[Q] DO I need root?

Hello everybody.
I've reading the Infuse thread for some time now.
I saw some recurring themes that I would like to write about.
I came up with a survey that I think may be helpful.
(Try to see the humor in it.)
Here is the question: Do I need to root my phone; do I need a custom ROM?
Do you use your phone to make phone calls? If yes then: No, you do not need to root.

In the process of coming up with this survey, I have concluded that it really doesn't make a whole lot of difference what phone model, what brand, what CPU or graphics or dual cores and what not...
It doesn't make a whole lot of difference if it's FROYO, GB, HC, ICS or FRIED DONUTS IN BUTTER AND LARD,
It's all about the addiction and the obsession.

Hey, I really apologize if I had offended anybody.
Honestly.
Mea culpa.
That was never my intention to insult or offend anyone.
You guys are really taking this way too seriously.
I wrote it as an attempt at humor in the general section and the Q/A section...not in the DEV thread, out of respect.
As I was trying to help new users out, I was running into the same questions over and over again.
If some of these guys would just read a few pages instead of asking the same questions over and over again. If they had bothered to surfed through the threads, they could have seen it.
I wrote it as a tongue in cheek comment...poking fun of myself as I had tried to learn the android and custom rom process. I had soft bricked and boot looped my phone plenty of times. I got a usb jig. I had read up on acid, thunderbolt and adrenaline etc..and opened up roms to try to understand it as well. I was poking fun at myself in the process. Until this August, I owned a flip phone and thought it was the bomb.
If you can't really see the comment as a funny for what it is, I apologize. I mean it. Take it to heart and move on.....

That my friend was perfect.. honestly.. So true.. everything up there is just hilarious. I don't understand how you couldn't see the humor in it.. Getting off to the usb as you stick it in your phone.. I loved every minute of that (reading the post.... and maybe other undisclosed things I WILL NOT mention here..... ). Thank you for bringing some comic relief to the barrage of the same old questions getting asked 500 different times/ways in 800 threads. I wish that I had thought to make that first.

Pay you to root his phone!? How much is this individual paying? lol If you have to send someone your phone to root, you shouldn't be rooting in the first place...

Easy money with FROYO. Lost1 has a stickied post in the Q/A that will root and give you the unlock code also.
Maybe you can get some more cash for the unlock also bubba.
If he/she gives you a GB UCKK3 or later ...watchout. It can be a headache.

His is stock. I doubt it even got the ota update back around Nov. I kind of feel sorry for him . He said qb777 would do it for him, but he was looking for someone closer. No idea why distance matters. What should I charge?

Heh. I remember back in the day a buddy of mine used to take and jailbreak people's touches for ten bucks. Then, to make it so that they could actually use it with appulous or whatever it was called, he would charge an extra 5.. I think. So 15 bucks to jailbreak an iPod 2nd gen.. then eventually they got smart and realized that it was the easiest thing in the world..
And I'm sure that distance matters because he would get it back quicker.. No! You're not rooting my phone.. lol.... wow. Sad.

Noob to SGS4G for T Mobile...

Okay people I just bought this phone and I'm coming from MyTouch 4G. I've been reading for the past 2 days about how to flash a SGS4G and honestly,..it's crazy! Little overwhelming to be Honest...to the point, I rooted my phone with Superoneclick, I have superuser, so I know it's rooted. Plus, I have Titanium Backup running on my phone. Everything is still FACTORY SET on the phone. It is running 2.2.1 Froyo. I did read about Froyo udate zip CWM and recovery and have downloaded them. My question is since I want to flash A Rom does it have to be Froyo only? If there is such a thing?? Or can it be Gingerbread 2.3.6? And is there anything else I need to download? I know I have to follow to the tee on the OP that the Dev. says to do. I just want to be sure exactly what I need to do..

The GB starter pack would be the way to go if you want to update to GB and a custom rom if you need any help just send a PM

The gb ext4 starter pack saved me alot of headache when I first got this phone. Hands down it is the best way to go. Just make sure you follow the directions exactly. Its guides like this and the people that make them that make XDA so great.

