[Q] A noobie has a question on the OTA update - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I foolishly did the OTA update yesterday and finally got it installed right, just to see what it is and has. Since then seems when I use ADB I get an error: device not found. That is , untill I unplug and replug the phone in a few times , then a splash screen pops up about HTC sync , then I can get ADB to find the phone and continue, (it might be the wrong thing to do but I like adb to reboot to bootloader and recovery rather than holding the buttons down). After the OTA I see that it is now HBOOT 2.14, is this good or bad ? Another question with the string of RADIO-0.24p. 32.09.06 , how do I know what radio this is ? Remember this is another dumb A** noobie asking.
I do have S-OFF and unlocked, "tampered" removed, custom boot img. splash.

If you hold the power button and then pick reboot you don't have a choice of reboot, bootloader, or recovery?

You should downgrade the touchscreen firmware which is an easy process.

I can't find a post on downgradeing firmware. Plus I don't really know what that would do to downgrade. My main concern after updateing with the OTA, when I use adb it most of the time looses the device and I get an error :device not found. For instance, if I want to go to bootloader, I do the commands :adb reboot bootloader, it goes but if I try to reboot with adb it then looses the device and I usually get the error :device not found.
Could it be my PC and adb installed ? do I need to reinstall adb ? or is it something with the new update that might cause adb not to work? I was not having any troubles with adb loosing the device prior to the OTA, so makes me ask questions.
]You should downgrade the touchscreen firmware which is an easy process , now that you came up with this suggestion I am curious again.

[How-To] Downgrade your Touch Panel's firmware (and upgrade back) it is even a Sticky.
you need to downgrade touchscreen firmware so you can use aosp or sense ics roms if you do not you are stuck with sense jb roms. it is pretty important actually.
in bootloader you use fastboot not adb unless you are in adb sideload depending on your version of twrp.

Are you using TWRP or CWM as your recovery?
twrp
You will not be able to flash any custom roms as long as your bootloader is locked. The most you can do with the locked bootloader is use an RUU to get back to stock. Which bootloader are you on now? 1.14?
my bootloader is unlocked at this moment. um would my bootloader be where it says.. hboot? if so its 2.13.0000?
Correct, the bootloader is an all white screen, with the radio, hboot and other such info at the top of it. Well you are good then. Just so we are clear you have a HTC One S S4 right, you dont have a HTC One S C2? Thats very important that we get that info correct, we don't want to brick your device.
im almost certain its a s4.. i got it from t mobile here in the uk any check i can do from the bootloader to confirm?
If you're not S-off, did you make sure to fastboot flash the kernel after flashing rom in recovery?
From my Evo LTE, yup.
im s-on, and no i dont believe i did no
how would i go about fixing that?

You should have read and followed the instructions in the OP of the rom you downloaded so.
Try flashing boot.img in fastboot mode with typing 'fastboot flash boot boot.img' in terminal window. Hope you're familiar with the platform-tools in android development kit...
Else download here and
follow the step by step instructions.
reboot into bootloader with your phone connected to you pc. make sure you are in Fasboot USB mode, it should say that in the bootloader screen. Move the boot.img from whatever rom you flashed and put it in the same directory as ADB and Fastboot. make sure its named boot.img. open a command prompt that points at that same directory as ADB and Fastboot, type
fasboot flash boot boot.img

Is it still locked? And you're on custom recovery (twrp)?
You need to reflash the ROM you want. Then reboot into the boot loader from TWRP. Once there, follow my previous instructions.

how can i get the rom onto my phone now that i cant access the phones internal folders?
Is the ROM not on your phone anymore? If not, just mount from TWRP and copy over.

What ever i do, always reboot to this CWM !!!!!
please any one help me!!!!!!! thanks a lot!!!
You have installed an incompatible older custom recovery on the 4.2.1 bootloader. What you should have one is downgraded the bootloader from the energy thread to 4.1.1. You didn't need to downgrade your recovery.
Anyway I think you have bricked now.

You appear to have the same brick as everyone else. Caused by an older recovery on the latest bootloader.
If you can get fastboot to accept a lower bootloader or get it to accept TWRP 2.4.4.0 you should be able to recover but as you said it won't accept anything........

