Who's getting the S4 when it comes out? - General Questions and Answers

If you're getting it explain why you're getting it (new features, hardware or software?)
I want to get the GS4 because of the 1080p / 5 inch super amoled display, the new touchwiz features, expandable SD card storage, the octacore processor, and the design.
Can't wait to get my hands on it!

Be patient, wait for reviews and then if you still want it buy the 32 Gb or 64 Gb version. DO NOT go for the 16 Gb version. I made that mistake with my Note II. The 10 Gb of available memory was full within 10 days!!!
You can imagine how pissed I was. Finally a phone with the power, the screen and the battery to allow me to play graphic intense games and lnsten to music all day long and the memory runs out!

Why don't you just move the apps to the external SD-Card? The thing is that this time around it appears as if the 32Gb version is going to come equipped with the Octa while the 16Gb will be powered by the s600.

Aside from the 1GB extra RAM, those are basically just the two year old Note 3 specs....

That's not a bad thing with all that extra internal space + SD expansion. I still have my note 3 as a backup too because it's still my favorite note phone and its holding up well even to today's phones.
Not too sure how well the atom chip performs compared to the SD and hopefully it plays nice with all my backup of apps/games. These are the type of specs I need to see currently for an upgrade that's all I'm looking for right now

Well no, it's not bad at all. And the memory size should be an example to all. I really, really like the sound of that much space!
I'm just wondering how much of a waste of money it is to buy a brand new device with 2 year old specs, especially when you've already got one with identical (or better, in case of the battery) specs.
Your Note 4 is an Exynos version, right? Wouldn't it be easier on your wallet to just buy a Snapdragon version of the device you currently have? (I spotted it for €489 at Mediamarkt Germany today.)

Is there really a market for such large space amounts? I don´t know what you guys are doing with your phone but my internel 32 gigs are just fine (17 gigs left unused^^).

I don't own a car. I simply can't afford one. As such, I'm stuck with public transport. A whole 7 hours a day of trains and busses, and an average of 2 hours a day in delays. (As any Dutchy can attest, the NS doesn't know what it's doing.) Since I don't intend to stare at the ceiling for those 7 hours, I bring a lot of media.
6 hours of that I either have 2G or no signal at all, so Cloud isn't a solution. And I'm not attaching a portable harddrive to my phone that's as big as, if not three times as thick as, the phone.
I own a 128GB MicroSD. On it are the following:

There is. But with a storage increase like this, usb3 is vital imo. Even on the n9005 i've noticed the micro sd slot is limited to usb2 speeds and only the internal storage is getting the benefit of more bandwith.

Well at least now that Google has allowed sdcard to be formatted and seen as internal storage on android marshmallow, the 8,16,32,even 64gb internals should be OK for most people if they have sdcard supported phones. I'm working on saving up for either a 200gb Sandisk microsd or a 512 regular sd using an adapter once this happens so I can have a monster storage device of a phone.

If they made 2tb sdcards it could still handle even that. Closest they got in sdcard size is 512gb, but you could use 2tb portable hdd via otg lol

Works like a charm.
The SDcard sizes they mention in the specs are based on what was available on the market at the time of the original release. Larger sizes work without issue, but the manufacturers don't go back to test and edit the specifications of every device. Hence they don't list newer, larger cards as compatible, even though they are.
I've even used the 128GB in my old S3, works perfectly.

Oh jeah!!! Thx!! Will buy one today! 64GB aren't enough...

8GB or 16GB - Does it really matter?

There seems to be some good deals around on the 8GB model at the moment but not for the 16GB. Obviously more memory is always better - the phone it will replace is the Samsung S2 which has been memory bound, however with an SD slot in the Moto G will it actually be an issue having less onboard?
I know that Android M has ability to use SD cards for system storage and that it hasn't been released yet. This can only be a few weeks away?
At near half the price of the 16GB, is the 8GB a much better purchase?
What about the difference in RAM? 2gb better than 1.

My 1GB RAM model is pretty great for the price. Battery life is fantastic, however having the low_ram flag enabled in build.prop is a bit of an issue for some apps.