I'm new to it as well and like you are saying, it's overwhelming to root and flash on this phone. But I followed the GB starter pack the other day and included the Vahalla Final rom as my choice and everything worked great. Some things actually happened a hair different than described and I thought it screwed up but it worked.
But I think I just screwed up trying to do a restore

I'm on the same boat as the OP, I have a mytouch 4g and my cousin is about to upgrade soon, so she offered to sell me her galaxy s 4g for $75 so I'm gonna take up on it.
I've been spying on the forums here and have noticed that most of your guys' roms are gingerbread roms, (i didn't really bother to search, for I don't know for sure I'll keep this phone or sell both my mt4g and this new phone for a galaxy s ii), but anyways, I saw something about porting roms from the other galaxy phones, am I right?
I haven't seen any ics roms here yet, but I took a look at the vibrant forums and it appears they have an ics rom and i was wondering would porting the ics rom from the vibrant be possible if I wanted to try. Thanks

It is a touchy subject in this forum. I would leave it alone. The kernel isn't there yet but the devs are working hard to make it happen for the community!

Most will tell you if you want a rom ported do it yourself. The devs are working on what they are working on. It isn't really our place as end-users to make request (my opinion of course) rather be grateful for all the awesome **** they have done and are working on. So no... it isn't easy.
And yes --> We have some fantastic ROMS.

Yea, I kinda got a feeling it was a do it yourself community here cause I went into the dev section and was like dang you guys don't really have a lot of choices, but then I went to the vibrant's dev section and they have a lot just like the phone I have now.
What phone is easiest to port from for the galaxy s 4g, I'm thinking the vibrant but idk

Any hope in running any os other than android on tab 7 plus?

this sounds good too

i am going to attempt a rom soon but first i will help u port if you can find one with very similar compatibility such as a sg2 rom as we share very similar hardware. you could also try patching one together such as sg2 hardware with g tab 10.1 base if you become stuck i will help u out and im sure a lot of people on here have got your back.

i really dont think that the gecko project is quite ready for our device as it is very new to the gt2 but im sure its best to start with an android based os even if we just stick to honeycomb but a stock version possible a xoom sg2 port or a stock themed rom for the sg2 then all we have to do is tweak and port but its dest if you read all about development and porting etc before attempting anything rash haha.
their are meany guides online to help you if you want to give it a go in your spare time and u have the advantage of me and my lack of care for this over secured tablet haha so basically i will attempt anything with it and if i hard brick it iv still got a $764 roofing tile haha its not every day u see a house with samsung roofing

yup.. not yet matured.. i'm now building the qemu version of it, want to see how it goes..
actually, i don't mind going back to CM7
i really want to learn how to do a custom rom, but the tab+ is still under a 2 years contract. don't want to take toooo much risk for now.

you are pretty free from totaly destroying your tab+ as it as very hard to hard brick it and soft bricking is sooooo easy to fix its silly haha all you need it stock firmware and odin 1.8 and your back to stock all u need to worry about is loosing data.

Possible to add cwm after SGT2 7.0 already rooted?

Probably one of the noobist questions to start off with but I need the answer or pointed in the right direction if at all possible, many many thanks in advance.
As you can see by the tittle i already have my galaxy tab 2 7.0 rooted (3113) and totally blanked on rooting with cwm. So how can I do it without having to restart the root process all over again?
Again much thanks is given for all help.

I used mobile Odin to flash the cwm zip back. That worked for me.

Mobile Odin will work... However you'll want to run it in odin and flash CWM.
No you don't have to start the root process over again. I am assuming your stock rooted?

You can go for CM10.1..But I personally like stock..So rooted with unbloated Stock.

