Unable to update via Kies Mini to GB from Froyo. - Trying to root - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

I am following this guide:
http://theunlockr.com/2012/05/22/root-samsung-galaxy-s-4g/
When it gets to the part saying it is updating the firmware in Kies, it keeps failing. I have done a few factory resets but I just can't get past this. I know I need to be on GB so I can easily get root and install CWM. Is there a way to install GB via ODIN so I can get this thing rooted+recovery?
EDIT-
And after this last attempt, it decided to work. lol. Well, it was probably cause I re-installed the Samsung drivers on the same page I downloaded Kies mini.

Well, I got it rooted with CWM recovery, but I am unable to do a backup. It is unable to mount the SD card. I am following this guide now:

I am trying to use the Basic with a twist kernel.

That program doesn't play nice with Odin....

It's not Heimdall. It's the people using it. I got both on my comp and have no issues.

I guess that link to the guide was misleading. I am not using Heimdall either. I got root using the super one click in that guide, and then used SGS kernel flasher to flash kernel+CWM. Then when I went to CWM it wont mount SD card so I can't do a backup or flash a new ROM.
EDIT:
I think that part of the problem is CWM wants to mount /sdcard (as it should) but my sdcard is showing up as /mnt/sdcard so how can I fix this?

What do you mean it won't mount? If you go to backup it gives you that error? What version of CWM is it?

Never had that problem before... can I be one of those tech support people and ask if you are sure that you SD card is in. And have you tried putting the desired ROM on the internal phone storage
Edit: can you or can you not access your files on your SD card in cwm?

No, I am completely unable to access the SD card in CWM. I just ran gremlin remover, so I am going to try again with sgs kernel flasher. I will try the other kernel this time.
Don't know what ROM I want to use yet. I was hoping to find a good JB rom, but looks like there is no wifi on them yet. Any good ICS roms available?
EDIT:
And yes, the sd card was installed. I was able to access it when I would let the phone boot into android, then it was at /mnt/sdcard but /sdcard was showing the voodoo folder.
Right now I have the red text CWM after flashing with ODIN. Gonna try a backup and then go flash a different kernel.
EDIT:
Ok, right after the ODIN flash I am still unable to access the SD card in CWM. Maybe I have a bad SD card. I will try another.
EDIT:
Ok, so this is a SD card problem. I stuck in a blank 1GB SD card and had android format it. Then I put the kernel I wanted on it and rebooted into recovery, I was then able to access the SD Card and run a backup. I will backup my original SD card and then stick it in the phone to have it formatted, and hopefully I will be good to go after that.

OH, and still wondering what a good stable ICS rom might be, or whatever are good stable/fast.
Thanks.

Beastmode's CM9 seemed to work great for me. I am running his slim bean 4.1.2 which has WiFi but not GPS or camcorder.

There's supposed to be a redirect from /sdcard to /mnt/sdcard that I've noticed when using several apps like Ghost Commander. Your main choices are either to make it yourself or to backup and reformat your SD card, especially if other SD cards work fine...

Well, I decided to go with Valahalla BlackEdition since I need a rom where everything works, and this one looks like all the bugs are worked out.
Thanks for all the help here guys!

Whoops. Need help flashing the proper CWM

So. I HAD the proper CWM installed for this device, this was this morning.
Of course though, I always have to mess with stuff and ALWAYS without nandroiding first. Im so dumb!
I was in rom manager and went ahead and flashed the CWM for a xoom . Now when I enter cwm I get errors mounting the external sd . It wont mount even manually do I cant flash anything. Isn't there a way to put the proper cwm into a zip file and flash through cwm using update?

Sorry for the misspelling and thank you for the info. Technically im not bricked though and that's a guide for unbricking. Is there any easier way to get my external card mounted as I don't have a windows computer on hand to manually install the rom?
Or if I could just install a zip from the internal storage.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
it's not just for unbricking. basically, it does a very thorough job of restoring your device to the correct configuration. i imagine you flashing the wrong cwm screwed something up. nvflash restores your device more cleanly, so unless your device has hardare issues, it should fix it.
but yes, you do need a pc to do this...

