using htc chacha in india. need to root my phone, but how do i know my phone is s-on or s-off ?
m feeling like dumb understanding all this
Untick fastboot from "settings>power" and turn off the phone. Then, turn on the phone holding "Volume Down" and "Power" buttons simultaneously for 5 secs. If you do it correctly, you will be in bootloader, there on the first line you can see whether it is S-OFF or S-ON.

Hi there, I have a HTC desire S.... I wonder how to check if my phone is S-off or S-on.... How to check? anyone here can guide me ?
same here. I would like to find out too. can anyone explain. phone is o2 stock.
From the powered off state, hold volume down button and power button until the bootloader screen shows up. If you look as it goes through, it should say in the output S-on or S-off.
It will boot up normally if you leave it go so make sure to look quickly.
Hello
I have a problem, I can not get into HBOOT on your HTC Desire S ...
I hold down volume button and power button but nothing happens ...
What should I do? I do not know whether the S - OFF or S- ON ???
I find the easiest way is this: with phone switched on, hold down power button until 'power options' window opens. Select 'restart'. Wait until the backlight goes out on the four soft buttons at the bottom then immediately press and hold the 'volume down' button. Phone should now boot into bootloader menu.
Hope this helps.
Peace

It worked.
Thank you very much
Sweet, no problem!

I followed the steps from the Revolutionary S-OFF & Recovery Tool 0.4pre4 but the program itself "revolutionary," we can not recognize the phone ... I do not know why ...? I wiped the HTC Sync, turned off fast boot .... installed the drivers' HTCDriver3.0.0.007 ".... What else can I do to have the program recognize the phone?

I want root my HTC Desire S. While finding out what steps needs to be done for rooting, I come to know that HBoot version is necessary.
I shut down my htc device. When I press volume down & power on button hboot screen is not coming at all & phone starts normally. I want to note down hboot version before starting to root. Any idea why hboot screen is not coming? If I have to see the hboot screen what needs to be done?
Check in settings->power whether "fast boot" is enabled. If it is, disable it. Then power off the phone and try volume down + power again.
also you can adb reboot bootloader

Thank you. I was able to see hboot screen & noted down hboot version also
The Fast Boot option enabled in power settings gave me exactly the same problem in the very early days when I had finally decided to mess with my device. A short, but useful thread for beginners.
If fastboot is enabled you can still enter Hboot if you take out the battery and then put the battery back in before holding down the volume button and the power button.

Hey guys, I just got the older HTC One S (C2) from my sister , to play a bit around.
I rooted, unlocked without any Problem, but after flashing it just stuck in a bootloop . And I can't even escape.
Unfortunately the power button is broken and i can barely turn it on by making contact with a pin needle (works rather badly)
ADB won't find my device, and even pressing all buttons the same time won't change a thing.
Anybody got an idea or some other plan?

Beg your sister for not doing to you what you did to her phone...
Your phone will power of by pressing "Power" for 10-15seconds. Is the button itself GONE? How? Once powered of press or in your case "jumper" the "power button + Vol down" at the same time. You can release power when display turns on and just keeping "Vol down" pressed will bring you into bootloader.
You will have to try getting to fastboot. Or pay 40€ for a bootloader repair. There is no other way :/ for
As you did not tell anything about S-OFF you're probably S-ON. So you may be forgot to flash the kernel???
If flashing means you flashed a custom rom. Bootloader is working in every case.
May you post some more infos?
-Firmware / HBoot
-Recovery version
-rom/KERNEL installed
-any other modifications?
Did you face any issiues while flashing?
Hi there,
I know this might seem like a really dumb question, but I was wondering if someone can point me the way to updating my One XL to this firmware or whatever this is. I really wanna try the newer CM for the phone.
Thanks in advance!
You need s-off first, do you have s-off?

Man I would love to know what that means, but my friend helped me root my phone last year. How can I check whether s-off is enabled or not? If not, can you direct me somewhere I can do this?
Sorry for the super noob questions.
Thanks man
Oh, I see. This is why I'm totally against people rooting phones for other people. Now you have an unlocked/rooted device but you have no idea what you're doing. You're gonna need to do a lot of learning. I need to see your bootloader details, to boot into the bootloader there are two methods.
With phone powered on
Hold the volume down button, then hold the power button (so you're holding both buttons together), the button lights will start to flash, they will stop flashing and the screen will go blank, after a couple of seconds let go of the power button but continue to hold the volume down button until you reach the white screen with text, this is your bootloader.

Please post the first five lines.

You need to get s-off so you can run the 3.18 RUU, do you have SuperCID? You can check your CID by issuing this fastboot command
Code:
fastboot oem readcid

Completely agree on these points. An owner with a modified device, that doesn't understand the basic concepts of what is modified is very dangerous for a variety of reasons.
This is one perfect example, if you had run the 3.18 RUU with S-on (which you have) and SuperCID (which you probably also have) would have instantly bricked the phone.
Its a very good thing you asked, before proceeding.
