Tried the following methods=
Cold boot
Switching from PC USB to Asus charger
Switching from other manufacturer's charger to Asus
Freeze the charger(???)
Adaptor charge the tablet in good order, but it doesn't seem to be charging the doc.
The dock is always blinking rapid amber led when plugged in and the adaptor just get really hot.
Guys, any advise? Warranty expired, it gonna hurt my wallet to send in for repair ;(
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
If you let the dock drain 100% it sometimes encounters problems. If you open up the dock you will see a little switch. Flip it back and forth and it should start charging again

Got the same problem as the OP - Dock not charging and even the dock option is greyed out within the Settings - Interface - Launcher option.
My question is - Is there any software command that would simulate the flipping of the switch using ADB etc? Would not want to open the dock as yet..
It works properly when I attach it to the tablet, only problem is that it doesn't charge...Any pointers would be more than welcome!
Am on 4.1.2, CM10 2012 12 08 Unofficial
Thanks!
Try a cold boot, it fixes lots of these problems. Hold the power and vol down buttons till you see 2 icons on the screen, then release the 2 buttons and let it boot. Try it while docked and it should start charging again.

Yes, already tried that (it says cold booting linux and all..) , I tried it while docked and with the charger in the dock..but still the same orange blinking light..Dual Battery Widget also doesnt detect the dock..though I can type with the keyboard and all that stuff..
Guess you should open it up then, and try to switch trick as I doubt there's an ADB command for a hardware switch inside a "third party device" since it's not part of android but really an extension that probably requires drivers and/or kernel modules outside of stock android. If there is, it's probable it's not documented if it was added by Asus for Asus. While it's opened up inspect the battery for obvious signs of wear/damage. Dual battery widget didn't work for me on some ROMs (can't remember which exactly but only the tablet battery was detected) but recent CM10 should have a separate icon with a dock through the battery icon while docked.
You can try the dumpsys utility from ADB, which prints out battery info so you may find something, but you can't manipulate data at all:
adb shell dumpsys battery
Also, did you try wiping the battery stats in recovery? If you have that option...
And lastly, lots of people are suggesting the freezer trick. To me that would be last resort but it looks like it's working for some people it seems.

Thanks for your detailed analysis and useful suggestions - just reflashed the CM10 8th Dec UNofficial rom y'day only and then recovered all the apps etc..But your idea of wiping out the battery stats didn't cross my mind! Should be there under advance I guess within recovery..(Have touch based 5.9 or something)
I would let the charger plugged into the dock and then try again the cold boot trick to see if that resolves the issue..Else would see if I have the option of wiping battery stats within recovery..
I am currently on vacation and hence donot want to open up the Dock here, freezer trick while harmless but I fail to understand logically how that would help Nevertheless would try it out if the above doesnt work..
Would report on the updates tomorrow (after 12 hours or so.)
The freezer trick is an oldie but a goldie. I used to do it with old hard disks that had certain problems and it worked in some cases, but usually you had an hour or so to salvage the data then it would die for good...
The logic behind it is that cold contracts the parts while heat expands them. So if it's a bad solder or something alike, the cold can temporarily fix it. But as I said, it would be a last resort for me and I'd triple seal it in ziplock bags to make sure no humidity can get in or out.
Let us know how it works out!

I am actually inclined to open up the keyboard and flip the damn switch now!
Also I did try cold booting (as the tablet had charged to 98%) and also wiping out the battery stats, but no change in situation still.
Opened the keyboard, flipped the switch but still no change..Orange light just keeps on blinking approximately every second..
Am at a loss to understand what could be the problem - the dock and tablet were bought in Sep last year and the dock has hardly been used (probably not for more than 20-30 hours in the last 14 months or so..)
Anyway I havenot closed the keyboard completely, would flip the switch again after sometime and see if that changes the charging behaviour in any way!
Anyone who has had success with dock charging issue after flipping the switch?
Update on previous post - Suspecting that it could be a software issue as well, I flashed an old Megatron Rom (based on CM9), and tested the switch again.
Switch off - Only EeePad's battery is shown
Switch On but no charger - Dock's battery is shown (symbol of battery + Keyboard) BUT with a red exclamatory sign, along with the normal EeePad's battery
Switch On and with Charger - Dock's battery is shown (symbol of battery + Keyboard) with charging sign , along with the normal EeePad's battery
So definitely an improvement as compared to CM10!!
Wondering if I should search for a Stock (Rooted ?) Firmware and flash that..Or probably just a firmware for the dock (does that exist?)
I'm pretty sure there is firmware for the dock (I think you see it in the settings while docked) but I don't think it's available, nor does any rom actually change it they just "use" it. For sure the best thing to try would be stock now with dual battery to make sure it works properly. Easy flasher will get you back to stock, provides root and can install different recoveries for you (there's plenty of others but this one seems easiest and worked best for me).
I'm thinking you're right on both accounts: the switch did work and there's a software issue somehow causing this. I've seen stranger things with custom roms. Glad you're making progress!

