[Q] Random vibrations? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Having a bit of a strange issue where my Galaxy S3 will randomly vibrate/wake for no reason when plugged into a T-Mobile universal wall charger. Seems to happen when the phone is jostled or picked up; it will turn the screen on and vibrate as if I had a notification, but I don't. The charger is a little bit old, since it was purchased with a BlackBerry about 2 years ago, so perhaps that's the reason. I was just wondering if this is something to worry about, like my USB connector going bad or something. It doesn't seem to do this when plugged into other chargers (will occasionally do this when charging on the OEM Samsung dock, but rarely). Thanks in advance.

It could be the charger that you are using. I have the same issue using my old DX charger but not with the charger that came with the GS3. With the older chargers it tends to lose connection and the connect backup, as if you unplugged it and plugged it back in.

Yeah that makes sense; do you know if I might have damaged the charging port by using that old charger or is that unlikely? I haven't really noticed any other issues with charging so I'm hoping everything is fine. Made sure to stop using that charger just in case though.

I still use the charger, it's just not idea if you are looking at something when it is plugged in. As far as it damaging the port I don't think so, unless your trying to plug it in upside down!!
I think the charger that came with the S3 just fits tighter and the older chargers may just be worn down by use. That's just my thoughs!!

Charging port going bad?

My phone has been hating chargers lately. I would say that my charging port is definitely going bad, except that there are a couple of chargers that do work pretty well with my phone. I bought a new Verizon universal car charger, and the first one worked well for about a month before my phone started connecting and disconnecting repeatedly. I took the charger to Verizon and the tech support lady took my phone and charger away for a few mins. She said that my car charger had a short in it. OK. So now I have a new one, and it is working well. But as for every other charger that I use. They all seem to have a very difficult time connecting or staying connected. If I move the cord around, the phone will begin to charge, although at a VERY slow pace. All of my high capacity chargers are doing this as well. Hours to charge the phone fully. Are all of my chargers simply going to crap, or is my charging port taking a slow dive? Ideas?
If I were you, I would get a wireless charger ASAP, to save wear and tear on your charge port. There are a few if you search. Verizon has one also.

Have you checked to see if your phone is charging by USB or ac? I ask because a lot of times my phone says USB even though it is an ac source.

Now that's not a bad idea. I forgot that these things have a wireless charging option. It's a little expensive if I remember right. I do have a $100 gift card from Christmas for Best Buy (hate that place!).

It does show charging by AC. I'll check on all of my chargers to be sure. But to clarify, on most chargers, my phone disconnects and reconnects to the charger over and over. It's as if either every charging cable I have is bad, or my charging port is loose or not getting a good connection. I have to make sure my phone sits even with the charging cable, or it won't charge at all. Vehicle chargers are the worst because of the constant movement in a vehicle.

Ah, okay. Didn't read that part haha. If i were you and had another phone to temporarily use i would send the phone to Samsung for warranty repair.

Yeah...it is still under the Verizon warranty. I have taken it up there, but I didn't want to be an ass, insisting that it's the phone, when maybe the phone is just picky about chargers. They did try to swap out my battery, as a first step. I'm probably gonna go up and insist on a replacement. I just don't see it being every other charger. I have owned several other smartphones that were power intensive, such as the Galaxy Nexus and the Droid X. They didn't have this problem.

[Q] Need Replacement Charging Port

The tablet needs a new charging/interface port and was wondering if anyone knows where I can get one?
I have searched Ebay and the net for a used/new one. The port looks fine but when plugging the cable in it won't charge. Sometimes I can get it to if I push and hold it just right however this is tricky to do and does not work often. So right now it is a dead brick. The pins must not be making full contact for some reason.
Ive bought parts from these guys before, I don't see a charging port but might be worth giving them an email and asking

Thanks but I would rather not have to order parts from Sweden. If I have to I'll just keep watching Ebay. Every so often one pops up but doesn't last very long.
Good luck
The parts I ordered took about 4-6 weeks to arrive iirc
Just installed a new (used off Ebay) charging port with fingers crossed that it will allow the tablet to charge. I also have a new high quality charging cord (PWR+) and two ASUS wall chargers that I know work. Plugged the tablet in and was relieved to see the tablet come right on and show it charging. Let it charge to about 20% and then decided to unplug it so I could put the ring back on the tablet so it is all back together. Get the ring on and plug the tablet back in and nothing. I'm about to throw this thing in the trash right now. So fed up with these charging issues. What changed? All I did was unplug it, put the ring on, and plug back in.
So for kicks I decide to try the other wall charger and what do you know....it came on immediately and started charging and is still charging. I'm afraid to touch the thing now. Seems once it is charging and undisturbed it will charge to 100% no problem. However, when going to recharge it won't charge. Could there be something in the charging mechanism causing the thermal to trip in the wall chargers? Is there possibly a small short somewhere in the charging mechanism? Anyone have an opinion on why this is happening? Only other thing I can think of is doing a full wipe/reset and maybe flashing another rom (is currently on newest Android Revolution HD) once it is charged up.
Could the ring (I assume you mean Bezel ? ) or the screws near the port be shorting the charging port to earth/ground/chassis ?

Yep.. Sry.. The bezel. Not sure how but anything is possible. Would indicate to me a faulty charging port or charger cord and is happening on multiple. Tablet is still allowing me to charge it at this time after switching chargers and with the bezel on so will have to see how it goes.
Sent from my tricked out S4.
Fingers crossed it was a coincidence with the first charger, if not, I'd try taking the bezel off again and see if you can spot the short / see if it works again with the bezel off, or even just with the screws out

Very strange charging problem!

Ok, first a little background on this issue...
After having my S3 for about 13-14 months I started having charging issues. The charging port was very "loose" and I had to make sure my charger cable was in just right to get my phone to charge. This was annoying, however was out of warranty and didn't want to pay vzw for an insurance claim. This got worse, and eventually I noticed my phone would only charge with 1 specific usb cable, 1 specific wall charger, and 1 specific car charger.
Well, I finally called Samsung and explained the situation to them and they had me chip my phone to them and they would repair it, free of charge. When they had it, they replaced the charging port, the headphone jack, and the screen. I received the phone back after couple weeks, super excited, and immediately charged it up with the cable I had next to my bed. New charging port felt perfect, nice snug fit, etc... Well, after a few days i hooked it up with the original usb cable that came with the phone, nothing happened. So i started messing around and realized that the only usb cables that will charge my phone are Motorola brand cables! At least the 2 cables I have work, and not a single other cable I've tried works! This includes stock Samsung cable, many cheap 3rd party cables, other friend's S3 cables, none work. Also, I have this cheap car charger that is the type you plug a USB cable into that works, however any other car charger I've tried does not work either.
Also, when i say the cables won't charge my phone, it also won't connect the phone to a PC. They do absolutely nothing.
Does anyone have ANY idea why this is happening?!?! It was an issue before Samsung repaired my phone, they replaced the charging port, but I still have this issue!! I can send it back to Samsung for them to look at it again, however my backup phone, a Razr Maxx, just died also. Seems like the battery went dead and now I can't get it to charge, but that's another issue.
So, any ideas?!

What rom/kernal
It doesn't matter. It does this when it is totally stock and rooted. Right now I'm not rooted or anything because it looks like it may be going back to Samsung again.

I think the smart charging circuit may be messed up
Really? How would that cause the phone to not work with any cable except a certain brand?? I'm just really curious and this is driving me insane!!

I would say you are putting mechanical stress on the charging port. This could be from some misaligned or mis-made cable or somehow pressing or pulling the charge cable when its connected. I've never seen this reported by anyone else, but the mechanical connections are not indestructible. If it were a common symptom with 100 million S3s having been sold, there would be a firestorm of complaints.
I have a similar issue. I'm not sure if it's the device or the ROM (CM nightlies).
Certain cables force the screen to turn back on, which means I get negative charge because the screen burns more than the charger is capable of supplying. Other cables are fine. I'm still looking for the pattern, it's super annoying and causes me to have to turn my phone off completely at times so as not to lose my battery altogether. I'm still trying to solve this, any help would be appreciated.

Further info- it's not the cable, it's the converter at the end. I think it has to do with amperage of the charger- if I use the stock samsung one I'm good, it's putting out 1.0A. If I use others that are fewer amps (like 700 mA) it's unpredictable. I suspect a kernel thing, I might download different kernels to play with it.

Always use chargers that is 1 A - 2A the circuit controls most of the charging regulating amps and voltage
Yes, I agree about using good chargers, but my phone wasn't always this way. It used to charge with anything, but no longer.
I enabled fast charge on Imosyen's lean kernel. That might have made a difference, but I'm not positive yet.

[Q] Qi charger making device super hot

I'm coming from years of android phones and have always purchased wireless Qi adapters for them. After experimenting with several different brands of receivers over the years, I became a believer in the Nillkin brand. They cost a little bit more but they are way better built. I have always bought this receiver and have never had a single issue with mine or my wife's galaxy notes. I recently picked up a note 4 and after using it for a few days, I realized why I stay with the note brand. Absolutely amazing phone. Naturally I waited till Nillkin made an adapter for my phone and picked one up.
I placed it on charge the first night and when I picked it up in the morning, I nearly dropped it due it being so hot to the touch. That has never happened in any of my phones. Obviously something is not right with this thing.
Here's the weird thing....
I'm running "SmoothKat" rom but have a stock rooted back up. Oddly enough, when I restored to stock rooted and placed it on charge, It would still get quite warm but nothing like it was on the custom rom. I also tried turning off Fast charge option but no dice. Anyone have any advice? Is anyone else having an issue with the wireless charging making the phone hot?
BTW I'm using the TYLT Vu charger.
Thanks in advance...
Same charger here, using the OEM charging back. No heat issue.