I kept reading that stock is best still for maintaining gaming levels (gaming usually pushes a system to its limits more so that anything else). I only just got my sgt2 so im in no rush. Yet

Just downloaded ICS from sam mobile yesterday and I'm reinstalling it tomorrow. Yea I am sick of swapping out roms constantly. I have the JB rom downloaded also in case I decide to reinstall it in the future

From what I've read IR Blaster is only working on select ROMs. Dunno if that's important to you.

how can I tell which leak I'm on? And if 2.. What are options..scv7 supercharged..:(

I have acquired a Motorola Atrix 2 from a best friend of mine. I have been following XDA for years thank you for all the help with my optimus v. I do not know how to tell which leak I have I apologize but I have looked at the threads until my eyes have I apologize but I have looked at the threads until my eyes have bled and then looked again and I still see so much conflicting information I do not know what to do or think anymore. I want to know if I am running scvc 7 ICS supercharged.. If I can go to another rom. I hope I find out I have one of the phones that I can go back to Gingerbread. My friend is clueless he has no answers for me. again I a I'm not exactly a noob but . I owe is much is i know so far to you all so thank you in advance

Post a screenshot of your about phone screen. If the kernel build has a mid july build date, then it is leak 1 and you can go back to GB using my script in the dev section.
Otherwise you can only run ICS based ROMs (yes you can run any ROM that is ICS based, just not GB based ones).
If you have issues it is easy to use the ICS FXZ, as we did not have that yet when leak one and two were out. Hence the issues and bricks. You MUST know which version of the phone though (ATT, Asian, or HK) To properly use an FXZ, or you have a chance to brick.

Had to break out my optimus v, and I would like to personally thank you for responding so quick. I expected to get really beat up I have been following you all for years and I know how it is horrible to be redundant here. Well my new friend it looks like I am on week 2. I do not know what to do where I should go from here but I will tell you what more stable even stock would be better even if it is a ICS leak. I don't know why they call it a leak if it came over the air does that mean AT&T in Motorola send out experimental software? the fact that I'm posting speaks to the power that this phone is an anomaly. Through the years I have never once had to post. All of my hard questions have been answered by you all in advance.

Otherwise you can only run ICS based ROMs (yes you can run any ROM that is ICS based, just not GB based ones).
If you have issues it is easy to use the ICS FXZ, as we did not have that yet when leak one and two were out. Hence the issues and bricks. You MUST know which version of the phone though (ATT, Asian, or HK) To properly use an FXZ, or you have a chance to brick.

thank you, does this tell you that I'm on the second leak? I don't know where to look to find out how to install a permanent recovery.. I suppose I'll have to use boostrap.. scary concept....
and FXZ..New one to me. I'll search the threads more for that.. unless you want to throw new some more hints. my girlfriend and I, are so grateful

Think that's official. It's same as I have, and i fxz'd to official 4.0.4.
Going back to gingerbread is worthless. It'd be like going from Windows 7 back to xp.
We don't use bootstrap anymore, and If you have I'd fxz to stock, root it, and then install boot menu manager, or BMM. then can flash the newer stuff.
But be aware the what your on and Numa are the only fully functional and stable ones we have.

Hey thanks man. We bought this from my best friend actually it was a gift. It is on leak two I believe according to Jim and also it came with SCV7. It is already rooted. I am just confused as to the next step to do how to FXZ ..it is AT&T phone. I am scared to death I will brick this ! And the scary thing is I have rooted been custom ROMs and recoveries on many different phones for friends and coworkers but I have never encountered anything like this Motorola Edison

wow that is incredible. And there is a lot of love in this place. I appreciate that. My next move is to borrow my friends laptop as mine has died and get started hopefully this weekend. I will report the results. Did I say you guys were awesome? Voice love this place and I cannot wait to start my classes, I'm going to study Linux and computer technology at the local community college here. And from there who knows. Anyways thank you to you all and many like you for the inspiration I cannot wait to get my girls phone working 100 percent again.. Now to focus on the other problem I will try to read the thread and then I'll post later the screen seems possessed like it touches on its own I don't know if its a digitizer or a program problem because it seems to come and go at different times of the month. Very bizarre. Anyways thank you any tips are appreciated and I will keep you informed on this little project, and I'm going to start Searching the threads hoping I have the answer to someone else's question :thumbup:
