Updating Cyanogenmod - HTC Desire S

I was wondering how I could update my cyanogenmod 10.1 build 16 to 17 without wiping my phone. Any help is greatly appreciated

AW: Updating Cyanogenmod
You could try only wiping cache and Dalvik cache, that mostly works

ok will that delete all of my apps? and then do i just flash the new build to my phone?

AW: Updating Cyanogenmod
No, your apps and settings will all still be there. Yes, afterwards flash the new version as normal and don't forget to flash the new boot.img if you're s-on.

ok i will do thanks for the help

But do not complain about problems, it isn't called dirty flash for no reason...
A clean full wipe flash is always safer if you want to avoid problems, especially when there are new minor Android releases or greater CM changes

[Q] Updating Team EOS ICS 4.0.3 NIGHTLIES

Hi !
I have installed on my xoom wifi MZ604 Team EOS ICS ROM.
How to update the ROM?
I mean: How to update the nightly build?
My is Eos-wingray-47 build and i want to update to 48.
I need to flash it as a normal ROM?
And what about the G-APPS? Just flashing it?
no need to wipe? thanks
Wipe the cache and Dalvik Cache. Flash the new nightly build and then flas the Gapps. Do not reboot between flashing the nightly and Gapps.
That's how I have done it for every build since they got the camera working and not had a problem.
So I have to wipe?
No you don't need to wipe data, just the cache and Dalvik Cache (it's recommended that you do this to make sure old cache information won't cause issue with updated info).
OK...
And when flashing the G-APPS i dont need to wipe, right?
just cache?

No need to wipe anything when updating Gapps if you flash Gapps immediately after you flash the Eos Nightly.
It depends if you are changing versions of Gapps. If you are just reflashing Gapps after flashing each nightly then no. If you are flashing a different version of Gapps it depends. You need to look at the release notes for that version. If you were running version 9.x and upgrading to a 10.x version a full wipe was needed. Incremental 10.x upgrades, say from 10.1 to 10.2, did not need a full wipe.
The biggest thing that I have seen cause problems is that people are rebooting between flashing the nightly and Gapps. This is what I recommend.
-reboot into recovery
-perform a backup
-wipe the caches
-flash the new nightly
-flash Gapps
-reboot
I always perform the backup. Yes it takes some time, but when something goes wrong you always have the ability to revert back to a good working state. Well worth the few minutes it takes to have that peace of mind.

How to transfere to cm10 from cm9

Rooted p-5100 10 inch tab2 and flashed cm9 and love it but now need to try cm10
1-how to transfere from cm9 to cm10 ?
2-we need to flash cwm 6.01.0 right?
3-we flash cwm via oden or cwm 5?
4-we need to flash a different version of gapps right ?
5-do we need factory reset and cashes erase if transfere from cm9 to cm10?
Mohamed Selim
while flashing the latest cwm(from a zip is fine) and factory restoring before changing to a different major version is recommended, it isn't always necessary.
for me going from cm9 to cm10 it was no problem to stay on an older recovery, and keeping my data.
but if you experience problems after updating it's best to do a factory restore, and it never hurts to have a more recent recovery.
as you mentioned you do need JB google apps.
and while wiping cache is often recommended after flashing a new rom, it's usually not necessary unless you experience problems.
if you choose to keep your data and cache you shouldn't expect support from developers here though.

Flashing new Gapps and more.

Three questions:
I was on stock root66 for a while and I had done various tweaks such as system ui, pushing inverted gapps to the system/apps file and other minor tweaks. I am now on my first rom (Paranoid Android 2.13) with Justin bean inverted Gapps. Here come the questions.
1: My baseband is vralg7 on paranoid android Is this because I had flashed this radio on root66 before the aosp rom or is this the radio that is used in paranoid android?
2: Can I just flash a new Gapps if I want to? Is there any special procedure in order to remove the old gapps? Wipe cache and dalvik? ect?
3: If a new version of paranoid android is released, what is the process in order to flash the newer version? Also, if I were to switch to Jellywiz or another rom, what would be my procedure to get from Paranoid Android to jellywiz?
I have searched and I have not exactly found the clear cut answers that I am looking for. Thank you in advance for your time.

The radio aka modem aka baseband was installed when you either accepted the latest OTA or installed it by itself. If you flash roms, this will not change. Modems are installed independent of roms UNLESS it's a Verizon OTA update. PA is likely still based on VRLG1 (like all other roms are at this moment) because either they haven't updated or the source for the latest Verizon OTA was not officially released yet. I'm not an expert on how new vs. old radios work with LTE phones since they often introduce newer versions of a file like RIL within the update itself.

Not sure about flashing whichever Gapps whenever you want to. When you install an AOSP rom it tells you which one to download. If AOSP JB IDKIDC rom requires JB IDKIDC Gapps then you must install that specific file. You can reflash the specific Gapps that is required for the rom at a later date if you notice certain Google apps are acting unusual. Does this answer your question? I usually don't mix and match Gapps across different roms if they don't utilize the same exact Gapps file which happens on newer versions of Android sometimes. Normally, they use the same Gapps but sometimes they don't.

To update from an older build of PA (Paranoid Android) to a newer build of PA: just wipe cache and dalvik cache then flash the newer version OR don't wipe anything and flash the newer version (this is known as a dirty flash or flashover). If you notice issues, do a full wipe and flash the rom. Sometimes the developer changes a lot between releases and if you actively follow that thread, you will see if they announce that you need to fully wipe for the newest update or not. If they release a newer build and don't mention it whether to full wipe or not, either ask politely or likely someone else will.
Going from PA to another rom (one rom to another): full wipe, no excuses. A full wipe is at least Format data, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik cache.

[Q] Rom Backup Advice (i9500)

Sorry, I recently posted this in the wrong section. Mods feel free to move/ erase as you see fit.
I am needing advice with backing up my Cyanogenmod 11 stuff. How do you guys do your backups, enabling you to flash a newer version etc and not lose your data and setup preferences?
I flashed CM11-0303 (and appropriate kernel), then did un update to 0307 and re-flashed the kernel again. This causes major issues and I had to reflash 0303 again from scratch. I was going to only start updating with official CM updates but apparently you can't install an official release update over a nightly install. Is this true?
Thanks, my phone is an S4 i9500. Hope you guys can help because I now want to reflash a new official release without losing my data and setup preferences :good:
Do you guys backup within the system recovery? Do you backup to your phones internal storage or to the SD card? I am using PhilZ Touch 6.19.2.
Thanks

[Q] Update to latest nightly (CM12.1)

If I would like to update to latest nightly of CM12.1 do I have clean wipe or simply flash the latest zip?

i can only answer this surely if you tell us which rom/ version you currently using .... but if you allready on CM12.1 update this way:
(dirty install):
backup current rom (in case of problems)
in recovery install the new update
wipe cache + dalvic-cache
now, if you get any issues or FC's etc... you will need a clean install (fatcory reset / data wipe)
remeber this rom is still under development so sometimes a clean install in fact is needed...