[Q] T-Mobile LG G2x crashed, need help

ok, so a few days ago i was flashing the G2x weapon rom onto my rooted G2x, but while i was in the clockwork mod to flash it it froze on me, i left it like that for an hour or so, but it didnt work, so i took the battery out. now whenever i turn it on, it loads the LG screen, then nothing, the screen stays turned on, but its black, ive tried to boot it into recovery mode but that does not work either. What should i do?
Did you do One-Click NVFlash>? if u used Rom Manager you probably fake flashed and thats why its not working for you. You should use NVflash followt he steps and boot up into recover and restore a back up. GOod Luck
thanks ill try that

This was written for Windows users, I followed this one myself, pretty straight-forward, and "idiot proof". (If anything can be truly idiot proof. Cynical, who, me?)
so, ive flashed my phone through nvflash and i got clockwork mod up and running, but whenever i select the file to flash that is on my SD card, it says no files found. i even tried going to my backup on the clockwork file, and nothing.

Since changing to Nvflash, did you download the rom you want to install and transfer it to the phone from your computer. Using Rom Manager it may not have left a copy on your phone.
If you cant hook up the SD card to the computer, get an external SD card and make sure u've installed clockwordmod with external sd, hook it up to a laptop with an SD card slot, and put it in , then take the mini sd and pop it in your phone, then boot up and that should do it good luck! atleast now your 1 step closer to recovering your phone
Ughh hate,seeing this happen...hope u flashed nV..all the best

Hope you didn't brick your phone.
No you did not brick your phone. Rom manager downloads the file to sdcard/clockworkmod/downloads. Look there for the file. Only if you download a rom from your browser does it go to externalsdcard/downloads

Phone storage cut in half?

About a week ago I finally got around to rooting my phone.
Right after root I did a nandroid, then unlocked the boot loader.
Then using droidstyles guide I flashed aokp jb, no issues with the flash.
The thing I noticed after getting my phone at up is that my memory is way lower than when it was stock.
Before I rooted, with all my apps installed my remaining memory was around 9.7 gb, now it's about 5.
I've also tried other roms out, all end up the same. Just wondering what's going on. I noticed in one of the jb rom threads it says something about converting to fat32 is that for the internal memory or external sd card.
Any ideas how to fix this? Thanks
Ok well after cleaning up my internal storage free from junk files, downloads that I don't need and you may roms, I'm almost back to the normal range.....
Using root exp what path is it to nandroid? I have 3 on there and really only want stock root for now.
Thanks

Thanks again. Just slowing down and following the directions is usually an easier way to a solution...
but back to the original problem. I still can't get the sd card to read. If I go to the gallery like I want to look at the pictures stored on it, I can see them greyed out in the background, but I get an error message. In settings, storage, it detects the card and tells its volume, but won't let me look at it.? At a loss. Gonna redownload the cm nightly and reflash and see, but I don't get it.

I know you might not want to hear this, but it might be your SD card...
Those things don't last forever and errors on them can sometimes be tricky to diagnose because bad sectors can sometimes still be read even if they are bad.
My suggestion, if your PC can still read the card then you should start by backing everything up. Then, try using another SD card in the phone. If the phone can read that, then there might be something wrong with the first card. You can also try using the phone to reformat the problem card.
Try to debug in a way that determines if maybe the card is the problem. Just the other day I had a 32 gig card go bad on me. It happened when my phone fell and came out of it's case. After that the card didn't work anymore. I remembered seeing "shock proof" on sandisk's descriptions, but I always thought it was a marketting thing. Maybe it wasn't. There's also a possibility that my card simply failed before I dropped the phone, and the reboot caused the system to remount the card and finally see the problem.
Either way, it went bad and I lost my stuff. A cautionary tale.

[Q] Help with flashing rom

Hey guys, I think I botched my tab... Stupidly I accidentally flashed a kernel that was not for my device...It's stuck in a boot loop, and I don't have my original CM9 rom to flash back. When I try to mount the sd card to my computer to try and put the CM9 rom back on, it won't mount. If I use an SD to Micro SD card adapter I can throw the rom back on and flash it right?
Any help is greatly appreciated. I am about to try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2007876&highlight=stock+rom but I need a backup plan if it doesn't work.
Thanks!
EDIT: Guide worked like a charm. Won't be making that mistake again.

That would be your best bet. Everyone makes mistakes like this once in a while but make sure that you always create backups so you wont lose all your data. Best of luck
yeah...u can use that procedure to get back to stock which will unroot ur device..this is a safe procedure..
but, if can get a rom in your sd card, flash it and make wipes..it'll be shorter method i guess, it'll save a lot of time!
Haha yeah it's funny the download link for the stock restore zip was downloading 700mb at roughly 100mb/s so yeah...slow af. But it worked so that's all that matters.
