I have a KINGMAX 16gb class 6 FAT32 micro sd card.
i tried to copy Backtrack5 (5gb) from PC to my sd card but despite the fact that i have 10gb space free, it tells me that i have insufficient space and it won't write.
any solutions? and why it does this?

You can't copy more than 4 GB on FAT32 formatted sd card.

Indeed, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_Allocation_Table for more information, you will need to reformat your sdcard to another file system format that supports larger files (but note if your using windows your options are limited!)

then what format do i use?
obviously not FAT16, an i heard that NTFS is read-only for android system

Well thats the thing if your using windows there isnt really a file format you can use thats natively supported with windows, but I believe you could use ext3 and use thrid party software to access it in windows

If you use a sdhc card you need to format with FAT32.

I assume that you use a MicroSoft operating system and have selected the option FAT32 during formatting. MicroSDHC cards like your Sandisk 4Gb can only be fully used with the FAT32 option.
Have you checked the size of the card using MS.
As a test, try to store small files up to the storage capacity to check if you can write beyond the 2Gb.
If you can't store beyond the 2Gb your formatting with FAT32 has failed.

thank u very much
i have tried to use more than 2gb
and i can do that
You can used MicroSDHC cards, but only with the FAT32 and sector size 16kB. Sector size is very important for right functionality.
I use Kinqston 16 GB MicroSDHC card (Class 2) without any problems.

[Q] MicroSD file format

I just got a new microSD, my phone formatted it as FAT32. I guess that's fine, but since everyone here is always extolling the speed of ext? I was wondering if I could format it with that. Running infused, so I was wondering if it would be ok with that on the external microSD also?

Android in 2.x is really set up to treat the SD partitions as FAT.
You would be unable to use the phone for USB storage with any Windows machine if the SD (internal or external) were formatted ext4.
for htc inspire kind of phone this is useful where internal memory is just 4gb.
so one can make a portion of microsd card formatted as ext2(4?) for app2sd(storing/moving apps to sd card)
here with infuse there is plenty of memory.
just my 2cents.

Format micro sdhc how in 3.2?

Hello
Just got my new Lexar 32gb micro-sdhc class 10 card. This comes formatted as fat32. This is unpractical because when movies and such surpass the 4gb limit.
How do i go about formatting this to something else? ext4?
There's no options for this in honeycomb.
Looked trough clockwork recovery and i only find /sdcard witch i suppose is the internal storage.
Anoyne have a clue?
if your movies and such surpass the 4Gig limit, then you're not going to be fitting very much on that 32gig card.
I'd also question if they are encoded in a format that will actually work/play back well on the Xoom?
That's not the point. I want to be able to transport large files if i have to.

Well, I use my 750GB Passpost HDD for really big files. Works fine with the OTG cable.
The point is. The card formatted as FAT/FAT32 doesn't support files over 4GB.
On my Nexus one i just formatted the card as ext4 trough CW. Can't find an option i CW for formatting the SDHC card / external1.

Sorry to give you answers you didn't ask for. I'm assuming you no longer have your phone to use for formating. There is an application from a third party (I want to say Panasonic?) that you can use on your pc to format the microsd. Don't use Rom Manager to format the sdcard or you will be in a world of hurt, as you so astutely realized...it will format your internal storage.
Still have my phone I'll use that. Thanks for the idea

Format of the SD card when your format it in your phone

I just formatted my SD card when it was mounted in my phone using the settings in the phone. Anyone know what format they use? I'm looking for Fat32 to load a ROM. Thanks

The Android OS uses the FAT32 file system for your sd card, but I'm not sure what you mean by needing it to load a ROM..

I can confirm that if you put in a 64GB mSD card and format it in the GS3, it will be formatted exFAT. I don't know about the smaller size cards.

yeah, depending on the size of the sdcard, you may need to manually reformat it on a computer. Directions from here.
You need to have your SD Card formatted to FAT32. exFAT WILL NOT WORK. So if you're like me and have a 64GB SD card, neither Android nor windows will let you format to FAT32 natively, so you have a few options.
Using command prompt within windows:

Use a disk management program like Acronis Disk Director (I think they may have a free trial but don't quote me on that).

Will changing from FAT32 to NTFS effect anything on my phone or SD card ?

Hi all,
I've just found a way to convert file system of my SD card from FAT32 to NTFS (which allows me to copy extreme large files to the SD card). But I don't know if it harms the SD card.
What if I do the same thing to the internal SD card in my phone ?
I'm glad that I can now copy an 8 GB file to my SD card .
Thanks in advance !

Not sure your phone can read a NTFS SD Card... Being that Android is based on Linux, there might be issues reading the file system or possible corruption.
I wouldn't do it. What are you copying on to your SD Card that's 8GB?
I do believe u can read from the card, but I dont think android supports write to ntfs
what file is that? a whole 8gb? movie??
