So I have been trying to figure out a solution to my issue but I figured that I would bring it together in a single post.
I have a 2.20 HOX with TWRP installed. I am rooted. I am wanting to install the 4.1 OTA update but whenever it goes to reboot into recovery it goes into TWRP and does nothing.
Now, I have found directions from people installing the OTA with TWRP installed but I am not wanting to do a complete wipe. I am wanting to only upgrade and keep what I have on my phone.
My question is simple:
Is there any way that I can do that with having TWRP installed or is my only option to do a clean install?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks will be given!

But in a noobie's honest opinion, its not worth the effort for the OTA , there are better custom roms in the forums here for the HOX than what you get from the update.
I tried all day yesterday then a dev helped me with the answer, you can't OTA update with TWRP installed
use this post in the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2181849&page=2
Redpoint73 gave me the right answer to get it done
"""It should be like this:
1) RUU to stock 2.20
2) Download and install OTA
3) Unlock bootloader
4) Install TWRP
5) For root: using TWRP, flash SuperSU
Steps 2 and 3 might be interchangeable""".

I just received my Asus back from being repaired for light bleed. It still has bleed but what can i do? It came back loaded with 8.6.5.9. Should I try to OTA update to 8.6.5.13 and root with the universal root? It is a B30 rooted previously.
Thanks
As far as the light bleed...I would say let it go. Most of us are dealing with the light bleed as well....its not a great thing but it really isn't a big deal either. Be happy that you have a TF that's rootable at this point. The root kit v7.1 claims to be able to root 8.6.5.x. So if all you want is root, then go ahead and update first, then root using that method. If you do not install clockworkmod recovery, you may be able to receive OTA updates, but will loose root and will have to be re-rooted. Another option is to root, install clockworkmod recovery, and update via a zip flash posted in the dev section. Once you install clockworkmod reovery, you won't be able to receive OTA updates and will have to rely on getting a cwm recovery flashable zip for updates. Or you can root, ainstall CWM recovery, and install a custom rom, which they will always include the latest OTA update builds. Its up to you.
Thank you. I should have known, but I did not know that the CVM was the reason I could not OTA update. I always thought it was the root itself.
Thanks for this info. I'm on it.
Yes you should be able to get it to work correctly

Thanks frankc123. Did it. Rooted and back in business!
Hey guys. So I am running 4.4.4 right now on my XT1033. Waiting for 5.0 now. However, I wanna root my phone now but I have some questions related to the update that I wanna clear first.
1, I already have unlocked my boot loader, will that affect my phone in receiving the OTA update?
2, Can I root my phone without removing the stock recovery, since I won't be flashing ROMs now and I wouldn't need it.
3, If I can't root without removing the stock recovery, how can I go back to stock recovery?
4, In order to update, do I have to unroot and lock the boot loader again or is that not necessary?
That's all. Keep in mind that my main concern is that I want root along with, when the time comes, the OTA update installation without any problems.
I am new at this so please bear with me. Hoping for an early reply, thank you.
Anyone?

1. There's no problem with unlocked bootloader in order to receive the OTA.
2. There's a method to root without modifying recovery. Search for "root moto g modaco" on google, and choose "option 1, superboot". (Since I am a junior member I cannot submit links) :crying:
3. You can also change recovery using fastboot or Mototools, flash supersu.zip and then flash stock recovery again using mototools, which is prepared to flash cwm, twrp or stock recovery,
4. You don't need to re-lock bootloader in order to update
Anyway, I read that you can receive the OTA being root, but only if you have not modifyied system (i.e removing system apk's) nor modifying kernel.
Hope this was useful!

Thank you, that really helped. And yea, I won't be messing around with the system apps, just gonna install Xposed.
2 more questions though
1, Is it possible to flash the stock recovery from CWM?
2, I read somewhere that the stock recovery can be extracted from the ROM of your phone. Is that true? That means that I can make a backup of my current ROM and also have the stock recovery with me, right?
Once again, thanks!