Weird... It has to be this Nillkin receiver. I just searched around and noticed the Nillkin receiver has a significantly larger output of 850Ma. Most other receivers are 600-750 max. Could that be the issue?
I have a couple of receiver cards too, no heat issue with them but could not get tap to pay to work.
Hmmm that's never happened to me, and I have the same Nilkin charger. Maybe something with your phone?
Was the charger equally as hot?
Very strange. It seems the issue has worked itself out. I woke up yesterday and the note was slightly warm to the touch. This morning, completely normal temperature.... Weirdest thing... its like it learned what was going on in the past few days and fixed itself.... Mind blown.
Thanks for the help!
I had the same thing happen. I was using the OEM back with my TYLT, Airdock and Qi infinity chargers and it was running cool. The phone was too thick for my case so I switched to a Enpower transmitter with the original back. It was much slimmer but got WAY too hot. (I only tried it on my TYLT and decided not to F with it anymore.)

That's really weird. It may be something with our phones? I don't like the bulkiness of the oem cover so I was determined to figure out what the heck was going on. Shame I wasn't able to get to the bottom of this. Ill keep this thread updated as the days go by. I'm sure we aren't the only ones that had this issue.
Maybe they use the extra thicknesses for heat dissemination. It has a metal plate near the bottom on the inside, maybe that acts like a heat sink. I am sure their engineers did not take the decision to increase the thickness lightly, there must be a good reason...
And yes they should have baked it in by default. A flagship phone needs this built in, they were just greedy for accessory sales I guess.
Well, I'm glad the problem solved itself for you, OP. I don't know why that would have ever been an issue, but hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Same problem here with *Nillkin receiver, my note4 get really hot on charge.
My nexus 7 gets hot when charged using Nokia wireless charger. It stays hot even after charging is done. As if it won't stop charging so the energy needs to be dissipated somehow how so lt just generates heat.
I would NEVER use wireless charger on my note 4 because heat kills battery life.
I use a cheap ebay charger and wireless receiver that fits into the normal backcover...
It warms up while charging but nothing too hot. Just like charging normally by cable... Ofcourse, the cheap wireless receiver only gets 600ma max from the wireless charger.

thats just silly. the note 4 stops charging and cuts off the qi charger when charging is done. you can see the wireless symbol disconnect.

Then the fault is with the Nexus 7 ? Sometimes i pick it up from the Nokia charger hours after it is done charging at it is still very warm, even almost hot.
Tbh I wouldn't be surprised. The nexus 7 I have has lots of issues like random reboots, touch screen issues. Many people have these problems. ASUS really screwed up the 2013 nexus 7.

Wireless charging issues

Sometimes my Note8 does not charge on my Samsung fast wireless charger. No, this is not a position issue.. Sometimes, it just doesn't charge. The solid bluelight of the wireless charger although turns on. The only way for me to wireless charge again in this state is for me to reboot the phone.
Anyone else run onto this? Very annoying and it happens at random times.

I am surprised no one ran into this issue. The only thing I can think of that would cause this is some service I disabled.
I have the same issue and unfortunately have not figured it out. Mine will charge for about 10 seconds then will start blinking, I am using the dock fast charger from before the note 8 though not the newest one.

I had the same issue when trying to use the older wireless charging stand. I think it's a power issue because I tried an older iPad charging block (one of the bigger ones that has higher wattage or voltage or whatever) and it charged fine on the older stand. It didn't say it was fast charging but it did charge faster than average. I think I'll just stick to the newer charging base I got from the Note 8 promotion.
I had the same issue. I realized the case that i was using was the issue. Had to take it off to use the wireless charging.
I noticed the same thing recently. The wierd thing is, I also have the old original flat slow wireless charger and I use tha every night with a case, it just won't work on the fast dock one. Only without the case, or I think if i lay it sideways it works.

If it is not the case...
This issue has to do with power supply. Try different cables or wall plugs. I have had this issue in the past it could be sending too much or too little voltage. It blinks like that and turns off to protect your device from getting damaged.
I actually had to use an older wall plug to get my older wireless charging pad to work. The quick charge wall plug was pushing too much voltage.

if I remove the case it works perfectly. With the case its the 10 second deal; However, I took your advice and switched out the charging brick to another samsung fast charger ( all i have to test with at the moment) and it looks like it may work. I will see if I have a better one at home but it may just be with the case its having to emit more power like you mentioned. not sure but ill try that out for now.

Looks like a common issue where the old wireless charger (pre S8 ones) had problems. My fast wireless charger had no issues with the S7, just the Note 8.

Many users are facing this problem. While searching the web I found one user giving the best solution for this problem at Samsung community, He says that he has the same issue if the phone is standing straight up. However, when he put it on its side he never seems to have the problem.

Yeah. I saw that but its still not working correctly for me.
Anyone notice that it only charges when the screen is OFF?
I have this issue sometimes randomly on the new flat fast charger. Does this with my wifes S8 as well. My older standing type fastcharger that I got for my Note 5 works flawlessly. I feel like it's the flat fastcharger base itself.
Ummm... now this crazy phone is charging FLAWLESSLY. And I havent changed a thing...
