Lapdock Mini PC Mod(?) - Android Stick & Console Computers General

Mods, if you think I posted on the wrong category, please move it , sorry... (and feel free to make it a sticky when I actually start the project)

So, I have a mk808 sitting on the living room, the idea was to replace the tv box, but didnt work that well... And I was thinking into building a cheap linux raspberry pi pc, but I know that the mk808 can run linux and I can buy a lapdock for 65£ (hebrew keyset... but it seems to have the normal letters, and I dont look down when Im typing anyway )
I have already seen a vid on yt that it works....
What I am really curious about is: have someone tried to mod it and put one of those mini pcs inside the lapdock? so that you can just put it on a backpack and dont have to mess with all those cables every dam time? can someone that have the dock tell if they think its going to fit?
Ill buy the dock in 2 weeks max...

AW: Lapdock Mini PC Mod(?)
I do have the dock at home and am about to do the same thing when I have some spare time. I am very confident that it would be very thought to get the sick inside of the lap dock but iam absolutely sure that it should be possible to make this tidy and clean so it is quite usable.
I am thinking of extending the cables and sticking the stick or box to the back or maybe into the space where the actual dock sits. Depending on the actual measurements of the device I might get then. We'll see

[Q] (Q) experiences with this dual docks?

I've recently got a new Desire HD and retired my HD2
now I'm in the process of choosing the right accessorise for it.
I found this 3 different dual docks and I can't decide which to buy.
If any of you have bought them already your advice would be most welcomed.
this one has only two pin's and the battery has four so I'm not sure if this would even work properly:
1. http://cgi.ebay.com/AC-USB-Dock-Bat...AU_MobilePhoneAccessories&hash=item41579e51c3
I used dock like this both for my previous HTC HD and HD2 so I know they usually ok + you get a additional battery (although it's obviously a fake, but on the other hand every battery on ebay is and I'll still need to buy one) + EU charger (in my case I need it)
2. http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Battery-Cra...724883?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item2a0eba6c53
newer had this one, but I like it the most and I'm interested mostly in it.
3. http://cgi.ebay.com/KiDiGi-2nd-Batt...630327?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item4aa567e8b7
If you have any other suggestion, please feel free to say. I'll be ordering the dock in a day or two.
I had the first one, the quality was absolutely terrible. The rubbers weren't all the same size so it was very unstable. On top of that the usb connector was too far up which means that my phone would hang a little bit to the left, because the USB port on the phone is not in the middle. And to top it all off it was pretty hard to remove the phone from the cradle which means you need to hold it down firmlly with 1 hand and remove it with the other.

waiting for your media dock... that sounds interesting
I got the last one. It is the same like from Adapt desire HD cradle. ( only brand is different, the rest remains the same).
I have the one with extra battery charger. It works fine.
It is a tight fit, but have no complains about it. You get two extra micro usb cables with it ( one for pc and one for extra charging).
Quality is fine, no high tech but it looks nice.
Thanks. I'm definately leaning toward that cradle. Can you put a link to where from you got yours?

I got mine from a Belgian / Holland-Netherlands shop. Its called www.padashop.nl or www.padashop.be
Its more expensive on the shop where i bought it. But they have a very good delivery service, i have it always the next day ( Belgium ofcourse).
Don't know if they ship to all countries but you can check it.

TB Design Flaw - debating returning

Am I the only one who noticed the charging port is located below the kickstand on the opposite of the hinge side?
That means no charging when placed on a table in landscape mode, wow really HTC, how did that pass design? should have been placed on the bottom or on the hinge side of the kickstand. Now we can't charge our phone while watching a movie, etc. while using the kickstand.
They want you to buy the dock apparently. At least mine works with the stand going upside down. Not ideal, but it does stay up
Didn't think about using it upside down, I guess that will work, still bad design. But you are probably right, done to make us buy the dock. Thanks
You could also do what a guy in the store when i went to play with one, who noticed this with the floor models said... just have it on the edge of a table? Also not ideal, but would keep you from dropping $$ on the dock option. But if your seriously using your phone to watch movies in a place where you can charge it/use the stand you might want to consider getting the dock. I see the main benefit of the stand/phone for movies is when your on the go and likely can't plug it in anyway.
Then again if I use as you described wouldn't the video be upside down? I don't think it rotates to landscape that way, unless I am missing something
No offense, but you seriously didnt know what was an issue before buying the phone? Not trying to be a jerk, but it was pointed out in each and every review I read of the device starting back at CES. It is to accomodate charging while in the multimedia dock.
Same complaint here! Anyone know if L-shaped power pigtail connectors are available?
It seems to be designed for left-handed people, well except for the kickstand.