How are you trying to downgrade? Can you get to the booloader? If yes, try this:
In bootloader, wipe data
Reboot into bootloader
Then, using fastboot, flash system blob from Asus stock ROM using fastboot (fastboot -i 0x0b05 flash staging blob)
If that succeeds, flash appropriate TWRP from bootloader using fastboot, then flash bootloader compatible ROM
If it only (re)boots to recovery, then you'll have to hang in there until a solution is invented. Until that time, you're bricked

On a side note - can I flash 4.1 compatible ROMs on a 4.1 bootloader using the newest patched 2.4.4.0 TWRP without getting into trouble?

You wouldn't be bricked if you had read the instructions and followed them to the letter (and ask questions when unsure).
With that in mind - you can just as easily brick any device.

No that's just wrong for a bunch of people. At the time I did it. There was no warning, no indication of any problems. Just decided to do it at the wrong time. If it was 1 day later, I would have seen the bricked threads or had the patched TWRP.

Wrong? No.
Harsh? Yes.
Read read read. Learn learn learn. Then read some more. When unsure, ask questions. Don't just try, then read the manual tot learn how you screwed up...
I am unsure tot flash 4.1 bootloader based roms through the 4.2 patched TWRP. I am NOT just going to try, I am awaiting an answer for 3 days now.
Is a Tab(2) as easily to brick as a Transformer? Yes it is.

HTC One SV Revert to Stock Help (for update)

Hi All,
Of course the first thing I did after getting my new HTC One SV is root it and install LBE privacy protection to stop data leakage. However recently ive been getting a notification of an update to jelly bean through my phone provider (Vodafone Australia). However this will not install due to custom recovery image so the pre-install check fails. I cannot find stock recovery images anywhere and even if I did, due to presence of clockwork mod cant push images via Android SDK (skips straight past hboot to clockworkmod so isn't detected as an available device).
Can anyone help me get my phone back in a state where I can install the new update and the re-root?
Am not 100% noob, am familiar with custom roms and basics required to root and use SDK, this is my 3rd android device ive played with so hopefully this question is not tooooo SIGH.
Seems like HTC one SV is too new to have its on page in XDA support?

Hi there,
Unfortunately I don't have permission to post messages in that thread, nor does it seem the appropriate place to ask my question as it is an area for resources not help.
You must have 10 posts to write in some threads. Try ask in thread root for One sv. Have you bootloader unlocked ? What is your hboot number? For now when you update to JB via OTA you can't make s-off and next you can't back to previous hboot version.

Yes bootloader is unlocked, I have clockworkmod working, in fact I think that is the problem. If I could get back to original recovery image I think the OTA would work

What you have to do is, download the OTA Update (will be located to sdcard/download/), copy to pc and unzip it. You will find another firmware.zip, there is the jelly bean recovery inside. Flash this JB recovery over fastboot.
Boot.img/Kernel also have to be stock and maybe bootloader also locked (for this i'm not sure), then you should be able to install JB.
But think about, if you need S-Off, cause you only get this on ICS.

Thanks this sounds like the best advice I have had yet. MANY THANKS SIR!
However at the moment I have problems getting ADB/fastboot to recognise the phone is connected (using command line). Just says waiting for device and nothing happens. Is this because I have clockworkmod installed? I just got a new PC and installed latest ADB/SDK and latest HTC sync software so everything should be latest. I cant do much if I cant give commands unfortunately. If I solve this I will post an update.

Yes I thought that might be the case but was not having any luck with search results to find out what to do. Thank the internet gods for you! Going to your thread now XD!
I had similar issue with an update, the reason is that the stock recovery has some commands that neither cwm nor twrp have.
Here's what I did to fix it and update succesfully:
- extracted recovery.img from the update itself
- put it in the same directory as fastboot program
- attached the device with debug usb mode on on the pc
- command 'adb reboot bootloader'
- when the device rebooted in fastboot: 'fastboot flash recovery recovery.img'
- after that I was able to update without problems
note that you need to flash back twrp or cwm if you want root.
Of course you need unlocked bootloader, android-sdk's platform tools and adb drivers to do this, but you should already have them if you flashed cwm
good luck!

DUDE! THATS TOTALLY WHAT I WANNA HEAR, however, ive been having enormous trouble getting fastbood/ADB to recognise the phone is attached, I have tried the universal clockwork mod ADB driver which didnt work, and I havent had any luck folloing the instructions on Splatterhand's other threads in getting it recognised. The command fastboot devices just leaves a flashing cursor FOREVER! Other commands leave the message "waiting for device". According to splatterhand ADB/Fastboot wont recognise the phone as attached because of clockworkmod and therefore I cant push any commands or files...how did you solve this?
OMG
'adb reboot bootloader'
THATS THE MISSING PIECE OF THE PUZZLE!!!! THAT TOTALLY WORKED AND GOT ME TO FASTBOOT ON THE PHONE!
Because the phone wasnt booting into booloader (CWM instead) I just assumed the same would happen if I used that command from adb but no, it totally worked....i wonder if the CWM universal driver i installed had anything to do with that...
anyway, CHAMPION YOU!
Good tip on extracting the recovery from the OTA itself, will do, and I will try to get a copy to Old.Splatterhand for other vodafone Australia users so they have the OTA and recovery at hand.
Will report back if I have full success to confirm your steps!

So I took your advice and pulled a recovery image from the ICS Cricket (using the link in splatterhand's thread to stock resources) image. Downloaded the OTA and went to apply it, got past boot/recovery screen checks and all was looking good until i got to a screen with what looked to be an SD card icon and a loading bar under a larger phone icon with a green recycle type circle over it. That loading bar stopped about half way with a red triangle and exclamation mark (i.e. during the update process). Fortunately not bricked. It may be that I need the original Vodafone AU recovery image, or that there was something about the ICS OTA image that I used that made it fail. Not sure. Will try to find another stock recovery image.
Applied recovery from EU RUU stock and while that went fine and can boot into htboot no problem, when applying the OTA update it skips the fastboot and gets stuck on HTC One screen like normal loading except stuck.
I think I will try old.splatterhand's recommendation now that I am able to push things to the phone through adb/fastboot, so thanks for your commandline tip but now I must try flashing the JB recovery etc as outlined in his post.
The problem may be that the OTA is expecting a vodafone australia stock recovery as i seem to be getting different outcomes depending on which stock recovery image I apply...
I have sent Old.Splatterhand the Vodafone Australia JB OTA file for the main thread collection in case anyone wants it or the images therein, but at the moment it is of little use to me hehe.
SUCCESS! How to update to Jelly Bean from modded/rooted HTC One SV ICS
Ok so I should probably post this somewhere else so old.splatterhand can just post the summary. But here is what happened and a combination of your advice helped me so super thanks to both of you (madpausa and old.splatterhand)!
So I was in a situation where having rooted my stock HTC One SV and flashed clockworkmod I couldnt apply the Jellybean update that was constantly in my notifications bar (referred to as OTA update). When I tried to reboot into recovery clockworkmod would take over instantly and I was unable to run commands from fastboot command lines.
I was however able to download the update which could be found in (internal memory) "Downloads" folder "OTA_K2_UL_JB...zip".
In order to apply the advice of madpausa I had to first revert to stock recovery image before applying the recovery image from the OTA. So I got a stock recovery image from the cricket version (see old.splatterhand's thread) and flashed that first.
- put it in the same directory as fastboot program
- attached the device with debug usb mode on on the pc (select HTC Sync) and fire up the CMD interface for command line time (cd Android)
- command 'adb reboot bootloader' which actually did boot the phone into Hboot and not clockworkmod, so that solved the ADB/fastboot issue for me
- when the device rebooted in fastboot: 'fastboot flash recovery recovery.img'
Once I had reverted to stock recovery I was then able to apply the rest of madpausa and old.splatterhand's advice
What finally worked for me was copying that OTA JB update zip to pc my and unzipping it. Inside there was firmware.zip, which also needed to be unzipped and inside is the jelly bean version recovery.img.
- put it in the same directory as fastboot program (and remove the other recovery.img or overwrite)
- attached the device with debug usb mode on on the pc
- command 'adb reboot bootloader'
- when the device rebooted in fastboot: 'fastboot flash recovery recovery.img'
Then when I booted up my phone again it asked me if wanted to download and install the update, which I did. The phone rebooted, update applied, all good!
Hboot did not have to be re-locked, so dont go as far as locking your phone again.
Thanks to everyone's help for this one, I am now a happy use of Jellybean on my previously modded HTC One SV...now to get superuser back and stock that data leakage with LBE again!!!
Good to see you got your problem sorted out!:highfive:
And the download of OTA was succesful, thanks!:good:

This is the exact problem I had. I started trying to root my HTC One SV (Boost Mobile) a couple of months ago. I got past the HTC unlock bootloader, but I got confused by the rest of the rooting guide, so eventually I gave up on finishing the rooting process. Ever since then, it has said ***TAMPERED*** in hboot when I go in there. Well, just like you, I started getting the JB update notification in the OTA. I tried to install it like 15 times, but it always just rebooted into the existing image I had, which was the stock image.
So today I decided to try and finish the root and then find a JB ROM to install. old.splatterhand helped me out with getting it rooted, and it was a success. But when I asked him about JB ROMs, he said I had to have S-off. When we spoke a little more about it, he pointed me here, telling me that he helped you get the root back after you got through the OTA update.
So now, I guess I need to try and follow your instructions on getting the OTA update, and then go back to the thread where he helped you get the root back.
I'm a complete n00b to rooting android devices, but I'm pretty confident that I can do this with the proper guidance. I have rooted 2 Samsung SCH-i500s and today I finally got this HTC One SV rooted. I'm starting to see how it all works.
If you don't mind, let me know of any details of issues you faced that may not be in the guides you followed. That would be a great help.
Congrats on getting yours all done.
Thanks.

Do you type "adb reboot bootloader" in the command line? I wanna be clear on this before I make any moves.

[Q] Cannot find the resources to undo this soft brick.

I have an AT&T HTC One x. Its ***Tampered*** ***Unlocked*** HBOOT 1 .09. 0000 S-ON
I had been running an older version of TWRP, and decided I was going to clear my phone and do a fresh start. I know, I know, I should have made a backup, but I felt pretty confident in what I was doing, and was in too much of a hurry to rationalize this.
I wiped both the OS and previous version of TWRP in order to update to the new ones. While in fastboot I flashed CLEANrom and the new version of TWRP, and my administrative command prompt confirmed that they were installed successfully. Even cleared the cache afterwards. Now is the difficult part. I've researched, and researched, and cannot find a solution for this problem. I keep having a Boot Loop.... I'm stumped guys... I need some sort of help, be it technical, or something to drink lol
Previous ROM was CM 10, with TWRP and PA GAPPS :good:

Exactly which version of TWRP is currently installed? Did you flash the boot.img via fastboot?

It's the newest version of TWRP that is out, and yes, I flashed it via Fastboot, and it says successful on both the recovery install and ROM install.
Have you tried flashing another ROM? I asked for the exact recovery version for a reason, please provide that information.

Also it isn't completely clear to me that you're flashing the boot.img from the ROM zip via fastboot after flashing the ROM in TWRP. Are you extracting the boot.img from the ROM zip and doing that or not?

Why are you flashing roms via fastboot? -_- You're making your life difficult. Wipe everything in TWRP then flash in TWRP. ALso, you should really s-off and update your firmware/hboot. via RUU. You will likely encounter issues running a newer software on an such an old firmware.

If you would have read the thread, you would have noticed, that I am in bootloop, therefor I cannot access the recovery. And I have to have access to the ROM on my phone in order to flash anything via TWRP so this is moot. My question isn't how to flash roms, it's why am I getting a loop when I am successful on a clean partition and clean flash of both the recovery and ROM? And to me, fastboot is way easier than TWRP. I guess I could get a UART and try to debug the sequence myself, but I have more important things to do than that. I was posting to see if anyone had any similar problems. And this phone is an original model and I haven't really bothered with the security off, since I only wanted to get rid of sense in the first place. It was unlocked well before any commercial unlocker was available for the evita(Literally no stable CM10 at all at the time), so it's a little finicky in the first place. I ran the RUU after I re-locked the bootloader, and I'm at least out of the loop. I'm just going get to a more stable version so that this process will be more streamline when I re do my unlock and stuff.
So I guess the only solution at this point I have for any problem like this is to use the proper RUU. I tried a couple of times with no success, and it seemed the charm was to re lock the bootloader ( Fastboot oem lock) in order to properly and successfully get the RUU to work.:good:
Wth are you even on about? Of course you can access recovery in a bootloop. How are you getting to fastboot without accessing the bootloader? from the bootloader you can access recovery. If recovery isn't loading SCREW flashing a rom, reflash your recovery, 2.7 TWRP preferably. and then boot to recovery, mount your USB, copy the rom and flash it. Recovery is more important than having a ROM.
I know what I am talking about, do you know what you're talking about?
FFS I am trying to help you, there's no reason for you to be an ass. You're having issues BECAUSE you're flashing your rom via fastboot. You cannot flash a rom via fastboot.