Thanks a bunch Lethe6 !! I have downloaded the Easy Flasher (V 0.8.3 Stable) and am downloading the Stock Rom from ASUS WebSite (300MB)..Its a slow connection here, so I would be able to report back by tomorrow only..But I am optimistic that Stock Rom should resolve the issue with the charging!!
Thanks once again for providing the links, I would report back tomorrow on the progress!
UPDATE on prev post - Flashed the latest stock from ASUS Website ..It does show the Dock Battery BUT at 0%
And from what I read here, I seem to have run out of lack as apparently there is a design flaw wherein there is no way a dead battery can be revived!!
(I ran out of warranty in September but as I wasn't using the dock really at that time, I didn't bother to look into the issue at that time..)
That really sucks But it must be a particular model because mine has went to 0% numerous times and I've never had that issue before. Did you try the freezer trick? At this point if it's supposedly completely dead, might as well give it a shot. Also some people suggest plugging it into USB for 5-12 hours, the trickle charge may help getting it going again. If the tablet is not 100% charged the dock won't start to charge either, so try just with the dock then try with both. Also check this out, sometimes strange fixes are the best.
You can probably find a refurbished dock for under 100$ during the holidays online, if you really need it.
Out of curiosity which series dock do you have? Mine is a B70 purchased in UK last September..(Tablet is also having a S/N starting with B70 and SBK v2)..
I tried the other fix as well that you mentioned - that is using a different USB charger, to my surprise without the tablet attached, there was no light on the dock. but if I attached the tablet, then orange light was blinking much quicker! So seems like the dock is quite sensitive wrt the current supplied through the USB cable..(Guess all USB chargers have typically 5V output or something?)
On using the original ASUS USB Charger, light blinks slower (with or without the tablet attached)..Have left the charger plugged in again ..in the faint hope that some trickle charge is able to revive the dock's battery!
And no, haven't tried the freezer trick as yet
Would probably contact ASUS UK once I am back in UK..
My "mobile dock" version (you can see it in settings -> about tablet -> mobiledock) is EP101-0213 and my tablet is SBKv2 C30 purchased in Canada 6 months ago.
There's a nice article explaining voltages and amps in relation with phones (which applies to almost any mobile device), however from what I read, the Asus wall charger has a different pinout for USB and feeds the power differently. I'm sure you can find the exact specs here somewhere, I saw people showing how to make your own charger.
But assuming you're right and it's sensitive to the current (Bad design? Cheap parts?) then it's possible that simply replacing the wall charger would solve it. I bought a spare one to leave at work for 8$ on ebay and it works nicely so far!
Just out of curiosity.. did you/can you try to connect it to another power source? Like a different house? I once had a problem with a charger that there was too much noise on the electrical system and the charger couldn't keep a decent current output because of the variations, so the phone would say it was charging but it wasn't; tested later at several locations and it was working. I know it's a long shot but hey at this point...
Thanks! Would have a look at the link you provided..Meanwhile I also came across this link which kind of indicates that using a 12V 1A charger fixes the dead battery! Would probably order the relevant stuff from ebay and see how it pans out! Just crossing my fingers at this point really and have also left the charger plugged in to see if it does trickle some charger into the dock!
After flashing the latest stock rom (instead of CM9 or CM10), I also have same version for my dock ending in 213..
Finally apparently it seems that USB Debugging off/on also seems to affect the dock's battery as per the various other charging related threads on XDA..
Thanks for all your suggestions - you keep me motivated to try out various things and I am learning new things as well !
PS : Forgot to mention that I had already tried a different power outlet (i.e. in UK) and now another one in a totally diff country!
Hi guys,
Been having issues with charging for the past couple of days. When I plug my phone into the charger it states that it's charging, but nothing really happens. The troubleshooting so far:
Have tested it on multiple different chargers, all having same problem. However, my Nexus7 tablet will charge normally on these chargers, so we can rule out it's charger related.
Tested for differences with the phone switched on or off. When phone is switched off it will charge, but not with the speed it normally does.
Running CM11 Snapshot M9. Did a clean install. Battery does not charge normally (read 1% gain per 20 min) on most stripped down version (without gapps + personal apps)
Looks like it's battery related. But I find it difficult to rule out what's causing my phone to act funny. The weird thing is that sometimes my phone will go for a decent charge, but this happens so randomly that it's hard to find any form of sense in this process. Also, when the phone is on and charging, the battery light will sometimes turn off. But when I activate my phone again, the battery light will bleep on as if nothing happened and everything is functioning normally (which is clearly doesn't).
Does anybody have an idea how I can fix this? Any helpful tips that can point me into the right direction to figure out what's causing this? Many thanks in advance!
did some more testing - can anyone help me out?
After some additional testing I'm fairly sure that it's either battery or chip related:
USB debugging does not work at all (storage is set to MTP). When I open Android File Transfer my Mac will recognise the Nexus 7 tablet, but not the Nexus 5. Debugging is switched on in Developer options.
When I try to use adb or fasboot, my device is not listed either, nor are any commands (directed towards phone) executed through bootloader.
In the about Phone section I went to check the Battery info. It will state correctly that the phone is being charged through AC or USB (depending on wether the device is connected to laptop or charger).
Does anyone have an idea how I can figure out if it's chip or battery related? I desperately want to find this out, because I bought my phone in The States and live in Europe... So in the worst case scenario the phone needs to go back to the US due to bureaucratic policies. Already had to go through this horrible proces half a year ago with a bad NAND chip, really want to avoid the hassle and lose my phone for at least a month. So if it's a battery thing I rather order a new one and replace it myself
Really really hope someone can shed light on this issue, running out of luck and options. Please guys, please
sounds like the usb connection, physical, is going. if it doesnt charge but randomly will, fastboot nor adb see it, i think its an usb connection issue. i had the same with my nexus one a long time ago, if i wiggled the the connection when it was connected, sometimes i could get it to charge some. fortunately, it isnt an expensive repair, and yours should still be under warranty.