A recovery can be flashed from recovery, but only if you have it on a flashable zip, if you have it on img format, you need to use mototools or fastboot from pc. This second option is more recommendable
Concerning second question, I think I don't understand you. Original recovery can be found at the original firmware, this means that if you flash the original stock firmware it comes with the stock recovery, but I am not sure that you will recover stock recovery restoring a previous backup. Sorry
Hi everyone! Excuse my limited knowledge on this. I did not see any threads on this question that was specifically related to 5.1. So I just side loaded the zip file for 5.1 LMY47D to my UNrooted and Locked Nexus 5 yesterday. Before doing so I did a facotry reset, mainly to keep it a fresh install and minimize issues. I figured before redownloading all my apps and setting everything back up, I might as well go ahead and finally unlock and root. So my main question is rooting 5.1 going to be the same procedure as rooting 5.0.1? If it is not the same, then can someone point me in the direction of the most reliable instructions on rooting 5.1. I have not found any rooting instructions relating specifically to 5.1 that I would completely trust or that were pretty detailed.
Same method for old version ,
First unlock device , flash recovery via fastboot
"Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
Download the latest root zip from chaunfire website or you can find the thread in forum , just flash it by recovery that already flashed ?
Thats all my friend nothing complicated

Thanks! Straight forward! Exactly the answer I was looking for. I thought it might be different since I know there was difference between rooting 4.4 and 5.0. Anyways Thanks I will start checking it out now!
First let me thank this community for the MANY years of great help pushing my devices to their limits. I've never register or posted because I've ALWAYS been able to find my answers with a simple search and really never have much to add.
This time I can't find a good answer. I hope this isn't too much of an amateur question.....
I purchased my Pixel via Verizon (I know....) and have unlocked the bootloader and rooted.
I really don't want to mess with custom ROM's for a while and I still want the latest stock version. How do I update to the latest version without losing recovery and root? Example: I updated to 7.1.1 the other day, then wiped, unlocked, installed recovery and rooted. I went back to 7.1 and don't know how to update to 7.1.1 again or other future versions. I hear that flashing stock rom from Google will wipe recovery and root. Is that correct?
Thanks again for all the years of sharing your experiences.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel/development/tool-skipsoft-android-toolkit-google-t3482761 download that
https://developers.google.com/android/ota download OTA images
use the toolkit to sideload flash the OTA.

Thanks for the reply. Follow up question after scanning the toolkit description..... I'll look deeper into it in a bit.
This will retain root? Will using adb to sideload lose root?
I think so. You can just reflash SuperSU in recovery :good:

That's not possible. If you installed the 7.1.1 update you wouldn't have been able to unlock the bootloader again. So you must have had it unlocked before the update.

I updated, then decided to root so I factory reset which brought me back to 7.1...... I didn't even know it wouldn't work on 7.1.1 so I guess I was lucky to have done so. I just thought it would be safer to start with a clean slate.
It wasn't until I noticed I could no longer double tap to see notifications that I realized that was only in 7.1.1 and noticed that I couldn't update to it anymore.
Edit: Maybe when I said "wiped" I should have said "factory reset".

I figured I could do this as a last resort but would love to side load and just go about my day. Nice to know that there wouldn't be an issue, thanks.
I realize this isn't my thread, but... I flashed factory image to my Pixel but the recovery flashing failed. How can I get stock recovery back on so I can take the update?

Use the skipsoft toolkit and try again with a new factory image download.

There's a section 'Updating instructions' in the OTA page (linked above) with instructions. Not for the faint of heart if you're unfamiliar with ADB.
It's on the toolkit options after you select your device.
Do you mean you booted into recovery and reflashed because I've actually been wondering almost exactly what you have.
I have a VZW pixel that I unlocked and rooted via adb/fastboot and I've been wonder if accepting a Verizon OTA would unroot me, and relock the bootloader. The 2nd Verizon update as we know disabled depixel and grayed out the option in dev options but do current OTA updates (not images I downloaded myself) unroot and relock which would prevent me from unlocking and getting root again
A few months ago I followed one of tutorials and unlock the bootloader, installed twrp, magisk, and gain root. I am normally a flashaholic but lately I been busy and working and have stay on the stock rom and haven't touch it. So I don't know much about how things work. I noticed I have a notification for the new update. What steps do I need to take to download the new update from oneplus and stay rooted? Or can I just download the updated as is?
Edit: Also, if I wanted to install an Android 11 rom, are they stable enough for daily use? If so, any recommendations?
Thanks in advance.

There is specific guides. Regarding this. You use a app to download the update. Apply it don't reboot. Then in magisk flash a twrp retention zip. And magisk install on inactive slot. Then reboot. Is the jist of it