You didn't read the thread. I'm not being an ass. The information is already there.I can not access the recovery at all. That's why I am in in this situation. And again, if you had read the whole thread, or the even the original post, you would know that I cannot access the recovery. The only reason I'm being as detailed as I am is so I don't have to repeat myself, as well as for other people who may encounter this problem. And Yes I know what I am talking about. If I didn't I probably wouldn't have gotten to this point, right?
Okie dokie. No point in arguing. You're right. I'm wrong. Glad it's all working now.

Exad is right in saying that the reason you're having problems is because you're attempting to flash ROMs with fastboot. That isn't how it's done. The correct way is to flash your ROM with recovery. You're barking up the wrong tree, not only that but you're arguing with experienced people who are only attempting to help get you out of the mess that you've gotten yourself into. You came here for advice, but there's no point in asking for advice if you're just going to argue and dismiss what you're being told to do.
You said you can't access your ROM so you can't flash anything, that makes absolutely no sense, which leads me to believe you don't really know what you're doing. Get out of the mindset that you need to use fastboot, it's wrong. You're dealing with people who have extensive and intimate knowledge of this device, trust us, we know what we're talking about.
Exactly why can't you access recovery? If you can issue fastboot commands that means you can access your bootloader, if you can access your bootloader that means you can use your volume keys to scroll through the options and the power button to select recovery. What happens when you do that? Exactly which recovery have you flashed to your device? I need to the full filename of the recovery that you've flashed.

S-on is a downright dangerous place to be, if the phone is also SuperCID (which is very likely, since its the AT&T variant). exad is right in recommending s-ff, as he is about a good many things.

OTA Update

I just received notification for OTA update. (134MB)
BLU_p0010UU_V11_GENERIC_5.1_20151123-0956
1. Stagefright patch
2. google security patches
3. Mcafee security 2015
4.Other bug fixes
Anyone tried it ?
i want to know if it is going to try and stick me with mcafee. . . happy to see an update, though!
you can remove mcafee after the update.
Can anyone upload ota?
Yes please. I'm rooted and it won't let me download the update. If someone could even offer a system dump that would be helpful.

If only for the stage fright patch
---------- Post added at 02:32 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:29 PM ----------
Also if someone could offer a system dump of the newest upgrade I'd be more than willing to cook up a rooted stock rom. I know I haven't been on the forums much lately at all but I remember working on stuff back in the t-mobile g1 days
Rooting after the update
I only first tried to root my Blu Pure XL after the update was installed. I find that the boot loader is locked and I can not find a way to gain access. I am not sure if the update added this major inconvenience but I suspect it did as the rooting method as described will not work for me at all. Any thoughts or suggestions?

ive updated with every ota and root works fine... boot loader isnt locked... try to flash twrp via fastboot, and if that doesnt work enable developer options in settings and "Enable OEM unlock"
but like i said Ive flashed back to stock FW with SP tool (compete stock boot, recovery, and system ver .11) so if any update would have locked BL it would have locked mine... but it didnt, doesnt, and hasnt...
Follow the thread about twrp... it gives you very easy to follow directions.
Yeah, I did the OTA update before rooting, and it didn't want to allow me after the OTA update.
I downloaded multiple files from all over the place, placed them in a "root" subfolder and it still seemed impossible.
Got it done AFTER 3 days
so...
using flashboot to flash twrp, after the OTA,
then using twrp to flash the SU.zip took 3 days?
what files and "root folder" are you referring to?
Sounds like sever case of lack of reading or lack or user error;
But Im glad you stuck with it long enough to get it working...

Thanks, hardest part was actually getting phone to boot into flash mode.
Specifically, holding Power plus Volume+ is fine, but you have to let go of the power button first, then the Volume+.
Plus, I had to adb reboot before getting the TWRP rom to flash properly....
Not my best effort, but findintg SPECIFIC instructions were difficult, and had to manually search for latest fastflash and TWRP......v2.8.6.0

Fastflash?
Manually search?
Under the Development heading there are 5 topics, 2 of which are for TWRP recoveries (3.0.2 is buggy but works, just takes long time to wipe and restore; and theres SOOOOO many posts about how to flash them and how to use SP Flash Tool... so once again; glad you stuck with it, but Im still going with user error due to fail to RTFM