Thanks for the reply, really appreciate it How much you reckon it will cost? Also, can I do this at any decent phone recovery shop? As stated previously, really want to avoid sending the phone back to the US. Once again thanks!

@simms22: ordered a USB portal online and replaced it by myself. Phone works again. Thanks for the tip!
Hi everyone;
I've been on this forum since 2010 (i think..) so it's been awhile. And in all my years working for cell phone companies and hacking everything from iphones to whatever's in your pocket (unless it came out in 2014) I've done most everything without real issues (or actual know-how.)
I recently (last July, I think?) gave my GF a Nexus 5 I'd been having a love/hate relationship with due to battery life and the fact that I kept breaking it and having to replace the screen.
When she got the phone, it started having intermittent issues. Running CM11 (updated whenever she lets me, doesn't seem to make much difference) on the THIRD separate battery I've had to swap into this thing (!) it will OCCASIONALLY show that it is charging, but no LED to indicate actual power transference/consumption.
And the % does not go up. And in recovery mode, battery status is listed as discharging.
So, I pull off the back, take out the screws, pop off the battery connector, plug it in (it charges after this) and reassemble. Which is a tremendous pain right in my ass. I would LOVE to find a ROM which will run on the N5 from about the android 4.0 era. It has had its current issues whilst stock, while running CM11 (all the various releases) and it NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM when I was using it on my old service provider, Sprint. (she has T-Mobile).
Any ideas? I'm technically capable - and I don't mind a charging port swap. I've done the battery to try to fix this, and no dice. I'll do the port if I have to. $15 that I can save though if it does confirm my suspicions and turn out to be a software issue. My only question is, is anyone else going through this with their N5?
And... will Lollipop be [email protected]!
Thank you all very much and I love this community to death.
If the battery is not charging in recovery mode, I hardly think it would be an OS issue.
Maybe try these steps: https://support.google.com/nexus/troubleshooter/3337561?hl=en (especially the Power Off from bootloader screen).
I believe I was running ART instead of Dalvik on the device when I had it. I'm switching it back to that; I'll let you know what the results are like.

No help this way. Switched back to Dalvik and it isn't as bad.
Did you try to replace the battery?
I have the new Shield K1, and it worked great for a few weeks.
Lately, my shield isn't charging as fast as it used too, and when it's plugged it, it doesn't show the charging icon in the status bar. I've tried dozens of cables and adaptors, none of them had any effect. The tablet still charges, but very slowly. OTG accessories still work fine.
When I first got my shield, it charged super fast (using my nexus 7 2012 charger), but now none of my 5v2a chargers work.
A point of interest, I have a portable battery pack that also used to charge my tablet fine. It used to fully discharge in about 4-5 hours with my tablet, now it takes about 14-15 hours, does that mean my tablet is not drawing as much power as it needs?
Shield Tablet K1 / 5.1.1 - rooted / TWRP - multirom
Figured it out. I flashed multirom for the original shield tablet, and it overwrote the firmware for USB support. To fix it, I flashed a full stock OTA image for the original shield to the K1, then I flashed the system image of the K1 lollipop. Multirom and USB work fine now.

