would send you money for a beer, but i dont have a job at the moment, so a cant. Thanks.
I'm trying out the Touchpad as an RDP client for my work Windows machine. With a Bluetooth keyboard and iTap RDP, it works very well, but one thing that's annoying is that Android/ICS traps certain key combinations instead of sending them through to Windows, e.g., ALT+TAB (Symbol+Tab on the HP Touchpad BT keyboard) and WIN+TAB (Home+Tab on the HP keyboard). Another one that gets trapped is WIN+E which should open an Explorer window but instead tries to launch the Android email client. Does anyone know if these Android keys can be disabled, ideally just while the RDP client is running, but worst case scenario, across the board?

I tired this and could not get it to work.. If you have got it working please post.. I have a TF101 and with the local keyboard I really want a way to use the alt tab / windows key tab options.. but both go to Android local... If anyone has a way of getting around this I would love to hear it!
ALT TAB locally really is not required when you have the nice button for recent apps
go to /system/usr/keylayout/ and see which .kl needs to be changed and where. theres a few to look at but you should find one that matches your input device.

As far as I can tell, it's not a keylayout but rather a CyanogenMod-specific enhancement to make Android work more like a desktop OS when used with an external keyboard. The problem is that it acts as a system-level override for those keybindings so that they're not passed to applications such as remote desktop clients. I've considered trying AOKP to see if it does the same thing.
I'm interested in getting a Nexus 10, especially if someone releases a keyboard cover similar to the one for Surface, as a lightweight laptop replacement, especially when used to access a Windows machine via remote desktop, but I have such a heavy dependency on ALT+TAB in my day-to-day habits that it would be pretty annoying to have that key take me to another Android app instead of switching Windows apps. Not a show-stopper, but definitely an annoyance. Hopefully standard Android 4.2 doesn't do this...
I coincided installing Linux on my tf101 as I was so upset about it.. however there is not a easy way... it would be nice to see a option to disable it for in custom roms..
I don't think 4.2 will change the behavior at all.. sadly

I know this doesn't help many folks here, but the kind folks at Jump Desktop somehow figured out how to circumvent Apple's restrictions on key events in iOS and got full keyboard support going when accessing Windows and Mac machines via RDP and VNC, so that's what I'm using very happily now from my iPad 3.
I have created exactly what you need
Hey, all, I don't know if you'll see this, but I figured out where in the android code it intercepts this and fixed it with an xposed module, which you can grab here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/keyboard-utilities-t2872579/post55350032
---------- Post added at 10:23 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:51 PM ----------
Also, as far as win-E and related shortcuts being consumed, that's handled by an android setting called quicklaunch, which is present in the settings app, but there's no easy way to access it. To get to it, grab nova launcher or tasker or anything else that can launch app's activities directly, then find the quicklaunch activity under the settings app. This is where you register and unregister shortcuts with the windows key and the search key. Long press on the shortcut to clear it. By default, Win-E and a few others are put in for you.
Workaround
A bit old question, but i was looking for an answer today, and did not found anything that matches my needs. Not sure if it will satisfy You, but i got a little workaround. Actually you don't need to do anything with your android device, the only thing you need for this is AutoHotkey software on your windows machine + one little script running.
How it works? It remap left ctrl+tab to act like alt+tab. That way you can use ctrl+tab(or any other combination you want) and android has no problem with it.
Script content:
LControl & Tab::AltTab
Hope it helps, it worked for me.