1 GB RAM vs. 2 GB RAM really does make a difference.
Initially I bought the 1 GB Moto G, as here in Germany the 2 GB version is only available with a hefty price tag via Moto Maker. Later on replaced this with a 2 GB Moto G ordered from Amazon Italy (less expensive than the 1 GB version here in Germany ).
At first glance performance is pretty much the same.
Though the 2 GB version can keep more apps in memory in the background.
With 1 GB I had sometimes the problem that Android did kill e.g. the Music player running in the background while surfing the web with Google Chrome (Chrome is a huge memory hog).
So far I didn't have such issues with the 2 GB Moto G.
Also the 2 GB version is for sure more future proof. Which is important if you are not willing to buy a new phone every 1-2 years.
My previous phone was a Samsung Galaxy S Plus. Which was perfectly ok for my everyday tasks since I think back in 2011 until a few weeks ago - thanks to good custom ROM support.
What made me exchange it for the Moto G in the end was the performance bottle neck caused by the lack of free memory (512 MB) and not the CPU or the rest of the hardware.
So I hope thanks to 2 GB RAM the Moto G will last me at least as long as my old Galaxy S Plus.
It doesn't really matter if you picked up a high speed SD card and use Marshmallow. I've seen no problems with the external SD -> internal SD feature.
About the RAM difference, you should use virtualized RAM as soon as you can if you're using the 1 GB model.
I only paid the extra because of that extra 1gb of ram. Believe me...it matters!! If you want to keep app updates coming, xposed modules running, etc etc....you need that extra ram. This is a great phone out of the box, but if you're here and you're asking, you're probably not leaving it untouched
I've got the 1gb model, and never found myself wanting more. Of course I keep my use simple. But for what I do, its more than enough.
My previous device had 1 GB of RAM. In my opinion, the 2 GB is definitely worth the extra cash. The multitasking difference is night and day to me, and I no longer have to worry about what is running in the background slowing the device down. I do a fair amount of gaming on Android as well, it is nice to sit back and play a game with Pandora or similar running without the OS killing it to free up memory for the game.
The 2gb makes it much more future proof. I have the 2gb version and I have never had to close any app most of the time. With 1gb of ram, you will have to close apps much more often making multi tasking a little more difficult.

What is 'virtualized ram?'
I'm in the boat with the 1 giggers and I'm curious how to do that.
I mainly use this phone for office tasks and it performs incredibly, but hey! An increase is an increase right?
Also curious about the posters response about low_ram flag.

In Kernel Adiutor there is a Virtual Memory section and if you scroll down all the way there is a slider called Z-RAM. You can adjust the size of the memory there. Instead of using a swap file this compresses the RAM, making room for extra storage. But it has downsides, the extra processing required to compress the RAM eats the battery at a slightly faster rate.
I haven't heard about the low_ram flag, I'm afraid that I cannot tell you about it.

HTC U11 4 GB - help real quick please!

Hi Guys!
I wand to but the u11 in the USA and i see that 128 version iss in pre-order, and i have no time to wait until august 15 that they will ship it, i need it next weak maximum!
is the 4 GB version is good ? or the 4 GB RAM have lags like the S8 ?
Please help! anyone hae this version (64 GB and 4 giga ram)
Thanks!!
The phone is excellent as is but I just returned mine to Amazon and pre-ordered the 6/128 on HTC.
Consider buying on Amazon and trying it out. Take special care of it and the packaging. You have 30 days to return it. You could then buy the beefier version after it comes out if you prefer.
The end.
No lags here at all and I consider myself a power using with high quality flac files playing constantly and games. I have a 128 GB SD card and it plays all my files from it without issue.
If you need it in a hurry I'd say get it. I can't speak to the S8 lagging but this makes my great M10 feel like a dinosaur lol.
Sent from my HTC U11 using XDA-Developers Legacy app
I am satisfied with 4/64, am not exactly a power user so this fits my needs.
No lags whatsoever, smooth transitions between apps as well.
the lag on S8 is not due to 4GB of RAM, it is due to LagWiz. 4GB is in fact more than enough for daily usage

4GB RAM is it more than enough?