If you are having slow charging issues on your Shield K1, here are a few steps that might help you. (please note: the average complete charging time for the Shield K1 is between 2-2.5 hours under continuous operation.)
-First off, your power supply. Your Shield Tablet requires a minimum 2A 5V power supply to charge at any reasonable rate, and I suggest using a 2.5A power supply along with a high quality cable to ensure quicker charging.
-Secondly, are you using the tablet while it is charging? Keeping the screen on, playing games, watching videos, or even apps running in the background while charging can cause it to slow to a halt easily. Try turning the tablet completely off and charging it then to see if it charges significantly faster, if so, that might be the problem.
-Thirdly, the tablet's USB port. Check to see if there is any debris in the Micro USB port on the tablet. Make sure the port isn't broken by gently wiggling the USB cable to see if it's loose, or if it disconnects in certain positions. Check that the cable is plugged in all the way, it should "Click" when inserted.
-Finally, you said the tablet is running a stock ROM, but do you have any custom recovery/bootloader installed? If so, try flashing the stock bootloader and recovery, and see if that helps.
If none of this helps you, and you still have a warranty in place for your tablet, I would suggest sending it in for repair or replacement.
Well, first of all I guess I'm gonna say that I'm not a newbie. If that thing to the left is of any indication, I should be able to diagnose most of those steps myself. And I did
The thing is, my tablet was charging from zero to full more than three days and it still wasn't on 100%. And that damn thing was turned off. The charger is the same I used last week when it was (like You wrote) about three hours. The cable is the same. Everything is the same.
The only thing that happened was that my kid was running a YouTube marathon and discharged the battery completely so it shut off. After that, slow charge as hell.
And when I said it is stock, it means it's stock. No loaders no nothing.
I was hoping You know like... Clear the cache or battery stats could help. I'm not in the mood to go thru the warranty hell. Not yet...

I'm sorry if I made you feel like a newb, I wasn't trying to, but I work with what I am given. Based upon these new factors, it is quite possible that your tablet's lithium-ion battery is suffering from over discharge or overheating. When a lithium battery is drained below a certain voltage, irreversible damage is done that typically significantly reduces the amount of energy it can store, as well as it's ability to charge. If a lithium battery is heated to over 90c the same or similar is true. Of course, the shield tablet has protections against these things, but nothing is 100%.
It may also be possible that the charging circuit in the tablet has somehow became damaged, either through an electrical surge or a 1 in a million drop scenario. If none of that is true, it's also possible that you received a defective battery to start with, and the symptoms are only showing just now. The battery could have been damaged by radiation (nuclear or magnetic). the tablet could have gotten wet. Maybe a defunct soldering job from the factory. Defective Internal Controller Circuits. Bit rot affecting the Charging firmware. Freezing temperatures affecting battery chemistry. High intensity magnetic fields messing with battery polarity.
See where I'm going with this? There are literally thousands of things that can go wrong, and it can be one of them, some of them, or none of them. Either way, I would recommend replacing the battery yourself or sending the tablet in for the warranty.
I was hoping that since Your problem was "fixed" with software that maybe I could use Your solution and maybe my problem is not HW related...
So far it looks that even on a charger (and "charging"), the device is still discharging....
Anyway, thanx for the help.
Hi all,
A little backstory first. I'm very new to XDA, so please let me know if my title formatting is wrong or if this is the wrong category or something else.
I had a Nokia 7.1 for about three years. It broke about two months ago, without a warning. The way it broke was rather strange: I plugged it to a charger with 0% of battery on it. I went to check in 10 minutes or so, and the phone was showing 38% charge. I thought that was weird since the phone should not charge that fast. I didn't care about it too much, powered it on and went to get some food. After coming back, the screen was pitch black. I didn't get to see if it ever even powered on, I only saw the "Android One" logo before going to eat. I tried everything to power it on, but nothing worked. I made sure that the charger was not the problem either. It may be worth noting that the battery life had been degrading for quite a while and wasn't great anymore. I figured that the battery might have died. So, I ripped the phone apart with a rather inappropriate tool (which was probably a huge mistake, but I didn't think it would matter at the time): a regular knife. As I was unplugging the battery from the motherboard, using the knife to pop the connector out, I saw a small spark. After some days of waiting, I got my replacement battery and installed it. Still nothing. I started to suspect a motherboard issue and took the phone to a repair shop. They confirmed it: it was indeed a motherboard issue. Now, I have a few questions that I would really appreciate getting help with:
1. My current theory is that the battery died first. When removing it, the sparks fried the motherboard and this is when the phone broke completely. Do you think this is possible? What is your theory?
2. Is there any possible way to fix the motherboard in this case?
3. If the phone cannot be fixed (which is very likely), is there a way to clone the phone storage onto another device / mass memory without being able to turn the phone on? The reason I want to save this phone so bad is that I have some important 2FA codes in there, can they be saved?
Any help would be greatly appreciated! If you need any extra information regarding this, let me know.