I guess I overlooked it, wasn't concerned with the kickstand when looking at all the specs, bottom line is we should be able to view landscape with kickstand while charging. bad design.

a right angle microusb cord...can be found on amazon for under $10
edit: wow i cant even post the link or pictures cause i need a minimum of eight posts....
whatever im sure you can search amazon also
Debating on disregarding everything awesome about this phone because you can't charge and use the kickstand at the same time? Wow.
Design flaw probably not, just a compromise. If you look at the hinge side of the kickstand it goes in deeper into the phone probably causing the design not to have enough space for the usb... maybe they could have put it on the bottom but i'm sure there was a reason. I work with designers and they are quite thoroughl. And from the HTC team video for the thunderbolt those guys look like they know what they are doing. You could return it and not have LTE or wait for a phone with LTE and no kickstand. Pick your flavor

Yes, a right angle will reduce the offset, but it will still cause the phone to not set horizontally properly. Still gonna need something to prop up the other side of the phone.
You can always post a link without the http:// part, people can paste that into their browser.
been searching everywhere. Need a usb with a bend like this.

Verizon has no say in that.
I didn't realize it would block the kickstand until I tried it, so it's annoying but whatever. Just another silly decision like putting the kickstand in front of the speak. Stuuuuupid.
If the port wasn't there the dock would be harder to make (you wouldn't be able to just set it in the dock without plugging anything in), and if it was on the volume rocker side you wouldn't have access to those buttons while docked. So it was a design compromise and a design that gives people an incentive to buy the dock, which is a win for the manufacturer. HTC makes phones and accessories to make money, not to give us a free standup movie player or alarm clock. I guess they could have put the port on the back of the phone somewhere but that would look silly and you wouldn't be able to lay it down and charge. I bought the dock for my OG droid and it was well worth the money, I'll surely be buying the dock for my bolt when it's available.

All that makes sense, but HTC knows how to do docks right...look at the Nexus 1 and its dock (I have 2 of the docks). Separate charger pins that don't use the usb port (which is also a charger). Similar would have been a nice compromise.
If a kickstand was my main reason for purchasing this device, then I might consider a return. Sure, maybe it's a design flaw, but so far, if that's the only evil we have to deal with..
I'ma let you finish, but HTC makes the best 4G phones of all time.
..of all time.
All these little nit picky things confuse me, is someone actually buying this device to use as something other than a phone? Sure, it browses the internet, has 4g, checks facebook, takes nice pictures, is really fast, but I am sure the **** not sending a video out to my tv, or streaming to videos or you tube to my tv , or trying to play "real" video games, that is why I have a laptop or home pc, it's a phone. I must be confused.

I agree. Phone first everything else second. The kickstand isnt designed so you can watch full fledged movies. It is made for occassional use. If it really bothers you...buy the dock or return the TB and get Samsung Stealth which dont even have a kickstand.

I need real advice on this issue on the TF Dock

Ok, I love my TF. And I mean it is awesome. And just being to get a Dock/Keyboard is very cool too..
But I am having a hard time buying the keyboard/. Yes I know all the advantages. But this is what my wife says about it. If you wanted a laptop, then why did you get a tablet?
I have no way of arguing with her on this point. But I would use it if I bought one.
So can you guys give me some advice to help me decide?
If your wife doesn't understand why it's better you chance your wife ;-)
Try to show herramientas that with a keyboard you have the best of two worlds. A laptop for some situations a tablet for other.
Enviado desde mi Transformer TF101 usando Tapatalk
I enjoy having the keyboard dock simply because it bridges the gap between a tablet and a netbook. In addition to all the features it offers typing is so much more convenient while still experiencing the touch screen of the tab itself (whenever I use mine or my wife's laptop I actually try to scroll on the screen...).
You can ask your wife to remove the screen from a netbook when you want to use it separately . I'd say go for it! According to ASUS it will also be compatible for future tablets.
Now having the keyboard dock, I wish i didn't. I wish i would have picked up a good bt keyboard that i could interchange with my cellphone/htpc/future cell./future tablet. my .02
It all comes down to what your main purpose/use for the dock is. I personally like that you can hook up external drives etc. without issues, take screenshots, have dedicated android shortcuts and so on. I had a BT keyboard for my XOOM but it wasn't that great (admittedly, it was a cheap generic Apple keyboard that I taught some android shortcuts). If it's just for the sake of typing on a keyboard then yes, maybe it's better to get a good wireless (BT) keyboard that works with other BT devices. If you want connectivity and expandability then the dock is the best (only?) solution.

For me, I enjoyed using the tablet only. I got the keyboard/dock so I could type faster, and keep the tablet charged. Sometimes I use the USB & SD slots, too.
What happens now: I leave the tablet in the dock most of the time. I only disconnect the tablet when I want to read or play something that works better without a keyboard/dock.
The dock transforms your use from primary tablet, to primary tablet/dock. HTH.
One of the ways I justified it is that with any other tablet you have to buy a BT keyboard anyways, and in addition the dock when folded PROTECTS the tab's glass, basically eliminating the need for a case or sleeve
+1 To " get a new wife"
I make good use of the extra USB, SD, and battery so its really justified for me.
And +1 to fldude99 about protecting the glass. If you think it will benefit you for what you do with the tab then get it. I for one, love it.
I decided to go ahead and get one. Found a brand new one for $123.00. I can always use it on the next transformer I get that happens to have a number 2 next to it.
good for you, oh, and a word of advice, you might like to know what one would do about the weird trackpad and scrolling problems, and that is this: get a usb mouse... It works great with the dock and makes for the full "netbook" experience. (I would go for a wired one though because I occassionally have problems with my wireless one)
hope I could make your experience a little easier
cost with dock and tf is about 5 or 600 cost for new laptop, over 700 dollars. point made

Considering I got my TF + Dock for $230 shipped brand new, Im thrilled with this thing. The dock is amazing because it gives you the flexibility to work or play. It's very portable with or without the dock, but I usually take just the TF with me when I go places and I dock it the second I get home. Not to mention the extra battery life is a blessing. I say go for it man, you won't regret it.

It makes typing a hundred times easier and the extra battery are the main reasons I love the dock.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
(1) Laptop battery doesn't last 16 hours.
(2) Laptop can't transform into a tablet when you just want a tablet.
(3) Laptop doesn't have multi-touch capacitive screen.
(4) Laptop feels like an anchor.
Just a few off the top of my head.
I've found that people, ipad users in particular, have a hard time understanding choice. To them the issue is whether you want a tablet or a laptop. What if you want both but don't want to carry a laptop and a tablet around?
Earlier today someone on the train asked me just this question. She was crazy about her ipad 2. So, we talked about our tablets because she was curious about what I have. The question inevitably came up. Why didn't I just get a laptop? I gave her my short answer, which was "I like having the choice to either have a laptop or a tablet". She just gave me a blank look.
This goes back to what I've been saying for months. Apple has done a very good job at convincing people that you cannot be productive with your ipad. You need a laptop for that, preferably the macbook air. So, this woman, like so many others I've talked to, was puzzled why I wanted to do work with my tablet. She couldn't imagine typing for too long on her ipad because the softkeys are just horrible to type on if you're doing substantial typing. Even after I plugged my Tf into the dock, she still had trouble understanding how I could work with a tablet. I had to show her some documents I had put together on nothing but the TF and my powerpoint presentation.
By the time she got up to get off the train at her stop, I still got the feeling that she was still not convinced you could be useful with the tablet platform.
Last month, ,I read an article that claimed the author believed strongy the future will belong to the tablet-notebook hybrids. I guess only time will tell. I agree with that article, though.
i damaged my tablet by packing it with an extension cord for a flight - the prongs dug deep into the screen and damaged it somewhat - d'oh
so i picked up the keyboard primarily so that it could protect the screen
what i got was a keyboard that seems even better made than the tablet
i like the keyboard too for note-taking or long emails, while keeping the tactile yumminess of a touchscreen

Pen drive HDMI Android TV

One of these days I was reading engadget.com and they´ve mentioned that a company was going to release in 2012 a pen drive sized hdmi device that would allow you to run android on you TV. Since then I´ve lost the link and could not find any more info about it. Does anyone know what I´m talking about?
Isn't it just a thing which copies your screen and sound, and display it on the tv via HDMI?
It is not this but it is something similar...it doesn´t look so cheap though

It´s not this one either http://www.fxitech.com/products/ but it looks like this is something to look forward to. It sounds extremely cool to be able to run Android on my hdtv
I wanna one of this!!!
for sure... I'll buy one

i think that you can save your money and, maybe, buy some wireless and much cheaper keyboard... you don't need the keyboard dock to play games... so it is better to buy mouse and wireless keyboard saving some money
If we consider both it is a matter of opinion and use.
dock = $123 amazon, includes usb port, sdd card access, charging, and a decent keyboard.
no dock = usb port $25, usb to sdd card $10, android bluetooth mouse and keyboard $90 - can't charge while using usb, with most cases tf300 has to be inverted to place usb at the top for use, charging, and orientation can be an issue when it switches to portrait mode plus power button hard to access when placed at the bottom.
Personal preference!
Keyboard dock @ gamestop!!!
MAN i got my whole setup from game stop...
if you have some old games you dont want trades are up on doubles right now through the weekend...
I FREAKIN LOVE IT... the key board is smooth to use, has a very reflexive touch pad and it normally takes me about 2 days to kill all of my battery with the power on max performance... GAMESTOP will even demo it for you...to let you get a feel for it... i like it WAY better than my laptop.... its like having a notebook...so...like he ^ said...user prefence... you decide...i think its well worth the buy...
how about chating ? facebook ? good use ? smooth ?

Buy the dock. Very well done.
also, I just smashed my screen this week.
for 4 months it lived in the dock in my backpack, and I would just pop it out of the dock if I didn't want the keyboard...
I got a big ole silicone case for just the tablet last week. took 1 week out of the dock for the screen to get smashed...
buy the dock because when you dock it, the battery in the dock, initiates a charge on the tablet battery until the dock is drained completely... then you can undock it with a full charge, or a lot of charge at least... and take the tablet further if need be.
the battery in the dock gives you STUPID awesome battery life.
it's only $150 full retail price for the dock with battery inside it.
I'm looking at $200 to replace my digitizer/screen.
dude. Get the dock. you're droppin all that dough for the Transformer tf300... get the $150 dock too!

facebook is awesome to use on it especially with new update for the jb. when asus designed it they definitly put the best of the small size to match the tablet and the versatility of a fully functioning keyboard... you can even use macros like you would on your pc like ctrl-c and such with some setting adjustments. i like how fast i can type without switching between sym and abc especially if you message or type alot like me. and i personally cant stand having to touch keys on top of my text where i CANT SEE what im typing...or crane my neck to see my screen when i lay down to use it...and unlike my bulky 22" laptop, it actually FITS MY LAP!!!... so yeah... I deefinitely would recommend this for ANY & EVERYONE USING AN ASUS TRANSFORMER... besides...who of all your other friends have tablets and how many can go BAAAMMM!!! MY TABLET IS NOW A LAPTOP!!!???... BUT like i said go to bestbuy or gamestop an take a test drive my friend...well worth it...hope i helped...message me if you have any other questions...
P.S. the dock also has a usb port which i love using with my 500GB external HDD and external bluray/dvd/cd burner, and a regular sd card slot so if you have a camera with old school sd cards you can just upload pics to FB etc all from your ASUS or but the micro to sd adapter for like 5 bucks and edit stuff from your phone...the possibilities are endless with this thing...AND quick buttons for all your settings and programs right infront of you at your finger tips.
P.P.S- IF ANYONE FROM ASUS IS WATCHING THESE POSTS, I WOULD SUGGEST HAVING A CHAT WITH BEATS AUDIO AND INSTALL TWO LITTLE SPEAKERS AT THE FRONT BOTTOM OF THE DOCK (LIKE HP AND DELL HAVE THEIR LAPTOPS SET UP) FOR WATCHING MOVIES/NETFLIX, LISTENING TO MUSIC AND PLAYING GAMES, ETC. GIVE THE BIG COMPANIES A RUN FOR THEIR MONEY!
In Ireland, is ebay the only place to buy the keyboard docks?

i got the tf300t dock and have used it happly the BATTERY LIFE IS HUGH WITH THE DOCK get one youl love it
If your still thinking about it, just get it. 88.00 USD on amazon. its amazing since it adds more batter life, sd storage and usb connection. Wouldnt recommend docking it and carrying it like a laptop though, iv'e heard people cracking their screens from it.
The only reason I buy this tablet is because of it's dock. If this tablet didn't have a keyboard dock like this, I wouldn't even consider this tablet.
I use this keyboard mainly for school notes and it's portability. So I think this keyboard is really great for me.
The keyboard is a little small so it takes some time to get use to. The mouse touch pad is surprisingly well built.
Depends on what you do with the tablet. If you travel and type a lot with this tablet, I think it's worth it. But if it stays home most of the time, then I think it's better to just buy a bluetooth keyboard and mouse for a much cheaper price.

It is very much worth it to buy the dock. It was so nice to have an android netbook where ever I was, but then I did something and the dock shorted out somewhere, sent it into asus a week ago and havent heard anything from them yet.