Hello friends,
I am planning to buy this phone soon.. and i have real question.. is 4GB RAM more than enough? actually i have tight budget for 8GB that's why.
ok the Q' is.. for light-moderate usage i'm sure it's enough, but what about heavy usage and multitasking? well, i don't play games, but usually streaming, YT, socmed, edit photo, video, browsing, downloads, etc multitasking things.
so, based on your experiences, what you thought?
also, for 2nd thoughts..i'm a bit confuse to choose between 4GB RM 5 pro or i should go for 6GB RM 3 pro instead? (only for RAM side factor)
so what do you suggest? Thank you all!
Go for 6gb RAM option if possible. 4gb won't be enough with ColorOS. Try to save up and then buy later. Less than 6gb, you'll see apps getting unloaded from ram. This video explains it best
I think it depends on what you're using your device for. I use my device for everything but heavy usage like gaming or rendering. My Redmi Note 4X(mido) is more than 2 years old. It's my daily driver. I got the 4+64 GB version and it's plenty even with Android 9 custom rom (Pixel Experience). So I'd say yes. It's enough. Except if you're going for heavy gaming or heavy tasking. Then definitely go for 6 GB or if you have more saved money the 8 GB version.
Yes 4GB RAM is sufficient if you know how to use your device but no, as rightly pointed out ColorOS is really poor in efficiency, so phone does feel bit sluggish.
However, it's not the fault of low RAM, it's the software which is really inefficient.
I have got 4/64 GB just a couple of days ago in Flipkart (India) festive sale & when compared to same model higher RAM device, I can't spot much of a difference in day to day usage like Social Apps, depending games like PubG, productivity apps, emailing & photo editing.
It's the ColorOS which is really poor in efficiency, Custom ROM needed for sure.
TBH when people asked me is paying more for more 6 or 8 GB RAM is worth it or not, i would say NO, because 4 GB RAM is enough for simple multitask and gaming, thats why i bought the 4/128 varian (because of the budget too tho) but sadly Color OS make 4GB RAM feels like 3GB, barely 2GB Free memory when not doing anything but clearing your RAM..
However when gaming with game space competitive setting, it feels much better as long you dont set the graphic too high..
i would recommend 6/128 varian tho, however if you want to save the money to get the 8/128 better forget this phone, more models are coming with definitely better feature and price. just dont hold back when you have the money, because new models released almost every month
@FireXMan You spoke on the behalf of my truest feelings. Thank you. Indeed there is no better cost effective budget phone yet but if you can afford a 6-8 GB phone don't buy this device. Go for high end then. This is a wonderful device if we don't want to leave 170€ category.
alright buddies, thank you for all the feedbacks.. i was completely blind with colorOS and its RAM management.. now i know (from yours feedback) it's kinda su*ks
maybe i'll wait for RM 6 (realme OS) or try to save some cash for 8gb 5 pro.
for me.. nowdays 4 GB is less ideal (depends on needs and usage) and 6 GB more than enough, and of course if you can afford the 8GB that's more than ideal.

Got 8gb version and it's worth it. Don't need to change ROM as it's fast as **** and will never fill its 128gb, and if I do I'll stick a 128gb card just because ahah
6gb ram is the minimum to invest on a new phone to last for a couple years even with custom ROMs... Hence why I invested on a 8gb version , can open a ton of apps same time and its always fast ?
tbh 4 gb ram isnt enough if u r staying on colorOS. on custom roms 4gb is enough..thats what i think at least
In my opinion 4 GB works fine enough.
I got more than 50 smartphones till now so i can tell its fine for me.
I am no heavy gamer and reboot every 2 days or so.
Works really great. Got the latest update via Realme India and use the new dark mode. Seems to run smoother than ever.
I have recently bought Realme 5 Pro with 8 GB Ram. So Far loving it. Battery Consumption is a bit higher on this model as more apps stays in memory because I have turned off all Battery Saver Options.
I am really amazed by VOOC Charger performance.
FYI I just bought this phone a few days ago (8gb ram version). I haven't installed many apps yet and I have rooted my phone and disabling some system apps. When I clear everything my free RAM status is 5/8 only. It makes me wonder how 4gb RAM version looks like, 1/4 free RAM when not running anything?
I have realme Q with 4gb ram, it is enough
But if want to buy more powerful phone with cheap Price, buy Xiaomi redmi note8 pro

Question 128 or 256 GB?

I can upgrade my phone really cheap through work. My current daily driver is an unlocked Galaxy S22 Ultra 256 GB. I like that phone a lot, but I want to try a Pixel 7 Pro (I used to have a Pixel 3 XL), particularly for the camera. Specifically, I can either get an AT&T 128 GB Pixel 7 Pro for a mere $99 or a 256 GB one for $289. So the difference between 128 GB and 256 GB is $190, which seems pretty steep to me. That's why I'm considering the 128 GB version, even though I'm currently using a 256 GB Galaxy S22 Ultra.
I'm currently using about 140 GB on my S22 Ultra, but that includes 46 GB of music (even though I actually listen to perhaps 10 GB worth and I had added all the rest mostly 'cos I could), about 42 GB of photos and videos (although I don't need to keep every photo and video I take on my phone), and about 28 GB worth of apps. I don't game at all.
Which one would you do? 128 or 256 GB? How much actual space do you have at your disposal on each of storage options? Is the $190 difference between 128 and 256 GB worth it? (I know, I know, very much a first-world "problem"...
Thanks!

Honestly, only you can decide whether it's worth it for you. For some it may be worth it because they need the space and the trade-in value will be greater, while others may not think it's worth it. And only you know what your financial situation is.
I know, not helpful, but hey, it's really a matter of how you feel about it. Either way, it's still a very good bargain you're getting.
I would use a storage analyzer app to see what is using up your storage and decide if you can cut down or not. Keep in mind you want to have at least 10% of the storage unused for best performance. 128GB formatted storage is about 118GB, system uses about 14GB, minus 10% buffer = roughly 93GB of usable storage give or take.
At this day and age I would NEVER buy any phone with less than 256GB because the camera photos/videos are very large to start off with.
What you can do though since you already have a good phone, get the 128GB since it's way cheaper, use a streaming service like Spotify for music and for your photos and whatnot, when you take a good collection of photos/videos either upload them to the cloud or remove them from the phone and store them safely on your computer.
I would naturally lean towards getting the 256 GB version, but that would just about *triple* the cost ($99 > $289), which just seems so stupid, just to double the storage. I'd pay almost twice as much for the option to go from 128 to 256 GB than for the entire 128 GB phone ($99 vs. $190)! Sure, either way is a lot cheaper than paying full price, but I'm thinking that this phone won't be my daily driver, although I might love it so much I'd ditch my S22 Ultra---who knows...
I continue to stew on this...
Went for the 128gb myself. Almost everything I do is streamed, and I regularly backup my photos to my NAS and Amazon photos, meaning I can delete what I have on the phone. Not much point in my spending an extra £100 for something I won't use.
However, each person is different. If you have 100gb of music and video files? Then it's a no brainer and the 256gb is the way to go.
My Pixel 6 Pro was a 256GB one but for me the extra space was right waste of extra money so i went for a 128GB Pixel 7 Pro.
However if you think you are going to use more space then buy a phone with more space because you will only end up kicking yourself if you fill it up.

The Pro version also comes with a extra 4gb of ram then the normal version and a bigger display which is why it's a extra $190
I'm talking about Pixel 7 Pro 128 GB vs. Pixel 7 Pro 256 GB, not Pixel 7 vs. Pixel 7 Pro.
Anyway, I've opted for the 256 GB version, even though it was $190 more than the 128 GB version. Even at $289, it's a steal. I'm excited to try it out and see if I like it so much that I'll sell my current S22 Ultra.

My bad I'm just dumb and misread sorry
Basically you ask other people if you can use less storage.
I can only answer for myself. I use 40% of my 128GB storage on the Nothing Phone 1.
IDK how this should help you but there you go.
I have 256Gb variant and I'm using 61Gb of 246Gb storage. So 128Gb for isn't enought.
Another way to look at it is the extra 128GB of storage on the phone costs the same as 4 years worth of 200GB Google One storage (UK prices).
There's a 512Gb version too!

USA only I think.
I got the 512gb... I used almost all the 256... Next phone will be 1tb
Thanks to Google Photos, I don't feel the need for more than 128GB of memory at all.
256gb for me although so far, have only used about 35gb of it. It's a fear thing, fear of running out of space (which never happens) and fear of not being able to move it on at a later date, I always feel the bigger storage options go first and will get slightly more...
Google,
if there was 1Tb unlocked version,
I would paid more for it !!

xactly this. Lol,
if i don't split phone between personal and business, i would already pick up Xperia phone instead of my current P7P.
am glad that i have my Aquos R6 on other side of my pockets. It has microSD slot and allow me to slot in my 1TB card there.
phone with larger storage tend to be usable for longer time as well, thus less upgrade / phone changes needed.