so this might be turnoff to some but you are on xda. we need a magisk module or something that can do this for us.
if you can disable system wide keyboard shortcuts, it would be great. and by shortcuts here is what i mean (look at the attached screenshot). in my case. i have my rog phone 3 connected to a usb c hub that has usb, hdmi, etc. (please do not tell me about the rog phone 3 and how it might have this built in because i have a custom rom installed and im sure you can do this in almost any android version there as well because its a stock rom)
my case is i use shadow (cloud gaming/computing) and so i remote control into a windows machine. i would love to disable those shortcuts so that my keyboard inputs are not interrupted by androids shortcuts.
if i alt tab or press the windows button. i dont want the android shortcuts to trigger.
please let me know if you found a solution but this most likely is achieved through adb or root. lets do actual investigation.
Primarily for dutch UPC customers ( who have a Horizon / Samsung SMT-G7400 mediabox )
Current version: 1.0-alpha
HorizonRemote is currently in alpha state and is still in active development.
The alpha version is build for Android 4.x+ ( min SDK level 14 ) in future version I might add backwards compatibility to 2.x
Source is available at https://github.com/rogro82/HorizonRemote
Requirements:
UPC Horizon media-box ( Samsung SMT-G7400 )
Android 4.x device
Post installation notes:
After installation click on "Settings"
In settings click on "Add controller"
Click on the newly created "Controller" in the list.
Give the controller a name as you want it to be shown and enter the IP-address of the media box ( currently there is no device discovery )
You can now go out of settings and you should see the controller..
Usage:
After selecting a controller you should see the remote controller layout and in the ActionBar ( right top ) it should show a status indicator.
This indicator shows the status of the connection with the mediabox. It might show as disconnected after network-loss or due to inactivity. In case of disconnection you can either click the status icon or just press a key on the remote.
In case you have setup multiple controllers you can easily switch by opening the left drawer by either pressing the statusbar icon or by doing a left edge swipe.
Additional input:
Clicking the "ABC" button on the remote should open an on-screen keyboard ( be aware that the MediaBox only supports limited input characters like A-Z ).
The volume up/down keys are currently hardcoded to send channel up/down commands.
Notice:
* In case of issues please be clear and give as many details as possible.
Was doing my usual "UPC Horizon Android" search and your post just popped up. Very glad to see your project, and hope to be beta testing soon!
Cheers!
Wow, really cool. Was waiting for this for a long time. Hope to be testing soon!
Basically most stuff is working ( buttons, onscreen keyboard etc ) and the biggest thing todo is adding settings.
If I have enough free time I might have an early beta tomorrow and else somewhere in the next few days.
Updated first post with first alpha release.
Be aware that this is an alpha-version and it might contain bugs.
If you come across an issue please be clear and as detailed as possible.
Currently it is build for Android 4.x+, but later versions might receive compatibility to Android 2.x
Thanks, nice work!
Works on my Samsung tab3 10.1 (Android 4.2.2)
After only 10 minutes of testing I didn't encounter any errors.
However, maybe I will stick to my Harmony One, this IR remote controls my HDMI AVR, TV, media player, BR player, Horizon.
Thanks for the effort so far. I'll be giving this build (and future builds) a swing tonight.
This. App. Is. Phenomenal!! And it's absolutely faster than the (new) double sided RC!
You've just created what UPC just can't (or won't?) do for the last year!
Which IP to use??
Hi guys,
Wich IP address did you use in the app?
I used the same address to wich you browse to set up you're network. But unfortunately no response from the box.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

I've been using the 1.0 alpha for a week now and I haven't encountered any problems at all.
Only minor 'issue' is that the app doesn't fit my screen entirely (Galaxy SII i9100), the last four buttons (RW, REC, Play/Pause, FW) are only visible after scrolling down. This could be solved by removing the top bar with the controller name and connection status. Perhaps you can highligt the chosen controller in the sidebar and replace the app icon with the connection status of the chosen controller?
Besides the above mentioned I'd say: make it beta or release it already!
Thanks again!
Works like ronseal!
Nice one Rogro82!
All buttons function quicker than the real remote. A sterling job.
I'm guessing you used a packet sniffer, which leads me to the question, do you have an ipad with the 2 UPC apps on there, and do you fancy having a go at replicating one of them?

I actually don't have an apple device laying around so I wasnt able to use a packet sniffer.
At first i just did a basic port scan using nmap ( linux ) and figured the opened VNC port wouldnt be there without any use.
Connecting over VNC with most clients failed because they all expect to get a window size larger then 0x0.
Ubuntus build-in Remmina client however didnt loose connection but just presented an empty screen, but I was able to open the info screen on the mediabox by pressing enter and was able to send normal a-z commands in the search screen, but all other media keys werent mapped to any normal keycodes.
So i wrote a small command-line VNC client to scan the entire keycode range to see if I could find all remaining buttons and after a night of scanning and testing I basically figured out the rest of the keys ( which can be found here https://github.com/rogro82/HorizonRemote/blob/master/HorizonRemote/jni/include/keys.hpp ).
I might borrow an ipad one day to check out the official apps, but when it comes down to managing recordings I will not need an actual device as the interface how scheduling etc works is pretty much self-explanatory. Removing and scheduling recordings and other media related tasks are entirely manageable over UPnP and sadly like many other UPnP services without any form of authentication.
So anyone on Ubuntu ( or any other linux distro ) can control his box using tools like gupnp-tools or something similiar and so can anyone else on your WIFI network ( unless you take your own precautions like blocking UPnP ports ).
A recording interface itself wouldnt take too much time to write, but the whole EPG might be a bit more work ( although that data is also accessible over UPnP ).
Currently I am very limited in free time, but as soon as I will have some more time to spend I will take a closer look into the widevine streams to see if there is anything blocking support on Android.
